31 October 2006

Hello all!

Today was 30th October 2006, Monday.

We had our Knotter's Badge Training, where Sec1s, 2s & 3s learnt much more new knots & whippings. Bowline, Man Harness Knot, Fisherman's Knot, Packer's Knot, Common Whipping... Hope everyone will remember what was taught today, & it will be tested in ATC as well! :D

ATC just around the corner, feeling tensed up?

Relax, be prepared & get yourself ready for a whole lot of experience!

Just a thought!

People jogged to lose weight & slim down.
BUT what if you jogged backward . . .
would you gain weight? :D

In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand.

Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve one's condition.

You might have read this story before, but was it applied into our lives? Obstacles, challenges, troubles. Treat them as opportunities to make yourself a better person. Make use of these opportunities to improve yourselves. ATC is one opportunity. You may see it as an obstacle or a burden. Why not treat it as a challenge and use it to polish up your skills? First determine your attitude, then let it determine you altitude.

15 more days to ATC!

CHEERS! :D

"What a folly to dread the thought of throwing away life at once, and yet have no regard of throwing it away by parcels and piecemeal."

Treasure the time given to you for camp preparation! Dont waste them away, MAKE USE OF TIME TO THE FULLEST! :D

Put all your excuses aside and remember this: YOU are capable. Believe you can do it, for everyone has the potential to achieve great heights. But always rmb, although ABILITY can take you to the top, it takes CHARACTER to keep you there.

CHEERS! :D

"Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can."

Put in your very best in everything; all the best for your camp preparation and ATC! :D
Hi all, happy Hari Raya!

Yesterday was 23rd October 2006, Monday.

We had jihe for ATC briefing, where trainees knew their groupings and were given details for the camp. We will be having our ATC at Camp Christine like last year, and the dates are from 13th November to 16th November. We will jihe at 7am on the 13th and break camp/reach school at roughly 2.30pm on the 16th.

This is the calendar for this week. Miss Tang will be issueing the updated calendars and schedule for October, November and December on 25th October (Wednesday) during ji he.

Things to note/dates to mark:
- Ji He at SBJ at 3.30pm on 25th (Wednesday) in school uniform & bring along your camp preparation materials

- Ji He at your respective allocated classrooms in school uniform and bring along your camp preparation materials on 26th (Thursday), no Ji He at SBJ that day because sec3s will be having their lessons. Start your camp prep after school ends at your respective allocated classrooms

- All trainees + counsellors are to submit $10 for camp fees to Miss Tang during camp preparation on 25th (Wednesday), if Miss Tang does not collect directly during Ji He, pass it to your respective counsellors for your ATC patrol.

- All trainees to submit $4.50 for patrol fees to your respective ATC patrols' counsellors, who will then submit to Li Hui. Trainees are to note that they are supposed to use their own money to pay for their shorts, identities etc. and safekeep the receipts. Submit the receipts to Li Hui before the camp and Li Hui will return trainees their money. Trainees are to note to work within the budget.

- There will be guides initiative on Friday. Sec3s initiatives' I/Cs will inform everyone on who will be going for which activity, either that or Vanessa will take over.

- Note that ALL camp preparation work has to be stopped and trainees are to leave school by 5.30pm sharp.

Here is a story to share,

THE SECRET OF SUCCESS

There was once a boy who wanted to seek the secret ofsuccess. One day he approached a wise man living up in the mountain. When he found the wise man at the hut, he asked, “Wise man, can you tell me the secret to becoming successful in life?”

The wise man was silent for awhile. After a moment of silence, the wise man led the young lad to a nearby river. They kept walking into the river until the boy’s head was fully submerged in the water. The boy struggled to keep his head above the water. To his astonishment, the wise man did not help him. Instead, the wise man held the boy’s head in thewater. After a few minutes the wise man pulled the boy out of the water and they proceeded to walk back to the hut.

At the hut the wise man asked the young boy what he desired most when his head was submerged in water. To this the young boy quickly responded, “Of course, I wanted to breathe, you old fool!” To which the wise man replied, “Son, if you desire success as much as you wanted to breathe, then you would have found the true secret of success.”

SUCCESS PRINCIPLES

Success is a matter of choice. If we have enough strong reasons, there is nothing that we cannot do. Once we have the reasons to do something, we will surely find the ways to do it. A mere wish would not make things happen. It is a burning desire, turned into an obsession that will generate the energy to bring you to achieve any goal that you may desire.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE

"Not the maker of plans and promises, but rather the one who offers faithful service in small matters. This is the person who is most likely to achieve what is good and lasting."

So guys, wish you success for the upcoming ATC. There's nothing you can't do, for everything is in the power of THE mind! Or rather.. YOUR minds!

One for all and all for one; the strength of the company is of the strength of the weakest.

Hope these can be exhibited!

Good luck everyone!

"Mom and Dad, I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a friend I'd like to bring home with me."

"Sure," they replied, "we'd love to meet him."

"There's something you should know the son continued, "he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mind and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us." "I'm sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live."

"No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us."

"Son," said the father, "you don't know what you're asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can't let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He'll find a way to live on his own."

At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide.

The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son. They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn't know, their son had only one arm and one leg.

The parents in this story are like many of us. We find it easy to love those who are good-looking or fun to have around, but we don't like people who inconvenience us or make us feel uncomfortable. We would rather stay away from people who aren't as healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are. Thankfully, there's someone who won't treat us that way. Someone who loves us with an unconditional love that welcomes us into the forever family, regardless of how messed up we are.

So, we musn't judge a book by its cover and don't label others, one of the aspects of being a great leader.

counting down for atc, anyone?

"Come to the edge."

"We can't. We're afraid."

"Come to the edge."

"We can't. We will fall!"

"Come to the edge."

And they came.

And he pushed them.

And they flew.

All you need is some courage, and you'll find yourself doing things you never knew you could.

A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit.
When the other frogs saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead.

The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead.

Finally, one of the frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died.

The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out.

When he got out, the other frogs said, "Did you not hear us?" The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time.

This story teaches two lessons:

1. There is power of life and death in the tongue. An encouraging word to someone who is down can lift them up and help them make it through the day.

2. A destructive word to someone who is down can be what it takes to kill them.Be careful of what you say. Speak life to those who cross your path. The power of words... it is sometimes hard to understand that an encouraging word can go such a long way. Anyone can speak words that tend to rob another of the spirit to continue in difficult times. Special is the individual who will take the time to encourage another.

so continue to keep the guides spirit and also rmb to always encourage one another for the upcoming atc! (:

It is essential to differentiate the difference between a LEADER and a MANAGER!

Leader:
- coping with / planning change (especially if it is very sudden)
- determine whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall

Manager:
- coping with complexity
- brings order and consistency out of potential chaos
- applies known solition and strategies
- efficiency in climbing ladder of success

RESPECT is to be earn, not demanded
Leaders LEAD and SERVE is for the benefit of the patrol, not themselves.

Power-Abusers:
- over-value themselves and under-value others
- often don't take time to deal with the root cause of problems
- often are blind to counsel because of their "positional ego"

REMEMBER!
"with greater power comes greater responsibility"
"it's NOT about YOU!"

-

Why do we need a proposal?
1) cover all safety aspects of the activity
2) plan for emergencies that might occur (e.g. wet weather)
3) stay focused during the activity and not deviate from the learning objectives
4) show how well activity planned and how much effort is put in (help getting activity approved)

-

What is guiding?
Guiding is an adventure, fun and character-building and SISTERHOOD. It is a game of adventure, observation, general knowledge and ideas.

Patrol system:
Your company operates the patrol system through the patrol-in-council and court of honour (COH). COH is a session whereby leaders of different aspects come together to evaluate about a particular activity/event.

What is a patrol?
It consists of a small intimate group of girls who take initiative in planning activities and carrying them out.

What is a guides company?
- consists of a group of girls (6-8 patrols)
- runs along democratic line (every girl is an important member)
- members respect each other and listen attentively even when opinions differ
