On 27th March 2026, Friday, the Year 1 Guides had our first Pioneering session of the year, where we worked together to build a Two-Storey Box Tower. It was our first time taking part in such a large-scale Pioneering activity, so many of us were excited and curious to see how such a tall structure could be built using only spars and ropes. Although we had learnt some basic knots and lashes before, this was our first opportunity to apply them in an actual Pioneering structure. The construction of the Box Tower took a very long time, and we realised that building a stable structure required a great deal of planning, patience and teamwork. Throughout the activity, we contributed by tying Square Lashes, Timber Hitches, and 报时-ing consistently. We paid close attention to our seniors' instructions before tying the lashes, making sure they were secure enough to support the structure. Although there were periods where we did not have much to do while waiting for other parts of the tower to be completed, we used the time to observe how the seniors assembled the different sections and learnt why each lashing and knot was important in keeping the tower strong and stable. As the structure gradually became taller, it was very satisfying to see how everyone's individual contributions came together to form the completed Box Tower. This activity showed us that Pioneering is much more than simply tying lashes. It requires communication, careful coordination and trust between every member of the team. Even small tasks, such as tying a single lash properly, played an important role in ensuring the tower was safe and secure. Overall, this first Pioneering experience was both eye-opening and rewarding. It gave us a better understanding of how our lash-tying skills are applied in real situations and inspired us to continue improving our skills. We look forward to participating in more Pioneering activities in the future and becoming more confident and skilled Guides.
On 27 March, it was Rangers’ Training, and we built a Two-Storey Box Tower. We first laid out the frames. We then marked the measurements with chalk so that we would not lose the measurements. The Rangers had split us into 2 groups to build the two main frames before 起-ing and 顶-ing the two frames. The Year 3s continued to 顶 the two frames while the rest of us connected the two frames with 青木 horizontals. It was one of the first times the Year 1s did Pioneering so they needed a lot of help, and thus we guided them as Year 2s. Furthermore, it was challenging as we were rushing and had to tie the lashes in the standard timings to reduce overrunning. Next, we tied the 深蓝木 and 黄木 diagonals to the 青木 horizontals. Some of the lashes were too high for us to reach, so we needed to use ladders and canteen tables to reach them. However, we forgot to 顶 the ladders and canteen tables, leading to the Rangers having to remind us. After which, we tied horizontal 红木 diagonals to the main frame and 黄木 verticals. Finally, we tied the floorboards to the structures. Although It was a bit hard to tie the floorboards due to the holes in the floorboards being really small and hard for the 白绳 to pass through, we still managed to complete the structure after much perseverance! However, I think that there are many areas which we can improve in. We could have followed the timings that the Year 3s gave us to tie our lashes better as we often 过时-ed. One of the ways we can do this is by 报时-ing more so that we know how long we have left. Lastly, we can pay more attention to safety as we did not 顶 the ladders and canteen tables before using them, which is very dangerous. In future 集合s, we should always check that all ladders and canteen tables are properly 顶-ed before climbing onto them to prevent accidents and ensure everyone's safety. Overall, it was super enriching and fun to be teaching the Year 1s Pioneering for the first time, under the leadership of the Year 3s.
On 27th March, we had Rangers’ Training whereby we, the Year 3s, had to lead both the Year 1 and Year 2 batches in the building of a Two-Storey Box Tower. While the Year 1s and 2s were tasked to collect the logistics needed for building, the Year 3s were planning the In-Charges (ICs) deployment to lead the building. However, within the original time the Rangers had given us, we did not provide them with a satisfactory plan that our whole batch agreed and were clear on. Hence, the Rangers had to give us more time to reach a consensus. After explaining our plan to the Rangers, we proceeded to the area outside the Media Resource Library (MRL) to start building the Box Tower. However, the Year 1s and 2s had 过时-ed due to their lack of sense of urgency. This caused them to overrun and hence, we started late. Our self-assigned ICs led the building of the frames. We were split into 2 groups, with each IC taking one group. However, due to the lack of communication between both groups, we had different measurements, leading us having to retie many lashes between both frames. Afterwards, we started tying the horizontals and diagonals that were needed to connect both frames together. Due to our lack of 报时 and sense of urgency, our overall progress was slowed down and there were many Guides 做不-ing. In the end, we had to rush through completing the structure, which was caused by our previous complacency. Although we overran by quite a while, we were happy that we were able to complete the structure, before 拆掉-ing and returning the Pioneering Spars and logistics as fast as could. From my experience, I learnt the importance of effective communication, not only between the ICs, but also as manpower, to take the initiative to help out wherever we could, and with a strong sense of urgency. This was also the first time leading a 集合 as a batch, hence I was very happy that the Year 3s worked well together to complete the structure, under the guidance of the Rangers.
