Annual Training Camp, 10 November 2020

Hello Guides!

The theme and tagline for ATC’20 was Esprit De Corps, the spirit among us.

The reason for the chosen theme and tagline is because we believe that the sense of belonging towards our CCA is important in encouraging all Girl Guides to put in their utmost effort and complete activities to the best of their abilities. To achieve this, we hope to see the 团 taking pride in what you are doing and we also hope a strong bond between both patrol and company mates will be formed through ATC this year.

The overall storyline is as follows:

In Year 2520, a deadly radiation was detected and was spreading on earth rapidly. You have heard legends of a spaceship named Christine in the mountain and you realise that being in space can protect you and possibly sustain the human race. You and a couple other brave adventurers begin your journey up the mountain to find Spaceship Christine. Survive this treacherous journey together with your teammates in your venture out into space. However, along the way, some of your people have been affected and their brain cells have mutated, causing them to develop a weird illness, The infected people continue to look and behave the same but have sudden urges to kill people. You quickly realise that you have limited time to find this spaceship as the threat grows larger. While trying to evade the disease, you face a number of difficulties presented to you. To escape from earth and save the human race, the remaining survivors hop on Spaceship Christine to search for safety. This is the only way to stay alive. The human race is in your hands. Now, quick! It is a race against time. Good luck.

Dome Tent Demonstration

Night falls and you plan to build a dome tent for you and your teammates to sleep in. However, none of you know clearly how to build a dome tent. Fortunately, your seniors found a manual and decided to demonstrate to you how to build a dome tent. You are to listen carefully and take notes so that you will be able to build the dome tents yourself afterwards.

Camp Christine Tent

However, you realised the dome tent is too small to fit everyone in. Hence, you decided to build a Camp Christine Tent which can fit many more people, and is also a lot more stable. You realised you are also unclear of the building of the Camp Christine Tent and your kind seniors have decided to help you further by demonstrating the proper way to build it. Due to a lack of manpower, some of you are needed to take turns to help build the Tent. You are to listen carefully and take notes so that you will be able to build the tents yourself afterwards.

Reflection from a Year 1

The Dome Tent and Camp Christine Tent lecture was really fruitful for me. It was my first time learning about the Dome Tent and how to set it up. After the lecture on the Dome Tent, I not only learnt how to set up one but also learnt its use, that it is for up to three people to sleep in. As for the Camp Christine Tent, although I have watched a video on how to set it up, I was still unsure about some steps. The lecture was very detailed so I managed to understand the steps better. I also learnt that the Camp Christine Tent was for up to eight people which was about the size of one patrol. Being able to walk around the tent to see how it should look like after it is set up helped me to be able to clear my doubts as I could also ask my seniors if I had any questions about the tent. The seniors were very detailed in explaining the steps for both of the tents and the pace was just right for me to also take down notes at the same time. I find the lecture for the Dome Tent and Camp Christine Tent meaningful as I learnt a lot more about the two tents after the lecture.

Reflection from a Year 2

For the Dome Tent and Camp Christine Tent lecture we had, I felt that it was very informative and useful. It had helped me clear some of my doubts on how to build the respective tents. After all, some of the skills may be a little rusty since the last time I had built the tents was during ATC last year. Hence, this lecture helped to recap the steps to build the two tents. The seniors not only described and showed us how to build the tents detailedly, they also pointed out many important things that we needed to take note of, such as how the big pegs are for the tent and the small pegs for the flysheet for the Camp Christine Tent. As this is the first time the Year 1s have seen the tents, the informative lecture is very useful for their learning, especially for they would need to teach the new Year 1s coming in next year. Also, I felt unclear about some steps in building the tents even after watching the videos and the lecture helped me understand better as we could walk around to see the tent and also ask the seniors when we are unsure about something. In conclusion, I felt that the lecture was very meaningful.

Physical Training

As the deadly radiation had been spreading on the Earth for a while already, it became a practice for all the humans on earth to do physical training everyday to improve their immune system.

Reflection from a Year 1

We felt that it was very tiring. However, it is important for us as girl guides. This is so as it teaches us a lot of things. Firstly, it helps us to work together as a 团. This is so as we have to do the exercises at the same time together. Through physical training, we managed to be more coordinated and learn how to 等人. Secondly, physical training also teaches us to persevere on and never give up which is an important value not only in guides but also in real life. When we feel the physical strain of the exercises, we cannot stop but have to persevere and continue on. Lastly, physical training helps us to learn that it is better to do things the correct and standard way the first time. If we do so, it would be much easier than to do it again and again. That session of physical training also allowed us to find out our areas of improvements like cheering more and having to 报时 more. We also learnt that it would be good for us to say '时间到' in addition to the timing if the time is up. We will try to do so more often the next time and we look forward to the next ATC session.

Reflection from a Year 2

The physical training session gave us the chance to revise our standard physical training and train our stamina. Stamina is extremely important in guides, especially in Annual Training Camp as we need to have good stamina to be able to complete it. We learnt to persevere as the physical training was quite difficult and we needed to stay strong and not give up to complete it. We also learnt the importance of 团 morale as it was easier to complete the physical training with higher morale. I felt that we could have a greater sense of urgency and did things too slowly. When we started a new circuit, we took a long time to get started and we wasted quite a lot of time with everyone just standing around not starting it. We also did not 报时 and cheer often and the seniors had to prompt us. We also did not 等人 or count together and had to redo some parts of the physical training. Some of us did not do the physical training properly and we also had to redo. In addition, we 过时 both times. I feel that we did not do the physical training very well and could do better next time with a better sense of urgency and standard physical training.

Creative Pioneering and Gadgeting

After receiving news of the location of the Spaceship, you began trekking, searching for days for the legendary Spaceship Christine. Your stomach started rumbling and you realised that it was near dinner time. You and your groupmates decided to build a creative structure using logistics from the backstore and Guides 团部 of Dunman High School that would aid you all in seeking warmth, resting and cooking your food.

Reflection from a Year 1

I felt that my performance at creative pioneering could have been better. As the Year 3s put me in charge as the IC of that activity, I think I should definitely have 报时 more frequently to let others know how much time they had left to build the structure, in addition to having a sense of urgency. I could also have cheered more to boost morale. As the IC, I also felt that I could have communicated with the other patrols better instead of relying on the other IC to do it. As for the lashes, I tied them tighter as compared to the first pioneering activity that I had but the pace of tying it was a lot slower. I feel that I should tie the lashes faster and tighter at the same time.

Reflection from a Year 2

I felt that I could have done better by having a better sense of urgency. I should have tied the lashes much faster and better by ensuring that I tied them within the standard lash timings. I also could have made sure that I 抽 the lashes tighter so that they would not be so loose or come out so easily. Another thing to take note is that I could have participated even more actively during cheers and 报时. If we had worked faster and more effectively by communicating with the other patrols better, we might have been able to complete our structures on time. The fact that we were unable to complete our structures made me quite sad as I wanted to see the campfire structure that the Year 3’s prepared for us, so this will be a reminder to me that I should put in even more effort the next time. Personally, I also feel that I could have stepped up more when helping to direct and help the others. I could have allocated my manpower better since many of the Year 1s in my patrol were not really doing anything, and if I had done so, we might have been able to complete the structure on time.

Continuation of storyline for the next ATC session:

After dawn, you continued trekking up the mountain. Your hard work has finally paid off when you stumbled upon the legendary spaceship. You entered the spaceship and it was working! Off to outer space you go!

We hope everyone enjoyed their 1st ATC session and gained something from it! See you during the next ATC session!

Skills Training, 6 November 2020

Hello Guides! During today’s 集合, we had creative gadgeting and station games!

The overall storyline is as follows:

It is the year 2040. Emerald, an organisation which was planning to invade all countries has been brought to a standstill by the Allied Forces. Although the war has ended and troops of Emerald are retreating from Singapore, Singapore is still in a state of shock. Unfortunately, some of your fellow friends from Singapore have been kept hostage by Emerald. As part of Singapore’s search and rescue team, you have been assigned to track down and rescue your lost teammates from the enemies grasp. You have to leverage on your guides’ skills and knowledge to complete this dangerous mission. Good luck and everyone will be awaiting your return.

Creative Gadgeting ( Bridge )

Having been assigned to the task, your team quickly sets off to find the captives. However, not long after your team sets off, you hit a roadblock. A huge swamp looms in front of you. You know walking around the outskirts of the swamp will waste too much precious time. Your team quickly sets out to build a bridge that will be able to get them across.

Reflection from a Year 1

During the bridge building, I realized that we had to improve on our lashes and knowledge on Girl Guides. This is because next year, we would no longer be the youngest and will have to guide the next batch of Year 1s and teach them. If we cannot set a good example of a basic lash or how to build a simple structure such as a tent or a shelf, it will affect them severely. Another thing I think we should improve on is our awareness. To avoid things or manpower to be ‘kapped’, we must continuously keep an eye on our things and take care of them. Another example is that we did not realise is that we could build the two tripods closer together. If we were more aware and realised this earlier, we could have been more efficient. Although we still have many things to improve on, generally, we have improved in a number of areas. We cheered a lot more and constantly 报时. We also asked for our kapped things back and better took care of our things. Our sense of urgency also improved and we managed our time better.

Reflection from a Year 2

For 集合, our first activity was to build a bridge. We had to follow a draft drawn by the seniors and had to take turns to look at the draft. We could not remember the details and did some parts of the structure wrongly and had to redo it after we double checked again. We also noticed that we had built the structure in the wrong sequence after time had run out and the structure was extremely unstable. We learnt to step out and look at the bigger picture rather than rush to complete a structure and to take note of the small details which may affect the whole structure. We also learnt to 照顾好人 and 照顾好东西 as we were so occupied with trying to finish the bridge that we did not notice that some of our items had gone missing. I also realised that it is a 团 effort and that if we see another patrol’s logistics or patrol member get taken away, we should also step up and ask for it back rather than think that it has nothing to do with us. While building the bridge, I felt that we could have 报时 and cheered more frequently.

Creative Gadgeting ( Tent )

After a long day of walking, your teammates have barely any energy left. Your team decides to build a tent, a place where you can rest and regain energy.

Reflection from a Year 1
Creative gadgeting was very fulfilling to me. We got to think of different ways to build a tent rather than sticking with the normal ones. It was also a good chance for us to apply and revise our 八字节,square and diagonal lashes. We had to listen to all of our ideas in order to create an improvised structure successfully. However, our structure was quite unstable. With the help of our Year 3 seniors, we learnt that we should always prioritize the stability of the structure before making the structure more advanced. We also learnt to make sure that we look at the bigger picture of the structure to make sure nothing is slanted and also make sure that there is no protrusion. Lastly, we learnt to 照顾好人 and 照顾好东西. Overall, we learnt many things from creative gadgeting so it was very fulfilling.

Reflection from a Year 2

For yesterday’s 集合, our patrol worked together to build a shelter during creative gadgeting. It was a very meaningful 集合 as we benefited a lot from the process. Firstly, we learnt the importance of 照顾好人,照顾好东西. We should not only focus on what we are doing but also on our surroundings. Instead of simply asking back our logistics and manpower, we could have adapted to the situation. For example, we could have moved our logistics under the structure. Secondly, we should plan ahead and make sure our structure is stable. Since we used A-架 as part of the structure,  it was essential to include a diagonal but we did not do that. It is also important for us to complete the structure as a patrol for maximum efficiency. As the Year 2s, we should not only be task oriented and should help teach our Year 1s and guide them as well. It is also essential that we constantly 报时 to keep track of time so that we do not 过时 and we should also cheer to boost our 团 morale. Afterall, this is a 团 effort. We also learnt that we should not do things blindly without an aim in mind. Before doing so, we should also understand the rationale behind it so that we can complete it in a much better way.

Station 1: Trekking Signs, Water Filter and Physical Training

You and your team have been walking in the forest for a while now, searching for any clues that might lead you to the captives. Suddenly, one of your teammates chanced upon signs carved on a tree, probably left behind by the captives. You know that solving these trekking signs will lead you closer to them. You will have to find 10 post-its and solve them.

After walking for a few hours, your team sits down to rest and recover energy. When you feel for your water bottle, you realise that there is no more water left in it. You walk to a nearby river to refill your bottle, only to find that the water is muddy. With no time to waste, your team quickly assembles a water filter to get clean water to drink. For this station, you will have to list out the steps and materials needed to build a water filter.

After resting, your team is recharged and ready to continue with the Mission. However, their bodies are stiff from sitting too long, and it’s not good for dealing with the fast and agile enemies. You decide to warm up first before setting off. Your patrol will have to pick 3 slips of paper and do the PT listed on the paper.

Reflection from a Year 1

When we started the station games at station 1, we had to find 10 post it notes around the classroom. The seniors hid it really well, there was even one piece in between tables. The notes we saw had trekking signs on them, one of them representing “one fine day”. Only the Year 2 seniors were familiar with them. We were ashamed as we were reminded to revise our Guides notes. Although we did, we still couldn’t decipher any of the signs. In future, we have to improve our memory and revise the Guides notes more frequently. Next, we had to list the materials and instructions on how to make a water filter for a scenario. However, we were not entirely sure of the steps. Even as the seniors showed us the instruction sheet, we were not familiar with the knots needed. We were reminded that we should be familiar with gadgets such as the water filter. Last but not least, we also had Physical Training where we did jumping jacks, leg raise and running. This helped to boost our patrol morale as well as our health. All in all, I really enjoyed this station and will definitely better familiarise myself with the trekking signs and gadgets.

Reflection from a Year 2

In station 1, I learnt a lot of things like how to build a water filter and that I needed to know my trekking signs better. As Year 2s, we should also include the Year 1s more as they may be confused with what we are doing, and we as a patrol needed to be more bonded in order to know each other better. We should also revise the Guides notes on the water filter as we were not very clear on how it should be built, and also know the other types of water filters. For Physical Training, we could have done better by putting in more effort and waiting for those who need it, and we need to make sure everyone is alright before continuing on. However, my patrol cheered a lot which helped to boost our patrol’s morale.

Station 2: Guides Code, Word Pocket with a Compass and Riddles

Although your team has spent hours searching for clues on the whereabouts of the prisoners, your efforts were futile. Suddenly, one of your teammates chanced upon some clues left by the prisoner. However, it was written in an ancient language, which resembles Petroglyph. Your job is to find all the 5 post-its and decipher what the secret message is, but do be wary of your surroundings too! Having deciphered the coded message, you infiltrate the enemy base, only to be caught in a trap. You realise that the enemies had expected your arrival, and trapped you in a room. The only way out is to find the word pockets and solve the puzzle. The key in this station has been found! You unlock the lock and see a door ahead. The only thing that lies between you and freedom is a bunch of riddles set as a backup security system in the room. Only by solving the riddles can you open the lock and escape.

Reflection from a Year 1

For station 2, regarding the guides code, I felt that I could have familiarised more with the different symbols. I found the code for each letter quite easy to understand and remember. However, the symbols for the various actions, I could have studied it more thoroughly prior to the 集合 so that I could remember it better. During the 集合, I could have 报时 and cheered more frequently aside from being fixated on the task itself. I also feel that I could have looked through the way to use the compass more thoroughly. However, I found this station very meaningful and it was different from what we usually did.

Reflection from a Year 2

For this 集合, I feel like I could have revised the Guides code more. Although I am aware of how to read Guides code, I’m not very efficient in doing so. It takes me a while to decipher the code and thus wastes time that could be used for other activities. The word pocket was an interesting activity and I enjoyed it. I think we should have focused more on what the senior had said and only opened the pockets with the words in it instead of blindly opening the others. This would have helped us to proceed with the activity faster and more efficiently. I think I should have known clearly how to read a compass and could have finished the activity under the time given if I had known how to do so. Now I am clear of how to read it and will definitely be able to next time. The riddles were enjoyable as well as I enjoy doing riddles. We were able to solve most of them but some of them were trickier. Overall, this was a beneficial 集合.

Station 3: Raffia String Navigation and First-Aid

While you are finding clues to where your captive friends are, you see a few injured soldiers lying on the floor. Upon closer inspection, you realise that they are soldiers of the Allied forces. You rush forward to help them, but almost gets caught in a trap. The bushes of the forest are dense, so your team will have to navigate through the traps slowly.

The injured soldiers are seriously wounded and in need of help! Your team and you are to quickly apply the first aid skills you’ve learnt during training and save your comrades.

Reflection from a Year 1

We felt that the third station was one that really helped to bond us together as a patrol, improve our communication skills and revise our first aid skills. Performing the first aid skills that we have learnt on our patrol mates also allowed us to apply what we read in real life. It was initially a bit difficult to pass through the rafia string maze with one leg tied together with another member of the patrol. However, with some coordination and communication, we managed to finish the race quickly and get through the maze without touching any of the raffia strings. Through the first aid skills training, we found out that we were not so familiar with our first aid skills. Therefore we should and will revise the skills at home with our guides notes. Lastly, we hope that we will be able to improve our first aid skills after much practice at the next training and we hope that we can have more opportunities to apply these skills during the next few 集合s. We also realised the importance of communication as a patrol as this would allow us to complete tasks more efficiently.

Reflection from a Year 2

This station allowed us to bond with our patrol mates and juniors and interact with them more. Initially, it was very hard to move after we tied our legs together with 白绳 and we could not get through the raffia string maze easily. The maze looked extremely complicated and we were afraid that we could not make it through smoothly. However, through the course of the maze, we opened up to each other more and communicated with each other, such as counting and telling each other when to lift our legs up. Fortunately, all of us managed to make it through the maze and we were very happy. I think we learnt the importance of teamwork and coordination. If we were not willing to work together, we would not have finished the maze. Even after we got through the maze, we helped each other to untie the 白绳. For the first-aid portion, we tried our best to perform the first-aid and teach our year 1s. Unfortunately, we did not revise the guides notes well and tied some of the bandages wrongly. This station allowed us to revise our first-aid skills and helped us familiarise with it more so that we can better teach our Year 1s. It was also the first time in a while that we practiced our first-aid skills, so we did not perform very well.  Hence, we hope that we can improve our first-aid skills in the future 集合s.

Patrol Corner

This was a time where we reflect on what we have done well and what are some points of improvement to note for the future 集合s.

Reflection from a Year 2

During patrol corner, our seniors talked to us about our activities during 集合. During 集合, we had station games and creative gadgeting. For station games, our seniors commented that in general, my patrol was quite familiar with the trekking signs and could solve the riddles quite easily. However, we had to brush up on our knowledge of first aid as most of us were not very familiar with the standard bandaging methods. We also could have studied the structures used when hiking in the wild like water filters. For creative gadgeting, our seniors commented that we should have a greater sense of urgency and be more alert to our surroundings. Our seniors also commended us on the fact that during creative gadgeting, we stepped out to look at the bigger picture and thought of a concrete plan before starting to build the structure. I feel that this is important as by having a plan, we could build the structure more easily without having to redo things because we tied it wrongly.

We hope that everyone has learnt something new from this 集合 and bonded well with one another!

Skills Training, 30 October 2020

Hi Guides!

During today’s 集合, we had mass change, built a Kitchen Table for pioneering and an Emergency Shelter and a Flagpole for gadgeting!

Mass Change

This is the Year 1s first time having mass change! Hence, this is a good chance for the Year 2s to teach them on how to mass change into their 全制. At the same time, the Year 2s also practice on improving their sense of urgency during this mass change.

Reflection from a Year 1

It was our first time doing mass change in Girl Guides. Mass change required all of us to increase our sense of urgency as we were rushed to change from our PE attires to our 制服. Although we didn’t do very well on our first try, we improved on the second one. This also helped our patrol to get closer as the seniors helped us with our 制服 and we’re very thankful for that. It also helped us become more familiar with our 制服 and how to wear it. I think we could have done better by being more aware of the time given and worked faster. Overall, mass change has taught me to have a better sense of urgency and also allowed me to bond with my patrolmates. Hence, I think this activity was both fulfilling and enriching.

Reflection from a Year 2

During this 集合, we had mass change. For the Year 2s, we had not done it in a very long while and it was the Year 1s first mass change. When we changed from PE attire to 全制, we took a really long time and 过时 by a lot. There was a lot of room for improvements. We did not really have a sense of urgency, especially when going up the stairs. We could have had better time management and worked faster. As Year 2s, we should have ensured that the Year 1s 全制 were up to standard. However, one good thing was that our patrol constantly helped and looked out for one another regardless of the situation. When changing back to PE attire from 全制, everyone changed much faster. The process was more organised. Time extension was also asked on time. We will definitely do our best the next time round and have a better sense of urgency.

Pioneering

This was the Year 1s first time trying out pioneering. This activity of building a Kitchen Table would allow them to learn about the basics of pioneering as well as to tie the standard structure. It serves as a revision for the Year 2s as well.

Reflection from a Year 1

It was our first time using spars to build a Kitchen Table. During pioneering, we got to use our lashes that we had learnt and we also learnt how to build a kitchen table with the help of our seniors. When building our kitchen table, we learnt to have better teamwork and communication among the patrol to ensure quick and smooth building of the structure. We helped each other to carry the spars from one place to another as they were heavy. We also learnt how to have better time management as we did not manage to complete the structure in the given time. However, we still got to learn from our mistakes like not measuring the breadth of the table before securing the tripod. All in all, we all had fun and bonded with one another during this activity while learning something new.

Reflection from a Year 2

During this pioneering session, we managed to recap on how to build the Kitchen Table such as what are the different 木 and logistics required. As we did not have a physical 集合 in such a long time, we also managed to recap on our basic lashes such as the square lash and the tripod. This was also a good opportunity for us to guide our Year 1s by teaching them the basic lashes and introducing the Kitchen Table structure to them. In addition, this pioneering activity has also trained our sense of urgency as we had to work fast and efficiently in order to complete our structure. Hence, it is also essential to constantly 报时 and cheer to keep track of time and boost our morale such that we are more motivated to complete the structure together.

Gadgeting

It has been a long time since the Year 1s and Year 2s did gadgeting. Hence, this would be a good opportunity for them to revise their lashes by building an Emergency Shelter and a Flagpole.

Reflection from a Year 1

For gadgeting, I think I could have done better in multiple areas. Firstly, when we were building the Flagpole and Emergency Shelter, I think that I could have had a better sense of urgency when we were setting the Flagpole up. This is because I feel that I could have moved faster and done things more efficiently. Secondly, I feel that I could have 报时 more often so that we could have had a better gauge of the time left and there would be a better estimate of what would be needed to be done, such that it would be complete. However, that being said, I did learn how to set up the Flagpole and Emergency Shelter and also learnt how to tie the respective knots to secure the structures.

Reflection from a Year 2

As a year 2, I realised that I still was not sure on how to build a Flagpole so I did not know how to start or what to ask the Year 1s to help with, having been put in charge of building the Flagpole instead of the emergency shelter. Fortunately, I had the help of my Year 3 seniors and I soon understood how the structure should be built. However, not knowing how to build the structure took up a lot of our time which led to us not being able to complete the structure on time. I learnt from this gadgeting session that I need to make sure I know how to build the standard structures in order to save time and lead my Year 1s well. I also learnt that I should have a greater sense of urgency and take note of the necessary points in building a Flagpole. Overall, this gadgeting session was really a mind opening and enriching one.

We hope everyone managed to take away something from this 集合 and revised on their lashes!

Skills Training, 29 October 2020

Hello Guides!

This was our first physical 集合 in 7 months. We had an inspection, lash training, patrol corner and played a game as well!

Inspection

This inspection was to refamiliarise the Year 1s and Year 2s with inspection after not doing it for 7 months. Additionally, inspection helps to promote communication within the patrols and instil a sense of urgency in the Year 1s in preparation for the Annual Training Camp.

Reflection from a Year 1

Through the inspection we had during Thursday's CCA, I felt that I had learnt many new things during this session. In the first inspection which was involving Year 2s, I got to observe how an inspection was carried out and how the Year 2s communicated with each other. During the inspection where we split into two groups within a patrol, I learnt about the names of some of the items included in the 配备 with the help and guidance of the Year 2s. When it was time for the Year 1s to do it by ourselves, I did not feel very confident as I was not very sure of the arrangements of the items especially when the Year 2s were not allowed to help us with the packing of the logistics. When the Year 3s demonstrated how to do a proper inspection, I was surprised at how fast they did it and thought that I should learn from them to be as good in the future. In addition, I have also learnt that we should take care of our logistics and manpower.

Reflection from a Year 2

I feel that the inspection on Thursday was a good opportunity for us, the Year 2s, to teach

the Year 1s what is expected of a standard inspection. It was only during that 集合 did we realise that the Year 1s were unsure of how to ask for our manpower or logistics back when they have been kapped. Therefore, through the inspection during Friday’s 集合, we got the chance to teach the Year 1s how they should ask for the kapped logistics back, as well as the importance of being vigilant during the inspection. Additionally, we were tasked to take turns and to work in different groups for our various inspections. While one group carries out their inspection, the other groups can learn from the group that is currently working on the inspection layout. This has allowed me to learn from not only my own group’s mistakes but from the other groups’ mistakes too. Thus, the inspection carried out during Friday’s 集合 has been a great learning experience for me.

Lash Training

The Year 1s and Year 2s were given standard timings to follow while tying a square lash, diagonal lash, A-架, tripod and quadpod. During this time, the Year 1s can clarify any doubts they have as they are still not very familiar with some of the structures yet.

Reflection from a Year 1

Due to the Covid-19 situation we were unable to practice our lashes with our patrol and the real 白绳 and 木 for a few months, we were not so used to tying tight lashes as there was still some difference between the real experience and the small scaled one with the sticks and strings. However, we still enjoyed the lash training. We were not only able to revise on our lashes and also refreshed our memory, we also got to bond closer with our patrol mates. This is so as they encouraged us along whenever we faced a problem in tying a lash. After this lash training, we were also able to improve on our lashes by finding out what we can do better when tying our lashes after receiving feedback from our seniors. Besides improving on the amount of time we take to tie our lashes and its tightness, I think that we can have a better sense of urgency when tying the lashes. Lastly, I look forward to the next lash training!

Reflection from a Year 2

This lash training helped us to revise the lashes as we were unable to practice tying the proper lashes as we used sticks and strings during online CCA. I was happy that we can finally practice the lashes properly and guide our juniors along as they have not experienced many physical 集合 sessions. Hence, they might have forgotten about how to tie the tight and standard lashes. We enjoyed this session very much as we could interact physically with our seniors and juniors. As we did not have physical 集合 for a long time, we did not have a sense of urgency and did not 报时 and cheer much. I hope that together as a 团 we can improve on these to have a better sense of urgency and boost morale. I think that we also need to improve on the tightness of our lashes as our lashes are still not up to standard. I hope that we can become better role models to our juniors by improving in future 集合s. Overall, this lash training was very enjoyable and helped us practice our lashes so that we were able to better teach the Year 1s.

Patrol Corner

This is a time where patrol members can bond with one another to become closer and share their thoughts on the day’s 集合.

Reflection from a Year 2

During patrol corner, we sat down in a circle and our seniors asked us a few questions, “how do you think you could have done better”, “what do you think you did well” and “what do you think of this whole 集合”. These questions got me thinking and reflecting on what we had done for 集合 that day. Upon thinking, I realised that we had many areas for improvement in order to do better for the next 集合. I think that patrol corner has helped us to bond as a patrol by sitting down and talking. At first, patrol corners were awkward as we did not know each other very well. We used to simply sit down and remain silent until someone starts to talk. However, for the recent patrol corner, we have started to become more comfortable with sharing our thoughts and patrol corner became a great time to interact with our patrol mates.

Charades

During this game of charades, the Year 1s and Year 2s are given a word in which they have to act out while the other patrol members guess the word. This promotes communication and bonding among the patrol and also helps the Year 1s better familiarise themselves with the different Girl Guides terms.

Reflection from a Year 1

We had a fun time playing charades on Thursday because it was less awkward than the first time we played it during the first few 集合s as we really became closer over the year so we really enjoyed it. It tested our knowledge of Girl Guides as we had to guess the items or activities and the fact that we had to act it out requires a certain level of understanding as well. Although we thoroughly liked the game, we think it could have been even more fun if everyone was engaged in it. However, the game might not have been carried out as smoothly because it was the end of the day and most of us were very tired. Overall, we had fun playing the game and it helped us to revise some of the Girl Guides terms.

Reflection from a Year 2

At the end of the patrol corner, we played charades. We had to guess a few Girl Guides terms from one person's actions. For the terms that the Year 1s did not understand, the Year 2s would explain them. Since the Year 1s are relatively new to Girl Guides in the sense that they have not participated in many physical 集合s, I think this is a meaningful way to expose them to various new guiding terms. I found this activity very fun and educational as it could help the Year 1s learn the various terms in Girl Guides and help them remember these terms better as they will learn it through a fun game. However, I feel that this activity could have gone much smoother if we were not so awkward with each other. Since we had not had a physical 集合 since February, I feel that it is understandable that this happened. However I hope that through more 集合s, we will get closer.

We hope that through this week’s 集合, everyone had lots of fun and learnt something new!
