Guides' Training, 28th October

Hi Guides! Last Friday, we had a short initiative session where we completed several badges. After which, we had Physical Training (PT) as a batch. Here are some of the reflections from the Year 2s!

Initiatives:

For our initiative, we had to attempt to complete two badges, the Language for the Deaf and Toymaker Badges.

For the Language for the Deaf badge, we had to write down 10 household items, 10 items used in an office or school, 6 items used in sewing, 10 items found outside the house, 10 items found out of country, 10 words used in Guides, 6 ways of cooking, 6 colours and a short letter regarding sharing good news or asking someone to catch up. Other than this, we also had to collect as many photos of the Guide Law as we could. For instance, I found a picture of a Guide caring for an animal to show that "A Guide is a friend to animals". We spent around forty minutes for these activities. For the Toymaker Badge, firstly, we had to fold origami of a fish using paper. After that, we had to use a plastic bag, a few pieces of string and a weight to make a mini parachute. Lastly, we had to make a mini stuffed toy using fabric and newspaper as the filling. We spent about one and a half hour for these activities.

I especially enjoyed doing the Toymaker badge, since there was more hands on work to be done. I felt that the skills that we had learnt in our school's Life Skills Programme (LSP) came in very useful for this activity when we had to sew up the stuffed toy. Also, our Art project for Year 2 was also very similar to the activity where we had to make the parachute. As the parachute were mainly made of recyclable materials, this taught us to be more eco-friendly and learn how to utilise all the materials that are available to us wisely. I look forward to other initiatives as I find this a fulfilling and interesting session!

Physical Training (PT):

During Friday's 集合, we did our PT in batches. For the first station, we were required to lift up a bundle of 木 in 2 groups, P1 to P3 and P4 to P6. Next, we had to do 30 jumping jacks. Finally, we had to do 1 round of lunges around the level. We had to do 2 circuits in 20 minutes. Although it was a rather tiring activity, we cheered our way through to increase the batch morale, to serve as a reminder that we were in this together, as a batch.

For our next station, we were required to do song PT by singing songs and doing PT, such as squats, at the same time, around the block. It was an enjoyable activity and we had fun singing and exercising to the beats of the songs. The next part was, however, slightly more physically demanding. All of us had to do a total of 200 Kallang Wave burpees in 16 minutes. While one of us was doing a burpee, the rest of us had to plank, or do a leg raise until it was our turn to perform the next burpee. It was pretty challenging, but with the encouragement from our seniors and the countless cheers from fellow batch mates, we made it to 200 burpees, within the time limit.

For our final station, we were required to run from the 4th floor to the 6th floor and back down to the 4th floor again. However, we had to run 1 round around every level first, before proceeding to our next level. Next, we had to run down to the 1st floor and back up again. Many of us were unaware that our batch mates were way behind and we received multiple reminders to look out for one another. I feel that this is one point our batch should work towards and improve on. Lastly, we were required to do 51 Kallang Wave burpees, while the rest did 站马. As the two ends of our chain were rather far apart and some of us were counting in a soft voice, it made it difficult to remember the number of burpees we had done so far. I feel that we should improve on our communication skills and shout out our number of burpees in a louder voice to reduce the wastage of time. Overall, it was a fun PT session as I got to bond more with my batch mates.
