Patrol Activity, 31 July 2015

Hello Guides!! (: For this 集合 only the Year 1s and Year 3s were present because the Year 2s were busy preparing for their common test. (We wish them the best of luck!) We had an attire check at the start to ensure that all guides donned a standard attire. Afterwards, the Year 1s were given 12 minutes to retrieve their logistics from backstore and 团部. They were then given specific time limits to complete their lashes. The Year 3s guided the Year 1s along because they were mostly unfamiliar with spars. They did square lash, diagonal lash and tripod lash, whereby each lash was tried out twice.

For the next part of the activity, the Year 1s were given 50 minutes to build a bridge. P1, P5 and P6 built one bridge and P2, P3 and P4 worked on the same one separately. Because there wasn’t anyone leading, things got a little messy. Here is an account from a year one:

The pioneering activity was no doubt needed as we had not practised our lashes and knots for a long time. Us, the year ones, exceeded the time limit multiple times as we did not baoshi often enough to realize that we had to ask for a time extension. When we built a bridge-like structure with two tripods supporting with patrols 2 and 3, one huge takeaway at the end of the entire process was probably time management, urgency, and learning how to communicate with others across the batch and as well as with the seniors. We learnt that 报时-ing was not done merely because we were told to do so, but rather, to give us a sense of the time to judge if a time extension was needed. Next, communication was equally important as we had to ensure that for example, the perpendicular length from the knot to the bottom of the  was the same as the other tripod stand. Lastly, cheering was something that had to be improved on. Personally I feel that subconsciously cheering does indeed boost our morale to work more efficiently as there were encouragements. Although a few seniors did reprimand us as we were not working our best, at the end of it all they still helped us a lot not just in terms of lashes, knots etc, but rather giving us chances to improve in Pioneering along the way!

But at the end of the day, the Year 1s still managed to complete the bridge and we had some extra time to play with it and snap a few pictures!

After 拆掉, and returning of logistics, it was Physical Training(PT) time! This PT was done as a batch and so the Year 1s headed to Block G level 3 and the Year 3s, Block G level 4. We did circuits for 35 minutes. Here were the respective tasks.

Year 1s: Circuits consisting of 30 seconds planking, run 2 rounds around the block, 5 squats, 10 burpees, 2 minutes leg raise.

Year 3s: Circuits consisting of 45 seconds planking, run 3 rounds around the block, 10 squats, 15 burpees, 3 minutes leg raise.

Thoughts from a Year 3…

As this was the first PT we had as a batch since we stepped up, many of us were enthusiastic and the morale was high throughout with everyone trying their best to cheer as loudly as they can. Also, we are able to seize this opportunity as a chance to train our stamina.
All of us waited for each other when running around and we counted together when doing the PT. We also cheered the people beside us to make sure that everyone is fine and to motivate them to pia through.
In the end, we managed to achieve our targeted goal of completing 3 circuits. Even though this PT was tiring, all of us had fun through this activity, as it brought back memories of us being juniors and pia-ing together through an activity.
I think, we could have more batch activities in the future and this batch PT was certainly fulfilling.

Hope that everyone rests well after this 集合 and as for the Year 1s, hope you guys have learnt something new today! (:

Cheers,
Michelle, 47 Batch Secretary
