集合, 29th May

Hi Guides!

Today marked the last official 集合 for the term before Passing Down Parade (PDP)! :( The Year 3s were absent as they were having their Patrol Leader Training Camp (PLTC).

Firstly, the Guides had foot drills practice in their respective patrols, so as to refresh the memories of the juniors in preparation for PDP. Afterwards, the patrols joined back together to have a mass contingent practice, during which the Guides made a horseshoe formation and the Year 4s went through the procedures for the entire enrollment ceremony. Hopefully, the Year 1s are now clearer on the procedures for their enrollment ceremony!

Next, the Guides proceeded to the next activity- Outdoor Cooking! The patrols were paired up, P1 with P10, P2 with P9 and so on. This was the chance for the Year 1s to acquire the basic firelighting skills and for the Year 2s to practise their skills too. The patrols were all hard at work, trying to start their fires and cook food for the entire patrol to enjoy. The dishes ranged from Mac and Cheese to smores and many more. :) After toiling away, the Guides finally sat down in their respective patrols to enjoy their food and have patrol corner.

Lastly, the Guides had time to PDP Preparation, and the entire company split into the respective batches. All in all, the last 集合 for the term truly ended on a high note, as the Guides thoroughly enjoyed the activities and the bonding opportunities that presented themselves during this 集合. :)

Patrol Activity, 25th May

Hi Guides!
We had our last patrol activity for the term on Monday! It was also the last patrol activity with the Year 4s. :(

Here's the breakdown of the various activities!

P1-7, 10
The Guides had a relay race at the parade square. For each lap of the relay race, the person had to do 5 jumping jacks, 3 pumpings, 2 star jumps and sing a Guides song at different markers (lines) on the ground.

Patrols played Captain's Ball against each other in different courts at the parade square. Patrols rotated at time intervals. Every time someone threw the ball, she had to shout something from 团部 and the object could not be repeated.

Then everyone went to the area near MRL to play dog and bone. Afterwards, the patrols had patrol corner. Overall, it was a really fun and interesting patrol corner! :)

P8
The Guides had Outdoor Cooking with 汤圆 and Fruity Pebbles. Then, they cleared up and had patrol games with P9. Through these activities, the Guides really bonded and this allowed the Year 1s to feel less awkward with their patrol members. :)

P9
The Guides had Physical Training, followed by patrol corner and then patrol games with P8. The Physical Training enabled the Guides to build up their resilience and perseverance!

集合, 22nd May

Hi Guides!

Friday's 集合 was one of the last few 集合s with the Year 4s and the Year 3s were absent as they were preparing for their upcoming PLTC (Patrol Leader Training Camp). Firstly, the different batches of Guides were broken off to do their respective activities. The juniors worked on their Artist Badge, which the Year 4s used the time to plan their PDP (Passing Down Parade) performance.

Afterwards, the batches were separated for Physical Training.

Year 1s
The Year 1s had PT, which included running, kallang wave pumpings etc. They also played games such as Ice and Water (catching), Dog and Bone and many more.

Thoughts from a Year 1...
I feel that Friday's activities were very enjoyable. I had lots of fun while playing the games organised by the seniors. The activity that I enjoyed most was making the artist badge. Although my drawing may not be very good, but I was given the chance to express what I enjoyed most in Guides.

I always thought that physical training was all about endurance and stamina training but after Friday's session of PT, I realised that physical training can be presented in many different ways. I think that the very last game that we played was the most fun but tiring game. I hope that through physical training sessions, my stamina can be built-up to a higher level. Overall. I think that Friday's activities were very engaging and I had lots of fun.

Year 2s
We did PT for the 集合 on Friday. We did a few warm ups before we start the PT, led by Elaine from Patrol 6. There are 3 and a half stations in total. The first half station is that we need run six levels up and run a round on each level before proceeding to the next level. The second station is which we need to do 2 circuits of 320 kallang wave, lunges around the level of year 3 and 4 block, and 50 jumping jacks. The second station is that we need to do 2 circuits of 1 minute full body plank, 30 sec of elbow plank, 3 minutes leg raise and 12 burpees. The 3rd station is games where we need to play catching. For the first round of catchers were Hazel from Patrol 3, Wei Mei from Patrol 5 and me. If a player was caught, she have to remain in girl’s style pumping position until she is saved by another player with a tap on the shoulder. We had PT after that and the amount of PT were according to the amount of times that the players were caught and the number of people the catcher caught. It was divided into 3 categories but I only remembered category 3, which is the category I fall under. It was to do 30 sec of elbow plank, 15 pumpings and 10 jumping jacks. It was also the least amount of PT. For the second round, the catchers were the ICs, the game time was 4 minutes but the game ended at 3 minutes and 45 seconds as all of us were caught at least once, I was caught only once same as a few others as there was not anyone left to save us when we were caught and had to remain in girl’s style pumping position until the game ends. There were also 3 categories and I also fall under category 3 which is the same PT as the previous rounds. There was a debrief after that.

Thoughts from a Year 2...
During the debrief, the ICs praised us of our energy and constant cheering. However, we really need to improve on our sense of urgency when we 集合. Although this PT is a little bit tough, we really pia-ed and cheered a lot and I am really glad that we survived the PT together.

Year 4s
The Year 4s had PT as well. They ran up every floor of the Year 3/4 block and around each level again as they went down. Thereafter, they went to the 4th floor of the Year 1/2 block to continue their PT! They did sets of PT, including wheelbarrows, Buddha claps, planking, 顶 Boys' style, Kallang wave pumpings and burpees. After the PT was completed, they headed down to the road beside GSL to have a game of Captain's Ball. Overall, it was a rather fun and enjoyable yet tiring PT, and we hope everyone had fun!

Hopefully, the Guides were well rested over the weekends! :)

UG Week, 4th to 8th May

Hi Guides!

This week, all the Dunman High Uniformed Groups, consisting of Guides, Scouts, NPCC and SJB, celebrated UG Week as a UG family! :)

The week started off with contingents from each UG and subsequently, representatives from each UG gave a short speech detailing their past and present activities as well as achievements. On Monday, the day of the contingents, the members of each UG donned their respective uniforms for the entire day, truly showcasing the UG pride.

Throughout the week, the Year 1s to 4s from the UGs practised the mass dance together before the celebrations on Friday. The song we danced to is called Uptown Funk.

UG Week ended off with celebrations on Friday, where all the UGs came together once again. The juniors had been grouped into 20 groups, with Year 4s as the facilitators. There were also 5 stations in total. At these stations, the juniors played games and they were awarded points based on their enthusiasm and teamwork.

Game 1: Kangaroo’s tail

Instructions:
Each person will put one end of the string/bandage into his/her pocket, leaving a “tail” of at least 4 inches that touches the ground.
When play starts, players of one group will try to stomp on other players’ tails from the opponent group. They are not allowed to use their hands. Once a player’s tail is out, he or she is out. Once a player gets a tail from another player, he or she will be awarded 1 more life. The group with the player who has the last tail left wins.

Game 2: Telepathy sit-ups
Instructions:
Each group is to form a circle and members are to go to sit-up position, with their legs facing inwards.
When the game starts, a person from each team is to do 1 sit up and shout the number “1”. A different person will then do a sit-up after the person is done and shout another number.
They are to take note to shout the numbers in random order. This people doing the sit-ups should not go in a circle.
Once more than one person does the sit-up at any one time, the game will restart from “1”.
There should be no communication between group members at any point of time.
The group that restarts the least number of times wins.

Game 3: 老鹰捉小鸡

Instructions:
Each team will send 1 person as the “eagle” out while the rest of the teammates will line up in a row with their hands on each others’ shoulders, known as the “small chicks”. The “eagle” has to try and catch the “small chick” who is at the end of the line. They will play in separate courts and the team that has the most number of “small chicks” caught is the loser for each round.

Game 4: Dog and bone
Instructions:
Both teams will go head to head in a game of dog and bone. Each team will have to number off themselves and the team with fewer people will have to allocate two numbers to one person. For the first round, a normal game of dog and bone will be played whereby a number will be called and the person with the respective number will have to run out and retrieve the rope. The opponent has to tap him/her to get the rope. However, the person who was previously holding the rope cannot drop it onto the floor and pick it up immediately when the opponent taps him/her. The rope HAS to be in the possession of someone else FIRST before the person can take back the rope. The second round will be similar to the first except that the number called will have to do a special action whilst retrieving the rope (eg. model walking, walk backwards, march, hope on one leg, etc.) or do special tasks such as PT or execute a certain command. The third round will be UG related as the person called would have to recite the whole sizing command (with the help of their teammates) or recite the pledge of another UG besides the one that they are in.

Game 5: Can you hear me?
Instructions:
One word will be pasted on each of the junior’s backs. All the words combined and rearranged will form a sentence. They will have to 1) Figure out what the sentence is and 2) Form the sentence without any form of communication with each other. As such, they will have to rearrange themselves in such an order that the words on their back form a coherent sentence when standing next to each other. Punctuation will be attached to the previous word.

Sentence 1 (Scouts themed): A Scout makes friends; establishes and maintains harmonious relations. A Scout has courage in all difficulties. (16 words)
Sentence 2 (Guides themed): A guide is useful and helps others. A guide is loyal and can be trusted. (15 words)
Sentence 3 (NPCC themed): Members of NPCC will always be loyal and true, preserve our nation’s peace and uphold the law. (17 words)
Sentence 4 (SJB themed): To enhance Learning Through Self-Awareness and to Mould Characters for Tomorrow. (11 words)

After the mass games ended, everyone gathered for mass dance! The UG members paired up and began dancing to Uptown Funk. Initially, many were quite awkward and didn't really move around but on the second try, they began to loosen up and dance along to the music. Many were laughing whilst dancing, making it evident that they really enjoyed themselves during the mass dance! :)

Afterwards, it was time for prize presentation! All the groups received snacks and drinks, but the top 3 groups received a few extra snacks. :) Eventually, the winner was Group 20!

Lastly, to mark the end of the day, all the UG members had dinner together. During dinner, the groups had the opportunity to bond with their fellow UG members and the new friends they made in their groups!

The UG culture in Dunman High is quite strong, and we hope that throughout this week, the UG members really felt the UG spirit and that they truly took this time to strengthen their ties with members from other UGs! We would like to encourage the juniors to carry on the UG legacy even after the Year 4 batch passes down, and that all of you will continue to strengthen the ties in the UG family. Let the UG spirit continue to burn brighter and stronger each year! :)

Thoughts from a Year 1...
The 集合 on 8 May 2015 was a memorable one. It was my first time celebrating UG Day. I had lots of fun playing the many games provided my our seniors. One of my favourite game was the ‘Dog and Bone’ game. Despite the fact that I was warned multiple times by one of my seniors not to get to excited abut the game, I was still very engrossed in the game. However, I did learn my lesson though with a few small and minor rope burn. Apart from that, I had a great time making new friends and bonding with my current friends. In the end, even if we did not win any of the top three prizes, I had still had quite a lot of fun. I remember when I first started leaning the UG dance, I was actually quite embarrassed. Nevertheless, slowly, I got over it and was rather proud to learn the dance. It was a pleasant experience for me to dance together with my friends and just laugh at each other. All in all, it was a really fun week and I am definitely looking forward to the next UG week and UG Day.

Thoughts from a Year 2...
For UG day this year, it was very fun as i could bond with many other uniform group members. I even made a new friend from NPCC!!
Firstly, we did a UG day mass dance and a small icebreaker game. As we were clueless at that point of time, we did not participate actively. However, as the song started, everyone became very hyper and happy. However, I think that there should be more space/ more orderly as it was quite messy.
For the games, there were 6 stations, and we came in 2nd afterwards! It requires a lot of teamwork and cooperation as well as having fun. Although the games were simple and easy, it was extremely fun for all. I especially liked the stepping-on-the-tail game, which was our first station as the last time I played this game was in primary school. However, there should be games to let one another know the names and be less messy. Overall I had fun and I wouldn't mind a another UG day this year!

Thoughts from a Year 3...
As it happens only once every year, UG day is something special, a day where all four UGs combine to carry out a common activity and bond together. We were split into groups and I was in group 14. We were told to get into groups of different numbers and that the people without a group would have to do a forfeit, but in the end no one did the forfeit because everyone just sat down even those that weren't in a proper group. We were then told to go in pairs and that person would be our dance partners for the first segment, mass dance! I was really lost during that session because I didn't attend the dance practices due to Song Leader training but I managed to sort of keep up with the crowd. Next, we went to our first station, which was to unscramble the words pasted behind the members back without any form of communication. It was tough and because the first sentence was from the NPCC’s promise, we let them take charge as they were clearer. However there were people from other UGs that attempted to sort things but ended up mixing the words up even further. Hence, sometimes it’s better to leave things to the people who are more competent in that certain aspect. The following sentence were two guides laws. And at the start I was a confused and kind of mixed up the two parts of the sentences and I think that shouldn't have been the case because as guides, we should know the laws by heart. Next, we went to the area outside the LT to play a violent game of stepping on other people’s bandages. But it was really fun watching others tackle one another and we cheered a lot during that period of time to boost our morale and to cheer on our group mates. Next, we played老鹰捉小鸡 at the elevated court. It was really fun and exciting and even though we were all exhausted at the end of it, we bonded more in between our UGs and batches through this simple yet enriching game. Lastly, we had a telepathy test whereby our facilitators would say a number and the respective number of people must do a sit up. This was my favourite station because it really relied on luck and camaraderie because any beforehand planning was not allowed. And it was satisfying when we got it right! Afterwards we did more dances, ate and the day ended. This will be the last UG day I’m participating in and it’ll be my batch’s turn to plan for all these activities next year and I hope we will plan it as well as the current Year 4s did!! ^^
