During today’s 集合, we had mass change, built a Kitchen Table for pioneering and an Emergency Shelter and a Flagpole for gadgeting!
Mass Change
This is the Year 1s first time having mass change! Hence, this is a good chance for the Year 2s to teach them on how to mass change into their 全制. At the same time, the Year 2s also practice on improving their sense of urgency during this mass change.
Reflection from a Year 1
It was our first time doing mass change in Girl Guides. Mass change required all of us to increase our sense of urgency as we were rushed to change from our PE attires to our 制服. Although we didn’t do very well on our first try, we improved on the second one. This also helped our patrol to get closer as the seniors helped us with our 制服 and we’re very thankful for that. It also helped us become more familiar with our 制服 and how to wear it. I think we could have done better by being more aware of the time given and worked faster. Overall, mass change has taught me to have a better sense of urgency and also allowed me to bond with my patrolmates. Hence, I think this activity was both fulfilling and enriching.
Reflection from a Year 2
During this 集合, we had mass change. For the Year 2s, we had not done it in a very long while and it was the Year 1s first mass change. When we changed from PE attire to 全制, we took a really long time and 过时 by a lot. There was a lot of room for improvements. We did not really have a sense of urgency, especially when going up the stairs. We could have had better time management and worked faster. As Year 2s, we should have ensured that the Year 1s 全制 were up to standard. However, one good thing was that our patrol constantly helped and looked out for one another regardless of the situation. When changing back to PE attire from 全制, everyone changed much faster. The process was more organised. Time extension was also asked on time. We will definitely do our best the next time round and have a better sense of urgency.
Pioneering
This was the Year 1s first time trying out pioneering. This activity of building a Kitchen Table would allow them to learn about the basics of pioneering as well as to tie the standard structure. It serves as a revision for the Year 2s as well.
Reflection from a Year 1
It was our first time using spars to build a Kitchen Table. During pioneering, we got to use our lashes that we had learnt and we also learnt how to build a kitchen table with the help of our seniors. When building our kitchen table, we learnt to have better teamwork and communication among the patrol to ensure quick and smooth building of the structure. We helped each other to carry the spars from one place to another as they were heavy. We also learnt how to have better time management as we did not manage to complete the structure in the given time. However, we still got to learn from our mistakes like not measuring the breadth of the table before securing the tripod. All in all, we all had fun and bonded with one another during this activity while learning something new.
Reflection from a Year 2
During this pioneering session, we managed to recap on how to build the Kitchen Table such as what are the different 木 and logistics required. As we did not have a physical 集合 in such a long time, we also managed to recap on our basic lashes such as the square lash and the tripod. This was also a good opportunity for us to guide our Year 1s by teaching them the basic lashes and introducing the Kitchen Table structure to them. In addition, this pioneering activity has also trained our sense of urgency as we had to work fast and efficiently in order to complete our structure. Hence, it is also essential to constantly 报时 and cheer to keep track of time and boost our morale such that we are more motivated to complete the structure together.
Gadgeting
It has been a long time since the Year 1s and Year 2s did gadgeting. Hence, this would be a good opportunity for them to revise their lashes by building an Emergency Shelter and a Flagpole.
Reflection from a Year 1
For gadgeting, I think I could have done better in multiple areas. Firstly, when we were building the Flagpole and Emergency Shelter, I think that I could have had a better sense of urgency when we were setting the Flagpole up. This is because I feel that I could have moved faster and done things more efficiently. Secondly, I feel that I could have 报时 more often so that we could have had a better gauge of the time left and there would be a better estimate of what would be needed to be done, such that it would be complete. However, that being said, I did learn how to set up the Flagpole and Emergency Shelter and also learnt how to tie the respective knots to secure the structures.
Reflection from a Year 2
As a year 2, I realised that I still was not sure on how to build a Flagpole so I did not know how to start or what to ask the Year 1s to help with, having been put in charge of building the Flagpole instead of the emergency shelter. Fortunately, I had the help of my Year 3 seniors and I soon understood how the structure should be built. However, not knowing how to build the structure took up a lot of our time which led to us not being able to complete the structure on time. I learnt from this gadgeting session that I need to make sure I know how to build the standard structures in order to save time and lead my Year 1s well. I also learnt that I should have a greater sense of urgency and take note of the necessary points in building a Flagpole. Overall, this gadgeting session was really a mind opening and enriching one.
