Skills Training, 5 February 2021

Hello Guides!

For this week’s 集合, we had batch activity! The Year 2s had Inspection, Gadgeting, a Game as well as a Goal Setting activity. On the other hand, the Year 3s had a Camp Development Lecture and did Pioneering. This is to allow the Year 2s to become more bonded with one another and train their Guides skills before the new batch of Year 1s come. As for the Year 3s, it is to hone their leadership skills and allow them to have better communication with each other.

Year 2 Batch Activity

Overall storyline for Year 2s:

财神到我家大门口,七个隆冬锵咚锵!Hi Y2s, welcome to your batch activity 集合. Chinese New Year is about being with your family, cherishing the things around you and being grateful for your experiences. Cherish the time spent in Guides and the fun memories with the 团. Remember what you have learnt throughout your journey thus far, taught by your seniors, as you venture on into the new year.

Inspection

咚咚咚锵,咚咚咚锵,小朋友们, 小队箱大扫除了!For a head start to the new year, you have been tasked by your ancestors to spring clean your 配备s, in order to check what belongings you have. 正所谓:“旧的不去,新的不来” You will need to inspect your logistics very carefully while doing the inspection. Actions speak louder than words, put what you all have learnt into good use and your efforts will bear fruit.

Reflection from a Year 2

Friday’s 集合 was the first time we did inspection without our seniors' help. I think the first thing that went wrong was when we were collecting the logistics needed as we took tent pegs instead of the 青头s. During our first inspection, we did not take care of our belongings and manpower well as a lot of our manpower got kapped, including our ICs. I think the problem that I faced, as I believe others might, was that we did not really realise the importance of them and had “tunnel” vision when we were busy laying out our logistics, that when we realised they were being taken away, it was too late. Furthermore, the layout was disorganised at the start as the excess poncho was awkwardly placed and the 麻绳 was all over the place. However, with each inspection, the kapped logistics and manpower did decrease and we were able to stick to the timings better, with a better sense of situational awareness and urgency. Overall, I felt that we did quite well for this inspection. The main takeaway that I have is that with the new Year 1s coming in soon, it is of more importance to 照顾好人 as they are new to the CCA and we should place more importance on this.

Gadgeting

Just as you were about to take a break after doing your spring cleaning, your doorbell rang. You opened the door to see three Thai cows at your doorstep and it suddenly reminded you of a 成语, 三牛开泰. Inspiration struck you like a three-pound sledgehammer as you felt three is such a magical and beautiful number. So, you thought, why not you build a structure involving a tripod! This will be a great opportunity to brush up on your lashes, a chance to unleash your creativity and unlock your full potential! Out of a sudden, 2 magical fairies flew by and they dropped the magical scroll of the drawing of tripod-like structures onto you! The sacred drawings passed down by our ancestors for centuries! How amazing! Do your best to live up to their expectations with the skills you have gained the past year, and tie these structures!

Reflection from a Year 2

For the Gadgeting activity, we had to take logistics from the 团部. However, as some Year 2s forgot to collect some logistics, we had to postpone the activity and do another one first. There were ICs of each group who stepped up and told us how to build the structures that would be used later for a game. The other groups had to build different structures from our groups’. Our structure was a tripod with a different kind of netting from the standard ones we do as we had to make it look like a fish. We thought it was really cute and that the game we played afterwards incorporating all of the group's structures was interesting since we had never played it before. As we were split into three different groups for this 集合, we enjoyed bonding with the other patrols as we do not get much of a chance to bond with our batch besides our patrol. We hope that we can continue doing such 集合 with the rest of the Year 2s, and improve our lashes at the same time.

Game

As Chinese New Year draws nearer, you start preparing for your reunion dinner. In the midst of it all, you are shocked to realise that the ingredients you have bought aren't enough! With the structures you have tied, go fishing for a main dish to awe your relatives. 年年有余, fish for good luck and may your year be prosperous!

The instructions for the game is as follows:

The game will be fused with Creative Gadgeting. There will be 2 groups playing at one time and the other group will have a water break, then they will take turns playing. There are a total of 6 rounds, each round will last for 4 minutes. Scores will be tabulated and do your best unless you want to risk getting the forfeit! The defending team will place the structure at a spot(show them which spot) and stand away from it, back facing the offending team. The offending team will stand further away from the defending team and ask “Baden, Baden, how fast can your square lash be?”, the offending team will reply with a certain number of minutes and the defending team will walk steps of the same value. Eg. 2 minutes, 2 steps. The defending team will have to try to hook the defending team’s structure away using the offending team’s structure and hold it in their hands to win. The defending team will have to predict if the offending team is near the structure purely based on their hearing and if they turn around when the offending team is within 1 metre away from the structure, they will win. The game ends only when 4 minutes is up.

Reflection from a Year 2

I had a great time playing the fishing game on Friday’s 集合 and I felt that it allowed me to bond more with the people in other patrols and got to know knew people from other patrols. I feel that the game was a fun and creative way to let us work more on working together with others and at the same time having a sense of urgency as there was a time limit too. It also made us think how to strategize our moves and use the things we learnt in guides. For example, when the other two groups were playing the game, we decided to measure the distance between the starting point and the cone using pacings to know how many steps to give to the opposing group when it is our turn to play. I really enjoyed the game and hope that we can have similar activities in future 集合s.

Goal Setting

鼠年 was a year of procrastination and boredom for you. You decide that for 牛年, you will 费九牛二虎之力 to make the best out of it, hence you decided to have your Chinese New Year resolution. This is a time for the Year 2s to set goals for themselves to see which areas they can improve on as well.

Reflection from a Year 2

One of our goals for this year is to be able to take the initiative to step up more for instance during inspection when there is no one appointed to be in-charge. We also hope to be approachable and friendly seniors for the Year 1s alongside teaching them all the hard and soft skills, lashes and basic 礼节 etc. We will also take our seniors’ feedback into consideration and think of it as a learning point and improve on our mistakes. One example would be the inspection for this week’s 集合. Based on comments by the Year 4s, we want to be more decisive and look at the bigger picture before planning to start building anything. Even though the most recent Annual Training Camp was a smaller scale one held in school, we want to maintain and improve the standard to make our seniors proud. Lastly, we also hope to have a closer bond with the Year 3s and warmly welcome the new year ones into Guides.

Year 3 Batch Activity

Camp Development Lecture

This would be a great opportunity for the Year 3s to craft their own proposals and plan their own timeline which is a crucial skill for PLTC and 领导层. Through this lecture, they will get to understand our expectations and criteria for their proposals, and receive information on what to plan for their future 集合.

Reflection from a Year 3

The Camp Development Lecture helped us to gain an in depth understanding of our task requirements on Camp Development. Besides providing us with information such as the dates and time allocated for Camp Development, we also managed to learn new skills such as how to do a proper and neat proposal for submission. These are definitely applicable and cardinal skills we will need as we go along the way to do proposals. We learnt important things to note when doing proposals such as standardisation, the contents that needs to be included, for example, timeline, logistics list. These would help us to gain some new knowledge on proposal writing before we start working on our proposals. We have also seen some good and bad examples of the structure drawing. It helped us to better easily understand the requirements of structure drawing such as the need to include a title, logistics list and the need to colour the 木s we draw for easier reference. This was an important lecture to aid us in our proposals writing for the upcoming Camp Development Activity.

Pioneering (Kitchen Shelter)

This is to ensure that the Year 3s are familiar with how to build a Kitchen Shelter as it would be built during PLTC. This is a good time to train them to be more proactive and step up to lead their batch.

Reflection from a Year 3

Being completely honest with our performance, it was very disappointing as many of us were still unfamiliar with the steps and precautions to take when building the Kitchen Shelter. We forgot to measure the length of the 木, which is unacceptable, given that our PLTC is round the corner. Firstly, we tied the square lash too loosely and had to redo the lash. This amount of time could have been saved should we have done it properly the first time. After we 起 the structure, we took too long to do the pacing and lacked a sense of urgency. Some of us were also unsure of how to tie main guylines. We had to be prompt multiple times to step up to see the bigger picture and we were inconsistent when it comes to 报时.  Overall, our batch has to take note of our mistakes and learn from them and revise on and familiarise ourselves with the standard structures.

We hope everyone had fun during batch activity this 集合 and became more bonded with your batchmates!
