Hello
Guides! (:
Last
Saturday, we had our annual hike at Botanic Gardens! This was a special
activity held every year to bond the patrol from a different kind of 集合!
Everyone 集合-ed
at the school foyer at 7:40 am and after taking attendance, we bothered the bus
that brought us all the way to Botanic Gardens.
The
I/Cs briefed the Company on the hike. Here is the storyline:
Hello fellow guides, or should we
call you, runners? You are tasked with your final mission to be executed today.
Your mission is to venture through a foreign garden as a patrol. Your role is
very simple, yet very vital for our final phase of development of our antidote
for the deadly virus that has purged our lands. The cure to this epidemic lies
in your hands. Firstly, you must explore the
region around us, marked out on your maps as “Tree Trail”. In this region, you
will be locating trees and executing different tasks as instructed by us. These
trees contain the raw materials which you will need for the final antidote. We
will be notifying each patrol of their task via a Y4 through their smartphones.
The patrol that manages to finish all 10 tasks first, can notify us and they
will get to choose the station which they want to attempt first. Do note that
each station can only take in up to 2 patrols at any point in time. For patrols
that cannot finish finding all 10 trees by the given time limit, the station
master will tell you your station number and you should proceed there promptly.
Every patrol will be given 45 minutes to finish finding all the trees. Do you
have any questions? If not, good luck, you’ll need it. But before you are given your
first task, you have to solve a puzzle. The patrol that finishes first, can
hand in to the ics and obtain the clue to their first tree.
Puzzle to solve:

Draw
a picture
For station 1, the patrol will be
tasked to draw a particular object in the botanical garden which is in sight.
They should draw specific objects and not the scenery. Two people will share a
A4 paper (Will be torn into A5 size) and each person will be given two colour
pencils randomly. They will not be allowed to use other stationary that they
brought with them.
Write
a Story
They will then be told to link
all their drawings together and create a story. The station master will pass
the patrol a piece of paper in which they have to jot down their story. The
patrol will take turns contributing to the story individually, starting with
the Patrol Leader and followed by the year 1s down the 集合 order. They are not allowed to
discuss with others when jotting down their part of the story and they have to
incorporate the object that they drew into the portion of the story. The patrol
will then present their story to the station masters and the station masters
will film it down.
Thoughts…
Surprisingly, we managed to piece together a rather
smooth flowing story quickly although none of the items were related to each
other. Overall, I felt that this station went well as we were efficient as well
as effective, and also helped the patrol members to build rapport between
ourselves.
Station Two
The patrols had to complete a
relay race!

Thoughts…
The hike, even though early in the morning, still
put us in high spirits as we trudged along Botanic Garden. Our first station,
after completing the tree trail portion, was to do a relay race as a patrol,
tying every alternate leg together and then proceeding to reach our destination
together. It was hard, as we could not coordinate our actions, and in the end
we took a suggestion from one of our patrol members to instead crawl on the
ground using our butts. Though it was crude, it definitely was a more effective
method and we managed to finish our task within the given time. Next, we all
took turns to run back and forth to the palm tree while balancing a tiny ball
on a plastic spoon. This proved to be no challenge as we were able to complete
at least two rounds for the patrol and we felt quite satisfied after this
station.

“Say
it” game
Starting from 集合 order,
the patrol leader will say an item from the category and the rest of the patrol
will tap their thighs with one hand, then with both hands, then point out their
left followed by right thumb together with the PL. After that, the next person
in line, will continue. Once, someone repeats an item or the tapping action
becomes un-synced, the patrol will be considered to have fail the task. For
every successful round, the patrol will be presented with one of the questions
below.

Thoughts…
As the Botanic Gardens is huge, we took a long time
getting to our station. Despite that fact, we still had lots of fun. We were
tasked to form a skipping rope out of rubber bands to fit as many patrol
members as possible. The "jumpers" have to jump at the same time for
at least 6 times to ensure it is valid. The patrol (p5 vs p6) with the most
number of patrol members skipping using the skipping rope made out of rubber
bands wins. However, it was not easy to get the rubber bands as we had to play
a mini game beforehand which our patrol took some time with, causing the other
patrol (p5) to catch up with us. We could have been faster and more alert.
However, the games were enjoyable and all of us had fun!
Iconic Trail
Along
the way the patrols had to spot these icons and take a picture with it!
Mass Station
For
the mass station, the patrols played “老鹰捉小鸡” whereby everyone had “flags” attached to their
bag. The Patrol Leaders were at the front and had to rip off the flags from the
other patrols! They were given 1 minute to strategize and 10 minutes to attack!
Thoughts…
For mass station, many of us were excited as it
seemed very action-packed. We had hid our "flags" strategically and
rolled ourselves up into a spiral shape to protect the last person from getting
caught. Many of the patrols were eager to attack one another and soon it became
very fun as we had to defend ourselves against other patrol while we attack
them at the same time. We had to defend ourselves against many other patrol who
were coming in all directions, trying to rip the "flag" off our last
member. We tried to form alliances but it eventually broke apart and attacked
any vulnerable patrol seen. It was very exciting and we had a lot of fun
watching other patrols fend each other off and also defending ourselves against
other patrols. Eventually, even though we did not win, we managed to bond as a
patrol and stuck against one another to protect others, like a family.
In
the end, P6 won! After prize giving, patrols had a short patrol corner and it
was break off! We hope everyone enjoyed themselves!
