Patrol Activity & Physical Training, 3 July 2015

Hello Guides! (:

This was the first 集合 after passing down and after the reshuffling of patrols so everyone was still trying to adapt to the changes. But that didn’t stop us from carrying out our activities! First, we had an attire check and afterwards we split into our individual patrols for Patrol Activity (PA). Here are the respective reflections done by the Year 2 secretaries of the patrol:

P1 Bougainvillea Reflections:

Today's 集合 was the first 集合 together with our new patrol, after the 大风吹. Firstly, we were given some time to go through all the lashes with the year ones, and clarify all their doubts. After which, the year threes checked each of the year ones lashes. Subsequently, we build a baggage rack and a creative gadget. It was also an experience for us, year twos, to lead the year ones on our own for the first time. We were rather slow and had no sense of urgency for this 集合. We still had not adapted to our new patrol, so the morale was quite low, and we only cheered once or twice. However, for the baggage rack, we successfully built it and it was quite stable! But throughout the process, we had to ask for many time extensions in order to finally finish it. For the creative gadgeting, we are required to build something related to our new patrol, P1 Bougainveilla. We decided to build two tripod with a heart in the middle. It turned out quite nicely done and we took our first patrol photo together! We learnt a lot from this first 集合 and we hope to learn more and have fun during the subsequent 集合s!

P2 Ixora Reflections:

We had two segments for PA. Firstly, we had station games. We were given pacings and had to locate our stations using orienteering. The games included things like guides code and other interesting activities.  Next, we had to build a gateway with the gadget poles provided. We were given 40 minutes, but I think we could have finished it faster as we were working really slowly. Sense of urgency could be improved, and we did not ask for time extension the first time we 过时, so that could be improved too. Our patrol morale was rather low too. To improve, we should cheer more often and cheer loudly.

Since this was our first 集合 together as P2 Ixora, it was rather awkward. I hope we can become more bonded as time passes. Our patrol lacked 默契 too :( Hopefully we'll be more comfortable with each other after a few more 集合s.

P3 Jasmine Reflections:

At the start of PA, we practiced our lashes and taught the year 1s their basic lashes as well. Next, we also did orienteering and we taught the year 1s how to use a compass. I feel that this was a good time for the year 2s to buck up on your lashes and also for us to teach the year 1s well. Also, not all the year 2s knew how to orienteer, which should not have been the case because we have already been in guides for quite a while now so we should know these basic skills, or we won’t be able to teach our juniors accurately. Next, we did creative gadgeting and we had to incorporate the lashes that we learnt just now. Beverly was the PL at the start and she told us to tie two tripods. We took a long time to get the tripod up and I feel that we should improve on that and have a better sense of urgency. After that, Megan was the PL. We then tied the 顶脚s for the tripod and connected the two tripods with two 中木s and netted it. Overall for this PA, we could have done better in terms of our speed and our lashes could have been tighter too. I hope that our patrol can be more bonded after a few more 集合s! J

P4 Orchid Reflections:

The first 集合 after the PDP was quite awkward as for me who did not went for PDP I do not really know the Year 3s and Year 1s. For the first part we did PA and we had to build an eight-man tent and 2 basha in 60 minutes. It was also the Year 2s first time leading the year 1s. I was one of the PS for the first part of the PA. We had little clue on how to build an eight-man tent and we requested help from the Year 3s. Although we finished building the 2 basha and the lashes were also quite tight, but we did not 报时 and cheer, we also did not move fast enough. We did not finish the eight- man tent in the end. For the next part of PA was to build a structure according to a proposal given. I was the PS for this part of PA. I was not really confident if I can give proper instructions and was a bit confused. We did not really have the sense of urgency in the beginning but we began to move faster towards the end. We also did not finish with the structure given in 40 minutes and asked for 6 minutes time extension. Similarly, we also did not 报时 and cheer that often.

P5 Sunflower Reflections:

Today was the first   with our new patrols, and P5 Sunflower had games, like 'Human Knot' in the first part of . We had to hold hands with each other then attempt to untangle ourselves afterwards. After we've succeeded the first time, the challenge was brought to a next level whereby we had to connect our hands through the handle of a pail of water as well. Although this was supposed to be tougher than the first challenge, it was surprisingly easier for most of us because we had acquired coordination in our team already. These games were fun and interactive, and definitely helped my patrol to bond together. After the games, we had to build a baggage rack. We took 2 长木, 2 中短木, 2中木 and 9中长木. For this gadgeting session, I was the PL and Xiao Tong was the PS, while the rest of the patrol was blindfolded. Indeed, I found it quite difficult to lead the patrol into completing the task. As the patrol was blindfolded, it was more difficult to tie the lashes, and many of them tied the lashes wrongly (e.g. overlap) or loosely. Moreover, the year ones were not familiar with lashes like the diagonal lash and netting, hence at a certain point in time I had many freeloaders, which was not a good thing. All in all, although this was a tough activity, I was glad that I put in my best effort, and it was definitely a fruitful experience for the patrol. Finally, the day ended with a comfortable patrol corner, where we got to know each other better. We talked about our feelings for the day while having refreshments like Banana Cake and 叉烧包. Even though I was very tired after  it was worth it because the first with P5 Sunflower was indeed a great experience for me.

P6 Morning Glory Reflections:

It was my first time interacting with my new patrol (P6 Morning Glory) and I was quite excited. For about the first 2 hours, we had PA. We knew that we were going to lead and were nervous. We even panicked about the logistics as we forgot how many to take for each mu. Afterwards, for about 30 minutes, we were given this time to teach our year 1s the basic lashes such as square lash, diagonal lash, tripod lash and a-架  lash before being even a test. During the test, the year 2s also had to take part. My square lash and diagonal lash was quite okay but for my tripod, it was very loose. I was disappointed in myself as I had expected it to be better after being in guides for about 1.5 years already. I have to practice my lashes at home more often now! Secondly, we had to build a kitchen dresser in 35 minutes.  The PL was our patrol QM (min shi) and the PS was ger hui. After tying the two tripods at the side, we realise that we did not take enough 黑  mu and was worried. Fortunately, we used another kind of mu and completed the structure. Although it was slightly shorter than the normal kitchen dresser, the seniors were glad that we managed to adapt quickly. I was quite pleased with our first 集 合 as a patrol together as we did not ask for any time extension but managed to complete the structure although our half bamboo were “kupped” .  Afterwards, we were suppose to build a dome tent but it was spoilt so we didn’t have a chance to and instead, had patrol corner.

After PA was over, we had Physical Training (PT) in which P1 was paired with P5, P2 with P3, and P4 and P6. There were three stations in total. The stations are as follows:

Station 1 - Run the Relay!
Location: Dry Weather: Block F Level 4
1.       The patrol will be doing a relay race around the level 4 corridor of classroom Block F.
2.       A balloon will be used as a baton and must be passed on to the next person before she can start her task. If the balloon touches the ground in the race, a penalty 5 seconds will be added to the overall relay timing. If the balloon burst along the race, a penalty 15 seconds will be added to the overall relay timing. (Overall penalty capped at 120 seconds)
3.       The patrol should complete the relay in the fastest time possible and avoid dropping/bursting the balloon. The faster the time taken for the relay and lesser penalties, the amount of Kallang wave pumpings the patrol will do after the relay will be lesser.
4.       The start point/end point will be near the toilets.
5.       While waiting for their turn or after they complete their task, they should be in 站马 position against a wall until the relay ends.
6.       The time taken for the relay should not exceed 5 minutes. If the relay is taking more than 5 minutes, the station masters will have to stop the relay.

1st task: 2 people will do wheelbarrow along the length of the classroom corridor.
2nd task: 1 person to commander crawl under 5 tables along the breadth of the classroom corridor.
3rd task: 2 people to do jump rope 10 times together.
(They will have to run up to level 6 to pass the balloon to the next person)
4th task: 2 people to run 1 round together by linking arms on level 6 before coming back down to level 5.
5th task: 1 person will piggyback another person along the length of the classroom corridor.
6th task: 2 people to do crab walk together along the breadth of the corridor (in front of lift).
7th task: 1 person to do 15 Jumping Jacks and the relay will end when the person reached the end point.
* 7 tasks in total per patrol*
*Depending on the number of people in the patrol, the number of people doing running around level 6, crab walk and jumping jacks will be adjusted accordingly.*

After they completed the relay, according to the clocked timing and added penalty timings, they will proceed to do Kallang wave pumpings.
For example, Clocked timing = 4:02, Penalty timings = 30 seconds, Total time = 4:32
Amount of Kallang wave pumpings to do per patrol: Half of the total time (231 in this case)
The patrol will be given a time limit of approximately 3 minutes (to be adjusted accordingly depending on how much time is left) to complete the given amount of Kallang wave pumpings.
The patrol should complete as many Kallang wave pumpings as possible within the time limit. The patrol will be asked to complete the remaining amount of the Kallang wave pumpings at their own time. (i.e During PA, PLs to take note)

Station 2 – Clover
Location: General Science Lab level 2

1.       One patrol will send out one representative each to go through the electric fence. The representatives will go one after another.
(For example: One representative from P3 followed by one representative from P4.)
2.       The representative will go through the electric fence to pick up a post it from the ground and return to the patrol.
3.       The representative will then read out and tell the rest of the patrol mates what PT item is written on the post-it.
4.       The patrol will then complete the PT that they had chosen.
5.       This will repeat until the time is up.

Physical trainings involved:
1.       10 pumpings
2.       10 burpees
3.       15 jumping jacks
4.       Run 1 round around zheng xin yuan
5.       Boys style pumping position 2 minutes

Station 3 - Pass It On!
Location: Block G Level 4

Part One: Pass that Pail!

1.       Everyone in a patrol is to lie into leg raise positions in one line. The objective is to pass an empty pail by only touching the hook around the patrol as many times as possible.

2.       Only the hook can be touched and not the pail itself, and no hands are allowed to touch the pail. Once the pail touches the floor, the number of times passed will decrease by one.

3.       The patrol will be told to 4 minutes and they have to 集合 before the time is up. The patrol will be asked for how the number of rounds they think they can complete.

4.       The activity starts when the song is played.

5.       When the song is paused, the patrol will have to stop passing the pail around and do a cheer. The song will only resume after they have finished doing their cheer.  The song will be paused roughly 5 times.

6.       Their aim is to complete as many rounds as possible.

Part Two: Pass that ring!

7.       Everyone in the patrol gets into girl’s style pumping position in one line, they will be given an ice cream stick each which they will have to hold in their hands.

8.       Key chain rings will be passed around by looping it through the ice cream sticks from one person to the other until the end of the line.

9.       Before a person receives the ice cream stick, she will have to pump once.

10.   After it has been passed to the last person, the last person has to bring it along with her and run one round around the corridors.

11.   When the person comes back, she will pass it along for the next round and the next last person will run the next round.

12.   The patrol will be told to 4 minutes and they have to 集合 before the time is up. The patrol will be asked for how the number of rounds they think they can complete.

13.   Their aim is to complete as many rounds as possible.

Reflection by a year 2…

I felt that this 集合’s PT was just right, it was neither too slack nor too vigorous. I also felt that it was a good opportunity to bond with our new patrol members through the 3 stations. For the first station, it was enjoyable but I think the instructions could be clearer since we were quite unsure of what to do at first. As for the second station, it was a fun one and I felt that through PT we could bond more. As for the 3rd station which I preferred most, the electric fence was fun yet the PT on the slips of paper as well as running up stairs then down again was good exercise. Overall, it was good exercise as many of us did not exercise in the holidays (like me) and having PT on the first 集合 will set the standard for the other upcoming 集合s! J

After PT ended, we had patrol corners at the GSL and the Guiders even gave us 叉烧包 and banana cake as a little treat! (We you Guiders!) This hence concludes the very first 集合 with the Year 3s as the 领导层!
Cheers,
Michelle
47th Batch Secretary
