Skills Training, 12th May

Heyyy fellow guides! On 12th May, we had skills training, which was essentially Orientation Journey (OJ). OJ is an activity meant to train the guides' skills and test their knowledge on the Guides notes, test their stamina, as well as to train the Year 3s' leadership skills.

Station 1:

For this station, most patrol members will have at least one disability. Assigned Patrol Leader and Patrol Second can only give instructions. Patrol Leader and Patrol Second will be given proposal to build a structure and they are both expected to lead while communicating with one another.  PLPS will be given 1 ½ to brainstorm while the other patrol members will be informed of their disabilities. After which, patrol will be given 18mins to complete the structure. As patrol members are disabled they would have to cover up each other's flaw this would promote teamwork.

Picture of structure:

At any random time, station master will ask PLPS to get three people out to lay out patrol logistics. One of the three people will be given a proposed layout. This provides more opportunities for patrol members rather than just the PLPS to lead and hone communication skills. PLPS will also have to consider who to layout logistics for inspection in order to maximise efficiency. Laying out of logistics will occur twice.

Picture of Layout:

Disabilities:
  • Blindfolded
  • Cannot tie and cannot talk (Can help to lead the blindfolded)
  • Two people hands tied together
  • Can only use one hand

Reflections from a Year 3...

For Station 1, we were tasked to build a seesaw with gadget poles, and we we were given a proposal detailing the structure and logistics. However, the twist was that only the PL and PS could refer to the proposal, and had to guide the others in building the structure. In addition, everyone in the patrol was handicapped, and the PL and PS could not touch the structure. I felt really nervous as it was the last 集合 with the Y4s and as the PL, I wanted to give my all in completing this station. It was especially difficult initially as I had wasted time by asking every individual about their specific disabilities. I had also asked a few people to tie a tripod at a really low position, failing to consider how this mistake would affect the structure later, as the seesaw swing did not really fit nicely into the tripod. I had also neglected the other people and did not realise that they could work on the seesaw swing concurrently. Thankfully, the PS reminded me of that and we quickly got to work. Also, I did not manage my time properly, which resulted in us asking for a time extension. Even then, we could not finish the seesaw. However, I felt that our patrol morale was relatively high as everyone cheered together and we 报时-ed constantly. In the middle of our activity, the station master called the PS out. It turned out that 3 people had to step out and complete an inspection layout, with reference to an inspection proposal that had been given out. We were thus shorthanded and I felt that I could have better managed the situation by assigning the non-working people to other tasks instead of stressing out. In the end, we did not manage to finish the seesaw but I felt gratified that everyone had tried their best for this station, which resulted in a relatively stable structure.

Station 2:

Introduction:
You have just encountered a building which will fully collapse in 15 minutes. Trapped inside the building are casualties whom you need to evacuate. The casualties can be found on level 5 and level 6 of this block. At the 6th minute, level 6 will collapse and any casualties who are still on level 6 will perish and level 6 along with marked out areas of level 5 will be off bounds. At the 11th minute, level 5 will collapse and any casualties who are still on level 5 will perish. Due to the varying severity of the casualties, some casualties will perish faster than others if not treated. At the 2nd minute, little Anne, who requires CPR without mouth to mouth, will perish. At the 4th minute, Casualty 4 will perish. At the 7th minute, Casualty 2 will perish. At the 12th minute, Casualty 1 will perish. At the 15th minute, Casualty 3 will perish. The injuries of the casualties can be found with the casualty. You will be required to transport the casualties down to level 4 to await the arrival of the ambulance using the correct transportation methods. Due to the nature of the injuries, all casualties’ treatment will only be complete once she has ‘boarded the ambulance’, which will arrive at level 4 every 3 minutes. Time is of the essence and we wish you the best of luck. If you have any questions, please raise them now, if not your time starts once I break you off. PX PX ALERT---BREAK OFF.

Activity Outline:
At the beginning of the activity, the Year 4s (some Year 2s if insufficient Y4s) will be pulled out to be casualties. Half of the casualties will be on the 5th level and the other half will be on the 6th level. The patrol will be told how much time they have to treat the casualties. Every casualty will have an ‘life line’ which when exceeded and left untreated, will translate to instant demise of casualty. At the 2nd minute, Little Anne will ‘expire’. At the 4th minute, Casualty 4 will ‘expire’.At the 7th minute, Casualty 2 ‘expires’.At the 12th minute, Casualty 3 ‘expires’ and at the 15th minute, Casualty 1 ‘expires’ which marks the end of the time given to them for the evacuation and rescue mission. They will also be told that at a certain time, the levels above will be ‘collapsed’ (off bounds) and all casualties on the levels will be considered perished. When level 6 ‘collapses’,level 6 and certain parts of level 5 ( marked out with rafia string)  will be inaccessible. When level 5 collapses, the entire level 5 will be off bounds. Since all the casualties will need to be sent to the hospital, the casualties will need to be transported down to the 4th level to await the arrival of the ‘ambulance’. The ‘ambulance’ will come every 3 minutes (ie 3rd,6th,9th,12th,15th minutes).Treatment is only complete when the casualty has ‘boarded the ambulance’.
Conclusion:
Scenario 1 (no casualties die)
Congratulations ,you have managed to escape the building before it collapsed and rescued all your patrol mates. We hope you have brushed up on your first aid and emergency response skills. All the best for the rest of your journey.
Scenario 2 (casualties die)
You have made it out of the building successfully. Unfortunately, you were unable to treat all your casualties and they have perished in this tragedy. We hope this has made you realise the responsibilities you play and the consequences that come with it. Hopefully, it has widened your knowledge on first aid and emergency response, however there is room for improvement to your responses. All the best for the rest of your journey!

Reflections from a Year 3...

Station two was the last station my patrol went to. We were tasked to rescue people trapped in a collapsed building on 2 separate floors. By certain timings, the floors will collapse and all survivors on that floor would perish. Similarly, patients would not make it if they were not attended to in a certain amount of time using the correct methods or if the ambulance which came periodically arrived later than the given timing the patient perished according to the card placed next to them to indicate the timings and how they were injured. We were also tasked to perform CPR on 'Little An', a prop to test if we knew how to perform CPR. Personally, although this station was the last one and everyone was tired, I was glad that our patrol managed to 'save' all but one. I particularly enjoyed this station the most as it truly taught us how it would be like in real-life situations, that time, together with teamwork and planning was of the essence. That even a millisecond could make or break a person. As this was the last OJ, it was kind of sentimental to many and I personally cherish all the activities planned for all of us as every detail of this OJ was well thought out.

Station 3:

The patrol will be required to run along the corridor with their logistics while the station masters will ask the patrol questions. In the event that the patrol is unable to answer, or is too focused on the current task, forfeits will be given. A standard set of PT will be given to all patrols and the forfeits will only add on to the amount of PT they have to do.

The activity consists of the listed events, which will be alternated until all questions are answered
  • 2min 站马 against the wall
  • 2 min maximum to run around the block
  • (Do all the above while carrying logistics)
  • Alternate the order

Questions:
1. Name 2 actions that should be taken if someone is hyperventilating.
  • When speaking to casualty, be firm but kind and reassuring.
  • Simultaneously, massage her hands and gradually get her to unclench them (if clenching fists).
2. Name the order of materials in a filter bottle (column) from the first to last put into the bottle 🌸
  • Charcoal
  • Fine Sand
  • Course Sand
  • Pebbles
3. Name 2 factors which explain the importance of water 🌸
  • Unclean water causes dysentery and other diseases
  • Insufficient water causes heat stroke
  • No water results in death
4. Name 3 uses of an elevation sling
  • Collarbone fracture
  • Shoulder dislocation
  • Finger injury
  • Arm and rib fracture
5. Name all actions that should be taken if someone has a sprain
  • Rest the injured part
  • Ice the injury to reduce swelling
  • Compress with thick layer or soft padding
  • Elevate and support the injured part to reduce flow of blood to injury, minimizing bruising to the area
6. Name the steps to finding a location with a compass when given the bearings
  • Place the compass flat on one’s palm, ensure that there are no iron, steel r magnetic objects around/ near the compass
  • Align the Orienting arrow/ Compass housing (red arrow in the rotating dial), Directional arrow (at the top of the compass) and the N of the Magnetic needle in 1 straight line
  • Turn the Rotating dial (with Degrees) to the bearing required, where the bearing no. aligns with the directional arrow
  • Align the N of the Magnetic needle with the Orienting arrow by turning one’s body with the compass
  • Walk in that direction with pacings
7. How should we look after our compasses?
  • Keep your compasses away from objects that deplete effectiveness
  • Avoid dropping or bumping the compass on hard surfaces.
  • Store a magnetic compass away from computers and other electrical devices that can generate magnetic fields. Exposure to magnetic fields can damage a compass.
  • Keep a magnetic compass away from heaters and do not store in a hot place such as a car. Heat can damage the inner workings of a magnetic compass, resulting in poor performance.

Reflections from a Year 3...

Station 3 was a physical training station, aimed at training our mental and physical stamina. We were required to run around the corridors for 15 mins. Every round we would get a question, and the next round would be for us to think about the question. Answering the questions wrongly resulted in forfeits in the form of pt such as burpees, jumping jacks and planking. I feel like this station was able to pull the patrol closer together as we would take turns to carry the heavier logistics. we had to also 等人 so as to ensure that no one would be left behind, thus improving our bonds and pulling us closer together as a patrol.

Station 4:

Storyline:
Your patrol have come across a crisis. When half of your patrol have crossed a bridge, the bridge collapse and the other half of your patrol is stuck on the other side. With the belief of leaving no man behind, you are determined to build a bridge together to reunite the patrol.

Instructions:
Welcome to Station 4! In order to complete this station, you are required to build a structure that can transport you from one end of this pillar to the other. Since there is a ditch that will lead you to your death, you will not be able to step beyond the boundaries but you can pass the logistics across. Though this may seem simple, there are some conditions that you will need to fulfill:
  • Structure has to be in a form of a bridge
  • The bridge cannot touch the ground
  • One person will have to cross the bridge together with 配备 after the bridge has been built
  • Structure has to have a railing for the person to hold on

We encourage you to use your imagination and more importantly, make use of your surroundings to build this structure. You have 2 mins to brainstorm your ideas, after which 18 mins will be given to build your bridge.

Suggested solution:

Reflections from a Year 3...

At Station 4, we were tasked to build a bridge in order to get from one pillar to the other. However, there were certain requirements that the bridge had to meet. Not only did the bridge have to have railings, no part of the bridge could touch the ground. This was rather hard to envision as we were unsure how to make sure the bridge would ‘float’ above the ground. Finally, we decided to build the bridge by making use of our surroundings and balanced the bridge by tying one end to the pillar and connecting them in the middle with another 木. However, we had no idea on how to connect the railings and in the end, we were out of time. From this experience,we realised that we must think about the consequences of our actions beforehand so as to ensure that we would not be faced with such problems in the future. We would also need to work faster so that we can complete our structure on time.

Station 5:

Description of Activity:
At the start of the station, one of the station masters will hide somewhere that is easy to find. The patrol is required to carry out a series of tasks, which will be obtaining drinkable water (making filter column), setting up signals, making a shelter(dome tent), building a catapult and prioritising the order in which they will be done. However, the logistics needed for the tasks will be hidden very well and only the hidden stationmaster knows their exact location. The hidden station master also knows some information that can help the patrol in making better choices, but she will choose to tell the Y1s or Y2s more frequently so that they can communicate it to their PLs/rest of the patrol. There will be a few post-it notes stuck on the walls with Guides Code on them. They will describe “characteristics” of that particular location to guide the patrol in choosing a suitable place to set up shelter.

Storyline:
You have infiltrated a small forest in the enemy’s territory. This place has been identified as the best place to plan an ambush and you need to set up signals so that your allies will know exactly where you are. However, your patrol is thirsty and you only have unclean water with you. You will also need to build a shelter to where you can rest to prepare for the difficult battles ahead. There are resources in the area you can use, but they are hard to find. Luckily, there has already been a Guide who has been sent to scout the area and located the resources. She is currently hidden in case enemies come by but will gladly help you. She has also left notes around the area describing characteristics of each location, but they are written in Guides code. You have only 20 minutes before enemies arrive and realise you are here, so you must quickly gather your allies for the ambush! Work fast!
/After 14 minutes/
Stationmaster giving instructions will tell one of the Y1s "Your enemies have been spotted nearby and will be here sooner than you thought! You need to build a catapult in order to fend them off!" If that Y1 does not tell her PL/rest of the patrol after 1 minute, try telling to other Y1s or prompt them to tell other patrol members

Suggested solution:
Like mentioned in the storyline, the most important thing is actually to signal your allies because the enemies are arriving soon. Build three signal fires in an equilateral triangle in an open space. However, the patrol will need an extra 原子炉 for the third fire. They can try to find it themselves but the easiest way is to find the stationmaster first and ask her. They should not try to solve the Guides code first as no one has mentioned that they have any useful information. After setting up the signals, they should filter the water then build shelter.

Filter column order: (order to be put in bottle) Cloth (tied to small opening with rubber band), Pebbles, Charcoal, Coarse sand, Fine sand

Suggested solution for catapult:

Reflections from a Year 3...

For Station 5, we had several components to complete. We were given a situation where we were stranded and had to gather clean water, set up shelters and start a signal fire. Firstly, we had to gather post-its from around the MRL to get clues on what we had to do in guides code. After that, my patrol split into two groups, one group had to build dome tents and filter the water while the other group had to start the signal fire. I was in the group which had to start the signal fire and it proved to be more difficult than I thought that it would be. We had much trouble starting the fire as it was slightly windy and the Year 1s did not have prior knowledge of how to light a fire. In the end, we were unable to sustain any of the fires. What could have been done was that one person teach the Year 1s how to light up a fire first while the others try to start the other two fires. Also, one more area of improvement was also our communication. As we lacked communication between the two patrols, one group had no knowledge of what the other group was doing and vice versa. Should we have had better communication, we would have been able to do better and help each other out when we knew that the other group needed it.

Station 6:

Layout of station:

Storyline:
Welcome. You have took the wrong turn and entered the arena full of zombies. Hence, to survive through this obstacle, you have to build a structure that can elevate all your belongings, and at the same time shelter yourselves from the storm using the resources given. However, the area you are at is prone to flood and flood waters are rising. The area that is dry and suitable for you to build your structure is shrinking. It is demarcated by squared area on the floor. Also, the same structure must protect yourselves from the zombies that will be roaming around the area. The structure must be able to block the zombies from reaching any one of you. The zombies will start to appear 3 minutes into the time given so prioritise your time wisely. Once caught and infected by a zombie, you will have to do a circuit of PT to prevent turning into one. You will be given 18 minutes.

Note: the patrols are only allowed to build 1 structure (the structure must be able to fulfill all the criterias given)

Circuit PT: 3min 站马, 15 dips against the bench, 20 jumping jacks

Suggested solution:
  • Build a camp boundary to ward off the zombies (seen as attached)
  • Elevate all logistics, as boundaries stimulate the four walls of the house

Suggested solution for Camp Boundary and Shelter:

Reflections from a Year 3...

We felt that this station really test on our creativity as we were not allowed to build typical structures that we would build in that situation. We were completely lost and could not think out of the box. Fortunately, we found logistics like bricks to help us and we build a rectangle structure with groundsheet attached at the top which is a structure similar to kitchen shelter. The station also enabled us to work under the pressure of time. We also had to learn to work with lesser man power, be more efficient and work faster to cover up for the people that got 'taken away by the zombies'. However, our structure was unable to support the 配备 as we did not raft and water was also able to enter from the top. Nevertheless, we have learnt many valuable lessons from this station.

Skills Training, 5th May

Hello fellow guides! On the 5th of May, we had skills training, where we tried out something rather different from our usual activities. We set up 6 stations, but this was unlike any typical Orientation Journey or Physical Training. It was a set of stations to target every patrol's needs, provide opportunities for patrol bonding, as well as to sharpen the juniors' skills. It was like a "mobile Patrol Activity". The purpose of this is so that all patrols and all Guides will be able to learn/ revise most hard skills with the PLs’ knowledge of the exact area of improvement needed for the patrol, learning can be focused and specially crafted for the respective patrols’ needs. Station masters are not needed as the respective Y4s in each patrol will be the ones teaching the Guides. Logistics at the stations will not be an issue as at any point in time a patrol will be at every station. Otherwise, it will only be a few minutes of unattended logistics which will be neatly kept at the stations during patrol movement.

Station 1: Flagpole and Dome Tent

At this station, the patrols will build a flagpole and a dome tent within the allocated time for each station.

For this station, our PL split us into 3 groups, with an equal number of Y1s, Y2s, Y3s and Y4s. We were first tasked with building a flagpole in 10 minutes. Unfortunately, we had to ask for a time extension due to the lack of practice in building a flagpole. At the same time, the Y1s also got to learn how to build a flagpole and hopefully they were more enlightened about the process. I felt that we could have cheered more to boost the patrol morale as the other Y3s were rather flustered, which probably resulted in our inability to complete our task within the time limit. There wasn’t much 报时 too, which also attributed to our poor time management. In the end, my group was the first to complete a decent flagpole so we proceeded on to the dome tent immediately after. The dome tent was relatively easy to construct thus it was no surprise when the Y1s jumped at the chance to help connect the poles and slot it into the black holes, while we explained the steps on how to build a dome tent to them, and the important aspects of it, like the zip of the flysheet being aligned to the tent door. We did not have much trouble while building the dome tent so we managed to finish it quickly. However, the challenge lay in the folding of the tent and flysheet. We weren’t really sure on how to fold the tent so we just followed our gut and compressed it with every fold, with the help of the Y4s. In the end, we successfully folded the tent correctly and placed it back into its bag. Overall, I learnt much from this station and many thanks to the Y4s for helping me along the way when I was unsure of many things.

Station 2: 8-men tent and emergency shelter

At this station, the patrols will build an 8-men tent and an emergency shelter within the allocated time for each station.

I found this station very useful as this was the first time we were building a 8-men tent. The seniors were rather patient a took us through the steps on how to build it. However, we were very slow and lacked a sense of urgency, causing us to 过时 repeatedly. In then end, our tent was not very stable and was sagging slightly as we had already 打进 the sides without finishing 抽-ing the guylines. Overall, we all learnt a very important skill and gained new experiences.

Station 3: Baggage Rack

At this station, the patrols will build a baggage rack within the allocated time for each station.

At Station 3, we were tasked to build a baggage rack. The seniors instructed us to do it step by step. This way, we could teach the year ones how to build a baggage rack and also revise our own skills. However, I felt that we could have a greater sense of urgency as we moved rather slowly. We could also 报时 and cheer more frequently so that we would work faster and have a better morale. All in all, I felt that the station was useful as we were able to relearn our skills and know the proper way to tie a baggage rack.

Station 4: Inspection

At this station, the patrols will have inspection within the allocated time for each station.

At Station 4, we had 3 rounds of inspection. In the beginning, when we arrived at the station as saw a pile of gadget poles and 2 配备s, it was very daunting and I think we all felt scared and nervous. As there were three rounds, each of the year 3s got a chance to step up and lead the patrol and I felt that it was a good opportunity to train us to not only step out of our comfort zone, but also learn to be more confident when leading juniors. Just like any other inspection, it was extremely hectic but I think that we managed to keep things in check as we were calm and knew what to do. Even though I felt that we took a little too long, seeing how we had to ask for time extensions, I think it was good practice for PLTC. All in all, I think we all learnt a lot from this station and it really was a good learning opportunity for both us and our juniors.

Station 5: Fire Altar

At this station, the patrols will build a fire altar within the allocated time for each station.

My patrol went to station 5, which was on the raised platform and we found logistics such as zinc plates, bricks and 木. We had to build the two different types of fire altars but we could only build one as there was no space to build the one that needed to 打进. I did not encounter much difficulty building the fire altar as it was a structure that was I already knew how to build from previous 集合s. Even though I already knew how to build both the fire altars, I found that this activity was very useful as it cleared any doubts we had about building fire altars and refresh our memories which is very important as it could be very dangerous if the fire altar was not build properly during OC. I feel that we should should have more of such activities to sharpen our gadgeting skills.

Station 6: First Aid, Orienteering, and Songs

At this station, the patrols will practice first aid and orienteering, as well as learn new guiding songs within the allocated time for each station.

For this station, we revised orienteering and learnt some new basic FA skills that were covered in the Guides Notes. I think this station was very useful as it taught us how to deal with splinters and heat injuries etc. Splinters are extremely common in Guides so it was very fitting that we would be able to treat it. Also, since Guides is mainly an outdoor CCA, it is extremely important that we learn how to properly treat heat injuries, but what was better was that we learnt how to prevent such injuries from happening in the first place. What was different about this station was that we were able to sit down and properly learn how the steps to treat these injuries instead of being under pressure or time limits which helped us to absorb the information better.

Hike, 29th April

Hello fellow guides! On the 29th of April, we had our annual hike, and it was an amazing experience to say the least. Here are some reflections from the juniors, as well as a summary on what we did during the enjoyable hours spent at the Chinese Garden!

This is the map of Chinese Garden with the location of the stations labelled on it :-)

Station 1: Re-Creating Drama

Instructions:
Clips of the drama will be shown to you all and you all will have to split up and reenact each scene. You will be given 3 minutes to plan out how the scenes will flow and who will be acting out which scene. You all can do your own parody of the scene and be creative but try to make the idea relevant to the original clip. 集合 back in 3 minutes.
***
You will now be given 15 minutes to film, be creative and express your feelings!:) 集合 back in 15 minutes.
***
You will now be given 5 minutes to review your video, enjoy your efforts and hard work. (patrol to review their video and the video to be sent to them by station masters) You will now be given 3 minutes water break.
***
This is the end of your station, hope you all had fun and a lot of laughter:) Good luck for the rest of your station.

Videos/clips to be shown:
Thoughts from a Year 3...

The station master gave us a few clips from Chinese dramas and said that we had to join all those scenes into one story. It was hard to catch the words they were speaking in chinese and so we had to take note of the subtitles. We had to relate the story to guides, and also speak in chinese, so it was tougher than we thought. Although we spent quite some time thinking of the storyline and how to join the scenes together, we managed to pull a great act that was funny and related to guides. My favorite part was the last scene where we had to imitate sun wu kong's dying scene in one of the chinese dramas, when he obtained something essential before he died, which we made into a fellow patrol mate who was dying after she obtained a time extension. It was funny as we met with many retakes and laughing. All in all, it was a very memorable station.

Station 2: Memory Bingo

Instructions:
You will be given 5 minutes to go around the garden of abundance and memorise the characteristics of each zodiac animal as much as you can.  集合 back in 5 minutes.
***
You will be given 2 bingo cards. You will then be split into 2 groups and  you will be given 5 minutes to write down the characteristics of each animal you all remember in the bingo cards however you like, but the characteristics written must have the corresponding zodiac animal written down too in the same boc. We will then give the characteristics of the zodiac animals in Guides code one at a time. Solve the Guides code and you will have to tick the characteristics that you have on the bingo cards if you all wrote it down. Finish 5 lines to complete a card. The game will end in 10 mins.

Thoughts from a Year 3...

This was one of the stations were the most funny moments happened. It was pretty hilarious as we actually ended up calling 鼠 as mouse and 鸡 as chicken. In the end, my group lost and we had to do a forfeit of the other group's choice. We had to stand in front of the rooster statue and act like a chicken for 20 seconds while being filmed. Although it was embarrassing, seeing the seniors goofing around made up for it. I feel that we bonded a lot as a patrol through these funny moments.

Station 3: Games

Instructions:
You will all have to draw a slip of paper from a box that contains the logistic you all will be using to play ping pong. You will then have to use the logistics you have to hit the ball against the wall and continue to see how many times you all can hit consecutively, once the ball drops, the next patrol member will try. Everyone gets 3 tries.  There can only be 2 people playing at any one point of time. Once everyone gets to try, 集合 back in 10 minutes. (Station master to take the average score of the patrol and make sure one patrol mate counts the score for each of the members playing)
***
You will now be given 5 minutes to play a game. So you will have to start by sitting on the floor, then one of you will have to stand and shout ‘1’, then 2 people have to stand at the same time and shout ‘2’ and so on and so forth. However, once one of the number of people standing at the same time either exceeds or does not amount to the number shouted out, you all will have to restart. You will have to play this game until the number of people standing equals to the number that is shouted out or until the time is up. Remember that the people standing cannot be next to each other for the first 5 rounds.

Forfeit:
  • 4 tries : 1 round of maboleh together with a visitor
  • 5 tries: 1 round of chek chek goleh
  • 6 tries: 1 round of father abraham
  • 7 tries: 1 round of ging gang goolie
  • 8 and more tries: 2 rounds of 团歌

Bonus: Since you all still have some extra time, you can create your own pose and take a picture of it as a patrol or use the pictures below as reference.
Picture 1:
Picture 2:
Picture 3:
Picture 4:

Thoughts from a Year 3...

Station three was the last station for our patrol. We were tasked to use instruments to hit ping pong balls against a wall at least 3 times each. The random instruments our patrol used were 2 tongs and 1 spatula. Beverly managed to hit the ping pong ball against the wall the most number of times. I guess this station was one of the most interesting as there was this chinese lady who seemed to be a tourist who joined in and played with us. We even took pictures together with her too. Personally, I enjoyed this station the most as I felt that this was a station which 'generated' the most amount of laughter and smiles for every member of the patrol.

Station 4: Know your Body Better

Instructions:
For this station, there are 2 parts to be completed.

Part 1 - I Say You Do
For the first part, it is called the “I Say You Do”. You will be split into 2 groups to conduct the activities together. Each group must have a well -mixed year 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s. You will be required to have a certain number of feet, hands or butts on the ground. For every round, you are provided with 30 seconds to react and decide on your formations. The difficulty level increases as time passes. Overall, you have 10 minutes for this part of the station.
20 Sets:
  1. 28 feet (varies: the number of people in the patrol x 2), 5 hands
  2. 24 feet, 2 hands
  3. 20 feet, 18 hands
  4. 19 feet, 20 hands
  5. 16 feet, 3 hands
  6. 18 feet, 1 butt
  7. 15 feet, 4 butts
  8. 17 feet, 6 butts
  9. 19 feet, 3 butts
  10. 14 feet, 10 hands
  11. 18 feet, 1 hand, 6 butts
  12. 12 feet, 2 hands, 10 butts

Part 2 - Three Two One Stop
For this part, you will form groups of 4-5 with wrists and ankles tied together. You are given 6 minutes to collect as many envelopes as possible. Each envelope contains a card that can be an opportunity or misfortune, or nothing at all. The opportunity cards will be useful in the mass station. But for the misfortune cards, you have to accomplish whatever tasks on it either in the mass station or at the last minute of the time given (which is after 5 minutes). The station master will constantly say “Three two one stop”. On the word “stop”, everyone is to stop whatever you are doing, remain in the last posture. If one person in your group moves a little, the entire group has to restart from the starting line.

10 envelopes along the way: 6 with nothing and 2 misfortune and 2 opportunity cards
  • Misfortune Card 1 - Take a photo with a living insect
  • Misfortune Card 2 - Say ten times rapidly: “Three big blobs of a black bug’s blood”
  • Opportunity Card 1 - Ask a year 4 to replace you in your task
  • Opportunity Card 2 - Skip the task

Thoughts from a Year 3...

We had expected this station to be a PT station of some sort, but it turned out to be much more fun. The station master split us into 2 groups and gave us criteria to fulfil every round, such as a certain number of certain body parts being able to touch the ground. It really required quick thinking and creativity and it was entertaining to see everyone in awkward positions while trying to fulfil the given criteria. Next, everyone had to tie either a leg or a wrist to another person in the same group with 白绳 and the whole group would have to walk around the courtyard and find the white envelopes containing either nothing or a misfortune. It was challenging initially as we were extremely uncoordinated and the 白绳 kept coming undone, but we eventually managed to collect all the envelopes. Then, we had a choice between doing the misfortune forfeits there and then, or after the mass relay race. We chose to do it there as we wanted to get them over and done with, while being able to bond with one another at the same time. One of the forfeits was to take a picture with a living insect. We had trouble finding an insect at first as most of the insects could fly and did not stay long enough for a picture. We managed to find an ant and successfully took the photo, completing our forfeit. Overall, this station was really enjoyable as our patrol got to spend more time together, while being connected with nature.

Station 5: Patrol Picnic

Instructions:

Part 1
As the name of the station suggests, you will be taking some refreshments in this station. But before that, you have to get the food and drinks yourself. Hence, there are two parts in this station. For the first part, you will play the “Three two one stop” game. There are 10 cups of drinks along the way. Some of you will not get the drinks. The entire patrol have to choose whether you want to share drinks with the person or take a misfortune card in order to get a cup of drinks. You can complete the tasks on the misfortune cards on the spot or during mass station later on. All of you have to start from the same line, to grab the cup of drink for yourself. When the station master says “Three two one stop”, nobody is allowed to move. If you move, you have to go back to the starting line and restart. Once you get your cup of drinks, go back and 集合 while waiting for the rest of your patrol members. You will have 5 minutes to get a drink for yourself.

Part 2
You have 5 minutes to eat, drink and rest.
Order of the snacks put onto the groundsheet: Potato chips, Want Want rice crackers, Seaweed, Biscuit stick, Oreo, Mamee Noodle Snack.
After they have finished, ask them the order of the snacks putting onto the groundsheet. 2 minutes is given to come out with the answer.

Thoughts from a Year 3...

At station 5, we had a patrol picnic. Overall, the station was fun and much more relaxing than the rest of the stations. At first, we had to climb up the pagoda as a patrol to collect our drinks but as there wasn't enough,we could either share the drinks among ourselves or do a forfeit. We chose to share the drinks and it was nice as sharing is caring and we were willing to share despite being thirsty. On the other hand, if we had chosen to do the forfeit, I think that it would have taught us to be more daring and step out of our comfort zone. The time spent eating together really helped us to be closer as a patrol as we do not usually have much time to sit down and talk during 集合s and I think the time spent together at station 5 was really treasured and appreciated.  All in all, although all we did was eat, drink and talk, I think we all really enjoyed the station.

Station 6: Our Times

Instructions:
This station consists of 2 parts. The first part is charade.
Part 1
For this part, you will be divided into 2 teams. Each team must have a well mix of different levels. For each team, a word or a line either in Chinese or English will be given to the first person while the rest of you will be facing backwards. The first person has to act out to let the second person see, so and so forth. Everyone is given 30 seconds to act out for the next person. At the end of 30 seconds, the next person has another 10 seconds to internalise what she has seen. If you are the last person, you will have to act out in front of everyone what you get from the previous teammate and guess the word or the sentence.  Take note that the acting person cannot speak at all. And after you are done with acting, you cannot hint the person who are guessing. Each team has 2 rounds for this part. All the words and lines are related to Guides.

At the start, you are to choose 3 slips of paper from the ziploc bag, each paper containing a Guides song. Your task is to sing our Guides song, only when the station master points at you or when the station master does the sign to signal everyone singing together. If one one person in your team fails to sing out at correct times, you have to restart again. In total, every team has 3 challenges which are the 3 songs you choose at the start. For each challenge, you only have 3 minutes to complete. At the end of the 3 minutes, you have to switch to the next challenge.

Songs to choose:

  • Guiding Light

Thoughts from a Year 3...

For station 6, the patrol was split into two teams and what we did was use certain objects to hit a ping pong ball against the wall. For my team, we had to use a spatula to hit the ping pong ball. I think that it was quite comical as we found it pretty difficult to use a spatula to hit the ping pong ball and the different ways we tried to hit the ball was also quite funny. Unfortunately, my group only managed to hit the ball against the wall 4 times while the other group managed to hit the ball 11 times! This station taught me how to adapt to different circumstances and to make use of what there is to make the best out of a situation. When we feel challenged or intimidated because we have never tried something before, we should just try and learn from the new experience.

Station 7: Relay Battle (Mass station)

Instructions:
At this mass station, you will have to complete a relay race. Everyone is going to participate. There are a total of 10 checkpoints along the way. The starting point is a checkpoint also. For the last checkpoint, there must be at least 2 players. But for the rest of the checkpoints, there can be 1 or 2 players. Players from every patrol has to complete the small tasks at the checkpoint before passing the baton over to the next runner. The finishing line is at the main gate of Chinese garden. By the time the last person in your patrol is going to finish, everyone has to be back at the main gate. While the participant from the patrol is completing her task, the rest of the patrol members who have completed their run will support her at the sides but cannot help.Time is the deciding factor in the race. The patrol using the least amount of time to finish the whole race will win the whole game. The attacking power (ice-creams) accumulated by each patrol helps by cutting the patrol’s overall time taken. You have to show the ICs - Xin Jie and Xiao Tong the number of ice-cream sticks you patrol possesses. Patrols with misfortune cards have to complete their tasks on the card at the finishing line. Please note that time to complete the tasks on the misfortune cards will also be counted. Patrols with opportunity cards are allowed to use each opportunity card once.

Checkpoints:
  1. (Starting line) Each player chooses one table tennis ball from the box. Each ball has a number on it, representing the number of rounds they have to turn on the spot. Numbers on the table tennis ball: 7,7,8,8,9,9. After that, they will run to the next runner to pass over.
  2. Skipping ropes (20 times)
  3. Bounce shuttle cock on the badminton racket 20 times continuously without dropping the ball
  4. Hop with one leg to the next checkpoint
  5. Keep the chapteh in the air for 5 times
  6. Give a one-minute talk about Chinese
  7. Walk around and give every guide you see a smile until they reply you with a smile
  8. Sing the chorus part of 3 kpop songs
  9. Win scissors paper stone against station master five times consecutively
  10. 3-legged race towards the finishing line with table tennis ball on the racket

With that, we concluded our annual hike! It was indeed a fun-filled day at the Chinese Garden, and every patrol undoubtedly bonded with each other to become even closer! For the Year 4s, it was our last hike, but it was definitely the most enjoyable :-)
