Hello Guides!! For today’s
集合, we had the long awaited Obstacle Journey (OJ)! This
was the first time the Y1s are experiencing OJ and it will be the first time
the Y2s are leading! The Y3s 集合-ed at
2:20 for an attire check and the Y1s and 2s 集合-ed at 2:30. After attire check, they were given 7
minutes to retrieve all the logistics they needed. Afterwards, they had 5
minutes to lay out all their logistics by the road and standardised them across
the 6 patrols. However, the inspection layout was not up to standard and they
had to pack up and re-layout. For the second time, it was much better.
Reflections from a year 2…
Initially we were flustered as it was the first time
that the Year 2s were leading OJ. However, things went rather smoothly as we
had placed the items for 配备 in a corner in the 小队箱 this morning. After that, we were told to layout our items for OJ at the
road along the GSL. This was rather intense because the notion of an inspection
really scared the year 2s and we were very nervous. Moreover, we didn't discuss
previously about the layout so there was poor communication and P1 & P2 had
different layouts from the rest of the 团. Hence, we were told to
redo the whole process and by the 2nd time, we had improved on our
shortcomings. After that, we were dismissed to our respective stations to start
on OJ.
After pack up, OJ
officially started.
Here is the overall storyline:
A series of natural disasters have befallen
on planet Earth. United Nations are gathering people from all around the globe
to form a special team in hopes of fighting this catastrophe, and you are the
chosen few. You must now embark on a mission through treacherous paths to
search for the antidote to put a stop to all the sufferings. But you must not
hesitate, for time is not on your side and any longer you wait, the death toll
only rises. Calamity is overtaking our world and you are the only ones that can
stop it. Do you have what it takes to save mankind?
Station 1(4S classroom): Gas Room cum First Aid
Storyline: Your
patrol mates have been trapped in a room while searching for the antidote.
Recent earth tremors have caused parts of the room to cave into itself and have
caused parts of the building to collapse onto your patrol mates, injuring them.
Furthermore, the tremors have ruptured the gas pipes in the building. To
prevent the hazardous gas from further spreading across the room, you will have
to solve the secret code to stop time which you will then be able to find out
your patrol mates’ injuries. Rescue your patrol mates to continue your quest!
Þ For this
station, only the Patrol Leader (PL) and Patrol Second (PS) could speak
Þ One Y1
and one Y2 were casualties in the gas room
Þ The
patrol had to solve two sets of guides’ code written on the white board and
afterwards carry out the respective first aid treatment accordingly
o
Casualty 1 would be an unconscious person with
dislocated shoulder and sprained ankle.
o
Casualty 2 would be a person who has an open
fracture on her right leg which is bleeding profusely leading to shock.
Þ While the
patrol treats the casualties, 1 person have to come out every 1 minute
(everyone have to go at least once) and answer a question to further test their
first aid knowledge. If they answer wrongly, they will have to do a forfeit of
10 crunches.
Reflections from a year 2…
We were informed that we were about to enter a gas
room, so we had to shake the door, cover their mouths and noses with their
scarves, and crouch down low while walking. Once we entered we also had to
immediately open all the windows, which we had failed to do so, and try to
solve the codes written on the white board as soon as possible. The codes would
give the answer to the two casualties' injuries, and under a limited amount of
time, we panicked as we knew we were running out of time and yet without much
progression. Furthermore, even when we had figured out their injuries, we were
unfamiliar with the first aid procedures and carried the casualty out of the
classroom by the wrong method. This already took a lot of time and by the time
she was transported outside safely, we began to panic again as we were unsure
of how to bandage the casualty's right shoulder fracture. Fortunately, some of
our other patrol mates helped us, and we managed to finish the first-aid within
the time limit. Even though we did not do very well for this first station, it
was still fun as we had a new experience of being leaders and learnt more. I
hope we have more chances like this to step up to lead our patrols!
Station 2(Block G level 3): Creative Gadgeting
Storyline: Oh no! An
acidic torrential downpour has been forecast to take place very soon! To make
matters worse, some of you have already been handicapped amidst the chaos. To
prevent the casualty rate from rising and to keep your logistics in good
working condition, you will have to think fast and act fast. You need to build
a structure which can elevate your 配备 as well as shelter at least 3 of your patrol members. At the
same time, intruders are closing in quick. To ward them off, you need a
catapult which can be used from inside your shelter.
Þ The
patrols were told who those that would be handicapped were. They could not use
their affected part. The handicaps will include:
- Injured right hand
- Injured left hand
- Poor vision (close eyes)
Þ The
patrol had to build an emergency shelter which is able to elevate and shelter
their 配备, and shelter at least 3 patrol members.
o
To prove the feasibility of their shelter, 3
members are to get under the shelter and elevate their 配备 under
the shelter as well. Water will then be poured from above.
Þ They will
also have to build a catapult which can be utilized from inside the shelter.
All these are to be completed in 12 minutes. This timing is inclusive of
proving the feasibility (or how much their structures meet the given
requirements) of their shelter and catapult.
o
To prove the feasibility of their catapult, at
least one member is to stay under the shelter and launch off 3 crushed paper
balls from their catapult.

Reflections from a year 2…
This
station was the hardest station of all in my opinion. We used the school bench
as the main frame and tied two 青木 to it to elevate our things. We built a catapult
separately using gadget poles, but then we realised it couldn’t fit inside the
bench, so we covered it with a poncho instead. However, our shelter could not
keep out the water completely as we did not cover all the gap. Everyone apart
from the PS and PL either couldn’t see or couldn’t use one hand and this proved
quite challenging and caused us to spend more time than usual on tying lashes.
We also 过时by about 4 minutes.
I think we could have worked faster as we spent quite a lot of time discussing
how to build the shelter. We should have tied the A架 of the catapult to the school bench, which was
solution in the proposal as it would have been more stable.
Station 3 (3D classroom): 夜里行军
Storyline: You have ended up at this barren land of darkness and hell. A
tornado at a speed of 110km/h is on its way, coming to destroy anything along
its path, which includes you people. Maneuver your way through the series of
fallen obstacles before you are dead and find the light source, solving the
mystery to stop this disaster. Time and tide waits for no man, escape before it
is too late! Work fast and Good Luck.
Þ For this station, the patrol is given 14 minutes to go
through 夜里行军, maneuvering themselves through
obstacles of tables and chairs set up in the classroom.
Þ The entire patrol will be blindfolded using their scarf
except the PL and PS, thus instructions will have to be passed down
efficiently.
Þ After getting through these obstacles, they are tasked to
answer riddles written on the whiteboard by finding a candle and match which
will be hidden and also solve a guide code.
Þ They will then use only a maximum of two matches to light the
candle in order to find the source of light. A penalty in deduction of marks
will be given if more than two matches are used.
Reflections from a year 2…
As it was our first station, we were determined to
do well and get a good head-start for the rest of the OJ. We first had to
navigate through a maze with only the PL and PS being able to see, and the rest
of the patrol was blindfolded. This gave the appointed PL and PS a chance to
train their leadership skills as only they were the ones who knew what was
going on. As for the rest of the patrol, we learnt to trust the PL and PS
as we could not see and needed to rely on their instructions to prevent
knocking into the obstacles. The process was relatively quick but there was a
lack of communication and a gap was left between the patrol. Even so, we still
managed to get through it and proceeded on to solve 2 riddles which led us
towards what we had to find to light up the room. We managed to solve both
riddles in a short amount of time but we took very long to find the items,
which was a candle, 2 matchsticks, and a matchbox. Due to the lack of sense of
urgency and not being observant enough, we had to resort to asking for a time
extension, in order to find the items and light them. Also, we were afraid that
we would not be able to accomplish the task as we were afraid that both matches
would be used and none would be left behind to light up the candle. All in all,
I think we did well in that station and this station improved our communication
skills between the year 1s and 2s, and helped the year 2s practice and enhance
our leadership skills.
Station 4 (PLTC’09 Campsite): Trekking signs
Storyline: The toxic gas in the atmosphere
has weakened one of your patrol mate, taking away her ability to walk. Before
you is a whole new stretch of unmapped barren lands where danger lurks in every
corner. It is fortunate that a team of rangers before have put up some trekking
signs to mark out the safest path. Hurry before it’s too late!
Þ The patrol had to build a structure to transport their patrol
mate with the spars provided within the time limit of 5 minutes. The patrol
mate will sit in the middle of the structure while the others support the
structure (the corners). The structure that they choose to build cannot be a
stretcher or a roman chariot. This forces them to think of their own idea,
instead of sticking to the original ‘suggested’ solution.
Þ The patrol will then be given 5 minutes to transport the
patrol mate, according to the trekking signs stuck onto the surrounding walls.
The patrol is supposed to find the correct and safe path by studying these
trekking signs.

Reflections from a year 2…
We built a square where on one side was rafted two
wood . We were instructed to transport our junior on our structure. She sat on
the rafted side of the square and her feet were placed on the wood opposite the
rafted side as she held on to the sides of the square structure for support. However,
on the way, we realised that the structure was too wide to go through the
gateway so we asked her to get down first while we tilted the structure to fit
through the gateway. After it made it through the gateway, we got her back onto
the structure. We followed the trekking signs along the way and though we were
not too sure of them, we managed to assemble at the correct place where we were
told to take the structure apart before leaving the station. At this station we
exceeded our time limit for the building of the structure and the patrol leader
only asked for a time extension after the time was up. From this we need to
improve on our time management. Overall our morale was pretty low so we hope
that during the future skills training and patrol activities we will cheer
more.
Station 5 (Bamboo Area near MRL): Survival Skills
Storyline:
As
your patrol embarks on the path to the antidote, you accidentally stumbled upon
a place where everything else is undisturbed from the disasters that is going
around. Your team decided to rest here for a while as everyone is hungry and
exhausted.
Þ The patrol
is required to build a shelter that can store all their logistics and at least
2 people. The shelter can be anything they want as long as it is feasible.
Þ They are
required to boil an egg using mess tins for their hungry patrol mates as all of
them have not eaten for a whole day.
Þ Every 3
minutes, a patrol member is to go out and answer survival skills questions. For
every wrong answer, the patrol will owe the station masters 2 burpees, which
they will return during debrief.
Þ The
patrol will have 12 minutes in total to complete all the tasks.
Þ There
will also be a bear attack in the middle of the station to test their
preparedness.

Reflections from a year 2…
I was the PL for that station. Half of the patrol
were assigned to build an A架 and rest it against the
wall, while the other half were in charge with the boiling of the egg. While
the egg was cooking, we shifted our logistics under the shelter and shortly
after, we had to 集合. Although we were unable
to cook the egg, our shelter was feasible and we were also familiar with the
survival skills which we were tested on :)
Station 6 (Block G level 5): Mindsweeper
Storyline:
Welcome
to the island of fear! This whole place is filled with dangerous high voltage
filled fences that the master has placed to protect himself from the disasters
coming towards the island. You have trespassed, putting his island in danger of
the disasters and he is not happy at all. You are to navigate through this
island quickly by answering the questions he asked to be able to pass,
transporting your logistics in the right path as well, or will stand to face
dire consequences!
Þ One
patrol member will be crossing mindsweeper first while the rest of the patrol
members will be doing Physical Training in circuits.
Þ After one
person has crossed the mindsweeper, the next person would continue crossing. By
15 minutes, the patrol should have transported all their logistics over as
well.
Reflections from a year 1…
For station 6, we were required
to answer questions pertaining to Guiding and then cross the Mind Sweeper with
our logistics. We could have done better by being more familiarized with the
Guides notes as we were not really prepared with the information we needed to
know.
After OJ ended, the guides had their debrief by the respective station masters and also an overall debrief by the OJ I/Cs. Then it was the prize presentation! P3 Jasmine clinched first place! Congratulations!!
Reflections
from a year 1…
Today is our first OJ as a
company, and we found the whole experience quite refreshing and enjoyable. We
were glad that we worked well as a patrol, and that we were praised for having
good patrol morale :) However,
we felt that we could done better if we prepared ourselves more by being more
familiar with the Guides notes, especially our First Aid knowledge and other
skills like the Guides code and various survival skills. We should also 照顾好东西, so our logistics will not be “kupped”,
which we were advised to put out logistics nearer to us to ensure that it is
supervised and to enable better communication as well. We can also continue to
cheer as much, improve our sense of urgency and be sure to ask for
time extension before the time is up.
The
集合 ended after a short patrol corner! We hope
that through this OJ, the guides have learnt something new! The Y2s really
stepped up through this and we see a lot of potential in them! 加油！
