集合, 28th Feb

Hi Guides!

Today, the YAs held a campfire preparation session with us. From 1500 to 1530, the Year 2s taught the Year 1s their basic lashes while the Year 3s and 4s learnt about anchorage. Basically, anchorage makes a structure more stable, and this is especially important in bigger structures where tight lashes may not be enough to ensure their stability. There are many different types of anchorage, but today we learnt the 3-2-1 picket method.

At 1530, we 集合-ed back at the GSL, where we were split into 5 groups of 2 patrols each to learn about setting up a campfire pit.

From 1610, we had creative gadgeting for 1 hour. Other than following the theme of Campfire, we could build any gadgets we wanted. During that time, the YAs also called up patrols to teach them how to light the kerosene lamp. After 1 hour, we were given 5 minutes to think of how to present our gadget to the Company before we had a gallery walk for all the gadgets. It was interesting to see the different ideas that the patrols came up with :) Here are some photos!

Hope that everyone has learnt some new things today and had fun. Rest well and have a good weekend!:D

Patrol Activity, 24th Feb

Hi Guides!

On 24th Feb, we had PA. Some of the activities we had included Outdoor Cooking and gadgeting. In addition, the Year 1s also learnt their basic lashes.

After PA ended at 1730, Amanda, Jie Ying and Tse Puay from the YA Chapter came to brief us about the upcoming CIP during the June holidays. We would be visiting Good Shepard Student Care Centre to conduct some activities with the young girls there. Two patrols would be doing the same activity: either baking, dancing, crafts or carnival games. Everyone in the patrol was involved in the discussion and proposal planning to encourage patrol bonding.

Glad to see many of us actively contributing to the discussion. Let's put in our best for this CIP!:)

WTD Celebrations + Company Games! 21st Feb

 Hi Guides!

On Friday, 21st Feb, we welcomed our new Year 1s into the Dunman High Coy!

Shortly after the Year 1s joined their respective patrols, we ran to LT3 where the Year 1s were briefed about the DHS Guides structure and important events this year. Afterwards, we had Patrol Corner, during which we got to know our Year 1s, play some icebreakers or teach them songs and basic 礼节.

From 1600, we had Company Games!:D As we were also celebrating World Thinking Day, it was incorporated into our Company Games, which was in the form of an "Olympics". The games in the various stations included tug-of-war, relay races, dog and bone, gunny sack race, caterpillar walk and soccer. In some parts of the stations, questions about Thinking Day would be asked.

Hope that everyone had fun bonding with their patrol mates:)

WTD'14 Contingent, 20th Feb

Hi Guides!

This morning, we 集合-ed at 0700 at the parade square in our Guides uniform, ready to form the contingent for World Thinking Day. Along with the Guides were also the Young Adults Chapter, Crane Scouts troupe and Ventures, though for the Scouts, WTD is known to them as Founder's Day.

After flag-raising, we renewed our Guides Promise and had a Company photo-taking along with the Scouts before returning to our classes for lessons.

On this day, we had to wear our uniform throughout the day until flag-lowering, and 敬礼 to the Scouters, Guiders, Ventures, YAs and seniors if we bumped into them. If we met our batch mates, we would then do the left-hand shake as a sign of friendship.:)

At 1345, we 集合-ed back to the parade square for flag-lowering. When we meet tomorrow again for 集合, we would be meeting our Year 1s who would finally join us for Thinking Day Celebrations!:D Look forward to the activities planned:))

Contingent training

Hi Guides!

For the last 2 days on the 18th and 19th Feb, we have been training our foot drill in preparation for World Thinking Day. While there has been an improvement, much more can be done to make our contingent look nicer. Though we do not practice foot drill that often, the commands are quite simple, and the only thing you need to bring with you to contingent training is a good attitude and 101% alertness. Later on in the year, we'll also be forming contingents during Speech Day (for Year 2s) and UG Day so let's continue to improve our standard!:)

Pioneering session!:D 14th Feb

Hi Guides!

For this 集合 on 14th February, we had a pioneering session organised by the YA Chapter. We were split into 6 groups to tie 6 different structures such as gateways, towers and bridges. The first 4 groups comprised of a mixture of Year 2s and 3s while the Year 4s were split into the last 2 groups. Beforehand, we had allocated I/Cs for our own group and came up with a 2h 15min timeline to tie our structure.

Prior to the activity, we were given 20 minutes for the I/Cs to brief us and to practise our lashes. Afterwards, we started working on our structures. Morale was quite high, judging from the loud cheers that echoed throughout the D area in the field.:)

After the time limit, we 集合-ed back and the YAs did a debrief on our structures. Some points to take note of:
  • The protrusions of some spars could have been shorter. This can be achieved by shifting the spar's position or changing the spar used.
  • Main frames were slanted for some structures. Not only does it decrease the aesthetic value of the structure but also make it more unstable as the extra weight on one side by a slanted main frame may cause the structure to topple if it isn't tied tightly and properly.:O This could have been averted by 顶-ing them more properly and having the I/Cs to check on the structure frequently and make the appropriate adjustments until their positions are stable.

Before we 拆掉-ed our structures, we were given 7 minutes to play around with them.

Here are some reflections from some Guides:
A Year 3 - Friday's 集合 was really fun and fruitful! Everyone got to work with spars and 麻绳, instead of just the usual gadget poles and 白绳. The Year 3s were given a chance to really step up as ICs and guide the Year 2s. For my group, it was really frustrating at first because we could not get the quadpod right. The group morale went down because of that and the really hot weather got to us. I as an IC, was really demoralised. But I remembered what my PL said about how patrol morale was so important and no matter what, you shouldn't take your frustrations out on your group members; rather, we should just work and try and solve the problem at hand. My group cheered and cheered, offering encouraging words to one another. It was amazing how we ended the 集合 with laughter and all. I realised the importance of keeping up the patrol morale and cheering. It was really satisfying to see our structure stand as the final product and we really didn't want to 拆 it at all. I really do hope that we will get more opportunities like this and do more pioneering! :D

A Year 4 - As we do not get to do pioneering other than build the standard structures such as kitchen shelter and kitchen table, this activity was really interesting. Also, it was a good opportunity for bonding as we  put our trust into one another to 齐 and 倒 the structure safely, as well as 顶 the main frames properly when there are people tying lashes on the structure. I'm glad to see everyone enjoy the fruits of their labour after working hard. With the upcoming campfire, hopefully more Guides will be able to experience more pioneering.:)

Wait, did someone just say, "campfire"?? X)

Contingent practice

Hi Guides!

On Wednesday, we had contingent practice at the parade square from 1700-1800 to prepare for World Thinking Day. Here are some pointers to take note of:

  • When in sedia position, elbows should be locked. Hence the whole arm should look completely straight. Also, look straight and do not fidget. Wrigging the toes can help to improve blood circulation while in sedia position.
  • Be alert at all times so that there is no lag when a command is given. This way, we won't have to keep on going back to our original position (semua)
  • When lifting your leg to "check", position it at a right angle. This makes the move look smart.
  • Likewise, when marching, the hand in front should be at a right angle to your body while the hand at the back should be at an angle of 45°.
Some of you may ask: why do we need to do foot drill? Well, foot drill instills discipline in the members of the squad. By not fidgeting, we are demonstrating our self-control. Taking pride in how you march and attire also shows your attitude. If you want to do something, do it well. Try your best, isn't that what we emphasize in Guides too?:) Finally, foot drill is not about the individual but the squad. Even if one person messes up, the whole thing will look ugly. It is everyone's responsibility to ensure the overall smartness of the foot drill. So help one another out, teach your batchmates and juniors if you see them having problems, or ask your seniors if you're unsure of what to do. One for all and all for one!:D

PA + CNY Celebrations!:D 7th Feb

Hi Guides!

Hope that everyone has enjoyed their CNY break and collected lots of angbaos haha. :)P Hopefully everyone enjoyed today's 集合 too!

From 1500-1715, we had Patrol Activity. A few of the activities done by the different patrols included revision of basic skills, pioneering and Physical Training.

Afterwards, we had 捞鱼生 and potluck at the canteen!:D One 鱼生 was given to every two patrols, and the Guiders kindly provided us with some finger food as well. We saw a variety of food brought by the different patrols: biscuits, sandwiches, sausages, chips and wasabi seaweed XD

It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves with their patrol mates, laughing and joking together. On a side note, let's put in even more effort when doing serious activities like the PA today. Till next Monday!:)
