 Hello Guides!

Today we did Standard Gadgeting for 集合 to help the juniors revise on how to build the standard structures, after not having physical 集合 for quite some time.

1. Gadgeting Part 1 (Building of Indoor Fire Altar and Shoe Rack)

The juniors were tasked to build an Indoor Fire Altar and Shoe Rack concurrently, so that they could recap on their standard structures.

Reflection from a Year 2:

During the third 集合 of 2022, we did gadgeting. For the first part of gadgeting, we were required to build a shoe rack and a fire altar.  The shoe rack is one of my favourite Gadgeting structures to build, because it is just a quadpod with square lashes and netting, so I was excited to build it. But this time, I tied the quadpod wrongly because the 白绳 ended up on the other side of where it was supposed to be and it was not very tight so we had to retie it which took up more time. Then, we had to measure the lengths and make sure it was evenly spaced out into a square although I think we still ended up moving it when we tied the square lashes. I feel that we could have improved on how to 顶  the Gadget Poles so that we we would not waste unnecessary time remeasuring the lengths. We finished the first layer in time but we did not manage to complete the second layer because we forgot to take some logistics. Hence, sadly, the shoe rack ended up not being completed. Also, at one point, we left the shoe rack by a side and we all worked on the fire altar, and that was very bad because we did not 照顾好东西. I think to improve, we could have allocated manpower better to get the shoe rack done faster and also 报时 more. Besides, although we had built shoe racks multiple times, I had never built an indoor fire altar before. Thus, while building the fire altar, I followed the seniors' instructions carefully and we were almost done with the structure when 时间到 . It was our first time doing standard Gadgeting this year, and I feel that it was nice to be able to do Gadgeting and revise on my lashes after such a long time. Unfortunately, we did not allocate our manpower properly and were slow in our actions. Hence, we were unable to finish building the fire altar, and there were quite a few loose lashes in the structure. The feedback given to us ,from our seniors, about the fire altar was that we had to tie our lashes tighter and we needed to have a greater sense of urgency. I strive to find opportunities to improve in those areas in the near future during 集合.

Reflection from a Year 3:

As a refresher on conventional gadgeting structures, our first gadgeting activity was to build a fire altar and a shoe rack. As a patrol with five people, our manpower proved a challenging obstacle for the gadgeting session that required two conventional structures. After Monday’s Patrol Activity, we as a patrol came to realise that to keep up with the 团, our sense of urgency and quality of our lashes were our top priorities. The extra tip on “five burpees per loose lash” served as a motivating deterrent to do our best. The Y3s practised stepping up more to coordinate the Y2s and look at the bigger picture from time to time. One problem we faced was miscommunication at the beginning. We did not carry out certain measurements, which led to slightly uneven horizontals on the fire altar. This happened on the shoe rack as well, for the second layer was a little too high. This shed light on another problem we should focus on, by communicating within our patrol better, pointing out necessary steps as we give the Y2s a revision on conventional structures. However, there are also areas we have improved on, such as efficiency and speed. For five people, I believe our progress went smoother than expected, although there were minor hiccups along the way. Lashes that may have required retying for aesthetic purposes were ignored as we improvised off the bat with the time limit in mind. As a part of directing manpower effectively, we ensured that our lashes were tight with a maximum of four loose lashes. While this is an improvement, I believe there is still room for improvement as we received feedback on slowing down towards the end of the activity. We must always have a sense of urgency as slowing down could cost us in the future.

2. Gadgeting Part 2 (Building of Baggage Rack and Creative Structure)

The juniors had to build a standard Baggage Rack and a Creative Structure during this activity. This allows them to recap on how to build a Baggage Rack and also allows them to express their creativity through their structure.

Reflection from a Year 2:

The creative gadgeting that we did on Friday allowed us to build a unique structure that we felt represents our patrol. It let us bond as a patrol and work together in order to build something that we were proud of. We put a lot of thought into what we could create and tried our best to build a structure that had a special meaning to us. During the activity itself, we were so focused on building the structure that many of us forgot to 报时 constantly. We feel that this is something we can definitely improve on in future activities so that we can keep track of the time. Last Friday, we also built a baggage rack. We feel that we could have tied the lashes a lot tighter to make the baggage rack more stable. Also, we could have 收 our 鸟绳 so that our structure would be much neater instead of having 鸟绳 everywhere. This would have made our structure more presentable and tidy. Although we had room for improvement in some aspects, we felt that we did a decent job as we managed to complete the structure in the end. I feel that some main areas for improvement is that we could be more participative and try to tie the knots better. I also hope that we can work faster for the next few 集合s so that we do not 过时 all the time and of course to 报时 more often because the Year 4s keep reminding us to and i feel that we should be more aware about the time. I think that we can also start discussing on our creative structure while also tying our baggage rack so it is more efficient. Overall, we felt that building both structures served as a practice for us to improve on our lashes and sense of urgency.

Reflection from a Year 3:

Through last 集合’s second round of gadgeting, I learnt many soft and hard skills. First, from creative gadgeting. I learnt to think out of the box instead of doing a normal gadgeting structure. With the criteria of not being able to use tripods and quadpods in our structure, the first thing that came to mind was to use A-架s. Therefore, we tied two A-架s and connected them together with two 短木, followed by adding 定脚s. After that, we built a collapsible structure, with 9 triangles, each representing one member of P3. Our patrol flower, Jasmine, also has a maximum of 9 petals, which shows how each petal forms a bonded and united P3 Jasmine. Furthermore, one triangle has 3 sides, representing our patrol number, three. From the front view, the structure is also built in the shape of a rocket, which represents the fire in us and our love for Guides. From the back view, after attaching a poncho, we could also use this structure as a shelter. Moreover, there were 3Xs, two of which formed by the top of the A-架s and one formed by extra 定脚s which smoothened the collapsibility of our structure. The 3Xs on the structure also represented the 3 levels of Y2s, Y3s and Y4s. The Xs also showed our grit and perseverance in everything we do. Everyone “leaning” on each other as we all stay together and have one another in mind, supporting one another each step of the way in our Guiding journey. The structure was stable and yet could be collapsed, one of the firsts in all the creative structures we have created beforehand. This also showed P3’s flexibility and adaptability in anything we do, while remaining stable and united, stronger as one. Next, we had to tie a baggage rack concurrently with our creative structure. This tests us on how allocating manpower is very important in order for us to complete both structures well. We had to tie our lashes quickly and up to standard. The baggage rack structure also allowed us to familiarise ourselves with our standard structures, and teaches us to have a better sense of urgency. Besides, we also had to 照顾好东西 as we should not be leaving our completed structure too far from us as we tie the other structure. Hence, we need to be alert at all times to prevent our structures from getting kapped.  Lastly, I believe that due to a long period of not having physical 集合s, some of us may have forgotten how to tie standard structures and the baggage rack activity served as a refresher for us to revise our standard structures. I believe we also have a part to play to revise and recall on how to build the structures so that we wil be more prepared for the next 集合. Overall, both activities allowed us to learn to be more authoritative and distribute manpower more effectively, thus effectively honing our leadership skills.

Through the Gadgeting Activities we conducted today, we hope that the juniors were able to perfect their lashes and revise on how to tie the standard structures. It was also great seeing the Year 3s step up to lead their patrol, be it assigning tasks or discussing how they should build the Creative Structure.
