Skills Training, 14 August 2015

Hello Guides!! (: For this 集合, we welcome back the Y2s who had gone for their common test and also all the rest from the long SG50 weekend of celebrations! Today’s 集合 consisted of PA, which was focused on ATC structures and a short creative gadgeting session afterwards. The guides were supposed to imagine themselves in an in-camp situation and their aim was to build a creative gadget that was a meaningful improvement to the campsite. The gadget must be creative and practical at the same time. Below are the respective reflections from the various Y2 secretaries!

 P1 Bougainvillea: Tasha

For last Friday's 集合,the year 1s were absent as they were off preparing for Parent Child Day, and this gave us a shortage of manpower. However, starting by building a baggage rack, it had to be able to support our patrol 配备 and at the same time, we had to also successfully start a fire. Four people managed to complete it in the standard timing of 25 minutes, which was an improvement compared to our previous performances. Our next activity was to build a flag pole, an emergency shelter and a shoe rack simultaneously, given only 30 minutes to do it. Throughout the process, we were split up to build the structures, and I was assigned to the emergency shelter. Although we were supposed to build it in 3 minutes, we were unfamiliar with the procedure and ended up taking our time to think it through. We kept tying the wrong knots and did not 打进 the 青头 the correct way. It was a total failure as the knots securing the emergency shelter kept coming loose and fell apart every time we tried to erect the structure. Eventually, we had to move on to the shoe rack and leave the emergency shelter for later. The shoe rack was pretty simple as we had done it before in last year's ATC, and we completed it in 5 minutes. Overall, we were inefficient in sticking to the time limit given and had to ask for repeated time extensions before we actually finished everything. Next, the y1s returned, and we had more people to do the next activity - a short PT circuit and lashes skills. The whole patrol had to do PT consisting of 20 jumping jacks, 45 second of planking and 3 minutes of leg raise. At the same time, 3 people had to keep swapping out every 3 minutes to build two tripods with 顶角s included. Initially we were given only 10 minutes to complete it, but we messed up the sequence and had to restart, so in the end more time extensions were asked. By this time, we were asked to 集合 for a activity, which was to build a structure that was "creative and useful". We brought down all our supplies down from 团部, and as our patrol was the first to think of an idea, we managed to grab all the necessary . We decided on a simple house, the roof being a quadpod and the sides being ladders. We made the structure stable by adding two diagonals each at the top and the bottom. The house was meant to show how girl guides is like our second home, and despite all our imperfections, we were still able to come together as on and overcome all problems together. Our house turned out to be very crooked, but we still tried our best and at least this was fruitful. Due to the time constraint, we could not present our structure to the . This 集合 was tough and physically-straining, but I did learn a lot from it!

P2 Ixora: Wei Mei

This 集合’s focus was on ATC structures. First, we built the 8-men tent. The Year 1s had PTM preparation so it was just the three of us. It was pretty meaningful as all of us had forgotten how to build one. We were given thirty minutes but we took almost 45 minutes as we could notthe tent. The tent pegs kept coming out of the ground and sometimes we tied the 活结too low so there was not enough 白绳to . We also forgot that the fly sheet also needed to be attached to the tent peg and by the time we realised there was only 5 minutes left so we had to rush through. I think if we were familiar with the steps this would not have happened. It was a good learning experience for us though. On the bright side, our tent was upright and did not sag. We then built a baggage rack. I was the PL and it was quite stressful as I was the only one who could look at the proposal and the others had to rely on my instructions to build the baggage rack. It was sort of like revision as we had forgotten that the baggage rack was made up of two A- and not two tripods. The year ones came when we were half way through and I had to brief them on what to do. I think I was pretty vague as the year ones were confused as to what to do. So I need to work on giving clearer instructions. We also had to ask for 3 minutes time extension as when the original 35 minutes was up we still had to do the netting and attach the 中长木 to the tripods to make a hanger for the guides uniform. The tripods could have been tied at a lower positon as there was not enough space to place the 长木 in between and we had to square lash it to the tripod. Since there was extra time before we 集合at 5.15, we did patrol PT. We did jumping jacks, burpees, 2 rounds of lunges around GSL and 3 minutes 站马. Lunges was the most tiring. Although PT was not so hard, it had been quite a while since we did it so it seemed more tiring than it was. After that, the entire had to bring down all the gadget poles to the GSL and each patrol had to build a  creative gadget that was useful in a camp. Elaine suggested that we build a clothes line to hang all our things like towels. We 打进 four 中长 into the ground in the shape of a rectangle. We tied a 中木 to each shorter end of the rectangle. We tied another two 中长 to the 中木, which was meant to hang stuff. Then, we 打井 a 长木a short distance away from each shorter side of the rectangle and tied a poncho to it to cover the clothes line and make sure the things didn’t get wet. We used the 定脚 as a place to place the shoes.

P3 Jasmine: Jo-Anne

This week's 集合 was the first for us (the year 2s) after our common tests. For this week's 集合, we started off with Patrol Activity (PA) and then proceeded on to creative gadgets as a patrol. For PA, as the years 1s were not around for the first half due to Parent-Child Day and half of the year 2s were not present due to various reasons, the patrol consisted of 5 people (Including the year 3s). However, despite the size, we started off with a lashes test where we had to tie a square lash in under 3 minutes, a diagonal lash in under 3.5 minutes, and a tripod lash in under 5 minutes as a patrol within maximum 3 tries. As there were very little people in the patrol, we were not very serious and this led to relatively loose lashes. Next, we did some first aid practices. We had to treat 2 casualties in 10 minutes: one with a non-venomous snake bite and another with serious head bleeding, close-fracture left arm and shock and would die in 5 minutes. As we were unsure of some of the first-aid skills and the failure to prioritize the seriousness of the casualties, we ended up treating the less serious casualty first and the other casualty ended up dead. In addition, we had to boil drinkable water within 7 minutes and simultaneously, one person to answer questions regarding trekking signs and guides code. We successfully chose the correct water but had difficulty starting up the fire but in the end, when we managed to start the fire, it boiled very quickly due to the strong fire and we did it within the time limit. As for trekking signs and Guides Code, we fared well, obtaining a score of 6/7. When the year ones arrived, we carried on to the last station where we had to build 2 emergency shelters within 7 minutes and the only the Patrol Leader could see. But first, we had to decipher a given guides code and locate the correct location to build the emergency shelters which we could accomplish. However, when it came to build the emergency shelter, we were very slow as the sense of urgency was lacking and there was very little 报时. In the end, even after time extension, we were unable to finish build one emergency shelter. With that, it concluded PA. Following which, we brought all the gadget poles from 团部 down to GSL and conducted creative gadgets for 40 minutes. The theme was something meaningful to a campsite. We decided to build a gateway in the end. The end result was not as expected but it was still nice and creative and we enjoyed ourselves in the midst of building the gadget. In a nutshell, we had fun together during 集合 this week and learnt that not only do we have to keep up on our sense of urgency and constant 报时 and cheering, we had to learnt how to efficiently allocate manpower and tone our leadership skills.

P4 Orchid: Maisy

We assembled at the GSL at 2.45pm. From 2.45pm to 4.30pm, Patrol 4 Orchid had our patrol activity which was gadgeting. We built a baggage rack whereby Hsinyue was the Patrol Leader and Xinjie was the Patrol Second. We also built a creative gadget where our patrol Leader Chloe passed us a proposal to refer to. After building our gadget, we took it apart just as the Y1s arrived from their parent child day preparation which absented them from the patrol activities. We were then split up to do physical training. We assembled as a batch and were made to run one round around our block for every story we climbed which was a total of six stories , after which we ran down to level 2 for our physical training circuits. Each circuit comprised of 3 rounds around the block, 3 minutes of leg raise, 3 minutes of back stance otherwise known as 站马步, 15 jumping jacks and 10 burpees,  this circuit of which we repeated twice. After our physical training, we assembled together back into our patrols with the year ones and did more gadgeting. We were instructed to collect logistics from our company quarters and bring them back to the GSL where we were split up into our patrols for gadgeting. Patrol 4 Orchid did a table with a shelter. The 4 pillars which were the main frame of the structure was constructed with 4 black wood and the table was constructed with green wood and rafted with half bamboos as a surface. A groundsheet was tied onto the structure as the ceiling of the shelter. However, due to time constrain, Patrol 4 Orchid was unable to present our structure to the company and had to take it apart without presenting.

P5 Sunflower: Chen Wei

Last Friday, we 集合-ed at 2.45, before being dismissed to do our own patrol activity. After which, we followed Zi Xian's instructions to take materials for 3 Emergency Shelters, 1 Dome Tent, the Flag Kit and 1 8-men tent. After that, we were given 6 minutes to build 3 Emergency Shelters. We were unable to complete the emergency shelters, but we were able to gain knowledge on how to build emergency shelters. Zi Xian taught us to place the 中木 under the poncho before we 打进 the sides of the tent. After that, we were given around 50 minutes to build the dome tent and the 8 men tent, as well as the flag pole. We started with the flag pole first, and then followed by the dome tent. Finally, we built the 8-men tent. Throughout the building, we were unsure of the structures but the seniors guidance was helpful. After the patrol activity, we learnt much from our seniors of how to build the structures. At 5.15, we had a company activity of creative targeting. For our patrol, we built a structure for hanging clothes and placing items. First, we constructed 2 A-s, and then we built a star. Then, we 打进 5 中长木, and then we lifted the star to tie square lashes on each corner if the star. Finally, we netted the centre of the star and tied 定脚 for the structure. There was a great sense of accomplishment when we finished the structure. All in all, it was a fulfilling 集合 as we gathered a lot of knowledge about how to build emergency shelter, flag pole, dome tent and 8-men tent :)

P6 Morning Glory: Claire

For creative gadgeting, we build a structure to dry clothes on. However, we didn't have a clear idea of the structure we wanted to build when we took the logistics. In the end, the structure was quite simple and there was unfortunately not enough time to add more details to it. We could come up with a design more quickly so that we can build a more creative structure in the allocated time next time.

Hope all guides had a fruitful session today! (:

Cheers,
Michelle, 47 Batch Secretary
