Skills Training, 29 January 2021

Hi Guides!

We had Treasure Hunt Gadgeting and Creative Pioneering for this week’s 集合.

Creative Pioneering

We have decided to build a creative structure --- bridge with a heart. This allows the 3 patrols per group to have better communication with each other and have a plan in mind regarding the building of the structure together.

Reflection from a Year 3

This creative pioneering was quite disappointing to me. At first when we started tying the tripods, we realised that we had picked the wrong 木 and had to waste time finding better ones when it could have been done when we were collecting the 木. One tripod had been done earlier than the other. However, the 定脚s for that tripod had to be re-tied over and over again and took more than 30 minutes to tie a standard tripod. The second tripod was tied loosely and we had to re-tie it twice. We should have tied the tripod tightly in the first place to ensure not wasting time to tie the tripod again. We were so focused on trying to tie the lashes that we did not spare a glance for our logistics. Our 麻绳 barrel was taken quite a few times and despite that, we still did not attempt to move it closer or look after them better. We had to be constantly reminded to 报时 as well. In conclusion, this pioneering session taught us that looking after our logistics is extremely important and tying tight standard lashes is one of the key things to allow us to be able to complete the whole structure well.

Treasure Hunt Gadgeting

For this activity, you will be competing with other patrols to be the first to build a creative gadget. In order to retrieve the logistics and proposal drawing required to build the creative gadget, you will be required to hunt for 4 Post-it Notes found on GSL Level 1 and Level 2 as a patrol. These Post-it Notes will require you to carry out specific tasks, in order to be able to be used to exchange them for the logistics. Be careful and stick closely to your patrols as there are monsters lurking around the vicinity, to capture your patrol mates and steal your resources!

Reflection from a Year 3

During this activity, we started off by finding post-its around GSL before we could collect our logistics. The missions in the post its allowed us to recap on some guides knowledge such as The Guides Promise and logistics in a 配备. As a patrol, we thought of a creative way in order for us to make sure we stay together. As we could not link arms, we held onto each other’s water bottle instead. Thus, we could better ensure we will not get kapped. After completing the missions, we were tasked to build a creative flagpole. While tying our lashes, we took better note of 照顾好人,照顾好东西, and 报时 more often. As we had extra time, we made our flag more unique by netting our patrol number on the ‘flag’, and tightening our lashes. We enjoyed this Treasure Hunt Gadgeting activity a lot as it was very fruitful and we could take away some learning points with us.

We hope everyone had fun during this 集合 and are looking forward to the next 集合!

Patrol Activity, 25 January 2021

Hello Guides!

This was our very first Patrol Activity of 2021! Here are some reflections from the various members of each patrol.

Reflection from a Year 2 of Patrol 1:

Patrol Activity on Monday was a rather fruitful one as we were able to work fast and learn something from it. We managed to build a Baggage Rack under the standard timing given which was something we were proud of ourselves. However, on the next structure we built, it became a movable quadpod as there were many lashes which were not up to standard. It was originally meant to be a waterproof shoe rack but the netting was rather inconsistent and the poncho wasn’t taut. We also spent too much time on planning and didn’t manage to finish on time, which resulted in us 过时ing. I feel that we should also take care of our logistics and patrol mates better as they are very important to us. On the bright side, the station games were fun and productive as we managed to pick up and revise a few Guides songs like Cannibal King and The Window. Overall, I managed to learn a lot from this 集合 and had fun.

Reflection from a Year 3 of Patrol 1

For the Patrol Activity on Monday, I felt that it was not quite up to standard as the lashes we tied were not tight. For many structures, the base of the structure like the tripod and quadpod were not tied tightly, causing the structure to be very unstable and could topple any time. It also could not stand with items on it, defeating the purpose of building the structure. Moreover, some of our patrol mates were kapped many times, showing how we were not paying enough attention to our logistics and manpower. I feel that we can work on including everyone better, such that no one is isolated or left out alone at the corner where no one would notice. Another thing we can improve on is stepping up to lead the Year 2s and make sure they stick to the small timings we give them and not take their own time. However, as it is the first Patrol Activity of the year, I feel that our performance was not that bad and I hope we can do better for future Patrol Activities.

Reflection from a Year 2 of Patrol 2

At the start of Patrol Activity, we collected the logistics which were required to make two different structures that could serve as a net as well as hide our 白绳 box. This allowed us to not only revise on our lashes, but also expand our creativity while building structures. While building the structure, we also learnt that when selecting gadget poles, we should select thickness according to the structure we are building. After that, we played capture the flag, where the flag was our 白绳 box.  We had to think very carefully of a special place which not only prevents the other team from taking it but also convenient for us to slot the other team's 白绳 box once we had obtained it.  After that we also played captain’s ball where we were supposed to place the ball in our net to gain a point. These games allowed us to bond as a patrol and we had a lot of fun. To end it off, we played a game of mafia. Some of us had never played it before, and it was a relaxing and interesting way of ending off the Patrol Activity. This was the first Patrol Activity of 2021 and we felt that it was very fun and enriching. We enjoyed ourselves very much! We also look very much forward to the next Patrol Activity.

Reflection from a Year 3 of Patrol 2

We just had our first Patrol Activity of the year and we built our own net and structure to play capture the flag as well as captain's ball. I really enjoyed the activities as we got to improve on our hard and soft skills while having fun. We also got the chance to be creative and have more time to bond with our juniors while having a more inclusive discussion with them. As Year 3s, we learned to be more independent and lead the juniors on our own instead of always relying on others. As a patrol, I think this session allowed us to refresh our skills especially the tying of quadpod as we are more unfamiliar with that structure. We also played mafia and it was fun and allowed us to truly communicate with our patrol members as usual CCA sessions can be quite hectic and there isn't really quality time for us to understand the patrol members and foster a closer relationship with them. I feel that our patrol morale has also improved through the sessions especially in Patrol Activity as the Year 2s are more confident and would 报时 more promptly. I really enjoyed this session and hope there will be similar sessions in the future.

Reflection from a Year 2 of Patrol 3

During this Patrol Activity, we had Gadgeting and Escape Room. I feel that Patrol Activity improves my sense of urgency and my knowledge of lashes. I had the chance to practice my lashes and learn new skills. I think that Patrol Activity also promotes bonding among the members of the patrol. However, we can improve on our manpower allocation, sense of urgency and Guides knowledge. Furthermore, we can also 照顾好人, 照顾好东西. We should also read up on our Guides notes so as to better familiarise ourselves with the various survival skill questions asked to us during the Escape Room activity. As a Year 2 getting ready to lead our next batch of Year 1s, I feel that we should also take the initiative to step up and look at the bigger picture. I have certainly learnt a lot from this Patrol Activity and found that the Escape Room the seniors planned for us was really interesting.

Reflection from a Year 3 of Patrol 3

For the Patrol Activity, I feel that it was good training for me. Personally, I had to step up more than usual and guide the Year 2s. There were also many things I could have better managed especially during the Gadgeting Activity of building a modified Kitchen Table. I feel that I could have allocated my manpower much better since at many times the Year 2s had nothing to do and had a better sense of urgency to ensure that we completed the structure on time. I could also have ensured that the lashes were of good quality as some of them were quite loose. On the other hand, the Escape Room activity was really fun and a good bonding experience for me and my patrols mates. I also got to revise some of the Guides things that I learnt in the Guides notes as I had to guess items or activities related to Guides. Overall, it was a fun Patrol Activity and I got to take away some important learning points and how to improve.

Reflection from a Year 2 of Patrol 4

For Patrol Activity on Monday, we played captain’s ball with the hoops we built out of gadget poles and also built a Shoe Rack and an Indoor Fire Altar. Captain's ball was very fun as we got to use our own hoops built and we also got to practice teamwork. This led us to be able to bond with the entire patrol. However, I felt that we could have tied the tripod lower so the hoop would be bigger for the ball to go in more easily. The Indoor Fire Altar should also have 2 定脚s that we did not tie. Our Shoe Rack could have been more upright as it was quite slanted. Patrol Activity helped us to train our soft skills and revise on how to build the structures. Overall, I think our lashes could be tighter and we should 报时 more and 照顾好人照顾好东西. We should look at the big picture of the structure more often and take note of protrusion if not some lashes will have little space to tie.

Reflection from a Year 3 of Patrol 4

The Patrol Activity on Monday was fun and engaging as the storyline was very interesting. It was also a good opportunity for us to bond together as a patrol through the various activities. Through the activity of building the Shoe Rack and Fire Altar, we managed to recap on these structures and guide our Year 2s in building them. It was also a platform for the Year 2s to practice tying their lashes. We have also learnt and refined our soft skills such as effective communication, team work and work delegation as we decided to split into two teams to each build a structure. We are also reminded of 照顾好人 and 东西, which is essential in Guides. We have also built a hoop for our game of Captain’s ball. We have thoroughly enjoyed the game of Captain’s ball together as one patrol and have definitely bonded through this game. Patrol Corner was one of the highlights of the Patrol Activity as it was a good time for us to share our thoughts about the session and bond together as a patrol!

Reflection from a Year 2 of Patrol 5

During Patrol Activity, we did creative pioneering and built a bridge. We learnt that it is important to ensure that the tripod lash is tied tightly because if it is not tied tightly, it can cause the whole tripod to be shaky even after the tying of 定脚s. We also learnt that choosing 木 of around the same thickness is crucial so that the tripod can be opened properly. Furthermore, we learnt that we should make sure all lashes are tied and 抽-ed properly so that the overall structure will be well-made because one step of the process can affect another. For example, the 定脚 that we tie the 木 across both tripods must be tight so that it can withstand someone’s weight. We also feel that we should have 报时 more to ensure a sense of urgency. Overall, Patrol Activity was enjoyable and we were satisfied with the structure we made although it could still be improved in terms of how tight the lashes were.

Reflection from a Year 3 of Patrol 5

For Patrol Activity, we did creative pioneering. This was very exciting as it was the first Patrol Activity of the year. We had to build an interactive creative structure based on a drawing. It was a bridge made with two quadpods connected with 黄木. First we had to take the logistics needed. It was a bit hectic as we only had 4 people to carry all the 木. We also had some difficulty taking the 黄木. This caused us to overrun by a bit meaning that we had a tighter schedule and could not afford to overrun while building the bridge. Overall, I feel quite proud of my patrol as we managed to finish tying the structure and even had time to play on it. We also had very little manpower so this made completing the structure even more satisfying. I find this a fun and unique way to test and build up our hard skills as we have the opportunity to build structures outside of the standard structures we normally build. We also can interact with the structure making it more interesting.

Reflection from a Year 2 of Patrol 6

During Patrol Activity last Monday, we built a structure and a weapon to fend off the zombies according to the storyline and also played a game which required us to find post-it notes and watch out for our patrol mates. I think that we could have 报时 more often so that everyone in the patrol could hear and take note of the time, having a greater sense of urgency and also be more alert as sometimes, our patrol mates got kapped. We should also have communicated more when building the structure as most of us did not know how the structure would look like. During the game of Treasure Hunt, I believe that we could have looked out more for our patrol mates as some of us got kapped and their pieces of tape were taken away. As a result, we should not have left anyone behind and all walked together while finding the post-its.

Reflection from a Year 3 of Patrol 6

For Patrol Activity, we were tasked to build a structure with only one Year 3 looking at the design at a time. We were posed a difficulty as the one looking at the structure is not allowed to touch the logistics. By working our way around this problem, we learnt the importance of communication and giving our clear instructions as well. We also have to manage our time well as we spent most of our time building the structure while leaving only a few minutes to rush through the second task which is to build a weapon. In hindsight, we could have distributed our manpower more efficiently. The lashes tied should definitely be improved as the structure was leaning slightly towards one side, making it unstable. My favourite activity was the Treasure Hunt as it was extremely fun as we got to solve different riddles and go on mini courses to find all the post-it notes. We learnt to 照顾好 our patrol mates and look out for one another. Overall, it was a very fun Patrol Activity as we get to bond with one another.

We hope that everyone had fun during their first Patrol Activity of 2021 and bonded well with their patrol mates!

Skills Training, 22 January 2021

Hello Guides!

During today’s 集合, we had station games.

The overall storyline is as follows:

One day, when you and your patrol mates were cleaning the 团部, you chanced upon an old song book. You were curious as to know what were the songs that your seniors used to sing back in the days and flipped open the book. But little did you know, the song book is actually enchanted! Before you could even take a good look at the songs, you were engulfed into the book! You found yourselves trapped inside the book and the only way to escape is by entering 6 songs and completing the tasks given to you. There are 6 fairies who will guide you along the way.  After completing your task, you are required to sing the song that you are in and the fairies will give you a word. By the end of completing all 6 songs, you will have 10 words that form a spell for you to escape. Good luck and have a magical journey ahead!

Station 1: Father Abraham

Father Abraham has seven children. Some of them were tall, some of them were short, but none of them were bright. On Father’s Day, the children decided to surprise their  father by cooking a meal for him while he was at work. However, they broke their stove while they were cooking (somehow) as it was their first time cooking (and they were not bright) Ohno! It is up to you to help them to build an Outdoor Fire Altar to ensure they can cook the meal before their father comes home in 14 minutes.

Reflection from a Year 3

During 集合 on Friday, we were tasked to build a Outdoor Fire Altar for the first station. I feel that our morale was relatively high during this activity as we 报时ed often. Furthermore, we managed to finish our structure on time, with only one time extension needed. This may have been due to the fact that we put in the effort to 报时, so the whole patrol was aware of the time that we have left to build the structure, thus causing us to have a greater sense of urgency. However, there can still be some room for improvement. For instance, some of our lashes were a bit loose and one of our tripods could be a lot tighter. As one of our tripods were tied too loosely, the whole structure was a bit unstable as the tripod was supposed to be the main support of the whole structure. Hence, we should ensure that our main support, which was the tripod in this case, is tied tighter next time. Additionally, there were quite a number of 鸟绳s that we did not tuck in, so we can improve on ensuring that our structure looks neat and that there are no 鸟绳s in the future.

Good job on finishing your task before Father Abraham reached home! The children managed to cook a scrumptious meal for him thanks to you!

Station 2: My Bonnie

My Bonnie, My Bonnie. Well, we all know the story of what happens next. Bonnie sailed across the ocean to become a construction worker and left you alone with sleepless nights. One day, you decided to go find Bonnie and you chanced upon magical signs that seemed to lead the way to her.

You found Bonnie but sustained some serious injuries while she was working at the construction site. She hit her head on a wall and is bleeding. She fell and had a sprained ankle too. She also suffers from heat stroke due to being under the hot sun for several hours.

Reflection from a Year 3

In this station, we were tested on our first aid skills and ability to recognise the trekking signs. Even though we remembered most of the first aid skills tested, we missed out some details and were still unfamiliar with the head bandage. The seniors had to guide us and we now know how to tie the head bandage the right way.  As for the trekking signs, we were not sure of them. Hence, I feel that we could have read the Guides notes more frequently, and not wait until we are asked to as it will be inefficient to read it only when we are reminded to. We also tried to include our juniors and were able to bond as a patrol alongside using the time to refresh these important skills. Overall, I think we were quite slow and could have worked faster, with more frequent 报时 and a greater sense of urgency.

Bonnie is mostly fine now and the ambulance just arrived to take her to the hospital. Good job!

Station 3: Three Little Ducks

Welcome to Quak Quak Land, where ducks of all species live together. The land can be ruled by anyone who has the feather on his back. The feather only appears when the duck has deemed to earn his status as a king. This feather is very special as it will not drop off the duck’s body unless one has lost the qualities as a good ruler. One day, a duck by the name of Baden wants to become the king. Your job is to assist him in becoming stronger by doing a 8 minute PT routine with him.

Baden is stronger now, but he realises that there is more to being a king than physical strength. One needs to possess certain qualities to become a king as well. You are to solve the riddles on the post-its pasted around the class. The answers to the riddles may not necessarily be the qualities themselves.

Reflection from a Year 3

For station 3, the song that was referenced was three little ducks. For that station, we had to do physical training and solve riddles. The Physical Training we had to do was star jumps, burpees jumping jacks and crabwalk. We had to do one set of all these exercises. Overall I did not feel that this was too tiring and in fact felt more ready for the activities after the Physical Training. It was also the first time I heard of star jumps. For the riddles portion, we had to look for riddles written on post-its hidden all around the classroom. We would then have to solve the riddles and guess what the underlying value was. The value was then explained and we were told how these values were related to our guiding journey. I felt that this segment was very fun as I enjoy solving riddles in general. I also felt that it was a unique way to talk more about these values that are very important both in guides and in our daily lives.

Station 4: Titanic

It was sad when the great ship went down. The ghost of the husbands and the wifes and the children who lost their lives were furious about the sinking ship. They refused to 转世重生,一直在人间阴魂不散,伤害无辜的人。You have entered their territory and they have decided to kill you. You have 15 minutes to build something as a peace offering to them.

Reflection from a Year 3

Regarding station 4, I think the concept was very innovative and fun as the peace offering made me think about how to make my structure more creative. We built a tripod with the letter P to symbolise peace to show that we were unthreatening. From the station, I learnt that as PL, at that time, I should not be micromanaging and tying lashes when not needed. Therefore, next time, instead of only focusing on the little details, I will try to work on looking at the bigger picture and lead the patrol more efficiently in order to finish our structure faster and build it more effectively. I think that our structure could have been more creative and I will try to link our structure more to the topic next time we have similar activities. I think the station also helped me better understand the song titanic and overall, it was an enjoyable station.

The ghosts accepted your offering and decided to let you go. You quickly move on to your next song.

Station 5: Cannibal King

In the Mushroom Forest, there lived a tribe of cannibals named the R.Hounds. They feed on homosapiens by hunting for them outside the forest weekly. There was a rumour going around about eating the Hula Dame can make one 长生不老。The Cannibal King ordered his huntsmans to bring the girl to him as he wanted to eat her. Unexpectedly, he fell in love with the Hula Dame after getting to know her. He pretended to eat her but hid her under the bridge near the lake. He went to find her on every bright moonlit night. But one day, some people saw them under the bamboo tree. He had no choice but to kill them as he didn’t want others to be eyeing her as food. You are to assist him in building a new shelter that can camouflage into any surrounding using the legendary ponchos to hide the Hula Dame.

Reflection from a Year 3

During this station we had to build a shelter. We built tripods to be used as the frame of the whole shelter. The Year 2s built tripods quite often and were familiar with how to tie the tripod so it was done quite quickly. While we were tying the lashes, we 报时 quite frequently but still needed some reminder from the seniors. However, our whole attention was on the lashes we were tying and did not focus on our logistics. We took a while to realise that the logistics were gone and had to ask for them back quite late. We managed our time quite wisely but towards the end we started to work a lot slower which caused us to not be able to finish up the last bit of our structure. Overall, our lashes were all quite tight except for the tripod lash which needed to be improved on. One of the dingjiaos of the tripod was tied wrongly as well. At the end of the station, we had to sing the song “cannibal king”. It was a song that everyone knew so it was pretty easy to complete that task. All in all, the whole experience helped us to revise how to tie a standard tripod and lashes.

Station 6:

Reflection from a Year 3

It was a very enjoyable and meaningful experience at Station 6. Firstly, we started off at the station with orienteering with a compass. That was a good opportunity for us to guide and teach our Year 2s how to use a compass to navigate their way. It was also great that we managed to allow all the Year 2s to have a go at using the compass. This was also a good platform for us to refresh our memories on how to use a compass to find directions. Secondly, we tried to light up a signal fire. This was the first time we showed the Year 2s how to do so and it was very meaningful. As the Year 2s have not gone through outdoor cooking before, it was our first time teaching them how to use the matchsticks to light up the 木麻黄 and we definitely had a lot of fun doing so! Lastly, we also sang the song 南屏晚钟. During 集合, we hardly sing any chinese songs and that was a good time for for us to sing the song and recap on it. It was also a good chance for the Year 2s to learn that song.

你成功地建好了你的棚子,其他的仙女也在不久后发现了你的求救信号,帮你离开了森林,拯救了你。

We hope everyone had fun playing the station games and enjoyed the storylines!

Skills Training, 15 January 2021

Hi Guides!

During today’s 集合, we had Creative Gadgeting, Inspection, Patrol Corner and a Mini Performance!

Creative Gadgeting

We started off by having a competition of logistics. In order to require your logistics, you would have to win 3 consecutive games of scissors paper stone with your Year 4 seniors before proceeding to grab your logistics. Each person can only take 3 gadget poles at a time and the game will end when all the logistics have been taken.

Following that, it was time for us to start on our Creative Gadgeting. You would have to build a structure that is to be put up for auction. A few of the richest Girl Guides in Asia also known as your Year 4s will be going to that auction. As for the first part of the auction, your job would be to build a structure that is attractive and useful. Time will be given later for you to sell and explain your structure to them. However, these wealthy ladies hate seeing standard structures or tripods the most. So be as creative as possible! Lastly, you would have to use all the logistics provided in order for you to be eligible to sell your structures in the auction.

Reflection from a Year 3

The Creative Gadgeting activity during Friday’s 集合 allowed me to understand the importance of having proper 定脚s and a stable structure. The structure that we built was very unstable, as our diagonals and lashes were not tied properly. We could improve by ensuring that our diagonals and lashes are up to standard and tie it tighter in the future. Furthermore, I feel that my patrol can work on having a greater sense of urgency and being more decisive. On Friday, we spent a lot of time arguing and discussing what structure should be built. We also did not involve our Year 2s in the discussion and this caused them to be confused and unaware of the structure. Our indecisiveness has caused us to 过时 and waste a lot of time, thus, in the future, we would try to discuss our plan while starting on the structure and to include our juniors in the discussions. Despite the fact that there is a lot of room for improvement, I think that my patrol 报时ed often during the activity, so we will try to keep it up and to 报时 and cheer even more during 集合s. Overall, the Creative Gadgeting activity has been a great learning experience for us.

Inspection

To ensure they can see all your logistics in the least amount of time possible, we will now be conducting something like an inspection. These wealthy girl guides will expect to see neat and tidy layouts before they can choose what logistics to bring home as souvenirs.

Reflection from a Year 3

For us, our inspection was cut short as we didn't have enough time. My patrol did not have everything in our 配备 for inspection so we could not standardise to the other patrols as much. However, we managed to have our labels facing up and myself and the other Year 3s managed to step up and try to give instructions to the other patrols. We should have stood in the middle and not at the side so P1 could hear us. We should also have given clearer instructions. However, something I have learnt from this inspection is that the 白绳 box is not supposed to be in our inspection layout. Our patrol managed to 照顾好东西 but we need to work on 照顾好人. Overall, I think we could all takeaway a few things from this inspection and learn from our mistakes.

Patrol Corner

This Patrol Corner was used not only for the debrief of today’s 集合 but also to practise the Guides song which we are going to be singing for our mini performance!

Reflection from a Year 3

During Patrol Corner, we had to discuss the performance with the songs we had chosen. We chose the worm song and 南屏晚钟. It was a great opportunity for us to revise the songs and teach our juniors too. We chose a Chinese song which we were not familiar with so we also got a chance to learn how to sing that song from our seniors. Now, we know how to sing it and can teach future juniors such that everyone will know how to sing both English and Chinese songs. I feel that through this, we got to bond and get closer with our patrols. We had to perform our songs in front of everyone, I feel that we got the chance to get out of our comfort zones and learn to sing louder and more confidently, especially knowing there will be a forfeit for those who sing too softly.  This is a great chance for us to be more courageous as we are usually quite quiet and don't cheer or 报时 often. Overall, I feel that it was a fruitful session and we all benefited from it. It was quite fun and slightly different from usual patrol corners and an enjoyable way to end 集合.

Mini Performance

This mini performance aims to help the Year 2s and Year 3s familiarise themselves with the Guides songs that we usually sing during our 集合. We hope that through this, they would be able to step out of their comfort zones and sing the songs more confidently.

Reflection from a Year 3

For the Mini Performance on Friday, I think it was a good bonding experience for me as well as my batchmates. The Year 3s and I got to teach our juniors some of the songs. I feel that we were also able to step up a bit more because we had to take the initiative to speak up and teach the songs to our Year 2s. It was also a good revision for us as we weren't really fluent in singing the songs. The performances put up by the other patrols were nice to watch and we could also brush up on the other songs. I feel that through this experience, my patrol members and I got to bond with each other better as we had to work together in order to sing the song correctly. Overall, this segment was pretty fun.

Hopefully everyone was able to gain something new from this 集合 and that you managed to familiarise yourself with the Guides songs! Rest well and we will see you next week!
