Hi guides :D

During today's jihe, the guides in deco were pulled out to do preparation for the upcoming UG campfire and the songleaders were also trained for one hour with the rest of the UG songleaders. The songleaders had been training even before chinese new year and they will continue to strive for the best and make the campfire a successful one. The combined UG campfire will be on 13th Feb, friday at the school hall.

After today's activity, the whole guides company had a reunion dinner at the school hostel to celebrate Chinese New Year and also to take this time to bond among patrols. We were glad to have our year5 seniors back with us for this reunion dinner and it would not be a success without the help of our guiders, our seniors as well as the hostel aunties and uncles. Here are some of the pictures taken.

Next week we will be having new year1s joining in thus we should give our greatest welcome and show them what guides really are.

Hello guides! (:

Today we had skills training and fun games, followed by an enjoyable dinner with our patrols (:

For the skills training, the sec2s and sec3s were split into 2 different groups. The sec2s trained on their lashes while the sec3s had PT.

Basically for PT, the sec4s felt that you all could have cheered more. As sec3s you all should know that cheering brings up your spirit. You all will not feel so tired too. Also, we felt that you all did not care for each other enough. If someones falls behind, inform those running ahead to slow down so that you all may run as a jie. (: Despite all these, we could see that some of you all pia-ed. :D good job! For the others, try harder! Jiayou. We hope that you all will take note of these things and improve on it the next time round! (:

During the PT, we also observed that the general standard for attire was rather low. Although there might not have been roll call, you all should take note of your attire in guides. We saw a number of ankle socks, coloured socks and even sport shoes. As sec3s, all the basic guidelines of attire should have been drilled into you, having gone through so many roll calls.

After the PT, we had patrol corner cum fun games. I saw that everyone was enjoying themselves. I had a lot of fun with my patrol doing the "Human Knot"! :D Everyone was so funny when they tried to untangle themselves.

Lastly, I hope the sec3s would remember what the sec4s told them and not commit the same mistakes and that everyone had fun during the games! :D

Hi guides!!

Last jihe, all of us participated in 2 sessions of activities, namely the traditional games and physical training.

Traditional games

Fireman's ladder:
Within 35 minutes, the year 2s and 3s had to tie a fireman's ladder and everyone to try out their structure at least once. Generally, most of the knots are not tight enough and the spars are not parallel to the ground even though measurements have been given. Moreover, we realise that most of the year 2s and 3s only use their hands and toes to support the structure, which is incorrect. To stabilise the structure, knees should also be touching the spars.

Sheng Qiao:
I believe everyone enjoyed this "checkpoint" very much as it is the first time the year 2s and 3s played with the sheng qiao. However, those supporting the structure should use more energy to pull the ying sheng or push the A-frame, so that the person doing the sheng qiao will not be touching the ground.

Physical Training

Generally, most of the patrols' spirit are quite low throughout the entire PT, because not everyone is cheering together. Year 2s and 3s should learn to take the initiative to start a cheer or song to boost the patrol's morale. However, we are glad to see some of the juniors persevering despite being exhausted. One for all and all for one. Physical training is all about pushing yourself to the limits. Giving up may seem to be the easy-way-out, but in fact it is even more torturous than pressing on as you are not only disappointing yourself , but your patrol mates as well.

Last but not least, wishing all guides a very very very HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Hello guides :D

Yesterday we jihe at our usual place in coytee/PE with slacks and belt. The eight patrols were divided into groups of 4 to complete 4 different checkpoints together. P1 and P7, P2 and P6, P3 and P5, P4 and P8.

For patrol 4 and 8, we went to our first station which was at the junior high classroom block. We had to search for answers to match with the set of questions the station master gave us while 2 of our patrol mates would have to be in boys style pumping position. Thus we have to be quick while searching for the answers which was hidden in plastic bags at 2 different levels. The next station was a PT checkpoint at the fitness corner. We had to zhan ma while one of us would have to complete a circuit which consists of crossing the monkey bar, hanging on the incline pull-up bar or to do 18 incline and then to crabwalk back to join the rest in zhan ma. When the station master wanted the next volunteer to do the circuit, no one volunteer themselves immediately. Everyone was in this together, it does not matter if which one of us went first thus we should have more initiative. The third checkpoint was the fireman's ladder. Our sec4s taught us on how we should tie the structure and everyone was to go through it at least once. For us, the sec2s, it was something new and interesting. Even though we were scared but with the patrol holding the structure for us and the sec4s helping us, some of us managed to overcome our fear. The forth checkpoint was the sheng qiao. It is a structure with 2 A-frame connected by a ying sheng. We had to use the back of our knee not ankle to hook onto the ying sheng and move across by swinging our legs and moving our hands.

Overall, today's jihe was the first time for some us to go through the traditional games. Although it was tough but I enjoyed myself.

Hi guides(:

Two weeks back on the 10th January, a few of us went to help out at the opening run of the Youth Olympics 2010. It was voluntary work by HQ and we had a chance to help out in a large-scale event. We were mainly the road marshals that directed the marathon runners and make sure the traffic flow was not disturbed by the race. It was a full day activity, which lasted for around 8 hours.

I would like to commend the guides that helped out, that even though the weather was really hot, their spirits were very high and we had fun interacting with each other, as well as other school's guides. I believe that this is the first time that we participated in such an activity and it was a whole new experience for us to have a taste of being a road marshall.

As we were mostly from different patrol, this event also helped us in bonding. We had a lot of free time in between, and we made good use of it to get to know each other better. It was a rare opportunity for the us Year 4s and 2s to spend time together talking.

A gentle reminder to all guides: as we are representing Dunman High Guides, please make the effort to have proper attire no matter what activities, whether in school or for HG voluntary.

Overall, I believe we all had fun throughout this event. We hope to help out in this type of event in the future!

Love guides(: jiayou for all upcoming activites!

Hi guides! (:

As mentioned in the previous post, yesterday we had our first normal jihe and skills training for the year. It started with roll call, followed by PT and gadgets tying. Basically the whole aim of that days jihe is to get their creative minds to work, improve tying skills, regain fitness after the long holiday break, and to bond as a batch.

All went well during roll call, just that some of us really need to remember the standard guides attire, and make sure we are in the right attire and not doing consequences for it again!

PT was in the form of Amazing Race, where the yr2s and 3s have to go to each level in rotation basis in the junior high block. In each level, they are required to do a series of exercises before finding puzzle pieces and proceed on with the race. Our whole idea of the race is to bring fun into PT yet benefit as much, rather than just the normal circuits that we usually do. However, we did meet some problems along the way, such as overestimation of the time, and puzzle pieces going missing. Nevertheless, hopefully both the yr2s&3s did benefit from the race, and had fun.

For yr2s, they have to tie a standard kitchen dresser or shoe+baggage rack within approx one hour. Most managed to complete for the shoe and baggage rack, and the kitchen dressers almost done. However, for the tying of tripod with dingjiaos, they were relatively slow. The important part is to get the main frame up as soon as possible. Also, have to remember to choose the correct gadget pole size for baggage rack. It should not be too high off the ground as it'll be unstable, but not too short as can only put a few bags. These are the areas to buck up in, so jiayou next time.

For yr3s, they were given one week to design a creative design in their combined patrols, and to be vetted by their various PLs. Similarly, they were given approx one hour to tie it. Initially it was rather slow, but in the end most completed most of what they intended to tie. Generally, the ideas were quite commendable as it was creative, although it is not really feasible for camps. It'll be good to improve on their designs now and to make it more feasible. This is an activity they had never done before, so I hope they learned much from this.

As for the whole jihe in general, this is one of the few rare times that we planned it such that the yr2s and 3s are doing separate stuff for almost the whole time, so we really hope that both batches did bond more together, and pia together for PT.

That's all, time for some pictures I took during yr3s gadgets tying.

jiayou for upcoming jihes! (:

Hi guides =D

Today's jihe started off with a roll call, the attire was getting worse as many of us had to do consequences for our attire, especially for wearing low socks. Thus, for the next jihe we should be in the proper guides standard attire.

After that, we changed to p.e attire and the sec 2s had skills training - gadget making while the sec 3s had pt which was in the form of an amazing race where we had to find puzzle pieces on each level around the corridors of the classroom block after completing a certain task. After PT, the sec 3s swoop with the sec2s. This skills training require us to come up with new gadgets which are usable and creative. Some other patrols even managed to come up with some creative gadgets such as the chair and MINI kitchen dresser but on the other hand, in terms of feasibility, the seniors thought that it was not so feasible. We had patrol corner after everyone was back.

In short, today's activities were interesting and different =)
Jiayou for future jihe

Hi guides!

Today was the CCA orientation for the year1s. There was a room for display of trophies and posters, another with Kim's Games and knots tying, the year1s could roast marshmallows and experienced outdoor cooking at the kitchen tent too. Year 2s were to bring the year1s around and introduce them to guides, hope you all made some new friends with the juniors today! Year4s were stationed at different stations to engage the year1s in the activities we had. Hope the year1s had fun and enjoyed their time here!
Good job to the firemen's ladder people and the bamboo dancers for the performance!
They spent much time practising to perfect their performances.
Thank you guiders and seniors for the guidance and advice. (:

To the juniors,
Remember to ask for time extension next time and hang your guides uniform at your xiaoduixiang and not leave it lying around anywhere. Keep tuanbu neat at all times too.

Let's look forward to new juniors joining dhscoy. :D

Hello Guides,
I am from gadgets and these past jihes we have been practising our knots and lashes, as well as competing with time. For the Year 3s, we have to take charge of our own gadget group, distributing manpower and giving instructions, while the Year 2s have a chance hone their skills. We got better with each practice and everyone is very coopearative in making this year's orientation a success!

Jiayou, everyone!

1 January 2009

Hi guides :D

Last tuesday we jihe in the new school for orientation preparation. After the briefing by the ICs, we were then separated into our own orientation group.

For fireman's ladder, we had to choose suitable mu to tie the structure so that it would suit us and make it easier for us to climb over instead of having long mu which might cause us to knock onto it and fall. The knots have to be tight or it will get loose easily and we will have to waste time trying to retie the knots. One of the difficulties that we faced was to ding the structure as not dinging the structure properly or exerting to much force would cause the structure to be unstable and our speed would be affected by it too. After lunch, the scouts joined in and we started practicing. We had to complete the whole performance within 35 seconds but we did not manage to reach that target thus only by practicing more and more, then we will be able to make it.

For those who are in the building of the gateway or kitchen shelter or tent, it must had been a fun experience learning new knots and a recap for them after such a long time of not tying knots.

Jia you for the next orientating prep and HAPPY NEW YEAR :D
