Combined Activity with Scouts, 19 April 2024

 Hi Guides!

Today, while the Year 3s were doing their preparations for their upcoming PLTC, the Year 1s and Year 2s had a Combined Activity with the Year 1s and 2s in Scouts. The Year 1s did various station games, namely Escape Room, Captain's Ball, Capture the Flag and 3-legged Race, while the Year 2s did contingent training as well as Pioneering Lash Training. This allowed the Year 1s to get to know their batchmates better, and the Year 2s were able to use the chance to hone their skills in the respective areas.

Reflection from a Year 1 in P6:

On 19th April, we had our first combined 集合 with the Scouts and we had station games. Our first station was an escape room where we had to look for clues to decipher a code. We did not know the answer to some of the questions, so we ended up having to do burpees for a hint. While we were doing the burpees, we were out of sync and had to do extra burpees as we forgot to 等人. Our second station was an obstacle course that consisted of 2 parts. In the first part, we had to cross an area without touching the 白绳. As we could only allow 2 people to go onto the course at a time, we saw the mistakes others made and strategised. As I was the last to go onto the course, I did not touch the 白绳. The second part was an acid river, where we had to cross a stretch of land without touching the floor. We were given a few Velcro markers. We were able to complete this portion quickly but the time provided was still not enough and we forgot to ask for a time extension. The third station was captain’s ball. Our patrol ended up losing by one point, but our strategy which was to make long passes still helped us. The fourth station was a game of Capture the Flag. We were given water guns and balls to shoot and throw at our opposing patrol. During the game, many of my teammates ended up getting hit or shot and had to sit out. Hence we had to do some physical training exercises to get them back. In the end, my patrol won. The last station was 3 legged race. During this game, we had to partner up with a Scout. Even though we almost fell, it was still fun. In the end, we even did a ‘5-legged race’ with our fellow guides. Overall, combined 集合 was a fun experience but one improvement I think we could have made is to remember to 等人.

Reflection from a Year 2 in P5:

During Combined 集合, we practiced contingent. As our contingent was not up to standard during Honours Day, our seniors felt that it would be important to familiarise ourselves with the various commands in the contingent. Firstly, we practiced basic commands that were used during Honours Day. As the Year 2 Scouts and Guides had not done contingent together before, it was difficult to coordinate and work together. For example, we found it tricky to stomp at the same time. Additionally, some of us were not so familiar with the commands and may find it hard to keep up. We also faced difficulties with following the timer’s command. As the timer’s commands for Scouts and Guides were slightly different, this resulted in a lot of confusion. Despite the confusion, both Scouts and Guides agreed on a similar command for the timer to say. Although it was tough to coordinate, we repeated the commands again and again. After multiple attempts of repeating the same move, our teamwork improved and we were more synchronised. Furthermore, we learnt three more commands. We practiced the new commands numerous times until we were close to perfect. After the contingent training, we did lash training. We had to tie a tight square lash, as well as a tight diagonal lash. Although both my lashes were tight, I took longer than the standard time to tie both lashes. I learnt to keep to the standard timing to tie lashes as this would prevent us from 过时. All in all, this contingent experience allowed me to understand the importance of communication and teamwork.

Reflection from a Year 2 in P6:

During combined 集合 with the Scouts, we did contingent practice, as our performance during the Honours' Day Contingent was not up to standard. During the activity, I felt that everyone could have been more sure and read up on the commands and what they meant, as well as the timings for each command. Because of our uncertainty, the Year 4 commanders had to reteach and explain what the commands meant. I also think that we could have been more coordinated and listened to the timer more carefully, for example checking our foot at different timings which resulted in us having to redo a command multiple times. After the activity, the Year 2 guides were given 5 minutes to collect 22 白木 and 4 红木. Although it was a chaotic experience, we managed to collect everything with one time extension, after collecting logistics, we did lash training. I think that we could have improved on our lashes and timings. Overall, I think that this has created stronger bonds among our batchmates in both 团s.

Hope that the Year 1s and Year 2s had fun with the Scouts today and learnt something from today's Combined Activity!

Patrol Activity, 8 April 2024

 Hi Guides!

Today, Patrol Activity was conducted, where patrols were able to bond with one another, and Guides were able to strengthen their hard and soft skills.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P1:

During Patrol Activity (PA) on Monday, my patrol did Inspection. The first round of Inspection did not go very smoothly as it was the Year 1s' first time doing it, making them very confused and lost during the process. After taking some time to introduce them to the different items in the 配备, the next round of Inspection was done much faster and also within the time limit. Even though I felt that we could have still included the Year 1s more, I was glad that we improved. Next, we did gadgeting, where our task was to build a Shoe Rack, a 3-metre-tall structure, and a structure that resembled any organism. My patrol split up into 3 groups to focus on building each structure, but we were so engrossed with building our items that our logistics kept getting kapped by the seniors. Hence, we definitely should have looked after our manpower and logistics better and been more aware of what was happening around us. I also felt that I could have 报时-ed more throughout this activity as 2 members were already on Mouth Alert and the seniors had to keep reminding the rest of us to 报时. Overall PA was fun, but there were a few things I could have improved on like including the Year 1s, taking care of manpower and logistics better, and 报时-ing more.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P2:

On Monday, we had Patrol Activity (PA). We were told to build a creative structure. It was a box tower with a swing, which was something like the pioneering creative structure from the CCA Exhibition. We were given 1 hour 15 min to build it. The Year 3s were told to take turns being Patrol Leader (PL) every 30 minutes. We decided to start building with the frame. It took us 36 min to finish building both frames which should not be the case. Even though it was a PA, we should have worked faster with more sense of urgency. In addition, we also had to be reminded several times by Kei Wing to 报时. We should not have needed to be reminded to 报时 and we were too relaxed even though it was a PA. For future PAs, we will take note to work with a better sense of urgency.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P3:

The Patrol Activity on the 8th of April was really enjoyable. We were given twenty-five minutes to build a functional creative structure that represented our patrol. We got creative and built a tripod shoe rack with the number ‘3’, built using 短木, connected to the top half of the tripod. Overall, I think that we did well, although we could have worked faster. As the designated Patrol Second for the activity, I realise that I should have stepped up more. The 报时s and cheers coming from our patrol were frequent and I am proud to say that our Year 1s stepped up much more. Deciding to multitask, with one person tying the tripod while another building the number ‘3’ was a good idea and increased efficiency. In conclusion, the gadget was functional and we were all pleased with it. Afterwards, we moved on to inspection. We found it easier to work as a single patrol, as communication was clearer. This highlighted the importance of communication during inspections. I also learned that much time is wasted on panicking during inspections, reminding me to stay calm and focused. This was also the Year 1s’ first time doing Inspection. Through this session, I believe that the Year 1s now understand the importance of Inspection. Finally, we enjoyed playing games like Killer Game (werewolf), although the killers won, and Human Knot, which we found surprisingly easy. Overall, it was a relaxing and enjoyable day for everyone involved.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P4:

During Patrol Activity (PA) on Monday, we were tasked to make a creative gadget. This time, we decided to venture out of our comfort zones and go for something less traditional. We decided to make a chair. This would consist of five 长木s as the backrest, 4 中长木s as the frame of the seat, 4 中木s as the legs of the chair, and another 2 中长木s as diagonals to hold up the structure. In the beginning, we did not think of how the structure would hold up, and thus we did not think of diagonals. Only when we started building the structure, did we think about the structural integrity of the structure and we decided to request for the 木 required for us to be able to tie diagonals onto the chair. We were granted the time to go back to 团部 to get two 中长木s for the diagonals. After making the creative gadget, we had to make a baggage rack. As we have not made one in quite a while, it was a refresher getting to make one once again. After that, we did an inspection. It was a chance for us to teach our Year 1s the different items that are meant to be in our 配备.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P5:

For this week’s Patrol Activity, we built a Kitchen Table. As this was the first time pioneering for our Y1s and one of our Y2s, we had to ensure that they first knew how to tie the lashes, as well as were aware of what we were going to do. To accomplish this we made sure that every step of the way someone was there to guide them through the process, and made sure to constantly check on them to make sure they were sure of what to do. Some other hiccups that we ran into included the fact that we had a hard time tying the tripod lashes tightly, which led to us having to 重抽 the lash many times which resulted in a lot of time being wasted. In the future, we will make sure that we are more familiar with our basic lashes in order to ensure that we can confidently tie them quickly and tightly. As some of our patrol mates had yet to do pioneering before and were relatively new to guides, we also had some trouble with making sure that our structure was tight as many of the lashes were loose. To improve our lash-tying skills we will ensure that we have sufficient practice during lash trainings, as well as teach our juniors the proper technique or tips to tie tighter lashes. Furthermore, at the beginning of the activity, we did not have a very high morale and our sense of urgency was lacking, which led to us spending a lot of time to complete the two tripods. In the future, we can make sure to 报时 and cheer more often in order to keep morale high and ensure we work quickly. All in all, this Patrol Activity was a very insightful and enjoyable experience and I have learnt many things that I will carry with me throughout other activities.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P6:

During the Patrol Activity on 8 April, we were tasked to build a Baggage Rack and a Shoe Rack within 30 minutes. After the collection of logistics, we started building the structures. We allocated a Year 2 to build the shoe rack with 2 Year 1s, which we realised too late that it might not have been the best decision. Throughout the process of building the standard structures, our seniors have us a few tasks and decisions to make. One example is for us to choose between disallowing half the manpower we had from tying lashes, or every one of us using only one hand to tie for the next few minutes. We chose to disallow the use of one hand for everyone in the patrol and helped one another with the tying of the lashes. Through this PA, I learnt the importance of teamwork and team spirit. Without the effort put in by everyone in the patrol, we would not have been able to complete the structures. Overall, I think we did well in terms of working together, and communicating effectively throughout this PA.

Hope everyone had fun with their respective patrols today!

UG Experience Day, 5 April 2024

 Hello Guides!

Today, as part of the activities planned out for UG Week, Guides had a UG Experience Day, where they all learnt more about what other UGs did in their CCAs, namely Scouts, St John's Brigade and National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC).

Reflection from a Year 2 in P2:

On 5th April, we had Uniformed Group (UG) Experience Day, where we were split into groups and went to the other UG's booths to experience and learn more about what they do during CCA sessions. Firstly, the Guides went to the Scout's booth where we played a game of capturing the flag except we were capturing helmets. We also had a 麻绳 in our pockets and had to try and take the other team's 麻绳 to make them do forfeits of 15 jumping jacks. After that, we did 绳桥 and the Year 1s also learnt how to do it. Then we were told to go to the outside 1C classroom for our next booth but it was the wrong venue so we had to go all the way to GSL level 3 for our St John Brigade (SJB) booth. There, they taught us how to do the caterpillar crawl method for the transportation of casualties. I also got to experience getting transported on a stretcher. It was scary but fun at the same time. After that, we went to the National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) booth and we looked for papers in a classroom to piece together and decode a puzzle. Then we had to use objects and our heads to hit a balloon and get 14 hits consecutively. While doing all this, we had to be careful of the NPCC cadets coming into the classroom and catching us. If they did come inside, our patrol had to sit in a circle and cheer. After that we did Physical Training (PT) and when we had to do lunges around the Year 1 Block.

Reflection from a Year 2 in P6:

On 5 April, all the Uniformed Groups (UGs) got to experience Uniformed Group Day, where we experienced what other UGs do during their CCA, firstly we played, 打野战, where we had to obtain the helmet from the opposing team while making sure our 麻绳 does not get snatched by the other team. We also tried 绳桥, which is a traditional game that Scouts and Guides play. Next, we went to the St John Brigade's booth, where we learnt how to carry the stretcher, we learnt the caterpillar crawl, and some of us even got to sit on the stretcher and feel what being on a stretcher felt like. Lastly, we went to the National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) booth, where we played in an escape room and did physical training. All the activities that day made me closer to the 团, as well as my patrolmates, juniors, seniors, and batch mates. Overall I learnt a lot of knowledge from each Uniformed Group, especially St John Brigade as I have never carried a stretcher before.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P1:

On Friday, we ended Uniformed Group (UG) Week with UG Experience Day where each UG got to experience what other UGs do for CCA. First, we went to the Scouts booth where we did 绳桥 and 打野战. 绳桥 is not something we do as often in Guides, thus it was exciting and a good revision for us. 打野战 was also a fun game which allowed us to bond with the 团. Next, we went to the St John Brigade (SJB) booth where we learnt how to do the caterpillar crawl method for transportation of casualties on the stretchers. Some of us also got to experience being transported on a stretcher. Since we had never done this before, it was a very unique learning experience for us as we got to try something new with our patrols. Lastly, we went to the National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) booth where we experienced an escape room. In this escape room, we had to find clues and solve riddles, as well as work together with the patrol to complete certain tasks. Randomly, NPCC members would enter the room to "tap us out", and to overcome that we had to huddle in a circle and cheer. Moreover, after we completed the escape room we were allowed to complete certain Physical Training (PT) tasks to sabotage other patrols. This experience allowed us to bond as a patrol and solve problems together. We were also able to train and teach the Year 1s how to do proper PT exercises. All in all, UG Experience Day was a fun and enriching activity where we got to learn new skills while bonding with the patrol.

Reflection from a Year 3 in P6:

On 5th April, we had Uniformed Group (UG) Experience Day. We were able to experience what other UGs did for their normal CCA sessions, which helped us understand the nature of their CCAs more than what we perceive of them. At the Scouts station, we played 打野战 and 升桥, traditional Scouts and Guides games. I felt that the Scouts station was the most memorable as we were able to play games with each other and bond with my fellow Guides. We got to learn the caterpillar crawl method for the transportation of casualties. After the St John station, we went to Block G Open Area for the National Police Cadet Corps station where we experienced an escape room. There, we had to find clues and complete a series of challenges in order to decode the secret code to escape the room. After that, we did physical training where we could sabotage a group for every exercise we completed. All in all, UG Day was a fun and different experience where we were still able to bond with each other.

Hope everyone enjoyed the session today and was able to learn more about our fellow UGs!
