Skills Training, 28 January 2022

 Hello Guides!

Today we did Standard Gadgeting for 集合 to help the juniors revise on how to build the standard structures, after not having physical 集合 for quite some time.

1. Gadgeting Part 1 (Building of Indoor Fire Altar and Shoe Rack)

The juniors were tasked to build an Indoor Fire Altar and Shoe Rack concurrently, so that they could recap on their standard structures.

Reflection from a Year 2:

During the third 集合 of 2022, we did gadgeting. For the first part of gadgeting, we were required to build a shoe rack and a fire altar.  The shoe rack is one of my favourite Gadgeting structures to build, because it is just a quadpod with square lashes and netting, so I was excited to build it. But this time, I tied the quadpod wrongly because the 白绳 ended up on the other side of where it was supposed to be and it was not very tight so we had to retie it which took up more time. Then, we had to measure the lengths and make sure it was evenly spaced out into a square although I think we still ended up moving it when we tied the square lashes. I feel that we could have improved on how to 顶  the Gadget Poles so that we we would not waste unnecessary time remeasuring the lengths. We finished the first layer in time but we did not manage to complete the second layer because we forgot to take some logistics. Hence, sadly, the shoe rack ended up not being completed. Also, at one point, we left the shoe rack by a side and we all worked on the fire altar, and that was very bad because we did not 照顾好东西. I think to improve, we could have allocated manpower better to get the shoe rack done faster and also 报时 more. Besides, although we had built shoe racks multiple times, I had never built an indoor fire altar before. Thus, while building the fire altar, I followed the seniors' instructions carefully and we were almost done with the structure when 时间到 . It was our first time doing standard Gadgeting this year, and I feel that it was nice to be able to do Gadgeting and revise on my lashes after such a long time. Unfortunately, we did not allocate our manpower properly and were slow in our actions. Hence, we were unable to finish building the fire altar, and there were quite a few loose lashes in the structure. The feedback given to us ,from our seniors, about the fire altar was that we had to tie our lashes tighter and we needed to have a greater sense of urgency. I strive to find opportunities to improve in those areas in the near future during 集合.

Reflection from a Year 3:

As a refresher on conventional gadgeting structures, our first gadgeting activity was to build a fire altar and a shoe rack. As a patrol with five people, our manpower proved a challenging obstacle for the gadgeting session that required two conventional structures. After Monday’s Patrol Activity, we as a patrol came to realise that to keep up with the 团, our sense of urgency and quality of our lashes were our top priorities. The extra tip on “five burpees per loose lash” served as a motivating deterrent to do our best. The Y3s practised stepping up more to coordinate the Y2s and look at the bigger picture from time to time. One problem we faced was miscommunication at the beginning. We did not carry out certain measurements, which led to slightly uneven horizontals on the fire altar. This happened on the shoe rack as well, for the second layer was a little too high. This shed light on another problem we should focus on, by communicating within our patrol better, pointing out necessary steps as we give the Y2s a revision on conventional structures. However, there are also areas we have improved on, such as efficiency and speed. For five people, I believe our progress went smoother than expected, although there were minor hiccups along the way. Lashes that may have required retying for aesthetic purposes were ignored as we improvised off the bat with the time limit in mind. As a part of directing manpower effectively, we ensured that our lashes were tight with a maximum of four loose lashes. While this is an improvement, I believe there is still room for improvement as we received feedback on slowing down towards the end of the activity. We must always have a sense of urgency as slowing down could cost us in the future.

2. Gadgeting Part 2 (Building of Baggage Rack and Creative Structure)

The juniors had to build a standard Baggage Rack and a Creative Structure during this activity. This allows them to recap on how to build a Baggage Rack and also allows them to express their creativity through their structure.

Reflection from a Year 2:

The creative gadgeting that we did on Friday allowed us to build a unique structure that we felt represents our patrol. It let us bond as a patrol and work together in order to build something that we were proud of. We put a lot of thought into what we could create and tried our best to build a structure that had a special meaning to us. During the activity itself, we were so focused on building the structure that many of us forgot to 报时 constantly. We feel that this is something we can definitely improve on in future activities so that we can keep track of the time. Last Friday, we also built a baggage rack. We feel that we could have tied the lashes a lot tighter to make the baggage rack more stable. Also, we could have 收 our 鸟绳 so that our structure would be much neater instead of having 鸟绳 everywhere. This would have made our structure more presentable and tidy. Although we had room for improvement in some aspects, we felt that we did a decent job as we managed to complete the structure in the end. I feel that some main areas for improvement is that we could be more participative and try to tie the knots better. I also hope that we can work faster for the next few 集合s so that we do not 过时 all the time and of course to 报时 more often because the Year 4s keep reminding us to and i feel that we should be more aware about the time. I think that we can also start discussing on our creative structure while also tying our baggage rack so it is more efficient. Overall, we felt that building both structures served as a practice for us to improve on our lashes and sense of urgency.

Reflection from a Year 3:

Through last 集合’s second round of gadgeting, I learnt many soft and hard skills. First, from creative gadgeting. I learnt to think out of the box instead of doing a normal gadgeting structure. With the criteria of not being able to use tripods and quadpods in our structure, the first thing that came to mind was to use A-架s. Therefore, we tied two A-架s and connected them together with two 短木, followed by adding 定脚s. After that, we built a collapsible structure, with 9 triangles, each representing one member of P3. Our patrol flower, Jasmine, also has a maximum of 9 petals, which shows how each petal forms a bonded and united P3 Jasmine. Furthermore, one triangle has 3 sides, representing our patrol number, three. From the front view, the structure is also built in the shape of a rocket, which represents the fire in us and our love for Guides. From the back view, after attaching a poncho, we could also use this structure as a shelter. Moreover, there were 3Xs, two of which formed by the top of the A-架s and one formed by extra 定脚s which smoothened the collapsibility of our structure. The 3Xs on the structure also represented the 3 levels of Y2s, Y3s and Y4s. The Xs also showed our grit and perseverance in everything we do. Everyone “leaning” on each other as we all stay together and have one another in mind, supporting one another each step of the way in our Guiding journey. The structure was stable and yet could be collapsed, one of the firsts in all the creative structures we have created beforehand. This also showed P3’s flexibility and adaptability in anything we do, while remaining stable and united, stronger as one. Next, we had to tie a baggage rack concurrently with our creative structure. This tests us on how allocating manpower is very important in order for us to complete both structures well. We had to tie our lashes quickly and up to standard. The baggage rack structure also allowed us to familiarise ourselves with our standard structures, and teaches us to have a better sense of urgency. Besides, we also had to 照顾好东西 as we should not be leaving our completed structure too far from us as we tie the other structure. Hence, we need to be alert at all times to prevent our structures from getting kapped.  Lastly, I believe that due to a long period of not having physical 集合s, some of us may have forgotten how to tie standard structures and the baggage rack activity served as a refresher for us to revise our standard structures. I believe we also have a part to play to revise and recall on how to build the structures so that we wil be more prepared for the next 集合. Overall, both activities allowed us to learn to be more authoritative and distribute manpower more effectively, thus effectively honing our leadership skills.

Through the Gadgeting Activities we conducted today, we hope that the juniors were able to perfect their lashes and revise on how to tie the standard structures. It was also great seeing the Year 3s step up to lead their patrol, be it assigning tasks or discussing how they should build the Creative Structure.

Patrol Activity, 24 January 2022

 Hi Guides!

The following are some reflections from the various patrol members for this week’s Patrol Activity.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P1:

On Monday, our patrol did Creative Gadgeting, with the goal being to expose us to unconventional structures. It was a simplified version of the Gateway structure, with the change being the box towers replaced with 3D frames. As our patrol had 5 people, the amount of manpower we had for this complex gadgeting structure had fazed me, even more so when I was appointed as the IC. This was an opportunity to try my hand at leading and managing manpower, something that was crucial for our small patrol. As the IC, I was not allowed to help with the lashes as I had to communicate with my patrol on the structure’s design as well as direct manpower quickly. One obstacle we faced along the way was the difference in height of the 中木, which was used as the rungs for our 3D frame’s ladders. This resulted in uneven ladders and the carbon copying process got tougher, but we managed to improvise along the way, partially because of the lack of time to re-tie the lashes. Communication got smoother afterwards, as we got used to the speed and sense of urgency needed. As the structure was huge and complex, we worked together to 报时 constantly to keep track of our time and progress. I had to look at the big picture once every few minutes to ensure that the frames coming together were stable and tight. Though our structure was not perfect, our efficiency and improvisations along the way made up for our losses. After this Patrol Activity session, I have realised that while our lashes are up to standard, we did take too long on certain lashes here and there, which is something to take note of. In the future, we can work on this to ensure we tie up to standard lashes in terms of speed.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P2:

During Monday’s patrol activity, my patrol did Lash Training. We tied square lashes and diagonal lashes. I think it was a good activity as we got to revise our lashes and ensure that they were up to standard, especially since the Year 1s will be joining us in 2 weeks. Afterwards, we built a flagpole and the outdoor fire altar. We were given 40 minutes to build both, so we split the patrol up into two groups to build one structure each for more efficiency. My group built the flagpole. It has been quite some time since we built a flagpole so it was a good revision on building it. I held the flagpole down straight onto the ground while someone else took the pacings. We then 打进 the 银钉 and prepared to pull the 麻绳. As I was the assigned PS for that activity, I had to look at the bigger picture and make sure that the 麻绳 pulled was of equal length and taut on all three sides and that the flagpole was still straight. Subsequently, we tied the 麻绳 onto the 银钉 with a clove hitch and then a half hitch, then 绕 the remaining 绳 on the 麻绳 itself. Once the flagpole was stable and could stand on its own, we had to attach the flag. It was our first time attaching the flag to the flagpole, so we did not know how to do it and our senior had to show us. First we needed to loop the 蜡绳 through the hoop at the top of the flagpole, then connect the flag to it using 八字结. Then to keep the flag up, we tied the rest of the 蜡绳 onto the flagpole by looping it through each other. It was interesting as we have never done this before. For the outdoor fire altar, since my group did not build it, we just tried to help once we were done with the flagpole and went over the steps to build the outdoor fire altar. We managed to complete both structures even though we had to ask for time extension quite a few times. After 拆掉, we sat down as a patrol and played charades. It was a fun bonding activity and I enjoyed it a lot.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P3:

On Monday, I met my juniors before Patrol Activity at the gsl benches. I had asked about them and how they were coping with being year 2s. After making some small talk, we headed to the area outside the hostel canteen and waited for the rest of my patrol and the seniors to arrive. The first activity was capture the 麻绳, and the patrol was split into 2 teams and we had to build a structure that could conceal our 麻绳 from the other team while we had to capture that of the opposing team. However, if one of us had managed to take hold of the opponents 麻绳, as long as we were tapped on the shoulder by an opponent while holding it, we would have to surrender the 麻绳. The first to be able to take hold of the other team's 麻绳 while still being in possession of their own would win the game. My team members and I were having a good time figuring out how to outsmart the opposing team by confusing them and complicating our structure and hiding our 麻绳 with a poncho. Eventually, faith had resorted to hiding the 麻绳 outside of our structure but within the vicinity. Everyone was laughing and both teams had their wins and losses. The next activity required us to build an Indoor Fire Altar, at which we had difficulty tying as we had to re-tie loose lashes which took up time; and the catch was that we had to do burpees to see the layout. Eventually, we resorted to doing the burpees exercise, but we still had the problem where our zinc plate kept slipping off the 中短木. The tripods were not equilateral and we had to keep asking for time extensions. After completing the structure and receiving feedback, we 拆掉'ed the structure and had debrief.I felt so much more bonded with my patrol, and I'm sure everyone had a good time.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P4:

During Patrol Activity on Monday, we did Fireman's Ladder for the first time. It was a fun yet fulfilling experience for me. We had lash training beforehand as it was very important for us to ensure that our lashes were tight since we were stepping on the spars to climb up the Fireman Ladder. When we started building, we had to 重抽 the lashes a lot of times because they were not stable and could not hold the weight of a person. From this, we learnt that tight lashes are important especially during pioneering. After doing the ladder, we had a chance to step up on it and flip. We had to 顶 the 木 when someone climbed up the ladder. Trying to 顶 the 木 is hard as the person climbing’s weight is on you but since there are other people helping to 顶 the 木,it was easier for us to hold the ladder up. When it went up, it was definitely scary as it did not seem that high on the ground but once i actually got up it was very scary. But nonetheless I still went for it and flipped over the ladder. Feeling the adrenaline rush through me when I flipped over was very fun. I would do it again and recommend it to other people too.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P5:

On Monday, we had two parts to the Patrol Activity. For the first part, we had station games. We had to look for post-its and answer the Guides related questions on it. It gave us a good opportunity to refresh our knowledge on Guides related questions not usually tested during 集合. We also had to sing the 团歌 and it was quite tough for us at first as it had been quite a long time since we last sang it and for the Year 2s, it was only their second time singing it. Overall, I found the first part of PA quite fun. For the second part, we did gadgeting. We had to build a shelter large enough to fit half of our patrol and it had to include the frames from the drawing given while incorporating elements of our own. We were also not allowed to tie a tripod or quadpod, which made it more challenging for us. For the first 15 minutes, only one person was allowed to look at the drawing and for the subsequent 15 minutes the person allowed to look at the drawing would change. For the first 15 minutes, we spent it tying the frames and trying to plan out how we wanted to build the shelter. We decided to connect the two frames together and add diagonals. We also tied a poncho to the top of our structure to create the shelter. In the end, the shelter could stand and fit half of our patrol, however it was not very neat and not the most stable. We felt that we could have had a better sense of urgency and looked at the bigger picture more. The tightness, neatness and speed of our lashes could have been improved much more as well, as some loose lashes on the diagonals definitely affected the stability of our shelter. Overall, the gadgeting activity  gave us a great opportunity to step up more and improve on areas that we are weaker in before the Year 1s join us.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P6:

During Monday’s Patrol Activity (PA), my patrol did Fireman’s Ladder. We were required to collect 麻绳, sufficient helmets for the patrol, 青木, 红木, as well as a mattress. My patrol had to split our manpower equally to collect logistics since there were some logistics in 团部 and some were at the backstore. As we were tying the ladder, we would allocate our Year 2s to tie more lashes so that they could revise their standard lashes and improve on them. We would also 报时 more often for our patrol mates to hear and the Year 2s would also 报时 more without the need for the Year 3s prompting, which I think is a good improvement. Since we have not done Fireman’s Ladder in quite a while, this patrol activity allowed us to revise on how to build a Fireman’s Ladder, since we would usually only build it on the last PA. I also got to step up to ask for time extension more often as well as assist my patrol mates. I believe that this activity not only helped my patrol bond closely, it also allows us to understand how important teamwork is. We had to work together as a patrol to help 顶角 so that the structure was steady and would be safe for our patrol mates. We would also cheer one another on and encourage one another to do the Fireman’s Ladder. Even though some of us were afraid, we would still stand on the second step for a while and I think that it made me a bit more confident to do the Fireman’s Ladder in the future. Although this PA was a bit more relaxed as compared to Friday 集合s, we still managed to 报时 often and complete the activity as instructed, leaving enough time for everyone to climb the ladder. All in all, I definitely enjoyed this PA session and I do look forward to similar Patrol Activities in the near future.

We hope that everyone enjoyed themselves and bonded with their patrol during this week's Patrol Activity!

Skills Training, 21 January 2022

 Hello Guides!

Today we finally had a physical 集合 where we conducted Inspection and Obstacle Journey!

Inspection:

Since the juniors did not have physical Inspection recently, the Inspection activity helped them to recap on the standard timing and logistics for Inspection. They also learnt the importance of 照顾好人,照顾好东西 and this also helps them in building a greater sense of urgency.

Reflection from a Year 3:

We had inspection during 集合. It was the first time in a while and the whole thing was very chaotic. For the first round, we had two ICs that could see the layout of the 配备 and had to convey the layout to the rest of the 团. It was really messy and chaotic overall as we could not hear them properly due to them walking around and telling the patrols individually which led to the whole Inspection taking a lot of time and we had to keep asking for time extension. Other than that our things kept getting kapped and i felt that we could have worked on 照顾好人照顾好东西 better. During the second round of Inspection, the Year 3s could not touch the things in our 配备 so it familiarises the Year 2s with the things in our 配备. We made the same mistakes and other than that, our ICs got kapped too. On the third round of inspection, we had two volunteers step up to see the layout and instruct the other people to lay out the inspection. The ICs were too soft, leading to us having to run to them to ask about the layout which led to wasting a lot of time. Our ICs got kapped too so we had to step up and see the layout and lead the rest of the people. It was very chaotic as everybody was trying to tell their patrolmates the layout and due to the noise of the background, they have to shout which lead to it being very noisy.Overall, this was a good exposure to inspection for the Year 2s and the Year 3s as it taught us that communication is very important and that we need to be quiet to listen to the ICs so that the inspection could be more efficient.

Reflection from a Year 2:

The inspection that we did last Friday allowed us to learn to take care of our logistics better. During the inspection, everyone was busy, and as a result, a lot of our manpower and logistics were kapped by the seniors. From the inspection, we were able to understand where there was room for improvement and strive to do better next time so that fewer logistics and manpower would be kapped the next time. The inspection also helped us have a better sense of urgency. During the inspection, we constantly had to ask for time extensions. Sometimes, even after getting time extensions, we still could not complete it on time. We realised that the reason for this was because we had spent too much time and that we were doing things too slowly. We know that our sense of urgency is definitely something that we have to work on, and we certainly have to do things quicker in future activities. Lastly, the inspection helped us to realise that we need to 报时 more often. Even though there were 报时s every once in a while, they were mostly from the same people. We learnt that everyone needs to try to 报时 as often as possible, especially when we do not have anything to do. Overall, the inspection has helped us identify our areas of improvement, and we will surely try our best to do better in future activities.

Obstacle Journey:

Station 1 (First Aid):

The First Aid station allowed the juniors to revise on their first aid skills such as how to tie an elevated arm sling and how to check for a casualty's response within a given time. To add some challenge to the station, our juniors had to take turns to answer a question by the Station Master about Survival Skills. Hence, the juniors also had to take reference from what they have studied in the Guides Notes to be able to answer the questions.

Reflection from a Year 3:

For the first 集合 of 2022, we participated in Obstacle Journey. The first station for our patrol was the First Aid station, where it gave us another opportunity as Year 3s to revise our first aid course knowledge as well as teach the Year 2s once more on how to tie bandages. We managed to give the Year 2s a refresher on how to tie a jaw bandage and how to support a dislocated shoulder, using both the triangular bandage and roller bandage. It was a very smooth station to start off the games, promoting teamwork while we recap on basic first aid knowledge. Moreover, we managed to complete the station within 5 minutes, which gave us a huge boost in morale. The second part of the activity was to answer some questions the station IC gave on survival skills. We answered the questions quickly and confidently, a very positive sign that we had revised our guides notes. It was a very positive start to the first 集合 of the year, and I hope we can keep our 团’s morale just as high for many more months to come.

Reflection from a Year 2:

For the first Obstacle Journey station, I think that we, as a patrol, did quite well in terms of hands-on bandaging and answering some questions about first aid. For the bandaging part, I got a very good refresher on how to tie the head with a bandage to support a broken jaw which I previously thought was just to be left alone. Moreover, I think we, as a patrol, figuring out things together was a very nice bonding experience. As people always say, a group of people that have been through a challenging time together will emerge stronger as one. While this may be an exaggeration for this activity, I think this principle applies to all other CCA sessions as well. In Guides, I believe that we will be met with many unprecedented challenges but I think that as long as we do not give up and work together, we will solve all crises. As for the answering questions part, I think we all did well in reading up on the Guides notes and retaining information from it as we all contributed our fair share. Overall, I think the first station was a very nice experience and we did well as we did not 过时.

Station 2 (Signal Fire and Water Filter):

The Signal Fire and Water Filter Station allowed the juniors to put the knowledge written on book to practice. The juniors were able to use 木麻黄 to light a fire, and also build an actual water filter, just without its contents.

Reflection from a Year 3:

During Friday’s 集合, we played station games. In one of the stations, we had to build a water filter and signal fire. For the water filter, we had to first tie a tripod, and then tie a Mickey Mouse lash from the bottle to the 木. As we have not built a water filter in a while, we had a bit of trouble remembering how to tie it, as well as what to put in the bottle to filter the water and its sequence of filling. On the other hand, we were more familiar with the building of the signal fire. Firstly, we placed newspaper on the ground and poured water over it. Then, we placed the three 原子炉 on the ground and arranged 木麻黄 in a circle in the 原子炉. We then lit matches and placed them in the 原子炉. To extinguish the fire, we poured water over it. Overall, we thought this activity was fun and interesting and this station helped us to revise the survival skills of setting up a water filter and signal fire.

Reflection from a Year 2:

I managed to recall how to light a signal fire in the one of the stations during last 集合. Firstly, we should lay out newspapers and pour some water onto the newspapers to ensure that the whole place does not catch fire. Then, place the 原子炉 on it. After that, shape the 木麻黄 into a circle and place it inside the 原子炉. Strike the match downwards to light the match and try to place the matchstick in the middle of the 原子炉 . Then pour water on it again. This is how a signal fire is formed. I think that this is an interesting way of lighting a fire and it was also my first time lighting a signal fire. I was initially scared at first but was surprised that my matchstick landed right in the middle of the 原子炉. I also recalled how to make a water filter in the last 集合. Firstly, we made a tripod, and then tied 白绳 to a bottle which was cut into half and had holes punched in. We then tied the bottle to the tripod. Even though it was not a complete water filter, we still learnt how to set up the water filter, before its contents were filled. I feel that this was a good experience as we were able to try hands-on to set up the water filter. Then, we had to fill the bottle with sand, stones, pebbles and charcoal to make sure our water is completely filtered and safe for human use and consumption. I think this activity was interesting as it is my first time making a water filter. I feel that it will be useful when surviving outdoors as humans can go without food for a while but will still need water. Hence, setting up a water filter can aid in survival as people can still obtain drinkable water.

Station 3 (Post-its Survival Skills):

The Post-its Survival Skills station allowed the juniors to revise their trekking signs and Guides knowledge. The patrol had to work together to look for the post-its, before tapping on their thinking hats to recall what the trekking signs mean.

Reflection from a Year 3:

Through last 集合's Post-its survival skills,  I experienced and learnt a lot of things. Firstly, I had the opportunity to revise the content of my Guides notes. Secondly, I had the opportunity to do active recalling after revising our Guides notes as we had to recognise the different trekking signs. Some of the trekking signs was more unknown as they were hardly tested, such as “evening”, “pass by”, “enter here”, “leave”, “well ahead”, “beware of dogs”, 水池”, “安全”, which helped me to refresh my knowledge. Thirdly, I also enjoyed the game of finding the Post-its with my patrol juniors and batchmates. This served as a good opportunity for us to bond as a patrol as we have not had many 集合 sessions together. Furthermore, this allowed some of the Year 2s to step up and revise their trekking signs too.  Moreover, I think all of us also thoroughly enjoyed the station, especially since it was led by our senior in the same patrol as us. She effectively helped us to ensure that everyone had a chance to recall our trekking signs by asking a variety of people to answer the trekking signs. All in all, I feel that this was a great bonding session for our patrol as everyone was involved in the search for Post-its and I enjoyed this station very much.

Reflection from a Year 2:

Last week's 集合 was very fun overall as i like Obstacle Journey a lot. The first station I had to participate in was station 3. We had to look for eight post-its hidden around the classroom and solve the trekking signs written on them. I thought that the seniors hid the post-its quite well as it was quite difficult to find them. However, we persevered and managed to find them. This is a great activity to help us recap on the Guides Notes and also trekking signs, as we seldom have the chance to revise our trekking signs. Through searching for the post-its with my patrol, I felt that it was a great opportunity for us to bond. Overall, last week's 集合 was very enjoyable as it was a fun way to remember the basics of Guides and recap the Guides Notes through the post-it station. I will remember the hard and soft skills taught to improve myself next time there is 集合.

Station 4 (Draw It!):

The Draw It! station allowed the juniors to learn the importance of giving clear instructions to the patrol so that the others following the instructions can carry them out smoothly. One patrol member had to step up to give instructions on how to replicate a drawing passed to her, and the other patrol members had to draw based on the instructions given.

Reflection from a Year 3:

Station 4 was quite interesting as we were asked to draw a picture according to instructions given by our patrol mates. This was quite difficult as it not only tested our drawing skills and our memory of the guides logos, we also had to listen carefully to the instructions given. Whoever was giving the  instructions also had to make them as clear as possible. I found it really difficult to understand the instructions without looking at the photo of the drawing but I feel that this activity helped all of us as a patrol to learn how to give clearer instructions with directions and specific details. I think this also helped the Year 2s to become more familiar with the guides logos and pick up effective communication as a soft skill. I think this would be useful for them when they start stepping up more to lead the Year 1s. For the Year 3s, it also helps us learn to give clearer instructions to our juniors and listen to each other more when directions are given. I think this would also be very useful when we carry out Inspection so that we can listen to the ICs and the ICs would be able to provide clear instructions. I feel that this activity would also be quite a useful activity for future Yearn1s to be familiar with the guides logos and learn the importance of communication since this is also a relatively simple activity. Overall I found this activity to be quite meaningful and effective.

Reflection from a Year 2:

During the first 集合 of 2022, we had Obstacle Journey. The first station we participated in was station 4, which was about someone describing a picture, and everyone else in the patrol trying to draw out the picture. Through the station, I learnt that it is really difficult for us to give explicitly clear instructions, and yet it is difficult for us to do things without clear instructions. During the 2 rounds, I drew in the first round and described in the next round. Both jobs were not easy, and they both had difficult parts to them. For the drawing, if the description was not clear, we would be very confused about the position, orientation, or even how to draw the specific thing. This is an example of miscommunication, which can happen in daily life. For example, the miscommunication between the person describing and the people drawing is similar to the miscommunications between colleagues in a workplace, possibly causing something to go very wrong. However, it was also definitely not easy to describe the picture well. Everyone has different interpretations of the same word, which causes everyone's drawings to be different  The person describing has to find a way to describe something so clearly such that there will be no misinterpretations, which is not an easy task. Although I tried my best when I was trying to describe the drawings, I definitely could have been more clear in my descriptions, for example, adding in more details. I feel that both parties have to play their part in communicating to avoid miscommunications. For example, the person speaking has to be as clear as possible, and the person listening has to listen attentively and ask questions to clear any doubts. This station game helped me to learn more about how to avoid miscommunications, which is an important skill to have in our daily lives. Thus, this station was a very fun way to learn about miscommunications and the consequences of them.

Station 5 (Physical Training):

For this Physical Training Station, we aim to help our juniors slowly build their stamina as we have not had physical 集合 for quite some time. Through doing Physical Training, it gave the juniors a chance to bond as they cheer each other on while doing the PT sets.

Reflection from a Year 3:

Obstacle Journey Station 5 was the Physical Training station and I felt that it was quite fun. The PT we picked and had to do was run 1 round, 10 jumping jacks and run another round. We also had to answer questions related to survival skills every few minutes as well. I felt that the PT was not too exhausting and it really helped to boost our morale, as it was our first station, and helped us to bond more as a patrol. I was happy that we managed to answer the questions on survival skills correctly. However, I felt that as Year 3s, we could have involved the Year 2s much more when answering the questions so that they would have the opportunity to learn and are able to pass down the knowledge to the Year 1s when they arrive. During questions like “list 3 sources of water”, we could have let the Y2s list sources of water they knew and give hints to help them when they did not know. This would give them a chance to learn more from this OJ station. Another area we could have improved on was more constant 报时, this would not only boost the morale more but also help us keep better track of time. Overall, I felt that this station was fun but not too tiring, and really helped us to bond more as a patrol.

Reflection from a Year 2:

During the experience in the PT station, we did various activities such as running around the block as well as doing jumping jacks. Despite the activities being slightly challenging and exhausting, we were glad that we managed to overcome them as a patrol. While we were doing the activities together, our seniors encouraged us to count together as a patrol and surprisingly, it got our minds of the fact that we were doing the strenuous activity and instead, made us feel more bonded with each other. We could really feel the team spirit of the patrol too. We also found this station extremely fruitful as it was the first station that we did and we had to answer questions related to Guides. Originally, we did not know the answers to the questions, however, our seniors patiently guided and taught us. It was also very enriching as we learnt things such as how to treat an open fracture and different sources of water. This station made us feel more bonded to each other. However, we felt that we could have 报时 louder and more constantly to help keep the morale up. All in all, we found this activity very enriching and wonderful.

Station 6 (Creative Gadgeting - Shelter):

This Creative Gadgeting station not only allows the juniors to work under pressure, as the given timing was quite short, they also had to learn how to make use of their surroundings effectively, such that their shelter could stand on its own. Besides, we also added a handicap midway, whereby the Year 3s could only tie with one hand. This aims to train our juniors to be quick on their feet and to work faster so that they can still adapt and complete their structures on time.

Reflection from a Year 3:

During last Friday’s 集合, we did Obstacle Journey (OJ) and one of the stations was the Creative Shelter Station. We were instructed to build a shelter using the 木 and 白绳 provided, as well as some of the chairs or tables in the classroom. During the station, we had to cooperate with our Year 2 juniors and instruct them on what to do, so that we could split the manpower equally. Also, the Year 4 seniors gave us a condition, which was to only allow the Year 2s to use both their hands to tie, while the Year 3s could only use one hand each. This helped us communicate better with our juniors so that they could understand what the rationale of the shelter was. We also managed to relatively 报时 more often and get our Year 2s to 报时 more as well. We could also recap on some of our basic lashes with the Year 2s, including square lash and diagonal lash. I believe that this station allowed my patrol to come together and bond, and also improve our teamwork and communication skills, which is crucial especially in Guides. All in all, I do look forward to future 集合s and Obstacle Journeys with my patrol as it is meaningful.

Reflection from a Year 2:

For the Creative Shelter station, we had built a structure that consisted of two A-架s, with one 木 that was tied to the top of the two A-架s using a square lash.  We had laid a poncho on the top of the 木.  We also tied two 木s to the side of the A-架s to 顶角. At first, we had managed to allocate manpower in a way so that all of us were doing something instead of standing at one side doing nothing. However, after we were done with both A-架s, we had spent quite a bit of time already, and had to rush the square lash that tied the 木 to the top of the A-架s. I feel that I could have tied the A-架s faster as well as tighter so that I could have more time to properly tie the square lash. Another thing that I think that we could have improved on was 报时.  I think most of us were either too focused on doing our task or forgot about 报时, and so there weren't a lot of us that 报时. Other than that, I think our allocation of manpower and also our teamwork were acceptable during the station.

We hope that everyone managed to recap on their Guides notes and the standard logistics for an Inspection. More importantly, we hope that everyone is able to transition smoothly back to physical CCA and enjoyed today’s 集合.
