Skills Training, 4 February 2022

 Hello Guides!

Today, the year 4s had a Leadership Training session prepared by the Young Adults, so the year 3s had the chance to lead their juniors by planning a 集合 activity. They hosted Station Games and Inspection for their juniors.

Inspection:

The Year 3s planned Inspection to improve the sense of urgency of their juniors. Through Inspection, the juniors learnt to work together by keeping their voices down when the IC is giving instructions. They also learnt to 照顾好东西,照顾好人.

Reflection from a y2:

For Inspection this 集合, I think we improved from the last round of Inspection. Although it was not perfect, I think that it was less chaotic and that we were not as confused. In addition, we also took the feedback from the seniors into account and made sure that we 照顾好东西,照顾好人. However, I think one thing that we can improve on during Inspection is that we need to be quieter so that we can hear our ICs better. We also should look out for them more as without them, we would be unable to follow the layout. That being said, I had two takeaways from this Inspection. One of them being that we should always try to keep our belongings as close together as possible to prevent them from getting kapped. We should also look around from time to time to ensure that everyone and everything is present. The second thing I learnt is that we should always pay attention to the time and 报时. This is to ensure that we ask for time extension earlier before we 过时, and also to make sure we are at the right pace and not falling behind time. I think this concept of 报时 also applies to our daily life. We should always have a schedule planned and not just do our tasks mindlessly and according to our mood as we have deadlines to meet and goals to achieve. It is also important to seek time extensions for our work from teachers if we are unable to complete them on time. It shows that we are being responsible for ourselves and our actions. All in all, I think that there were certainly improvements from the previous round of Inspection. I hope that in the next round of Inspection we will continue to improve and learn.

Reflection from a y3:

During our CCA session on Friday, we conducted an Inspection session. For the first round, the ICs had a Year 3 and a Year 2 step up to read out the Inspection layout.  For the second round, two year 2s had to step up instead. One thing I could have done better was to step up and volunteer to be the IC when no one volunteered as this would help hone my soft skills such as communication and leadership skills. This would also be a good chance to be a role model to the juniors. During both rounds of Inspection, we did not take care of our logistics and manpower properly. This resulted in many of our logistics being kapped by the seniors. Hence, another thing I can improve on for inspection is to take care of our logistics and manpower, especially the ICs who were almost kapped by the seniors, as without them, we would not be able to have anyone to read out the layouts. We should also have a greater sense of urgency for future inspections and 报时 more often so as to remind ourselves about the timing as we 过时 for both rounds of inspection which is not up to standard. We should make an effort to improve on that.

Station Games:

Station 1: Creative Gadgeting

This Station allows the juniors to use some creativity and apply their basic lashes, to build a creative shelter which can shelter the shortest person in their respective patrols.

Reflection from a y2:

During Station 1: Creative Gadgeting, we were required to build a shelter that could fit our shortest patrol member. Hence, we built a shelter using a quadpod and a poncho from our 配备. Although we could have done better, I think our patrol did not do too bad with the structure. We 报时 quite a lot while building the structure, which was good since it was an improvement from normal 集合. We fulfilled the requirement of having our shortest patrol member fit into the shelter and the shelter was mostly waterproof. However, our structure was a little unstable. In strong winds and intense weather, it would not be useful. We could have made better use of our time and had a better sense of urgency to build a sturdier structure. We could have added 定脚 to make it more stable. In addition, our quadpod was not very tight. Another good thing that our patrol had was teamwork which allowed us to work together and finish the shelter. I hope the next time that we do Creative Gadgeting, we can do a better job by having a better sense of urgency to build a better structure.

Reflection from a y3:

On Friday’s 集合, we played station games. The last station that we went to was Station 1, where we did Creative Gadgeting. We had to build a structure in 8 minutes that could hide the shortest person in our patrol. We decided to tie a quadpod, and then attach a poncho from our 配备 on top of the quadpod as a cover. We split the work well as a couple of us tied the quadpod while the others prepared to tie the poncho to the quadpod when it was finished. We tied 八字结 onto each corner of the poncho, then tied it to each 木 of the quadpod. The structure we built did not manage to hide the shortest person in our patrol, as her shoes could still be seen since the poncho only covered the top part of the quadpod. The structure was also slightly unstable as we did not have time to tie 顶脚. It was quite disappointing as we did not meet the requirements of the structure we had to build. In the future, we will take note of the structure requirements more carefully before deciding on what to build. We will also try to tie tighter lashes and have a better sense of urgency.

Station 2: First Aid

This Station requires the juniors to apply what they have learned in the Guides notes to practice applying First Aid. They were required to tie a Head and Jaw bandage, ankle bandage, and answer some First Aid related questions.

Reflection from a y2:

During the First Aid station game, I learnt how to manage, dress and bandage injuries. For example, the methods of lifting a casualty are body support, piggy back, drag method, double-cradle carry, cross-handed seat carry and lastly fore-and-aft. The seniors also taught us how to tie a head and jaw bandage for fractured jaws and injuries to the head. Firstly, start from the side of the head and ensure some of the bandage is dangling behind the ear. Then, wrap two times around the head and twist the start of the bandage to form a criss cross with the longer end of the bandage. Wrap the longer end of the bandage horizontally around the head, and lastly tie a knot to secure the bandage in place. If the casualty has a ponytail or bun, make sure that the bandage is underneath it. For a sprained ankle, we must remember the acronym RICE, which is rest, ice, compress and elevate. To tie an ankle bandage, start from the ankle, wrap it around the leg two times then go down to the feet and do a figure of 8 with the bandage a few times. The bandage should also be tightest closest to the toe and get progressively looser from there to allow blood circulation. Overall, the First Aid station game was a fun and enjoyable one as it helped me to recap on some important skills. I will also keep reading up on my Guides notes so that I can answer more questions instead of asking my Year 3 seniors and also teach the Year 1s.

Reflection from a y3:

The station game on First Aid required us to tie a head and jaw bandage, as well as ankle bandage. We were also required  to answer some first aid related questions. I felt that I did well as I knew the majority of the answers to the questions asked. As a way to be more versed in this form of knowledge, I could revise it more often such that I would be able to recall it quicker and mess up less when trying to think of the answer. However, I think I could have also improved in my attention to detail, as when I tied the head and jaw bandage, I did not realise that I had to tie one round in front of the ear and one round behind the ear. Moreover, we could also have 照顾好东西 better as some of our logistics got kapped. In hindsight, we could have moved our logistics closer to us when performing first aid, such that we could have watched out for them better and have better situational awareness. This is important as our logistics are essential to us. The Year 2s were also not really familiar with first aid. This could be attributed to the fact that they did not  familiarize themselves with the Guides notes. As a senior, I could have gone through the contents with them more so that they would be more familiar with the knowledge.  All in all, I think this station was a good learning experience as we had the opportunity to recap our First Aid skills and have a better understanding on how we could improve in that area.

Station 3: Survival Skills

This Station tests the juniors on their Survival Skills knowledge. Firstly, they are to listen attentively to the Station Master’s instructions

Reflection from a y2:

This was our last station and it was pretty fun. We had to listen to the IC’s instructions and go to specific tables, and under them, there were red packets with post-its inside. The post-its had questions or signs on them that were in the Guides notes and we had to figure them out. I remember doing stations like this before and I had always enjoyed them. Some questions I remember were the steps to the edibility test, factors to consider before settling down in an area, and a phrase written in the Guides code that we had to figure out. One of my patrol mates knew it immediately without having to decode it, which was surprising. I already knew some of the answers, but I also learned new things from this station. I think it was very productive and I could brush up on my Guides knowledge. Also, working with people from other patrols to try to figure things out helped us bond more, which was especially good since we were working with P6 due to a lack of manpower. We did not have many chances to communicate with them before this activity. Overall this was a good learning experience and I was glad I could learn more things about Guides.

Reflection from a y3:

Station 3 of our 集合 was survival skills revision, which tested our knowledge of signs that could be found in our guides notes. As this round of station games was designed to give Y2s opportunities to step up and give it a go independently, we as Y3s did our best to pitch in with hints and attempts of our own. The survival skills station came in post-it notes in red packets under the table, which was a creative add-on on the station masters’ parts. With each post-it note we found, my answers were not too far from the mark, but it shows that I could do better when revising my guides notes, paying extra attention to the signs when doing so. As a station that we could finally relax in, this survival skills station gave us a pocket of time to communicate more than we did in other stations. However, one good takeaway was that we cleared the station quickly, thus the extra questions were given to us after we finished the post-it note activity. Furthermore, I noticed my Y2 juniors stepping up actively to solve the post-it notes and extra questions, which shows that they have revised their notes and it is a good improvement. In this station, we had no need to split manpower, which gave us an opportunity to move from table to table as a patrol. Our teamwork has seen an improvement, and so has the relationship and bonds amongst us. In future 集合s and station games, I hope we will be able to work on teamwork and bonding activities.

Station 4: Guides Songs

This Station allows the year 2s to learn more Guides songs since they have not been exposed to many songs yet. By singing as a patrol, it allows the patrols to bond and have fun.

Reflection from a y2:

During Station Game 4, we had to learn 2 Guides songs and be able to sing them by heart. It was one of our favourite stations as we got to have fun as a patrol and also sing the songs together. It went smoothly as we learnt the songs quite fast and also managed to learn an extra one. We were quite happy and proud that we managed to learn and sing them successfully in 13 minutes. The songs we learnt were Cannibal King, My Bonnie and Little Green Frog. We felt that learning the songs was also important as it is a part of Guides and we would also know how to sing along when the 团 is singing Guides songs. Learning the Guides songs would also allow us to have a variety of songs to choose from when we need to 领歌 in the future. The station game was also engaging and helpful to us as we will be able to teach the Year 1s the Guides songs when they join. However, we felt that we could have improved by reading on the lyrics beforehand so that we could have learnt the songs faster and maybe learn a few more songs. Overall, we felt that Station 4 was really fun and we definitely enjoyed learning new Guides songs that we can teach to the Year 1s when they join.

Reflection from a y3:

For Station 4 of Station Games during 集合, we had to teach the Year 2s some of the Guides songs and demonstrate it by singing it for them with the actions before performing it together with them. It was quite fun to teach them the Guides songs as they could learn the songs from us and they could clarify any lyrics that they were unsure of. At first, although it was a little awkward to perform for them and to ask them to try and sing it slowly while learning, it was a good bonding experience for us as a patrol. I felt that we could have had a greater sense of urgency and awareness of time even though the station was quite relaxed. We should have 报时 more and been slightly more proactive in diffusing the awkwardness and teaching the Year 2s the Guides songs. Despite the station not being focused on gadgeting, pioneering, or inspection, we should have taken better care of our belongings like our 配备 and our water bottles to ensure that they do not get kapped by the Guides In-Charge (ICs). Even though we did not need these items, they are still important and it is crucial that we 照顾好东西 and 照顾好人, as both our logistics and manpower are essential to our activities. Overall, Station 4 was quite fun and we were able to recap on our Guides songs, but we could have improved on our soft skills like our sense of urgency.

Station 5: Standard Structures

This station allows the juniors to revise on how to build an Emergency Shelter. The year 3s could take the initiative to step up and lead the year 2s when they face difficulties in remembering the steps on how to build the Emergency Shelter.

Reflection from a y2:

For Station 5: Standard Structures, we built an Emergency Shelter. Firstly, we tied the hood of the poncho and placed it face down on the floor. We measured the width of the poncho before we 打进 two 中木s. Then we used 白绳 to tie a 八字结 on all four corners of the poncho. We then took 3 pacings from each corner of the poncho, 打进 the 青头 at a 45 degree angle and tied a clove hitch then half hitch on it. However, we were still unable to finish the structure. I feel that we should have a greater sense of urgency when building the Emergency Shelter or any other standard structures. We should have also 报时 more often and constantly without the seniors having to remind us. We also 过时 but did not ask for time extension. We should have 报时 more often, so that before we 过时 we would have realised it and ask for time extension. Overall, I thought that this station helped me to recap on how to build a standard Emergency Shelter as we seldom had opportunities to build it in the past.

Reflection from a y3:

During 集合 last Friday, Patrol 4 and Patrol 6 merged and another Year 3 and I had to lead the Year 2s as we were instructed to build an Emergency Shelter. Since some of the Year 2s were still unfamiliar with the steps on how to build an Emergency Shelter, we had to guide them step-by-step and instruct them on what to do. I believe that the Year 2s could 报时 more often but overall I see more of them 报时ing more often, which is an improvement. This station also allowed us to bond together as a patrol as well as improve on our 照顾好人, 照顾好东西 and become more aware whenever the ICs kap our logistics. Since some of the Year 2s were from Patrol 4, this gave us Year 3s the opportunity to work together with juniors from another patrol and improve on our communication and leadership skills. We could also recap with the Year 2s about some of the basic structures in both gadgeting and pioneering, since it was asked in one of the questions. All in all, I enjoyed this station as we rarely build Emergency Shelters and I do hope that we can have similar station games in the future 集合s.

Young Adults Leadership Training:

The Year 4s attended a talk by the Year 6s on how we can become a better leader. Through role-playing, we better understood the difference between a strict and a stern leader and the importance of communication.

Reflection from a y4:

On Friday, we had a leadership training session as a batch. The year 6s were very approachable and friendly to give us advice about our journey as 领导层. They meticulously prepared slides for us to help us learn more about how to become a better leader. Firstly, they started sharing about confidence. Everyone in our batch had to share one time when they felt the most confident in their abilities, for example, when they were the IC for their Orientation Preparation committee. I learnt that our relationship with confidence is developed over time, and sometimes it only comes with age. To communicate with our juniors effectively, we need to adapt to their different learning styles to give them the most value. Secondly, it is better to be a stern senior rather than a strict senior. We should not personally attack the juniors for their mistakes and instead, we should attack the mistake and convey our disappointment. Lastly for debrief, instead of reading off the debrief pointers from our proposal, we should adapt it to the juniors’ performance. We can ask them what they did well and what they think they can improve on. Then, it was time for the role-playing segment. The year 6s prepared many scenarios that could potentially happen during 集合, and some were even from their own experiences. We were then to discuss as a batch and come up with an adequate response to those scenarios. I thought that this activity was very beneficial as I learnt how to respond more appropriately to those situations. The scenarios had many parts to them, such as the weather, juniors not knowing how to tie or do certain things, choosing bad quality logistics or even disputes between patrols. It increased the difficulty as the actions we had to take had to address all parts of the scenario sufficiently. Overall, it was a fun and productive leadership training session with the Year 6s, and we learnt more about ourselves in the process.

We hope that the year 3s had fun leading their juniors in planning a 集合, and the year 4s managed to gain some insights of how to be a better leader.
