Welcoming New Year 1s, 13th Feb

Hi Guides!

Last Friday, 13/2/15, we welcomed the Year 1s into Guides! Several Year 4s split into various stations (Outdoor Cooking, Pioneering, Gadgeting and Songs/Cheers) to introduce the Year 1s to what we would be doing for future Guides activities! The patrols travelled around in groups. Sadly, the Year 3s were not able to attend.

At the Songs and Cheers station, Year 1s were introduced to Taps, Guiding Light, Edelweiss, and Peace like a River! These songs are a few of many Guides songs that we sing regularly! As for the cheers, the station I/Cs ran through some common cheers such as the Oi cheer. Thereafter, the patrols had a cheering competition and the station I/Cs gave sweets to everyone. For Guides activities, we cheer to keep our morale up and to build camaraderie with our patrol and batch mates. Do cheer and sing regularly during Guides activities! The songs and cheers can be found in your Guides notes.

At the Outdoor Cooking station, basic elements of outdoor cooking such as the fire altar, kindling and solid fuel were introduced. The Year 1s then had a go at starting a fire with matches, kindling and solid fuel while the station I/Cs cooked Mac n Cheese for everyone to enjoy. Outdoor cooking is a basic survival skills in rural areas such as forests. Although we are unlikely to ever get trapped in a forest, it is good to learn how to make our own food. Starting a fire serves many purposes such as cooking food, boiling water and sterilization.

At the pioneering station, the timber hitch was introduced. It is preferred over the clove hitch when used with 麻绳 to tie spars, as it is sturdier and less likely to shift around. The station I/Cs had also built a simple structure of a tripod and a platform to demonstrate the kinds of structures that can be built. The Year 1s then practised the timber hitch on some 白木, then the patrols took turn taking patrol photos on the structure.

Last of all, at the gadgeting station, the Year 1s were introduced to gadget poles, the square lash, and the clove hitch. They were also shown some gadgets like a baggage rack and a creative gadget, a chair. They were then given time to practice the square and the clove hitch. These two are the basic elements in building gadgets, so make sure you know how to tie them well!

集合ended with patrol corner, where the patrols got to know each other better. It is only the start of the year, and here’s wishing everyone a Happy Chinese New Year and a great year ahead!

Patrol Activity, 9th Feb

Hi Guides!

On Monday, the Guides had Patrol Activity! Here is the breakdown of the different activities.

P1
Thoughts from a Year 3...
We 集合-ed at the field. We were given some time to gather the logistics needed for a kitchen shelter and kitchen table. For this PA, it was combined with P4. Our initial idea for the kitchen table was to have two tripods as main frame and mu tied across as benches. We brought duct tape, utters, canvas sheet, 1 麻布袋, 2 metal mallet, aluminium foil. For the 木, we selected 1 深蓝木, 12 红木, 4 青木, 6 白木 and 2 浅蓝木. We were given 1h to finish building the structure. Before we started, the seniors introduced us to the timber hitch, which will officially replace clove hitch during pioneering activities.

At the start, the PL and PS split up, with the PL guiding the building of the kitchen table and hence, the PS taking care of the kitchen shelter. We took quite a long time to build our tripod and it was very unstable, hence we had to redo quite a few times. Meanwhile, at the start, the kitchen shelter was very successful. We managed to 起 quite fast. However, after some time, the 麻绳 of our kitchen shelter kept snapping, hence we should have chosen 麻绳 of better quality. At the 1/2 hr mark, we were quite behind time for the kitchen table. We had to speed up a lot as we tied our lashes. After some time extensions, we managed to complete both structures. However, our lashes for the kitchen table were not very tight. Some of the guylines in our kitchen shelter were not taut and hence, the canvas sheet sagged a bit. We could have also cheered and 报时-ed more often.

Overall, this PA was very enriching as it allowed us to brush up on our pioneering skills. We also learnt the timber hitch. Also, many of us learnt the difference between excaliburs and arthurs.

P2
Thoughts from a Year 2...
For Monday’s 集合, we built a baggage rack and a flagpole. We managed to complete the baggage rack with a time extension. Our lashes were quite tight and we were rather pleased with our baggage rack. We learnt that to make a structure or gadget more stable, there should be more triangles for it to not be shaky. Hence, we tied a 木 diagonally across on one side of the gadget. The baggage rack became much more stable and significantly less shaky. After we placed back the gadget poles back to the 团部, we built a flagpole. We did not manage to complete the flagpole as the 麻绳 kept breaking as we 抽-ed. In the end, we 过时-ed and were punished. I felt that our movements were slow and we should have had a better sense of urgency. We would do even better the next time.

We had Physical Training after that. We ran 10 rounds around the General Science Lab nonstop. After running, the Year 4s showed us a picture of a plant and wanted us to find the plant in order to get an advantage for the next activity. The plant was a small dandelion. In the end, only one of the Year 3s could find the plant. The rest of us had to do forfeit as we did not find the plant. The next activity for us was catching. Once caught by the catcher, one had to go into pumping position and wait to get saved. The person that found the plant in the previous round will be a catcher, along with another person. The catching was very fun as we got to bond with each other as it had been a long time since the last Patrol Activity. We ended the day with patrol corner.

This PA was very enjoyable to me as I got to have fun together with my patrol. I also got to learn new things and polished my skills. I also got to train my stamina from running around the GSL. This patrol activity was truly beneficial.

Thoughts from a Year 3...
During today's PA, we did a baggage rack and a flagpole. As we were quite familiar with the building of a baggage rack, we did not have much queries about the steps to build a baggage rack. However, we asked for time extension as we were unable to complete the structure in time. We then learnt from the seniors how to make the baggage rack more stable. The main point was to have more triangles and we simply had to construct a diagonal across the baggage rack and it would stop shaking. Then, we built the flagpole. As the 马绳 was mouldy, it kept on snapping whenever we 抽-ed. We also learned from the senior how to 绕 the 蜡绳 around the flag by looping. However, we were punished as we did not have a strong sense of urgency.

Then, there was PT! We ran around the GSL but were not told how many rounds we were going to run. We just kept on running and cheering at the same time. We had fun during the run and it also provided us with a chance to exercise more. We plan to include this in the subsequent PAs! :) We ran 10 rounds in total.

We were then shown pictures of 2 plants and we had to find them in a specific area. Those who failed to find had to do PT as forfeit along with those which guessed wrongly. In the end, only one patrol member managed to guess the plant correctly but we still did the PT as a patrol! ^^

Two patrol members them became the catchers of the next game. We were given a boundary and those who had been caught had to be in Girl's style pumping position until someone else saved her. In the end, all of us had to do PT according to the number of times we were caught. All of us had fun through the PT games! Looking forward to more of such! :D We ended off with patrol debrief!

P3
Thoughts from a Year 3...
For Monday’s PA, we built a baggage rack and an 8-men tent. Firstly, we had 5 minutes to gather all logistics from 团部.We had 55 minutes to build both structures.

Afterwards, we started building our baggage rack. The initial progress was slow. We took a little while to realise proper allocation of manpower was important, because we were building two structures concurrently. Hence, we split the Year 2s and Year 3s between the baggage rack and the 8-men tent. For this PA, for the most part, we only had four people working on the structures. Thus, our manpower was very limited.

We realised that we should always take note of the time, to be aware of our time limits and ask for time extensions if necessary. Things got rather hectic and sometimes the manpower allocation was not the best as well, because people got confused as to what to do.

In the end, we decided we did not have enough manpower to do the structures concurrently, so we focused on the 8-men tent first. Unfortunately, after we completed everything, our baggage rack was quite unstable. Hence, we really have to brush up on our skills more, by practising and remembering to after every round in a lash.

P4
Thoughts from a Year 3...
For this PA, we combined with P1.

I feel that my lashes were quite tight but for my kitchen table tripod lash, the 麻绳 I picked was unexpectedly long, so I could have used it to make more rounds and middle 绕 for my tripod lash instead of wasting time 绕-ing the resulting length of 麻绳. I also feel that we needed more loud cheering, since our cheering was infrequent and most of the time we were unable to hear the other half of the combined patrol cheering. We also should have picked better 青木 and 麻绳 for the Kitchen Shelter, as our guylines snapped many times and the 青木 飞脚-ed a lot. I also learned the difference between an Excalibur and an Arthur. At the end of 集合, we realised that the few with black watches had been asked to 重计 time extensions or to time patrol mates tying lashes until the main timing had been lost. I think that it is very important to take note that at least one person has the overall timing to we can keep track of how fast or slow we are.

P5
Thoughts from a Year 3...
At the start of our PA, we did PT such as running around the track, doing circuits and also kallang wave pumpings. We ran 4 rounds around the track and after each round, we got a post- it from the seniors. At the end, the 4 post- its indicated that we would get a cold drink from the seniors. The circuit consisted of doing planking for 2 mins, leg raise for 2 mins and 站马 for 2 min 30 secs. For the running segment, we managed to finish 4 rounds within the given time limit. As such, we got two free bottles of cold sports drink from our seniors. However, we did not cheer much while running. I feel that we could have cheer more and louder as this will be able to boost our patrol's morale. As for the circuits and kallang wave pumpings, I feel that we did not reach the expectations of our seniors as our PT was not standard enough. I think that we should build up on our skills and also our stamina.

After PT, we proceeded to building a flagpole and clothes rack. For the flagpole, we spent quite a lot of time on it as our 银钉 keep coming out of the soil. As we are short of manpower in our patrol, we also had to ask for help from the seniors. From here, I feel that we could have chosen a place with soil which will not only allow us to be able to poke through the soil easily, but it can also prevent the 银钉 from coming out easily. Apart from that, our clothes rack was also unstable. This is because we tied the 定脚 of the A- 架 too high which thereafter affected the stability of the structure. Moreover, not all our lashes were standard and tight. From this, I feel that we should improve our lashes whenever we are free so that the lashes would not be loose when tying structures. We should also look at the big picture so that we can ensure that our structure would be stable.

P6
Thoughts from a Year 2...
On Monday, we had gadgeting for our Patrol Activity. We built two structures, one of them was a structure to hold the 配备 and other logistics and the other one was a creative gadget.

The proposals was done by the Year 3s. When we built the first structure, our lashes were not very tight so the structure was slightly unsteady and it took us less that 3 minutes to dismantle the structure as we could just pull the 木 out with much ease. This activity helped us reflect on our lashing and reminded us that we need to put in more effort/ strength in tying lashes. It also gave us the opportunity to practise a few lashes that we do not usually use such as rafting. Overall our structure could still support the 配备 which was quite satisfactory as we fulfilled our task but there are some areas of improvement that we will continue to work on. For the second structure, we did not realise that the structure was slanted and unsymmetrical which caused the structure to have stability problems. Progress was a bit slow as we were unsure of how to carbon-copy the main frames of the structure but nonetheless we finished within the time limit. I learnt that we should take note not to flip the main frame when carbon-copying. I also learnt that we should use a 木 that is not too long as there will be too much protrusion and the structure would not look as nice.

P7
Thoughts from a Year 2...
On Monday, we built a kitchen table. The main frame was a quadpod, and as it was the first time we were learning how to tie one, we had to practice before building the actual table. We were challenged in the process as there were only 3 people in our patrol, excluding the Year 4s. However, after much hard work and perseverance, we managed to complete it. After which, we brushed up on our first-aid, orienteering and Outdoor Cooking skills. it was indeed a fun and fulfilling PA.

P8
Thoughts from a Year 2...
Today,we practiced our basic lashes during PA (e.g. square lash, diagonal lash, tripod lash etc). We also had a mini race, which tested on our knowledge on some of the basic guides signs. It was really engaging. Following that, we had patrol corner, during which we were given time to reflect on our performance. Overall, we felt that we could have done better as we 过时-ed quite a few times. Nonetheless, 加油 P8!

Thoughts from a Year 3...
For the PA on Monday, we practised our basic lashes such as square lash, diagonal lash and tripod lash on spars. We were told to set a target on how long to tie the lashes and try to hit it. However, we 过时-ed for many of the targets that we had set. I feel that the tightness and time taken to tie the lashes needs to be improved so that we can set a better example for the new Year 1s.

P9
Thoughts from a Year 3...
For Monday's PA, we did 8 men tent, rope ladder and some short PT. For the first part, the seniors asked us how long we needed to build an 8 men tent, to which we said 20 minutes. As we did the tent, we encountered many difficulties such as there was no hole to poke the tent pole through, the ground where we build had rocks in which our tent pegs could not be hit into the ground. To solve the problems, it took a very long time and the seniors also helped us but the situation was hopeless. The tent that we took was old and only had one door which was very weird as P3 which also did 8 men tent had a new tents with two doors. In the end, the seniors told us to stop building the tent. The seniors then gave us a crossword puzzle on various stuffs like FA, trekking signs and general stuff. There were some stuff we were unsure of like certain trekking signs and we could improve in this area. Next, we did a rope ladder. We were quite unsure so we took longer time and we could take better measurements as our ladder steps were slanted. But in the end, some of us climbed the rope ladder. Next, the seniors gave us a sudoku puzzle to solve which left us super confused but we managed to solve our next venue which was GSL level 2. The seniors then asked us to caterpillar crawl around the whole corridor to find things for a simple water filter. We managed to complete within the time limit. We then had patrol corner.

P10
Thoughts from a Year 3...
We were supposed to build two types of kitchen tables (quadpods, tripods) within the duration of the PA. However we took really long to start the actual tying of the kitchen shelter (quadpod) as we had to move from the GSL to the area near MRL which wasted a lot of time. I think that I should have tried to stepped up more as a PS throughout this PA as it is indeed very hard for the PL to lead sometimes. There was a lack of sense of urgency and patrol morale which can be improved on. We only managed to finish the quadpod kitchen table by the end of PA which was really bad since the initial plan was to build two types. However the end product was kind of satisfying after all that shifting of heavy 木s. I really hope that all Year 2s and 3s would learn from this PA and be more serious about the time limits given by the seniors.

Leadership Training by YAs, 6th Feb

Hi Guides!

Friday's 集合 was leadership training by the YAs, which was an Obstacle Journey.

Firstly, there was Warm- Up, which consisted of jogging around the school. Afterwards, there was batch Physical Training, where the Year 2s to 4s were separated. Next, the Guides were given 7 min to mass change into their OJ kits and get all the required logistics. Following that, the OJ started!

Station 1
The Patrol Leader (PL) and Patrol Second (PS) of each patrol were given a proposal for a gadget which the Guides had never built before. They had to remain in Physical Training (PT) positions while giving instructions to the rest of the patrol who could not see the proposal. The takeaway from the station was the importance of clear instructions and communication within the patrol, instead of whether or not the patrol was able to complete the impossible task of building the structure within the time limit given.

Station 2
The PL and PS of each patrol were given instructions which had to be relayed to the other patrol members who had to be split into 3 different groups, with 1 group in each classroom. The tasks in all the classrooms were different. The main objective was to test the ability to communicate effectively.

Station 3
The Guides were given 15 min to complete a lot of tasks such as building a shelter, boundary, flagpole, clothes rack, elevate a 配备, boil water and start a signal fire. The aim of the station was to teach the Guides the importance of prioritising, such as to build the shelter first to protect the Guides from the storm.

Station 4
The station revolved around inspection, where only the PL and PS were not blindfolded. The layout was given to the patrol to memorise before starting the inspection. The PL and PS had to give clear instructions and standardise the layout of both patrols. The station also tested the ability of the Guides to spread the workload.

Station 5
In this station, the Guides had to build a roman chariot. Each Guide was assigned to a lash by the PL, and after 3 min and 4 min for square lash and diagonal lash respectively, the Guides had to 集合, regardless of whether or not she had completed the lash.

P1
Thoughts from a Year 4...
Through this OJ, we were reminded of the basic stuff we learnt in Guides such as constant cheering and 报时. It also reminded us the importance of being good role models for our juniors to follow, especially since we are the leadership batch. Overall OJ was very enriching!

P2
Thoughts from a Year 4...
This OJ gave us an opportunity to know our own standards and where we stand amongst the juniors who are in another patrol, which provided us with a sort of benchmark. We saw for ourselves the pros and the cons of our own leadership and gained invaluable feedback on how to improve for the remaining 集合s before Passing Down Parade (PDP).
P3
Thoughts from a Year 4...
This OJ is very unique as we were reshuffled into patrols that consisted of only Year 4s. Besides, this OJ started off with running and batch PT, giving us the chance to bond with our 届. I felt that it was a very enriching OJ as the activities were catered to providing us with a sense of urgency and sorting out our priorities, and also emphasized on teamwork and communication. The rationale behind each station was clear and I learnt a lot of valuable lessons from this.

P4
Thoughts from a Year 4...
I was appointed patrol leader for the first station -- inspection! I do not usually speak up, but this time I had to, moreover, the rest would be blindfolded. Each of us remembered a part of the layout and was in charge of those items. I was a little unsure on the first try but it was better the second time. We learnt about the importance of allocating jobs well, taking more initiative and also good communication.

For the second station, we had to build a Roman chariot within the time limit set by our patrol leader. We were nearly there but there was definitely room for improvement. I learnt to set realistic goals and work hard to achieve them. The third station required us to build a gadget while listening to instructions given by the leaders who were not allowed to help. I think we did fine as our structure stood. Good relay of information and questioning when in doubt were key to the completion of the task. Our patrol was separated into three in the fourth station. Instructions were only disseminated at regular intervals and we did not have much clue to what we were building. Confused at the beginning, keeping the time slipped my mind and one member had to shout across three classrooms. For the final station the scenario brought us to an island. We were met with a number of difficulties and given only fifteen minutes to deal with them. Prioritization was the lesson learnt; to tackle the more urgent problems first and settling the rest afterwards.

Overall, the obstacle journey was not bad. I learnt to speak up and work well in a team. Although this training was not really meant for us but for the year threes, as seniors, we had to improve our standards. After all came to an end, the seniors gave us their feedback. I was glad to hear praises for juniors from our patrol!

P5
Thoughts from a Year 3...
I found warm up quite tiring, especially since I was not used to running such long distances at one go. It was especially taxing on my lungs as I was determined to constantly cheer loud enough for the whole 团 to hear. I think I need to work on my stamina, especially for my lungs.

For batch PT, I think I did quite well and as a batch we managed to 坚持下去. I feel that most of the reason why we were able to do this was because we were together as a batch, cheering each other on. However, it was quite obvious that the same people keeping up the spirit by cheering were the same people because they're voices were quite noticeable while cheering. My stamina could have been better though, because after the first circuit, out of two, my thigh muscles were burning, although our circuit only consisted of jumping jacks, squats, burpees, leg raise and 站马.

I feel that for mass change, I did relatively well because I managed to change in about half a minute. However, I feel like I need to be more familiar with the 配备 and its contents. Since I am now the patrol QM/AQM, I till now am not sure of what goes into the 配备 in what quantities. However, there was this miscommunication which happened in most, if not all of the patrols which only consisted of Year 2s and Year 3s. Before 集合, we (Year 3s) had asked our juniors (Year 2s) to retrieve the 青木 if the YAs asked us to. For some reason, which appears to be miscommunication, our Year 2s 集合-ed empty handed. This could be because our Year 2s forgot what to do in the heat of things, so I feel that I could have reminded them to retrieve the 青木 before going to 团部 to pack the 配备.

Station 1: outside MRL
I feel that my lashes could have been tied a little quicker because although I started late trying to look for 麻绳, I could have tied a tight 4-3 square lash in 2.5-3 minutes. I also feel that we should be aware of our surroundings as during 拆掉 I was hit by a 青木 and fell out to get my wounds treated. I think that this burdened my patrol because of the loss of manpower. However, I think this has put the point of safety across to my juniors, which is really important.

Station 2: Block G level 3
Since I fell out at the end of the last station, I missed a bit of this station so I wasn't quite sure of what was going on at that time. However, I am quite proud of myself for tying a relatively tight square lash in 1.5 minutes on gadget poles, minus the 绕. I feel like I could have been taking better care of our patrol logistics as I turned just in time to see a YA kup our FAP, which is really important. We also asked for multiple time extensions, and I feel like our PL and PS were really frustrated that we still didn't manage to complete the structure. I was also quite worried by how incomplete our structure was, until I found out that it would have been impossible to complete within the time given.

Station 3: Block F level 6
I think that I did quite well personally for this station, except for the fact that I did not press the button on my watch so we only had one person who 记时-ed across the three classrooms the patrol was split up into.

Station 4: GSL
This station was quite overwhelming as we had to complete many tasks at once. I felt that my firelighting skills could be improved as although my first fire took me only 5 or so matches, my second fire took me much more, which is ridiculous for Year 3 standard.

Station 5: GSL level 2
For this station, I feel that perhaps I could have had more initiative and asked for something to do or tried to do something instead of standing around at calling for my PL/PS, and waiting for her to give me something to do.

P6
Thoughts from a Year 2...
At the first station, the PLs were given a proposal and they have to describe the structure to us and the rest of us will build the structure. Halfway through the station, we realized that we ran out of 白绳. In the end, we were not able complete the structure within the time limit. I could tie my lashes tighter but also under the standard timing given for the lash.

At the second station, there were 3 classrooms with gadget poles in each one. Only the PL and PS were given the instructions and they would tell us the structure to build in each classroom. Every 2 minutes, the station master would tell the PL and PS another set of instructions and they would convey it to us. Our patrol did not manage to complete the structures that the station master has proposed. I learnt to communicate with my patrol mates better as we were all split into 3 classrooms and we have to find a way to convey the message to the whole patrol.

In the 3rd station, we had inspection but everyone was blindfolded except the PL and the PS. We were very confused and were not able to lay out all of our logistics in the time limit. When we lay out the logistics the second time, we did better as we were told what to do before we were blindfolded. I learnt that I should not just rely on my PL and PS who were not blindfolded but also help my patrol as I can still help lay out even if I am blindfolded.

In the forth station, we were given a scenario where we were stranded on an island. We had to build signal fire, boil water, build boundary in a circle with the flag in the middle and also build a shelter for the whole patrol and elevate the 配备. It was very disappointing as our patrol only managed to finish the boundary. I learnt to prioritize and do the more important things like building the shelter first before doing the less important things like building the signal fire.

At the last station, we had to build a structure similar to roman chariot but with two diagonal 红木. We were told to 集合 after 3 minutes if we were tying square lash and 集合 after 4 minutes if we were tying diagonal lash. We took very long to 集合 during the first time as the lashes were not done. We did better the second time but some lashes were loose. I learnt to not only tie the lashes in standard timing but also tie it tighter.

Thoughts from a Year 3...
We 集合-ed at the GSL in our coy tee and shorts. We did some warm ups first and ran one round around the entire perimeter of the school and later were split into our batches to do a set of circuits. This was probably the best PT I've ever done. All the Y3s were cheering really loudly and it was a non-stop cheering! As compared to about a year ago when we were prompted to cheer, now everyone was fighting to cheer! (: It really was a great feeling and so the strain of the PT wasn't even felt anymore!

Next, we were split into our OJ patrols and were given 7 mins to change into our OJ kit and pack our 配备 as well. Almost everyone reached the GSL on time, however most of the patrols didn't have their 青木s. And what was worst was that most of the Year 3s didn't realise that and so it took quite a while before we instructed our Year 2s to take from backstore. This lack of communication resulted in a lot of havoc and we should avoid such things from happening next time.

1: At this station, I was the PL. We were given a very complicated gadget proposal and were told to complete it within 15 mins. Both the PL and PS had to be in pumping position and that meant that we couldn't help our patrol. I gave out instructions to my patrol mates but most of them were quite lost because they couldn't picture what the structure looked like. While two people worked on the ladder, the others started on the main frame. The whole scene was very rowdy with many people not knowing exactly what to do. And even after quite a few time extensions, the structure wasn't completed. We then had to pump 20 for not completing the structure. For this station, I thing the key thing they tested on was how we relayed instructions to our patrol mates and how to build what first in a structure. I think if given a bit more time, we might have been able to get the structure to stand stably.

2: For this station, no instructions were given to the rest of the patrol members and only the PL and PS knew what to do. We were first told to build tripods in the three different classrooms. Most of us were very lost but we just did as we were told. They called out the PL and PS every 2 mins and from what I heard, another new set of instructions were given, meaning that we had to 拆掉 some of our structures. Every 2 mins, the instructions became more and more complex and hard to comprehend. I honestly think the PL did a rather good job of relaying the instructions to us for every room and also remaining calm at the same time. For this station, even though we didn't manage to finish our structures, we learnt the importance of communication and the ability of coping with pressure and stress.

3: We were given 15 minutes to build a shelter for our entire patrol, a flag pole, mark out our boundary, make a signal fire, boil water, and make a structure to elevate our 配备. I was the PS for this station and it was A LOT to digest and the station master only said it once. The PL was quite lost and so I had to instruct my patrol mates what to do. It was very chaotic and the lack of space meant that everything was very cramped. In the end, we only marked out our boundary, build our flag pole and boiled water. Our shelter was very loose and there were holes in our poncho. We didn't prioritise our tasks and that is to build the shelter first. The aim of this station isn't to finish all the tasks because it was quite impossible but rather to test how well we are able to identify which tasks is of higher importance, which we didn't identify accurately.

4: We had an inspection at this station but with a twist: only the PL and PS could see. The rest of the patrol was blindfolded. We were first given 3 mins to lay out everything. It was very messy and I didn't really do much because my PL didn't give me any instructions even though I asked her. And because the PL and PS couldn't touch the stuff, they had to instruct someone else to and that made it all the more challenging. We failed the first time and our layout was very messy. We then redid the whole thing but this time roles were allocated to the respective patrol mates. So after break off, we immediately knew what to do without having the PL to tell us. So the PL and PS guided us along while we arranged the stuff. The final result was quite okay but we could have compacted more.

5: We had to build a roman chariot for this station. Time limits were set by our PL and we had to accomplish them respectively. It was 3 mins for square lash and 4 mins for diagonal lash. So by the 3rd min, those tying square lash had to 集合 and so on. At the first go, we failed miserably due to not laying out the mu properly at the start. Our lashes were really loose and most were not completed. We 拆掉 and re did everything. In the second round, things were better and since I finished my lash early, I went on to tie another one since there were nine lashes to tie and we only had seven people excluding the PL. But because some of the 麻绳 was quite short, most of our lashes weren't standard. This station taught us the importance of sense of urgency and how we should keep to the time limit set by the PL.

Overall for this OJ, it was a very enriching experience. It wasn't like normal OJ where you carried out normal stuff. This OJ really tested us a lot on our leadership skills and how versatile we are. Most of the tasks weren’t actually possible to complete within the time limit but the aim wasn't to get us to finish the task in the first place but rather to test on our soft skills and see how well we cope with circumstances. I’ve learnt to better communicate between my batchmates and Year 2s so that further communication barriers will be avoided.

For this OJ, we were split into new patrols. This itself already poses a challenge as we were not familiar with other patrols' 小队箱s, yet are supposed to pack our 配备s from our new patrols' 小队箱s, to avoid confusion. However, my new patrol was P7 and luckily for us, our patrol consisted of a member from the original P7, so there wasn't much of a problem. We were given 7 minutes after break-off to mass change into OJ kit and get our needed logistics. This turned out to be a disaster when some patrols did not take 青木s, as there was miscommunication within the 团. As such, there was a lot of confusion and a lot of time was wasted, resulting in us 过时-ing heavily. The 团 had to be in pumping position as we waited for the rest of the people to come back with 青木, and it was after a long time that every patrol finally had their 青木s required for the OJ.

For my patrol, we had to go through the order of stations as such: 2>3>4>5>1, together with P2. I was the PL for stations 2 and 4, and the PS for station 1.

In Station 2, the patrol was split into 3 groups and had to carry out 3 activities in 3 separate classrooms concurrently. The PL and PS were to report to the station master(s) every 2 minutes to receive instructions on what to build for each activity. At first, I was very confused and by the time we received our third set of instructions, it felt as if my brain was going to explode. There were too many instructions I had to take in and remember at the same time, putting me in a somewhat panicky state. I wasn't able to lead my patrol well and make sure they know what is going on as a result. Thankfully, my PS was there to go through the stress with me. Afterwards, I tried to note down the instructions given for each structure. This made things a lot clearer and made the task of conveying the instructions to each group much easier. Towards the end of the activity, however, we exceeded the time limit by a whole minute. This was due to a lack of concept of time of the patrol, and also the lack of 报时ing. Also, it was quite disappointing to see the structures being left unfinished. However, after the debrief, it was clear that the aim of this station wasn't to train how fast we complete our tasks, but rather how we cope with stress and react under chaotic situations, as well as communication skills.

For Station 3, we were to build a signal fire, a shelter to protect everyone from a thunderstorm, boil water, build a flagpole, mark out the boundary (making sure it is a perfect circle) and to build a clothes rack which can also elevate the 配备。 I was in charge of lighting the signal fires, and took a very long time to do so as flames from match sticks go off super quickly, and I did it outdoors. Luckily, our seniors from P2 suggested using lighters and doing it indoors. This indeed worked, however, after a long time as the solid fuels took very long to catch a reasonable size of flame. I learnt from this not to blindly stick by the conventional methods, but to change my ways to ensure things progress in time. However, I still wasn't able to produce large amounts of smoke for a signal fire even after dousing it with water, as this method only works for kindlings, which were not available at that time. At the end of the 15-minute time limit, we only had a tripod with nettings done to elevate our 配备, flames in an equilateral triangle and a flagpole up. This station tests us on our prioritization, which was clearly lacking as we attempted the signal fire, flagpole and clothes rack first, when by right these should be of lower priority as compared to boiling water as water hydrates us and make us able to work, and the shelter, which protects us from the storm.

In Station 4, we had Inspection. We were given a minute to discuss the layout amongst patrols and strategize on how we plan to do it. The patrol members were then blindfolded, except for the PLs and PSs, but the PLs and PSs were not allowed to touch the layout. For the first attempt, 3 minutes were given to lay out the stuff. For subsequent attempts, 4 minutes were given, and then 5. I was really quite proud of our patrol as our layout looked neat for every attempt even with the patrol members blindfolded. From this station, I learnt the importance of giving clear instructions, especially when the patrol members are handicapped, so that they would not be so confused as to what to do and what is going on.

Station 5 was the constructing of a Roman Chariot, where each of us were to tie a single lash within the time limit that our PLs set for ourselves. Before tying, we were given 1 minute to take the necessary measurements and put the 木s in place. 3 minutes were given for a square lash and 4 minutes were given to tie a diagonal lash. When the time for our lash is up, we were to 集合 back to the station master. This tests us on our sense of urgency so that our subsequent activities would not be compromised. I also learnt to not take time extensions for granted as it is not every time that the time extension will be given when you ask for it.

Lastly, Station 1 was the station where the PL and PS had to be in leg raise position while giving instructions on building a never-before-seen creative gadget. Even though we were not able to finish the gadget due to the short amount of time given, it was a fruitful and fresh experience being totally unable to physically build the structure. From this station, I learnt to give clearer instructions as only the PL and PS have the proposal, while patrol members are not sure of what to do and how the structure would turn out to be like.

Overall, this OJ wasn't tough on the physical aspect, but it trained our minds and allowed us to grow in endurance and turn stress into motivation. This OJ tested heavily on our soft skills, and I believe we have indeed emerged as better and stronger leaders through the course of this YA leadership training.

Thoughts from a Year 3...
Batch PT was quite fun and not that tiring. However, when we were doing the second circuit of PT, we could start to feel the soreness on our thighs. We went through this PT together, cheering super loudly and also remembered to 报时 which was good.

After batch PT, we had to run around the whole school. It sounded tiring to me at first, especially after doing PT that involved more of our legs. We cheered loudly and our morale was very high throughout the run which helped us to successfully complete the run.

Mass change + pack 配备:
We were given 7 mins to mass change and pack 配备 as well as take 青木 from the backstore. We were generally quite fast and allocated our manpower well. Eventually, we still 过时-ed by a lot mainly because of confusion of who to take 青木. We should better communicate as a whole 团 so that such communication error will not happen again.

Station 1:
The lash that i tied was tied within the time limit but i feel that i should have tied the lash tighter and not compromise on the tightness just to meet the time limit.

Station 2:
In this station i as the PL and i had to give clear instructions while doing leg raise. I should have ensured that my leg raise was standard as i tend to forget that i am doing PT while i am giving instructions. My instructions could have been clearer, although i felt that i allocated the manpower quite well to do 2 main frames at the same time. The juniors have to work on their lashes as they took almost 6 mins to tie the 2 frames which was only 4 square lashes.

Station 3:
I feel that i should ask the PL what's the big picture so as to get a sense of what we needed to do. The lashes that I tied with 2 other people were generally tight and fast and we also remembered to cheer and 报时 which is good. However, we should 集合 on time when the time is up and not only go and 集合 when there's no more time.

Station 4:
this station was a bit chaotic as many tasks had to be done in 15 min. We should have prioritised better and complete the more important and urgent tasks like building a shelter and boiling water instead of trying to compete them concurrently

Station 5:
The PL and PS generally gave clear instructions to us and we strategised well on how we should go about laying out our items as most of us were blindfolded. We were well prepared in the sense that we already memorised the layout before 集合-ing and this helped us to standardise our layout with the other patrol and we just had to focus on laying out our items neatly.

Thoughts from a Year 3...
For this Friday's 集合, it was YA training. Firstly, we had a warm-up as a 团 which is running one round around the school. Even though, it is a little tiring, we still had fun cheering along the way and all of us pia-ed through this warm up. Cheering help us to keep up our morale and we completed one round very quickly. Then, we had batch pt at level 2 GSL. We needed to complete 2 sets of 20 jumping jacks, 10 squats, 3 mins leg raise and 3 mins 站马. All of us were taking turns to cheer to the extent of even competing.:) But,this makes the batch pt very fun and we all could manage to pia through the whole pt. All of us cheered loudly and this keeps the spirit very high for the whole pt. Then, we had OJ. We had to go and mass change and pack our logistics for OJ. The year 2s were in charge of taking the 青木s while the year 3s helped in the packing of 配备. We asked for time extension but as the whole 团 was still not present after the first time extension ended, we remained in pumping position. We could all have a better sense of urgency and need not ask for too much time extension. Then, was OJ.

Our first station is, at the GSL. We were given a series of instructions on what we had to build in 15 mins. We split the patrol into 2 where some started on the flagpole and some on the distress fire and boiling water. We were then told to 集合 as the senior said we did not have a sense of urgency. We also asked for time extension but we still failed to complete everything. We were then briefed that the main purpose of this station was to test on on how we prioritise our time. We learnt that we should have built the shelter first to protect ourselves and the flagpole the last as it is not that important.

Station 2 was at level 2 of GSL. We had blindfolded inspection. All of us were allowed to read through the inspection layout before everyone blindfolded themselves except the PL and PS. We had to layout everything within the time limit but as we failed to do so and even 集合-ed back late, we had to pump 20. We then packed everything back and then had to layout again. This time, the seniors gave us some suggestions on how to improve. But the same problem of 集合-ing back late still happened and we had to pump. But,this time, we improved on our layout. We were then given one more chance to improve on our layout. We completed it in time and we learnt alot through the suggestions of the seniors. We had to communicate among ourselves and the PL should not be the only one doing everything.

Station 3 was at the MRL. The PL was given instructions on what we had to do which was basically building a Roman chariot. We had 3 mins to tie a square lash and 4 mins to tie a diagonal lash before all of us 集合-ed back. All of our lashes were either not tight or not completed. We were then given one more chance but we still failed to complete it. We were pumped 20 for our lack of sense of urgency and loose lashes.

Station 4 was at Block G level 3. The PL and PS were given the proposal and they told us what we L and PS had to remain in pumping position or leg raise. Communication between the patrol was very important. We did not manage to complete the whole structure and were pumped for our lack of sense of urgency.

Last station was Block F level 6. There were 3 classrooms and we splited the patrol up. The PL and PS were given instructions once at a time on what to do in each classroom. We did mother manage to complete all the instructions and it was also due to the lack of time left for this station. However, we learnt that the main objective is to communicate among the patrol so everyone could be sure of what to do.

That was then the end of OJ before we kept the 配备 and logistics back to 团部. All of us learnt a lot and to also have a better sense of urgency.

Thoughts from a Year 3...
For friday's 集合, we had YA skills training. For the first part we had physical training. As a warm up, we had to run one round around the school with a YA leading in the run. After that, we split into our 届 to have further warm ups. One person from our 届 had to step out to lead in the warm ups. Next, we had to do circuits. The circuit consisted of 20 jumping jacks, 15 burpees, 10 squats, 3 min leg raise and 3 min 站马. We had to do the circuit twice. After that, we 集合-ed at the GSL and awaited further instructions. Next, we were give 7  min to mass change into our OJ kit, pack our 配备and get our 青木. However, due to some miscommunications, we 过时-ed a lot. After that, we were given our patrol pairings. P1 with P6, P2 with P7, P3 with P8, P4 with P9 and P5 with P10. For our patrol, new members joined us as our patrol had insufficient manpower for the OJ. Our station sequence was 5, 1, 2, 3, 4.

For our first station, it was located outside MRL. Only the PLs were allowed to see the proposal. For the first minute we were given we had to take the necessary measurements and brief the patrol. After that, we had to finish each lash in the structure within a time limit. Square lash 3.5mins and diagonal lash 4.5 mins. It turns out that the structure resembled a roman chariot and we had to use it to transport people. However, our structure did not really have a trapezium shape and we had to redo it in the same time limitations. I think this station really tested us on our sense of urgency and our lashes quality.

For the next station, it was at lvl 3 of block G. The YAs gave the PL and PS a proposal which only they could view and not the rest of the patrol. The PL and PS had to give instructions to the patrol while doing PT items, hence restricting their movements. The structure to be built resemble a 2 storey structure with a ladder. This station tested us on our decision making. This was to see whether the PL and PS could weigh the importance of the different parts of the structure and find out the priorities. Unfortunately, our structure was not able to stand. Also, we ran out of 白绳. Instead of removing 白绳 from our previously built ladder, we could have taken the ones on our ling ling long long or borrow from other patrols.

As for the next station it is at level 6, block F. We had to build some structures in 3 classrooms. After every few minutes, the PL will be called out and a new set of instructions will be given to her to tell the patrol of what to build next. This station is about having a sense of urgency and also having a good manpower allocation as it is best to have at least 1 year 3 in each classroom so that she will be able to help the year 2s. However, we did not manage to build finish any of the structures and we were often a few instructions behind. I feel that we could have worked and tie faster and also allocate our manpower properly.

The next station is at the GSL where we had to do a series of things: build a signal fire, boil water, build a shelter and also marked our boundary with a 旗杆. This station is about prioritising what we required to do. The proposed sequence is: building shelter, boiling water, building the 旗杆 and lastly, building a signal fire. Apart from the shelter, we managed to finish the rest. I feel that we should have prioritize properly and do the necessary things first before doing the redundant (eg. The shape of the boundary) ones.

For the last station, it was at level 2 above GSL. This station is about inspection and we had to lay out all our things as seen in the proposal which the YAs have drawn out. However, this inspection was different from what we always did. Apart from the PL, everyone were blindfolded. It was only after a few minutes when the PS can also take out her blindfold. This station is about having a sense of urgency and is also about allocating our manpower properly. Unfortunately, we did not manage to lay out everything according to the proposed layout in time. I feel that we could have allocated one person to be in charge of 1- 2 items instead of just asking them to memorise the layout.

Obstacle Journey, 30th Jan

Hi Guides!

For the 集合 this Friday, the Year 2s and 3s went through an Obstacle Journey (OJ). The Obstacle Journey consisted of 6 stations.

Prior to the start of the OJ, the Year 2s and 3s were reshuffled into 6 new patrols, which came as a surprise to many. Afterwards, they had to take their logistics and layout everything according to the inspection proposal given to them by the ICs, and these were to be completed within 12min.

Several stations, like the electric minesweeper and the cave were pretty unorthodox, and guides were required to make use of their creativity. We hope you had fun completing these stations!

Station 1
At this station, the patrol had to navigate an electric minesweeper, answer questions and do circuit PT.

In the minesweeper, each box a pair takes a chance on may contain either a bomb or a question. The questions are either found in the guides notes or general knowledge, and the patrol has to answer to questions correctly in order to cross the electric minesweeper.

After the safe path has been found, the patrol can then go through the electric minesweeper in pairs and do PT.

Station 2
In this station, the Guides will have to train their sense of urgency and communication within the patrol by having 2 missions to complete.

The first task was to build a Roman Chariot and transport the member over a short distance. Only 5 minutes were given to tie the structure. In addition, the patrol had to pair up and wheelbarrow during the course of the activity.

The second task was to set up a fire as strong as possible using kindling in 5 minutes. Only 15 matchsticks were given and if the patrol needed more, they would incur certain penalties.

Station 3
At this station, the patrol was split into two groups to complete separate tasks. The objective of this is to give more y3s and y2s more chances to speak up and lead.

The first group had to orienteer their way to a bamboo clump to tie a ribbon there for the other group to find. Thereafter, they had to build a catapult and fire paper balls at a post-it on the wall.

The other group had to elevate a water bottle and their 配备  to the height of the railing at the landing between the first and second floors. The group was provided some spars to help complete the task. Everyone managed to complete this by attaching the logistics to one end of a spar and -ing the spar, thereby raising the logistics to the required height. Thereafter, the group had to orienteer their way to the bamboo clump where the rest of their patrol had previously tied the ribbon.

The final task was for the patrol to combine the phrases written in Guides Code on the two ribbons to get ‘Our Lovely Guiding Journey’.

Station 4
At this station, the patrol was required to evacuate a patrol member from the cave and to build a structure to get out of the classroom.

Firstly, the patrol was required to create a light source in order to find their way in the dark. A matchbox, 2 candles and 4 matchsticks were scattered around the room for the patrol. Thereafter, the patrol was required to treat the injured patrol member, who was unconscious and had an open head wound.

The solutions are as follows.

Checking Response
Gently shake casualty’s shoulders.
“Can you hear me?” “Open your eyes.” “What is your name?” “Squeeze my hand.”

Opening the Airway
1.     Kneel by the casualty’s head; place one hand on his forehead.
2.     Gently tilt his head back.
3.     Pick out any obvious obstructions from his mouth.
4.     Place the fingertips of your other hand under the point of the casualty’s chin and lift it.
5.     Check to see if casualty is breathing.

Checking Breathing
Keep the airway open. Look along the chest for movement indicating breathing. Listen for sounds of breathing and feel for breath on your cheek.

Open Head Wound

Head Wound
Treatment:
1.     Replace any displaced flaps of skin over the wound. Reassure the casualty.
2.     Cover wound with a sterile dressing or a clean, non-fluffy pad. This will help control bleeding and reduce blood lost, reducing risk of shock.
3.     Secure dressing with roller bandage or with triangular bandage using the head bandage method.
4.     Help casualty lie down with head and shoulders slightly raised. Send casualty to hospital. Regularly measure vital signs.

For the final part where the patrol had to build a structure to get out of the room across the ‘hole’ that was in their way. The proposed solution: Tie the legs of two tables together with 白绳 such that it forms a bridge shape. Make use of put 麻绳 through the pulley knot. Tie one end of the 麻绳 to the table and another end should be held tightly. The patrol members then lower the table such that it acts as a bridge across the ‘gaping hole’.

Station 5
The scenario for this station is as follows:
The sun is setting fast and you still have not found a place to stay for the night. Dormitories in Dayton are too expensive and you cannot afford such luxury with the amount of time you have left. Desperate without any other solution, your patrol has decided to spend the night in a forest nearby. Unfortunately, one of your patrol members has suddenly lost conscious and collapsed onto the ground. It also started to drizzle and a storm will come soon so you have to work faster than ever.

Patrols were first given 9 minutes to build a structure that could shelter at least 4 patrol members and elevate their 配备. A suggested solution would be using ponchos to cover the sides of the bench for shelter and tying 4-6      across the legs of the bench for elevation. Thereafter, the station masters would pour a pail of water over their structure to ensure the feasibility of it.

Then, the patrol would have to treat the unconscious patrol member. The whole patrol except the PL and PS would be blindfolded after the first 2.5 minutes, the purpose of which was to test the communication of the patrol.

Station 6
This station was the gas room. At this station, patrols were given 10 minutes to find the two switches which controlled the gas in the room and find and treat the two patrol members who were casualties.

As this is a gas room, guides have to cover their noses and mouths with their scarves, as well as crouch low at all times. The patrol also has to shake the door before opening it, open all windows and switch on all lights and fans.

The first casualty was unconscious while the second has a shoulder dislocation. Additionally, the second casualty is also suffering from something unknown to us, whereby her symptoms are Confusion, Headache,  Repeated questioning about what happened, Temporary memory loss, Brief loss of consciousness, Nausea and vomiting, Speech problems (inability to answer questions or obey simple commands), and Light sensitivity/blurred vision. Guides should be able to do this as this is basic first-aid and it is in the guides notes.

Pioneering activity
After the OJ, patrols 集合-ed at the GSL for a mass activity. The task was for the guides to build a bridge in 22 minutes that could hold all the Year 2s at once. Only 3 patrols could work on building the bridge at any one time, and the other three patrols would be completing sets of PT. At regular intervals, the groups of patrols would switch. Although they tried their best, the guides did not manage to complete building the bridge in 22 minutes.

The suggested solution was two tripods and rafting 黑木 across as it would save time.

P2

Thoughts from a Year 3...
We 集合-ed at the GSL in OJ kit. When the ICs informed us that we were be allocated to new patrols, I was rather taken aback. I never imagined that this was what the seniors meant by “prepare for the unexpected”. My new patrol was P2 and luckily my class mate, Qiliu was there so I had someone close to rely on. We were given 12 minutes to take our required logistics and lay them out on the grass patch in front of the GSL. After break off, we ran to 团部 to pack the 配备 after telling the y2s to take 青木. Carrying everything down, we started laying them out on the ground sheet. As there was a new layout to follow, everything was in a frenzy and it was quite chaotic.

The people holding the layout didn’t really speak up much so I went to one of them and started shouting out the layout to P1-P3. I kept asking everyone to compact as much as possible and also to align the groundsheet to the curb so that it will be neater. Luckily, we managed to complete everything in the given time and we were then given 2 minutes to pack up everything and 集合.

We were then given 5 ice cream sticks and were told that each ice cream stick could be used in exchange for an extension of one minute in any of the stations. A maximum of 6 ice creams sticks can be given as a reward at each station depending on our performance.

1: I was the PL for this station. We were required to transport a person across a distance and so we decided to build a roman chariot. In the meantime, we were required to take turns to do lunges too. Even though we managed to do everything within the time limit with one extra minute of extension, our roman chariot was not tied very tightly and it could be dangerous if someone were to fall. Also, the person 顶-ing on the chariot should ding on the upper parts of the 青木 instead. We should take note of such minor details in the future. Next, we were given 7 minutes to start out as many fires as possible but using only a maximum of 15 match sticks. We managed to start 3 fires that lasted 1 minute consecutively. But our 木麻黄 was a little wet as there was smoke so we should take note of the condition of our kindling next time round. Overall in this station, I felt that our 动作 was quite fast but more minor details could have been taken care of. We were rewarded with 6 ice cream sticks.

2: In this station, Qiliu was the PL. We were split into two groups and I went along with the PS, Sheena, to the other section of that station. For this part, we were required to tie a structure to elevate our 配备 and first aid pouch to a certain height. After a lot of discussion and hesitation, we finally tied a clove hitch and attached the 配备 and first aid pouch to the mu. At first, our lash wasn’t tight enough and the 配备 sort of dropped down. So we retied it afterwards. This could have been very dangerous if the 配备 were to come crashing down on one of us. We had one minute of time extension after exchanging it for an ice cream stick. We later had to do orienteering to locate a ribbon. We then solved the guides quote written on it. After we 集合 again as a patrol, I realised that none of us had the five ice cream sticks. I went back to search for it but I couldn’t find it. Somehow we must have lost it somewhere during all the hassle.

3: In the next station, Yuting was the PL. We were told to locate sources of light. We took a rather long time to locate the candles and match sticks. We then treated the respective casualties and also we used the two tables to make a simple structure to cross over the “box” and out of the door. In this station, I felt that we had absolutely no sense of urgency and the PL didn’t speak up at all. The whole patrol was extremely lost because there were no instructions given.

4: Qiliu was the PL for this station. We were given 2.5 minutes to discuss what we had to do before the rest of the patrol members blindfolded themselves. We had to build a shelter and a structure to elevate the 配备 and also a stretcher. We decided to make use of the bench available and place mu across the legs of the bench to elevate the 配备. Then, we decided to put the poncho across the bench to serve as a form of shelter. As we were not careful enough, almost all of our logistics got cupped by the seniors. As by the time we finished discussing, all the other patrol members were blindfolded and as we were not careful enough, one of the patrol members got cupped. As we did not have enough time and did not realise we needed to build a stretcher, we 集合-ed and asked for time extension to complete. We had some conflicts on how to build the stretcher but quickly sorted that out. However we built it wrongly with 白绳 when it was supposed to be with 3 belts. We learnt that the PL and the PS really had to work very closely together in this station as they are the only two people left without blindfold and they need to give clear instructions so the rest would mother what to do and do it fast as there is limited time. We could have done better and not asked for so any time extensions without completing the structure. As our shelter was not good enough, when they poured water over our shelter, our 配备 got wet.

5: I was the PL for this station. There were two casualties in the gas room and our aim was to treat them. I led the rest of the patrol in and told them to put their scarf around their nose and mouth and open all the windows and turn on all the fans. We had to look for clues to find the switches. But we totally forgot that the main priority was to get the casualties out of the gas room before treating them. In the end, we were quite unsure of how to treat the casualties and didn't manage to fully treat them. Based on the 2 clues, we had to solve the word. We were unsure of what the numbers meant but by the time we did, we had run out of time. I felt that as a PL, I totally did not carry out my duties well and I didn't give clear enough instructions to my patrol mates.

6: Sheena was the PL for this station. We had to start from one side of the square and get to the other end. In each square, we had to answer a question based on general knowledge and from the guides notes. At the same time, each pair had to come out while the rest did a PT set in the form of 3 mins girl's style, 1 min leg raise and 1 min planking. Altogether we had 12 mins, we did not complete the the entire path and as our stuffs got kupped, we were punished. Also, as we did owe the seniors ice cream sticks, we were punished again. We could have a better sense of urgency and taken better care of logistics and learn from the previous stations.

I think this OJ is my worst one yet. I'm quite sure my patrol got last because the number of ice creams sticks we had left was zero and yet we still owed the seniors some, making that a negative number. The seniors did acknowledge that our patrol was indeed smaller than the others and the manpower we had was definitely not the best but I felt that I could have still contributed more. A lot of times, the PL didn't give clear instructions and I did overpower the PL quite a couple of times. I felt that a lot of times, my patrol mates weren't very cooperative and they didn't adhere to instructions exactly and hence we wasted a lot of precious time. This OJ is really disappointing and many of our logistics were cupped too. We should have taken care of our logistics more and 报时 too. I should learn to step out of my comfort zone more and adapt well to situations that are thrown at us. Instead of looking at what others couldn't do, I should reflect on myself and ask myself what I could have done better.

P3
Thoughts from a Year 2...
During OJ, our first station was Station 3, where our patrol was split into half and we were required to lift our配备 and one water bottle to the gap in the wall between the first and second floor and also orienteer. Although our patrol managed to finish the task, we had to ask for time extension. I could learn to orienteer better next time as I was unsure of how to use the compass at the station.

Our 2nd station was Station 4, the station where we had to find a light source, treat a casualty and also build a structure to cross an imaginary hole. We took quite a long time to find the light source, which was a candle. In the end, we used 2 tables and slot spars underneath the table so that there is a platform above the hole for us to cross.

At our third station, our patrol had to build a stretcher and a shelter to cover 4 patrol mates and our 配备, with the配备 elevated from the ground. All of us except the PL and the PS had to blindfold ourselves after 2 and a half minutes. We used a nearby bench and table and spread poncho over it and use gadget poles to hold the poncho down. However, I think I can help to look after my patrol mates better as the station masters cupped our patrol mate during the activity.

Our forth station was the poisonous gas room station, where we had to find two switches and treat 2 casualties, one of them whose only the symptoms were told. I learnt that we should put the casualties as the priority and bring them out of the poisonous gas room and treat them first and find the switches if we have extra manpower.

Our fifth station was the coal mine station, where 2 patrol mates step into the coal mine and answer girl guides related questions. The other patrol mates would do a circuit of 3 min girl’s style position, 3 min leg raise and 1 min planking. Our goal was to reach the other side of the coal mine. However, in the end, we did not manage to reach the other end of the coal mine. I could have familiarized myself with the guides notes more to help my patrol.

At our last station, we had to build a structure to transport a patrol mate from a point to another point and back again. While building the structure, 3 patrol mates have to do lunges across a length and run back. We also have to light as many fires as possible and sustain it. I could improve on my fire lighting skills as it was difficult for me to light a fire using matchsticks.

Thoughts from a Year 3...
For Friday's 集合, we had OJ. To our surprise, we did not worked in our usual patrols. Instead, the 团 was reorganised into 6 different patrols.

For the first part, we had to pack our 配备 and get 2 青木 for the OJ. Communication was quite fast as the QMs were able to sort their items out quickly and pack for the new patrol. First, we had inspection. We had to lay out all our items according to a layout given by the seniors. It was quite chaotic at first. However, we all managed to sort out everything at last. After some inspecting, the seniors confirmed that every patrol had the required equipment for OJ. After which, the seniors break us off to head towards our respective OJ station. The sequence for patrol 4 was 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3. With that, we headed for our first station which was at 2J classroom.

For the first station, we were supposed to rescue a casualty from a collapsed gold mine. However, we had to find a source of light before we can do so. Finally, we managed to locate a candle and intended to light it with matches from our survival kit. However, the station masters informed us that we had to find other sources of fire from the room. We wasted much time but finally found a matchbox and some matches. However, due to our slow progress in lighting the fire, we were allowed to treat the casualty concurrently. Also, we had to build a structure such that we can cross over to the exit of the gold mine without coming into contact with an area marked with masking tape. For the first aid part, i think we can brush up on our skills. After some time, the structure was completed. Everyone managed to exit the tunnel using the built structure. However, we were unable to transport the casualty across it. Our structure made used of 2 青木 which was tied to a table and on the other end, it was propped up by another table.

For the second station, it was at level 3 of block G. We were given the task of elevating our 配备, constructing a shelter, treating a casualty and building a stretcher to transport her. Also, after 2.5 minutes, everyone in the patrol will be blindfolded except for the PL and PS. For our patrol, we used two 长木 and tied them under a nearby bench such that it can hold the 配备. We also placed ponchos over the bench such that it acted as a shelter. Meanwhile, 2 people from our patrol went to treat the casualty and also build a stretcher with 青木, poncho and belt. However, we should have used just one poncho only and three belts instead of two. Luckily, our 配备 was elevated high enough and hence, when the seniors poured water in, our 配备 did not get wet.

For the third station, it was the gas room station. When we entered the gas room, we shook the door and prevented a stray object from falling on us. However, we did not react fast enough to realise that we had to cover our faces with our scarf and crouch down low as we move around. After which, we started crawling on the floor until we reached the entrance to two different tunnels. We avoided the one with a danger sign label and entered the one which said get through here. After that, 2 patrol members went to treat the first casualty we encountered. However, we should have switched on the fans and opened the windows first to ensure ventilation. After that, we carried the casualty out and treated her for concussion. Meanwhile, the rest of the patrol found the second casualty and brought her out. With the help of the clues, we solved and found both switches. Unfortunately, at this station, many of our patrol logistics were kupped and hence, we had to pay with 1 ice -cream stick instead. Time extensions also took away some of the ice-cream sticks we earned.

For our fourth station, it was the mindsweepers. Every patrol member had to do PT while a pair of guides entered the mindsweeper. We had to avoid the bombs while heading towards the destination. For every bomb we avoided, we had to answer one question. We were tested on our guides notes and also general knowledge such as the PLs of the 45th jie and also guide law and symptoms of hyperventilation. We did not perform very well for this station as we were stuck at the PLs' question for very long. Hence, we were unable to complete the mindsweeper course.

For the fifth station, we had to build a roman chariot within 5 minutes while a few patrol members did lunges down the red tile area. We made a mistake by asking for an unnecessary time extension. Next, we had to transport a patrol member to and fro within 2 minutes. 8Afterwhich, we had to start as many fire as possible on a zinc plate and also sustain it for a minute. We managed to sustain around 3 to 4 fires and hence accomplished the mission. After that, we had to extinguish the fire and also dismantle the roman chariot.

For the final station, it was along GSL. Our patrol was split into two groups. For one side, we had to make use of orienteering to locate a landmark and tie a ribbon on it. I think we can brush up on our orienteering skills as we had trouble locating the landmark. After that, we had to build a catapult and aim at a target. However, our catapult did not work out well as it was unstable. On the other hand, the other patrol members managed to tie a structure to elevate a 配备 and one water bottle. At the end, we had to solve a guides code. The final solution to the guides code was adapted from the guides notes. (Our lovely guiding journey?)

After all the stations, we reported back at the GSL. After calculations, we realised that we had 15 ice-cream sticks. It was heart warming as those ice-cream sticks were achievement from our hard work. From this OJ, we learnt many important learning points and we also exercised on our flexibility to adapt to new patrol members. To end off the OJ, we had to build a structure with the rest of the patrols. This structure had to elevate all the y2 guides on it. While 3 patrols construct the structure, the other 3 will be doing physical training. Unfortunately, due to the previous time wastage, we were unable to finish the structure. However, this was indeed a very benefitting OJ.

Thoughts from a Year 3...
Station 5:
Station 5 was at block g level 3 and the task was to build a structure that could elevate 配备 and hide four patrol members within 12 minutes and after 2.5 min, everybody except the PL and PS will be blindfolded. Concurrently, one patrol member will also be a casualty and some of us would have to build a stretcher and treat the casualty. Our patrol split into half with two of us building the stretcher and FA while the rest build the structure. Both the PL and PS were building the structure thus for this part I think we could have better allocation. However the PS went over to help the FA people once they were blindfolded. As there was a bench there, we made use of it and took our ponchos to cover the holes and entrance. We placed our 配备 on the seats and tried to cover it with poncho. We asked for a one min thirty seconds time extension but the result was still kind of disappointing as there were still some parts not fully covered and the seniors poured water over our structure which kind of wet our 白绳 and spill on those under the structure but it was partially our fault. From this station, I think we had to have better sense of urgency and better know how to build the stretcher. PL could also speak more and louder and have better morale like cheering and 报时. Somebody also got kup by the seniors which reminds us to better 照顾好 our patrol members.

Station 6:
Station 6 was located at 4C classroom and it was a gas room where we had to go in and switch off the gas taps and also find and treat 2 casualties. We did not take care about small details such as the trekking signs which we were supposed to follow and we did not crouch and cover our nose and mouths with our scarf. As a PL, I did not allocate manpower properly and also take note of the small details. Treating the casualties should have been our priority but instead more people were solving the guides code to switch off the gas tap instead. We should look at the bigger picture and realise that treating the casualties should be our priority, especially in a gas room.

Station 1:
Station 1 was the minesweeper station where we had to guess which path to take and each correct box which we go to will have a question for us to answer. We generally did well in this station as we managed to decipher the path and also answer the questions correctly. We also 照顾好 our logistics but we should have been faster in our movements like when we were changing pt positions or tucking in our scarf. We should also treat the raffia strings as real minesweepers and prevent our body from coming into contact with it.

Station 2:
In this station we were given 5 mins to build a roman chariot and 2 mins to transport one person on it. Meanwhile 2 people have to do lunges. We took too much time to layout the spars and also to tie our lashes. Although our lashes should be tight, we took a long time to achieve tight lashes and we had to ask for time extension to finish tying the roman chariot. We should have tied our lashes faster and tight at the same time and t=not think that we would be granted time extension as long as we ask for it. For the second part of this station, we needed to start and sustain as many fires as possible with 15 matchsticks and kindling in 4 mins. We wanted to start 3 fires at first but we changed it to 2. However in the end the second fire wasn’t sustained long enough. We should have better fire lighting skills and also sustain our fires properly.

Station 3:
For station 3, our side had to do orienteering and build a catapult to hit a target. We took a lot of time to get the orienteering correct and tie a ribbon to the landmark. We had to ask for time extension. However we kept going towards the same direction just that the pacings were weird and we could have took smaller pacings. Despite this we managed to build a catapult with two a jia. We tried to hit the target though it was so close but we ran out of time. For the other side, the rest of the patrol had to elevate a 配备 and bottle to the height of the first railing. We did generally well as our solution was simple and we completed our task in time. For the next part, we had to orienteer and find the post its. We could have better involved the year twos and also be more familiar with our orienteering skills. After that we had to solve a guides code within one minute before the all patrol members came together and put the words together. It spelled "our lovely guiding journey".

Station 4:
Station 4 was located at 2J classroom and our task was to find a source of light, treat a casualty and build a structure to cross a hole to get out. We were given 12 mins in total to do so. As soon as we went in we started searching for the source of light. The seniors keep prompting us to look more carefully as we kept passing by the places where the stuffs were located without noticing it thus we took quite long. Eventually we still found the three items a candle, matchbox and matchsticks. Next, the PL and somebody else treated the casualty which had a protruding bone and head wound while the rest of the patrol build a structure. It was kind of frustrating when the seniors keep saying that using the doughnut to hold the protruding bone still was wrong and too flimsy or elastic but it was actually correct. We wasted time on it as they kept telling us it was wrong. While doing so, the rest of the patrol had to think of a way to cross a hole which was to overturn two tables and put four 青木 on top to allow us to cross it. It worked and some of us managed to cross it while the rest helped the FA side. In the end we did not have enough time to treat the casualty. I think this is partly not having a sense of urgency, not being observant enough. As what the seniors say our morale was low and they had to keep prompting us to 报时 and cheer. The PL could also give clearer instructions to the patrol. We could also learn our FA better but it was actually correct in the first place when we treated the casualty.

Thoughts from a Year 3...
I was very surprised by yesterday's OJ as I would never have expected that we would be switched around so that we did not remain in our original patrols. However, I feel that our performance during the OJ could certainly have been improved on. Our sense of urgency was quite low for the whole entire OJ and we 过时 for quite a lot of the stations. Also, our patrol morale was not very high in some of the stations and we had to be prompted many times before we 报时 and cheered. Our lashes could also have been improved especially for the Roman Chariot as our lashes were very loose and this is very dangerous for the person on top. I feel that I should also have stepped up more when I was the PL and gave clearer instructions. Overall, I feel that we can learn from the mistakes that we made during this OJ and thus do better for the next one.

The Guides certainly learnt how to "Be Prepared" through this OJ and we hope that the Year 2s and 3s have improved in their Guides skills! :)
