Skills Training, 7th July

Hello Guides!

On the 7th of July, we had our first ever 集合 session planned by the newly appointed Year 3 leadership batch!

Firstly, we had a brief skills training session with the Year 2s (Year 1s being uninvolved due to a mandatory paper they had to take). The Year 2s were tested on their square lashes, diagonal lashes and tripods, after which a debrief would be held by their respective Year 3s.

Reflection from a Year 2,,
The skills training activity was very beneficial for me as I was able to realise what went wrong when I was tying my lashes. I was also able to know the lashes that I was competent at and the ones I needed to improve on. I realised that I had to tie my lashes faster as we kept 过时-ing. But this also helped us to improve as a batch as we learnt to ask for time extensions when we saw that our batchmates were not done tying. We would also help others after we were done tying our lashes. Overall, I think that this activity was very helpful for us in tying lashes.

After which, we had a goal setting session, during which the Year 2s listed out their goals and what they hoped to achieve in subsequent 集合s.

After the Year 1s arrived, both batches mass changed into their PT kit for the PT stations. They were then split into their respective batches and then further divided into groups among each batch. Both batches would be at different stations at any point in time.

For Station 1, they were taught high-low planking, and practised 站马, lunges, Buddha claps, burpees and crabwalk. One representative from each group would 集合 to the Station Masters and answer a question every 2 minutes. The Guide who gets the question correct first would run two rounds around the perimeter of the corridor while the other representatives plank for 45 seconds before returning to their group.

Questions:
  1. What is the importance of shelter? (list two)
Protection from natural elements, protection from wild animals, personal privacy

  1. What is the sequence to fill the filter column?
Charcoal, fine sand, coarse sand and pebbles

  1. What does WAGGGS stand for?
World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts

  1. What is the elevation sling used for? (name 2)
Collar bone fracture, houlder dislocation, finger injury, arm and rib fracture

  1. What does this trekking sign mean?
Beware of dogs

  1. What is the center of gravity?
V

Reflection from a Year 2,,
For the batch activity, the batch was required to go through a series of different PT. While tiring, I feel that the training served to improve our stamina and physical strength, which would help us in future activities and camps. However, I think that there is still a lot to be improved on, such as ensuring that the PT we do is more standard and that we take our penalties more seriously. I also feel that we should adhere more to the time limits set so as to complete the necessary tasks at hand, which could have been made better if we had 报时-ed more. Not only that, we should also take care of our batchmates more and that everyone is fit enough to continue the PT, especially when some people are unable to catch up with the speed of others. I believe that by keeping this in mind, we would be able to improve during other batch activities.

For Station 2, the Guides would carry out circuits repeatedly for 20 minutes, with the number of circuits being decided by the batch themselves. The circuit consists of 1 minute planking, 20 jumping jacks, 10 burpees and 20 squats.

Reflection from a Year 1,,
During the batch PT at Block G Level 5, we were supposed to set a target of the number of circuits that we would like to complete in 20 minutes. We set a target to complete 4 circuits and thankfully, we managed to achieve our target. Although the batch PT was tiring, we learnt that target setting is essential as without a goal, it would be meaningless doing the batch PT. I feel that this PT has also bonded us (the Year Ones) as we learnt to take care of one another by asking each other if we were feeling okay after each circuit. I also learnt to slow down and wait for my batchmates while doing the different exercises as not all of them are as physically capable as the rest.

After the PT Stations, the Year 1s and 2s mass changed back into their PE attire, before we started the next activity, which was Company Games.

The patrols will need to go around the given locations to look for post-its. On these post-its, challenges and riddles will be written and patrols have to answer these riddles by writing on the paper or complete the challenge and take a video/picture of it. Only after they have done the following will they be allowed to keep the post-it. For some post-its, they have to do something in front of the company hence they will keep it and only do the task after 集合, otherwise the points will not be counted. Each post-it will have a number on it which represents how many points this challenge/riddle carries. The patrol with the highest number of points will win and the two patrols with the least number of points will do a forfeit after 集合. The forfeit will be decided by the rest of the patrols.

After the Games, we 集合-ed and debriefs were given, followed by the announcement of the winning patrol and the patrol forfeits.
Reflection from a Year 2,,
I think the 团 games were the most fun thing we did during the whole 集合. It was really fun to run around, finding the post-it notes also because it gave us a chance to bond with our new patrol and the new seniors. I enjoyed doing the activities on the post-its as well because it was really creative and funny to solve the riddle and complete the task. My patrol found the post-it that had the task to send a message to someone using actions with the person standing far away. I found that task particularly fun because we all laughed a lot while trying to communicate through our actions and I think it allowed us to bond much more! However, after a while of playing the game we still had quite a lot of time left, yet we couldn't find any more post-its so that was the only sad part :( I hope we will have more games like this that allows us to bond even more with our patrol and the whole 团. I really enjoyed it 😊
And that concludes our first 集合 :D Hope y’all had fun!
