Hi guides :D
Last Friday, we jihe in Guides uniform for roll call and just a reminder to all that everyone is supposed to be in the standard guides attire for every guides jihes. For this jihe, half of the company had initiatives while the other half had foot drill and physical training. P1,2,7,8 had initiatives while P3,4,5,6 had skills training.

For foot drill training, it is new to the year1s and to prepare the year1s for their enrolment while it is a time for the sec2s and 3s to brush up on their foot drill and to know the commands well. After that, we had physical training. The sec1s did a great job for this first PT that they had so keep up the good work :D For the sec2s, it is good that you guys had constant cheering to boost your morale and pia throughout the PT but know when to fall out, do not over exert yourselves. For the sec3s, there is room for improvement and remember what your senior had taught you.

For initiatives, P1 and 7 had to use recycled materials to come up with something and they managed to build a robot out of cardboard, magazines, plastic bottles. The robot is currently being displayed in our tuan bu now. P2 and 8 had sushi making lessons which were taught by Stephanie's father. They had lots of fun learning and enjoying their ending product.

Hello guides,

We celebrated World Thinking Day yesterday, in school and today, in the indoor National Stadium with all the other girl guides and brownies around Singapore.

World Thinking Day which falls on the 22nd of February, is a day where girl guides/scouts all over the world, in 145 countries will think of one another and give thanks and appreciations for their sister guides and to renew the guide promise we made when we were first enrolled. This year’s theme is girls worldwide say "stop the spread of AIDS, malaria and other diseases". It links directly to our new Global Action Theme: girls worldwide say "together we can change our world." With regards to our new Global action theme, our seniors have also planned to do a cip project to help the needy people thus do participate actively and 'pay forward', something which all of us learnt from the movie today. Together as a whole company with 120 guides, we can make a difference.

Not to forget what Miss Ngau had mentioned to us, “A Good Turn a Day” – This is one of the golden rules of Guides all over the world. Doing something to help is a good turn. It need not be something particularly big or showy and we should aim for at least one good per day :D

Remember to visit the new launched Guides Website for more information about guiding.

Hello guides!
On Friday we had our Combined UG Campfire 2009 to welcome our new sec1s!
We jihe-ed at 2.20pm, while the songleaders went off at 3pm to rehearse for the last time before the actual campfire. After that, we joined our patrol and taught the sec1s campfire songs and the mass dance!

At around 5+pm, we went to have dinner at the canteen, and we had fun bonding with our patrol. The songleaders left earlier to go to the hall. We were all very nervous before the start of the campfire, wondering how it would turn out to be, whether our 3-times-a-week practises would pay off.

We started off by welcoming the vips with the scouts doing their lion dance, and Mr Sng giving an opening speech. The highness started when Mr Sng announced the magic words, "I declare the campfire OPEN!" We started singing Campfire's Burning, and then slowly moving up the highness graph. At the end of section 1, it was the audience's first game! The emcees called out for people who fit the descriptions of what they said, and the enthusiatic participants dug into a box for items that were from the 4 UGs.

After section 2, we had our very own Don't Forget The Lyrics kind of game!
A few representatives from each UG sang funny cover versions of each song where participants were made either to guess the song title or sing the next line.
Everyone shouted "encore!" because it was just so entertaining to see the funny representatives singing their own renditions.

The climax of the campfire was at section 3, where the audience had alot of fun singing and doing actions to the fast action songs. And our very own combined UG MASS DANCE! For the second time of the dance, each CCA chairperson was called out on stage to dance, and some other enthusiastic people also went in front! Even though the fire was not real and the venue was indoors and air conditioned, the atmosphere was still super super high!

The end of mass dance marked the start of section 4, the songs that made the atmosphere descend down the highness graph and put everyone into a swaying lullabye mode. We ended with the song Auld Lang Syne.

And then Mr Sng went up on stage and uttered the words we dreaded, "I declare the campfire closed." And we all went woosh.

At the end of campfire, even though we were tired and sad that it was over so quickly, and having the emo after-effect flowing in, it was really a night to remember and we had loads and loads of fun as a big big family!
Looking back at the few weeks of songleaders' trainings, I felt that we really had an enriching time having fun with people from all 4 Uniformed Groups, working with the people whom we previously only knew by name or face. There were little little conflicts along the way, but that strengthened our bond(: It was heartwarming to see everyone trying hard together and willing to stay back.

And on behalf of the songleaders, I would like to thank all the mentors and Sec4s ex-songleaders who took time out from their busy school schedule to supervise us and gave us advice on how to improve, and for being so patient with us. And also thankyou to everyone for their effort in making this campfire a huge success! :D

HI guides :D

Yesterday, it was the second jihe for the year1s and our Combined UG Campfire. The year2s taught the year1s some of the basic knots and lashes while the year3s had to complete their creative product that they came up with before this jihe within a certain time. Some of the products that the year3s made were creative however there were still areas of improvement such as stability of it and the practicality of it. The objectives of creating a new and different gadget was to allow the year3s to think out of the box and use their creativity to build something different besides the usual gadgets we build and also to allow the year1s to see different gadgets that can be build just by using the knots that they learnt and gadget poles. After skills training, we had patrol corner whereby PLs taught the patrol on campfire songs, cheers and mass dance to prepare for the campfire. After dinner, we proceed to hall for our campfire.

This year's campfire theme is "home away from home". We were honoured to have our school principal joining us in this campfire as well as the teachers and seniors. Everyone had lots of fun singing together around the campfire, dancing and cheering together, spending the night together as one whole big family. We hope that the year1s enjoyed the campfire as much as we did and "Welcome of our UG family and enjoy the following years in UG"

Here are some pictures taken yesterday :)

13th Febuary 2009.

The 2009 CUG campfire!

On this particular day, Friday the 13th, we had our jihe at 2.20pm.
the year2s were asked to teach the year1s square and diagonal lashes again,
while the year3s continued to work on their creative gadgets.

after that, the patrols were broken off to have 30min of patrol corner and 1hour of campfire songs learning: )

the patrol corner was spent discussing about the li jie in guides.
things like guides 不是跑,就是飞;
don't talk during jihe,
dont ge xiaodui,
and ABCDE in guides etc
which are all very important to guides(:

after half an hour of these serious topic,
it was time to learn some songs and dances!

some patrols combined, and i'm sure everybody had a great time dancing or singing in anticipation of the campfire that night.

some guides had to leave their patrols in the midst of the above mentioned activities because of cugc preparation though):

We had dinner in school, with all the other 4 UGs.
we were supplied with food that were intended to boost our morale(read survival skills notes and you'll realise that its true.food boosts morale)
and healthy, refreshing drinks aka plain water: D

After dinner we jihed outside the canteen and sang
It was great to be able sing during jihe again as we have not been allowed to sing during past jihes for fear of disturbing the seniors in dhs, who still had lessons going on.

the campfire started at 730pm.
the theme was Home- Home away from Home, 家入我们!
we moved orderly, 2 by 2 patrols, into the hall, where the year1s were seated separately from us because we wanted them to have a better view of the campfire that was prepared to welcome them warmly into UG : )

the campfire started with the scouts and their lion dance, welcoming the vips
then Mr Sng, former UG member, current principal of dhs, vip of the campfire gave a welcoming speech and declared the campfire open!

as the songleaders started their first song, campfire's burning, it had already started to get high amongst the seniors. For year1s, as that was their first campfire, they first appeared none too responsive, thus, we cha1 (mixed) into the year1s and attempted to radiate or rub off abit of enthusiasm on them: )

At the end of the first set of songs, we had some fun games planned by the campfire comittee.
UG members were called upon the stage if they fitted the mention criteria such as "a year1 with navy blue specs, and braces!" and then they would be given a chance to dig through a box for an item requested by the emcees and win prizes if they got it before the other contestants!
things like masheng(guides/scouts),baton(npcc),cpr mask(st johns) were placed in the box and it must have been exciting rumaging through the box frantically, trying to beat the other UGs to locating the items!haha.

after the game, songleaders were back into action! We sang some more traditional campfire songs, and everybody had fun joining in the mass singing session: ) The songleaders had put in alot of effort in preparation for this, and so had their mentors and not forgetting our guides emcee, Nicholette who had done a very good job of livening the campfire up: D

Thankyou to all of them!

after the 2nd session of songs, we had another game where representatives from all 4 UGs went up the stage and sang distorted versions of some very well-known songs.
From guides, we had kimberley and sarah! They were really very funny and the crowd laughed with them whenever they performed! The aim of the game was to guess the song names/ singers/etc correctly, and get a prize : ) It was really entertaining, watching the year4s from all UGs make funny actions as they sang.

We sang some songs again afterwards, and then had the mass danceeee~
the mass dance was really the HIGHLIGHT of the campfire!
our company leader, daphne was sent upon the stage, along with other CCA heads/chairpersons namely junrong from npcc, sean from scouts, and wenzhong from st johns.
they paired themselves up on the stage, and during the dance, all eyes were on them!
it was a joy to see our company leader from a wonderful view below, on the dance floor: D

we did the mass dance several times,
and at the end of it, according to the graph of campfire mood,
it was time to descend from the climax of the campfire to the going-to-be-the-end-of-campfire-mood.

we sang slow songs, but still had some leftover highness from the whole campfire event itself,
and when Mr Sng declared the campfire closed with a uniformed "whoosh" from the rest of us,

it was Time to Go Home.

buses were arranged to bring us to specific mrt station nearest our homes,

and we said see you, but not goodbye: D

in all, the campfire was a success because the year1s had a better insight of a campfire's atmosphere (not much insight of what a campfire is because we didnt have a real fire and everything was held in the hall due to school campus restrictions), and had learnt another side of their seniors as we all gayed(became happy) that night(:

thankyou all for making the event a success.

Year 1s' Welcome Party!

Hello guides,

Today was the welcome party for the Year 1s. We played Amazing Race – Guides Edition, which consists of 4 stations.

1. Station 1: [夜里行军]
Guides will be blindfolded and led by their PL across the obstacles. This station requires good commmunication skills between the patrol members as the PL can only take care of a few people, so those at the back will not know anything. Also, this game builds trust among the members as they have to rely on one another to cross successfully. Those who acted by themselves would have found it difficult to cross the obstacles, and sometimes injuries will occur if they fall. There should be constant 报数 to ensure that nobody is taken away.

2. Station 2: [Human Knot/ Name Game]
These 2 games are pretty simple, as they are aimed to boost patrol spirit and also help one another to remember everyone's names. The Human Knot requires a little bit of strategic thinking, and can be a little time consuming. However one should not just train their body but also their mind, so that they can be quick on their feet. The Name Game is a fun and interesting way for one to learn a new name. The alliteration of the first letter of your makes it easy for others to remember your name.

3. Station 3: Tug of War
This station is a test of patrol strength and cooperation, and emphasizes on the importance of teamwork. No man is an island, one cannot survive on her own without friends. Friends can help you and give you support, and friends are also important for personal growth. Through this game, the guides have learned how to work together as one to achieve a common goal. A patrol with a vision has the highest chances of becoming he best, so we should always aim for something to help us move forward.

4. Station 4: Knots & Lashes/ Scissors Paper Stone
The short 10min lesson on square lash is an introduction to the Year 1s on what guides do. We learn the different knots so as to construct gadgets that will help us when we are camping, such as shoe rack and baggage rack. Apart from tightness of the knot, speed is also very important. So as new guides, Year 1s should spend some time to practice on the knots so that you can catch up to your seniors. The last game is not much of challenge, except the part where the Year 1s have to tie a square lash as forfeit. If you are able to tie one, it means you have listened to your senior when she taught you and have tried your best to remember the steps. This is a giant leap towards your guiding life. Keep it up!

Overall, every patrol did very well, especially the Year 1s, who showed enthusiasm and active participation in all the activities. We can plan many things, but only with your participation and positive can you enjoy the activities and make them work. So everyone please continue to giev it your best in everything you do so as to get the best out of it.
