Skills Training + Combined Obstacle Journey, 13th April

Hi Guides!

This 集合 was slightly different as the Year 1s and 2s had their own activity, while the Year 3s had Combined Obstacle Journey (COJ) with the Year 3 Scouts in preparation for Patrol Leader Training Camp (PLTC).

The Year 1s and 2s had station activities that aimed to introduce Physical Training (PT) exercises to the Year 1s, allow the Year 1s and 2s to be familiarized with standard structures and for them to practise lashes, as well as to allow the Year 2s to step up and lead.

Year 1 and Year 2 Skills Training

Overall storyline:
You and your patrol mates find yourself stranded on an island, with no other resources. Thus, in order to survive, all of you would have to work together and complete a series of tasks. In the midst of completing them, you may face difficulties or there would be times where you feel lost, but always remember, you and your patrol members are going through the same thing and unity is the key to survival.

There were a total of 6 stations and one mass station to be completed. However, the locations would not be told to the Year 1s and 2s. Instead, each patrol was given a slip of paper with their starting station location written in Guides code. Upon completion of a station, they had to decode the next station’s location.

Station 1: 8-men Tent

Introduction:
Your patrol is currently in a forest, and the sky is darkening. You will need a tent to rest for the night and continue your journey the next morning.

The Year 1s and 2s had to build an 8-men tent in 15 minutes, which would allow the Year 1s to be exposed to it since they had yet to build one. The Year 2s had to step up and lead their juniors in building the tent.

Station 2: Signal Fire and Fire Starting Skills

Introduction:
The island that you are your patrol mates are stranded on do not have any resources. You would need rescuers to notice you and your patrol mates, so that all of you can be brought back to safety.

The Year 1s and 2s were tasked to start a signal fire and boil an egg in 20 minutes. The Year 1s were taught how to start a fire with 原子蜡 and about the distress signals.

Emergency Signal

Station 3: Physical Training (PT)

Introduction:
On this island, there may be ferocious wild animals and you would require the stamina and physical strength in order to escape.
Tasks:
  1. 3 minutes 站马
  2. 1 minute planking
  3. 3 rounds around the level
  4. 15 burpees
  5. 10 up-down planking

The Year 2s were given 5 minutes to demonstrate the up-down planking, burpees, 站马 to the Year 1s. They then proceeded to complete the Circuit PT in 15 minutes.

Station 4: Creative Gadgeting

Introduction:
Dark clouds covered the sky, a storm is brewing. You and your patrol mates need to build a structure to shelter all your logistics and 3 patrol members.
The Year 1s and 2s were tasked with building a structure using the given logistics to shelter all their logistics and 3 patrol members, in 15 minutes. They were given 2 minutes to discuss their ideas.

Station 5: Flagpole and Emergency Shelter

Introduction:
Stranded on this island, anything can happen to your logistics if you do not take care of them. Hence, build an emergency shelter to keep your logistics safe. At the same time, build a flagpole for identification of the site that you are staying.
The Year 1s and 2s had to build a flagpole and an emergency shelter in 18 minutes, under the guidance of the Year 4s.

Station 6: Inspection

Introduction:
To survive on the island, you will need to take stock of your logistics and do an inspection to ensure that you have everything needed for survival.
The juniors had to lay out all the logistics in the 配备 according to their own impromptu layout for the first time, in 4 minutes and lay it out according to the layout given for the second time in 4 minutes. For the third layout, the Year 1s had to lay out the logistics in 4 minutes, with the Year 2s only allowed to give instructions. The Year 4s then shared the rationale behind inspection and the various purposes of the items in the 配备.

Layout

Mass Station: Games

Introduction:
Good job for completing all the station and conquering all tasks. You are just one step away from being saved. Now, everyone will be tested for their physical fitness. Each patrol will be given a tic-tac-toe board and a ziplock bag with 9 numbers. They would have to choose a number and complete the tasks that is attached to it. Upon completion, the Year 4 following the patrol will strike out the corresponding box on the tic-tac-toe board. This will go on for 20 minutes and the patrol with the most number of complete lines wins.

Each patrol will have a tic-tac-toe board, with a task in each square. They will need to complete a minimum of three tasks to get a line across the board.
Tic-Tac-Toe Board
(1) 2 minutes plank
(2) 1 set of crab walk (to and fro) the length of pavement outside MRL
(3) 10 up-down planking and 15 burpees
(4) 30 buddha claps and 3 minutes 站马
(5) 20 lunges and 20 jumping jacks
(6) 3 minute leg raise and run 5 sets (to and fro) the length of pavement outside MRL
(7) 1 minute planking and 15 burpees
(8) 30 jumping jacks and 1 minute planking
(9) 20 lunges and 1 minute plank

Meanwhile, the Year 3s had COJ.

Year 3 Combined Obstacle Journey (COJ)

This COJ aimed to provide the Year 3 Scouts and Guides with bonding opportunities, to ensure that the Year 3s are equipped with hard skills and know what to expect in PLTC, as well as to provide more opportunities to train the Year 3s’ soft skills, with regards to areas such as team bonding with new people, flexibility and decision making. Penalties were given at each station in the form of PT, should the patrol be unable to fulfil certain requirements.

Overall Storyline:
Attention Players! We welcome you to our world, which is the very plain you stand upon now. We are known collectively as Fate, and as of this moment, we are in complete control of Reiron, this world. Why are you here, you must wonder? It seems you have angered the higher ups by your foolish mistakes in the past and now have to repent for your misgivings! You are currently on the lowest level of Reiron, the first floor. In order to escape this world and return to the mortal one, you, along with your fellow teammates must successfully clear all five floors of Reiron. Remember, only one team will be able to exit the Reiron while the rest of you will simply be sent to Limbo, living the same dull days over and over again for eternity.
Now, you shall have to set forth on this perilous journey to redeem your lives. Will you prove your worth, or falter in the despair? May Fate be by your side.

Inspection:
The Year 3s first had inspection. They were given 5 minutes to discuss and decide on their own layout to be standardised across all patrols. The inspection ICs then checked their layouts and gave comments. The Year 3s were then given 2 minutes to pack up and return any unnecessary logistics. They then laid out their logistics again according to the layout given, in 4 minutes. After which, they packed up and laid out their logistics a third time, according to their own layout to be standardised across all patrols.

Standard Guides OJ Layout

Reflection from a Year 3:
As expected, inspection was very messy and unorganised, as everyone felt extremely stressed under the tight time limit and pressure by the seniors. Furthermore, we were required to retrieve extra logistics that were not needed for OJ to layout, and that added to the confusion as some patrols had certain logistics while others did not. Everyone was also yelling and shouting all over the place and their voices overpowered the ICs’. The echoes bouncing off the walls just worsened the situation, to the point where I couldn’t even hear myself. I feel like we could have done a lot better, if all of us was more organised and quieter. However, I think that the main cause for our poor performance during inspection was because most of us were unable to deal with the stress properly, which led to chaotic situations in almost every inspection we’ve done.

Station 1: Leadership

Introduction:
Your choice in the final destination of either the Limbo or the Reiron, lies none other than in your very hands. Amongst you, there are hidden talents that will possibly guide you along the right path. However, it ultimately depends on you, who are the ones you choose to listen to or believe. Be wise and make the right choices in your limited time. You are now given no more than 20 minutes to complete your allocated tasks, or you face the risk of being one step closer to the Limbo.

The patrol will be told to build a structure without the use of any tripods, while most of the patrol members will be given a disability each, that will require the softer people to speak up to lead the patrol. These disabilities are primarily given to the more outspoken Year 3s and are allocated based on the observations and feedback given, prior to this COJ, but may change according to their individual performance during the station itself as well. This will be followed by the patrol being given a list of requirements at different time intervals during the 20 minutes, with each requirement being revealed to them every 4 minutes. This will then train the patrol’s adaptability in responding to the various situations, especially when it appears to be relatively simple at the start, as well as their creativity in coming up with a structure that they are unfamiliar with, given that the requirements would lead them away from standard structures to more unconventional ones with a limited number of logistics given to the patrol.
List of requirements:
-          Ensure the entire patrol is able to be sheltered
-          At least 8 gadget poles touching the floor
-          Ensure your logistics are able to be elevated

Reflection from a Year 3:
On 13 April, the Scouts and Guides had a combined OJ and were required to work together to complete all the stations in preparation for PLTC. For Station 1, we were given 12 minutes to build a structure, with one new requirement for the structure given every 3 to 4 minutes. The use of tripods were disallowed and several members of the patrol were given limitations, such as being blindfolded, unable to speak or unable to use their hands. With the need to adjust to every new requirement for the structure, it was easy for the stress to pile up. The added requirements may also cause us to redo the structure as we may not be able to achieve them, like the ability to fit the patrol under the shelter. Thankfully, two of the requirements were easier to plan out for, as they were about making a waterproof shelter and having 8 gadget poles in total touching the ground. However, the structure was not the only thing we had to worry about as we also had to look out for our own logistics and patrolmates. Overall, although the station could become slightly stressful without ample preparation, it also allowed us to learn to look out more for patrolmates as our manpower was already incapacitated, as well as the logistics as every one of them is important. The ability to adapt to any situation is important as well as we cannot expect everything to go smoothly as we want it to.

Station 2: Time Management

Introduction:
This is the (1-5) floor of Reiron, the Age of Extinction - One of your patrol members has accidentally stepped on a button, activating a time machine that sends your patrol 199 million years back in time to the Mesozoic Era, Jurassic period. One of your patrol members has suffered a fractured arm and sprained ankle from the high impact of the landing. Treat him/her in 4 minutes before he/she loses the ability to move. By the 12th minute, your shelter should be up and by the 16th minute, you should have a signal fire to alert your rescuers of your presence. We wish you all the best.

Checkpoint 1: First Aid
The FA has to be completed in under 4 minutes. Injuries include a fractured arm and a sprained ankle.

Checkpoint 2: Building a shelter
The patrol is to build a shelter that can shelter at least half of their patrol, in 8 minutes.

Checkpoint 3: Lighting a signal fire
The patrol will have to light a signal fire in 4 minutes.

Events:
(at 10th minute) Godzilla Ultrasound Wave - Plank on the floor for 30 seconds to avoid detection
(at 15th minute) Meteor Strike - All stop what they are doing and hide in shelter for 20 seconds

Suggested solution:

Reflection from a Year 3:
For this station, our idea for the shelter was to build a quadpod and cover the sides with ponchos. Since we only needed one person to tie the quadpod first, the rest went to help with the injury and the starting of a signal fire. Hence, there was too much manpower and no one was doing anything until the quadpod was finished. We managed to complete the signal fire and injury in time, and we took a longer time with the shelter. When we were done, we could see that the ponchos did not cover the top of our quadpod fully so it could not give us complete protection. After the seniors gave us their comments, I realised that we could have built the structure in another more effective way. Not only could we have put in more effort into thinking of a more creative and effective structure, we could have worked on better manpower allocation too.

Station 3: Communication

Introduction:
Your patrol is deserted on 2 islands that are separated by a river. On Island 1, you have food and water, while on Island 2 you have logistics, like spars and 麻绳. Find a way to reunite your patrol such that the whole patrol has food and water to survive a night. Island 1 would have 5 to 6 members while Island 2 would have 2 to 3 members, based on the size of the patrol. The Patrol Leader (PL) and Patrol Second (PS) would also be separated. For this station, only the PL and PS can talk while others can only reply to the PL and PS by nodding or shaking their head. No one can cross the river, except for the PL and PS. Take note that the height of the water is around the height of a 浅蓝木 and whatever you build cannot touch the water. You are given 17 minutes to complete this station.

Island 1
Year 3s are given an egg and a pail of dirty water. They are required to cook the egg and filter the dirty water using the solar still method (only testing steps for filtration process, real filtration is not required). 3 minutes into the activity, the Year 3s would be told that there would be a flood (ankle deep) in 10 minutes. More logistics would be given to them. They are expected to build a simple structure to elevate the food and pail of water. The structure is to be done within 10 minutes while the main activity (cooking of egg + filtering water) is to be done within the 17 minutes given.
Island 2
Year 3s are to build a structure that will allow them to transport logistics and manpower across the two islands (2 metres apart) and use the hoisting method (if applicable) to lower it down to the other island. They would be given 1 minute 30 seconds to plan beforehand. No demonstration will be provided due to time constraints. However, their structure must still be stable and feasible.

Suggested solution:

Bridge

Elevated structure for food and water

Solar Still

Reflection from a Year 3:
At Station 3, our patrol was split up. Some of us were tasked to build a bridge that would transport us across a “river”, while some of us were tasked to prepare a water filter and we were tested on survival skills. I was part of those building the bridge and we were able to make a decision quickly on what we should build. We decided to build two tripods and place a 木 in the centre to connect them, creating a bridge that one could cross over. However, we were later given feedback that our idea was not feasible as we could not transport the tripod over the river. Other than that, I think we worked rather quickly in building our structure and there was a general sense of urgency, even though I think it could have been improved had we pushed ourselves a little bit more, as we were left with attaching the 木 across the tripods when we 过时-ed. I felt that this station was quite interesting as we were given a chance to think of practical solutions to solve our problems and I think it was quite fun.

Station 4: Adaptability

Introduction:
Welcome to the (1-5)th Level of Reiron. You are surrounded by mist, and it is too foggy to what difficulties lie ahead. However, there is a clearing where logistics lie. Be careful not to make any wrong steps, for this may result in your doom. Listen out for It. It will give you instructions on how to survive this level and make it out alive. However, It does not repeat his instructions often. You will only be allowed to ask It to repeat each instruction a maximum of 2 times. At the end of the level, to successfully use your structure to pass through, you will have to guess what the structure you were instructed to build is. However, no clues will be given apart from how it is “from one side”. If you wish for more clues, you may sacrifice players, one for each clue. But only a maximum of 3 players can be sent as sacrifices. No time limits will be given either, but your survival heavily depends on your ability to keep track of time. Good luck, and keep your ears open and feet wary.

The patrol will be given instructions on the structure they need to build. They will not be given any hints as to what they will be building and what it will be for apart from it being “from one side”. Instructions will be given after the expected duration for each step is over. If they do not complete a step but the duration is up, the next instruction will still be given. However, the Station Masters will be relying on the patrol’s constant 报时 to know when to give instructions. Each instruction will only be repeated a maximum of 2 times if asked. If the patrol wants a clue as to what they will be building, a member will have to come out to do PT (3 min 站马, 10 pumpings) before getting the clue and returning to the patrol. There will be no time limit given to the patrols to build the structure, however since they do not know how many steps the structure would have and how much manpower they would need, they should still have a sense of urgency and constantly 报时.

Possible clues:
-          Surrounded but never soaked
-          The lower your expectations, the higher the chances of success
-          My brother keep enemies out from Reiron, but he also keeps you in

Suggested solution:

Drawbridge

Reflection from a Year 3:
For Station 4, we were tasked to build a structure, according to the instructions given to us by the Station Masters (SMs). We were not told about what the structure was and we had to guess what the structure was. Each time we asked a question, the person who asked the question was no longer allowed to help. Our patrol did not do as well as expected, as we worked slowly and failed to constantly 报时, causing us to lose out on a lot of instructions as the SMs only gave instructions out whenever we 报时-ed. Although one of the reasons why we were unable to complete the structure was because of time constraints, I felt unaccomplished and slightly disappointed as we did not work up to our standards. However, we communicated well between patrol members, and we were quite bonded as a patrol. In conclusion, although I felt that our performance was not satisfactory, we understood the importance of constant 报时 and good time management.

Station 5: Manpower Allocation

Introduction:
Welcome to level (1-5) of Reiron. Look out, for this is a battlefield, and anything could go wrong at any moment. You have to construct a tower, to gain higher ground over your enemies, while also maintaining your patrol morale and pride in this time of adversity by flying your flag high. You have 16 minutes to do so and do plan your time and manpower wisely.

The patrol would be given two structures to build, a flagpole and an A-架 tower. They are to complete this in 16 minutes. At the halfway mark, 8 minutes into the building of structures, 2 members would be made casualties. Other patrol members would be required to treat the casualties’ injuries while tending to their structures, testing them on their manpower allocation skills. After the casualties have been treated, they would not be allowed to return to the patrol to help with the building, and this would test the patrol’s ability to deal with the sudden manpower reduction and effectively re-distribute their manpower to allow the structures to be completed with greater efficiency.

First-Aid Scenario:
  1. Dislocated arm and shock
  2. Fractured collarbone and laceration across leg
Suggested solution:

First-Aid:
  1. Dislocated arm and shock
-          Dislocated arm: Advise casualty to keep still. Support injured part, in a position of maximum comfort for the casualty before immobilizing it with padding, bandages and slings. For firm support, bandage the injured part to an unaffected part of the body. Monitor and record vital signs, as well as circulation beyond bandaged point.
-          Shock: Lay the casualty down on a blanket to insulate him/her from the cold ground. Raise and support legs to improve the blood supply to vital organs. Take care if you suspect a fracture. Loosen tight clothing at neck, chest, waist to reduce constriction in these areas. Keep casualty warm by covering the body and legs with coats or blankets. Dial 999. Monitor and record vital signs.
2. Fractured collarbone and laceration across leg
-          Fractured collarbone: Tie an elevation sling to support and immobilize injured parts. Can be further immobilized with a broad bandage around the arms.
-          Laceration across leg: Wash the wound and clean away any dirt or foreign objects. Apply pressure to stop the bleeding. Apply an antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. Cover the wound with gauze and bandage around the gauze.

A-架 Tower

Flagpole

Reflection from a Year 3:
In this station, not only did we fail to build a structure which fit the requirements, we also failed to put our manpower to good use. We should have allocated our manpower more wisely, knowing that some of our patrol mates had certain disabilities. Instead of allocating our PS to be unable to move and look after the logistics instead, we could have asked him to give out instructions. This would then allow us to put such disabilities to our advantage, and not pose a hindrance to our activity. Also, we could have spent more time deciding on what to build at the beginning, instead of wasting our time and efforts to build a structure that ultimately, would not work out. Such poor decision-making skills had put our patrol at a disadvantage and hopefully, we will be able to learn from these mistakes.

The Year 3s then ended COJ off with a debrief by the Year 4s.

This marked the last 集合 before our Common Tests and we hope that everyone found this 集合 fruitful :)
