Annual Traning Camp, 10th-12th November

 Hi Guides!

Recently, we had our Annual Training Camp (ATC) from 10th to 12th November. The theme of this year's ATC was Marvel: There is a hero in all of us. During this 3 Day and 2 Nights camp, the Year 1s and 2s (Trainees), would go through many activities such as Physical Training (PT), Obstacle Journey (OJ), Night Games and many more! Moreover, the trainees had been reshuffled and split into 6 new patrols, with new patrol members, with whom they began their journey through ATC. Besides having to readjust to their new patrols and bond with their new patrol mates, the trainees met with countless obstacles along the way. However, they managed to push through and emerge as heroes. :) Hence, the Year 3s (Counsellors), hope that through this ATC, the trainees have improved on their soft skills and hard skills, as well as physical and mental strength.

Here are the new patrols and their respective patrol names, which are all in line with the theme of ATC:
P1 Iron Lady
P2 Mystic
P3 X-Men
P4 Marvelus
P5 Thor
P6 Avengers

Day 1
Firstly, the trainees and counsellors had to 集合 in the foyer with all the necessary logistics. Thereafter, some began loading the logistics up into the truck whilst the others had patrol corner to set their patrol and individual goals. After everything was loading into the truck, everyone proceeded to Camp Christine. Upon arriving at Camp Christine, the Guides had to unload all their logistics and then 集合 before Camp Development Part 1.

Camp D Part 1 & 2
For Camp Development Part 1, the trainees had around 2h to build the necessary structures such as the emergency shelters, gadget to hold banner, patrol flagpole and Camp Christine tents. The weather was unpredictable, which hindered the progress of the trainees'. Despite this, they continued to build the structures and succeeded at the end of Camp D Part 1. While the trainees were busy with their structures, the counsellors were also busy with their own Camp Christine Tents and the 团旗. Fortunately, these structures were also completed swiftly and within the allocated time.

Building of the 团旗

Reflections from a Year 1...
To be honest, we were indeed very slow at the start of part one. It was quite confusing then, because the location of our emergency shelter was not confirmed and standardized. Every patrol was either busy with building it in their own way or trying hard to figure out the camp Christine tent. Thus, there was a lack of communication among all the patrols.

Reflections from a Year 1...
While the Year 1s in my patrol worked on the emergency shelter, the Year 2s quickly started on the Camp Christine tent. Although this may seem as a foolproof plan to not 过时, however, we had a hard time with the emergency shelter as it couldn't stand or was placed at a different location than the other patrols so we had to shift it again. As for the Camp Christine tent, many of us were unsure of how to raise it so we asked for help from the seniors. In the future, we can be better prepared.

Reflections from a Year 2...
I think I could have involved myself more during Camp-D part 1, although I was neither the PL nor PS. Perhaps, because it was the start of the camp, many patrols did not have a high morale and the sense of urgency lacked in many. I should have familiarised myself more with the building of Camp Christine Tent as if I had done so, we wouldn't have been that lost. However, it was a fortunate thing that most patrols managed to meet the requirements for Camp-D Part 1.

After a tiring Camp D Part 1, the Guides got some rest during lunch, prior to the next part of Camp D. During this part of Camp D, the trainees touched up on the structures from Camp D Part 1 and had to complete a few more structures in Part 2, such as their Kitchen Shelters, Shoe Racks, 8- men tents and Fire Altars. At times, the trainees had very low morale and sense of urgency but with reminders and encouragements from their patrol counsellors, the trainees succeeded in completing the structures.

Reflections from a Year 1...
We learnt that we should identify the mistakes if any and change them, and subsequently, avoid making the same mistakes again. However, we ended up making the same mistakes, which cost us a lot of time.

Reflections from a Year 2...
Even though the sense of urgency was still not quite there, we managed to complete everything according to the timeline because we did the 8- men tent and Kitchen Shelter concurrently. The 8-men tent took a little longer than it should have to build. One thing was probably the lack of man power but I believed that we should have put in more effort to do things faster. The lack of communication also resulted in the delays. I've learnt to prioritise things according to the situation so as to avoid the wastage of time.

Reflections from a Year 2...
I think for Camp-D part 2, our morale could have been much better. If we were more sure of our things, we would have saved a lot of time from discussions. Also, our lashes can still be further improved as some of our structures were quite shaky.

Surprise Inspection
After Camp D Part 2, the Guides were asked to 集合 before they were told that there would be a surprise inspection. For the first part of the inspection, the trainees had to mass change into Guides Uniform within 4 min. However, due to the chaos, the trainees were slowed down and exceeded the allocated timing. As a result, they had to mass change back into their PE Attire within 4 min. Thereafter, they were told to mass change back into their Guides Uniform within 4 min for the inspection. After that, the trainees had to lay out their personal logistics for the first time according to the layout they had prepared. The trainees did not meet the time requirement and had to pack up everything before relaying their personal logistics again. Overall, the purpose of this surprise inspection was to reinforce the Guides motto of "Be Prepared" and to ensure that the trainees had a better sense of urgency. After the inspection ended, the trainees were given 15 min to sort out all their personal logistics.

Reflections from a Year 1...
From this inspection, I really understood that sometimes we need to know how to react to an unexpected situation fast enough so that we can cope with the sudden change. I also learnt that we should not have too many concerns (e.g. regarding the neatness of our personal logistics when packing up) during inspection as time is really important for inspection.

Reflections from a Year 1...
We did not help the others when we finished and we also did not help the others to pack or pick up the stuff on the floor that is not ours. From this, I have learnt to help the others in the company since we were all doing the inspection together. I think the Year 2s were also quite stressed and we, as Year 1s, should have helped them by keeping quiet and cooperating with them and following their instructions.

Reflections from a Year 1...
As for the surprise inspection, the mass change was okay but the inspection situation was extremely chaotic. Many people were shouting and even after we 过时-ed, nobody asked for time extension. We should have all 计时-ed and 报时-ed constantly so that we will not 过时 easily.

Reflections from a Year 2...
The surprise inspection caught many of us quite unprepared. Luckily, almost everyone memorised the layout and knew how to organise their things nicely, Although the Year 1s lost quite a few bags of items, they managed to sort it out in the rest time given, which was very beneficial. I think I could have stepped up more during the surprise inspection. We could have communicated more with the Year 1s and guided them along as they were very scared and lost. Also, we could have neatened our layout more.

Reflections from a Year 2...
Even though we memorised the layout, the whole situation was extremely chaotic. Our ponchos were not compact and not aligned. There were hardly any clear distinctions between each patrol and this made the entire olave hall very messy. I was the PL for the inspection. The counsellors kept saying that they could not hear my voice so I tried to speak up and walk around my patrol to make sure everything was okay. I think we should have done better and unpreparedness is not an excuse because as guides, we should always BE PREPARED!

Physical Training
The purpose of this activity was to train the trainees on their physical and mental strength, as well as to encourage patrol bonding since these patrols were to work together for the next few days.

Storyline: In the city of Manhattan, Spider-man fights villains everyday to protect the citizens. He needs your help to overcome the forces of evil and keep safe those that are dear to him. Through completing a series of physical activities, your patrol can accumulate enough power to defeat the enemies.

Unfortunately, due to the poor weather, the Physical Training had to be cut short. Most patrols were only able to attempt 4 stations instead of the proposed 5 stations.

Station 1 (Behind Olave Hall)
Storyline: Your patrol has come face to face with Doctor Octopus. In order to avoid his swishing tentacles, you have to do as many kallang wave pumpings as possible in 8 minutes. The amount of pumpings you do will determine the extent of damage to yourself which will result in the level of difficulty of the next part. The number of kallang wave pumpings varied according to the different patrol sizes and were adjusted accordingly by the station masters.

After kallang wave pumpings (less than expected number):
Your patrol is now granted with temporary immunity against Doctor Octopus. However, you have incurred the wrath of Doctor Octopus and hence your patrol will have to do 3 minutes 站马 with your own logistics to avoid his tentacles and protect your logistics from him. Because you have not completed the expected amount of kallang wave pumpings, your patrol will have to elevate additional 2 黄木, 3 红木 and 2 青木, which represents the extra burden you have incurred from your damage.

After kallang wave pumpings (more than/equals to expected number):
Your patrol is now granted with temporary immunity against Doctor Octopus. However, you have incurred the wrath of Doctor Octopus and hence your patrol will have to do 3 minutes 站马 with your own logistics to avoid his tentacles and protect your logistics from him. Luckily for you, since you have completed the expected amount of kallang wave pumpings, you have suffered less damage. Hence, your patrol will have lesser logistics to elevate. You will have to do 3 minutes 站马 to keep your own logistics plus 2 红木 and 2 青木 off the sand on the ground.

Reflections from a Year 1...
I did not think I could persevere on for this long but I am proud that my patrol and I did, cheering and encouraging each other to not give up.

Reflections from a Year 2...
Once we reached the target we counted really loudly as we felt a sense of accomplishment upon us as we hit each of our targets.

Station 2 (Corridor beside Pax Lodge)
Storyline: A fire has broken out at the field surrounding your patrol, no wonder your spidey senses have been tingling. To save your patrol, everyone has to work a series of exercises in order to put out the fire and save yourselves from getting burnt alive. Each time, only 2 of you are allowed to go upstairs to get a certain amount of water to put out the fire. You are to wheelbarrow across to the staircase and run up to pump 10 for a cup of water each. When you get back down, lunge across back to your patrol as soon as possible, or the cups of water may leak dry before you use them! The rest of the patrol is to alternate between leg raise, boys’ style pumping position, 站马 and girls style position. You better hurry before the fire completely burns you out in 12 minutes! Each of you must go up at least once and you are allowed to run up the staircase portion of the corridor.

Reflections from a Year 1...
It was not easy as the PT included boys-style pumping position, but even so we tried our best to continue on without falling out.

Station 3 (Inside Olave Hall)
Storyline: Spider- man has entered a secret room that contains the Green Goblin’s secret equipment and to obtain these, you will have to commando crawl across the length of Olave Hall, with the person crawling joining those 顶 Boys style at the end, under their patrol members who will be doing 顶 Boys’ Style until y’all travel across the length of Olave hall twice. Subsequently, you will have to caterpillar crawl for the other half of the perimeter of Olave Hall. These will be done in order to avoid the security lasers. Lastly, you will have to do 15 star jumps and 15 jumping jacks to reach for the secret lock. Time is of essence! You only have 11 min to complete everything. Good luck!

Reflections from a Year 1...
This station was very tiring and many of us kua-ed when we had to 顶 boy’s style for our patrol mates to commando crawl through. Many of us were very tired and unfortunately we were not able to complete the whole station in the time limit given. I learnt that we can try harder to pia as a patrol and work faster to complete the station.

Station 4 (Inside Our Cabana)
Storyline: Electrode is drawing electricity from the circuit in his body and he is out on a mission to electric shock innocent victims around New York. Your patrol together will have to help spiderman to destroy the electric circuit that supplies electricity to electrode by completing either a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line on the tic tac toe circuit board to save the city and its citizens.

Reflections from a Year 1...
It was rather interesting as we were motivated to earn those ‘circles’ and fill up the tic tac toe boxes, and it was also heartening to see the whole patrol pia together to complete the given PT quickly. Our patrol morale was especially high during this station as well.

Reflections from a Year 2...
This station is a very good example to prove that we could do stuff better after accomplishments we achieved as we wanted to prove to people that our patrol could do it and to make our counsellors proud of us. When we saw the smiles on our counsellors' faces upong seeing the results, it was all worth it.

Station 5 (Pax Lodge)
Storyline: You have incurred the wrath of Doctor Octopus and he has invaded your territory to attack your patrol. As Spider-Man, you guys have to escape from Doctor Octopus to prevent any patrol members from getting hurt. Y’all would have to jump from building to building to run from Doctor Octopus. However, with a combined effort from the whole patrol, Doctor Octopus can be defeated!

For every 8 pumpings your patrol does, one out of eight of Doctor Octopus’ arms will be destroyed! Hence, your patrol would have to do 8 pumpings in a row while the last person frog jumps the length of this lodge and run back to join the patrol (points out to them). Y’all will have to complete as many sets as possible within a time limit of 10 minutes. Y’all will have to at least complete 8 sets, but y’all can aim to achieve higher.

Reflections from a Year 1...
We tried our best to pia even when we were all very tired.

Reflections from a Year 2...
My legs were numb and I fell down after one jump but my counsellor was there to encourage me to continue when I felt so bad.

Station 6 (Walkway between Pax Lodge and Sangam)
Storyline: The mutated lizard, Dr Connor, has released a gaseous cloud containing a mutation serum that will turn all humans into lizards like him

In order to reach the top of the tower to stop Dr Connor, you would have to caterpillar walk, allowing you to stay low and avoid breathing in the gaseous cloud. At the same time, you need to collect the green water balloons along the way.

Before you can switch and replace the mutation serum with an antidote, you have to first boost your immunity and make yourselves unaffected by the gaseous cloud by doing a 2 minute leg raise. During the leg raise, the water balloon must be balanced on your legs for 2 minutes. Every time a balloon drops, the patrol will incur a penalty of 5 burpees. Pick up the balloon and continue when it drops. You have a total of 6 minutes to do this. 集合 to the station masters at the walkway after you have done so.

Reflections from a Year 1...
This station was quite interesting and my patrol persevered through all the PT, so I am really proud of our efforts and how well we bonded by encouraging one another constantly.

Overall reflections
Overall reflections from a Year 1...
Although some stations were tough, my patrol gave our best and pia-ed all the way, resulting in placing top 3 for PT. Overall, I felt that my patrol and I fared well for this PT though sometimes I could have pia-ed longer and not give up that easily as I was not doing the PT alone, but together with everyone else, who were probably feeling as tired as I was.

Overall reflections from a Year 2...
We were happy with the standards we gave and bonded better as a patrol though this "thick and thin". Overall, I think that I was very happy with my performance as I put in my best and didn't fall out or burden my patrol. We all did well together and was determined until the end. We were generally proud of ourselves when we saw our scores. I'm also really grateful for my patrol! :)

Night Games

After PT ended, the Guides had some time to rest, eat and wash up before Night Games commenced. The purpose of Night Games was to build up trust and teamwork between patrol members, allow guides to be mentally prepared at all times and also to allow Guides to work with one another throughout the company.

During each station, the trainees were required to complete obstacles or find clues in order to obtain a key. However, points were allocated according to the performance of the patrols but nevertheless, no matter how many points they achieved, the key was given to them still as it was required in the last activity.

In the last activity, each patrol obtained 6 keys. However, a piece of paper with 6 different key shapes (locks) were given per patrol but the keys that were obtained did not fit exactly to the ones on the paper. Hence, trainees were supposed to communicate with the other patrols in order to exchange keys to fit all the keys to their locks in time. This tested the communication skills between the patrols in the company.

Station 1: The Shed
Station 2: Main toilet (Last 2 doors)
Station 3: Pax Lodge
Station 4: Olave Hall
Station 5: Our cabana
Station 6: Main toilet (First 2 doors)

Station 1
The trainees were required to watch a scenario acted out by the people. After that, they had to drink the water in the bottle given to us by the station masters. Subsequently, they had to find the key hidden somewhere around that area, without the aid of any torch.

Reflections from a Year 1...
I found this station rather interesting. At first, we had no idea where the key was hidden as we didn’t notice the person laying there. After the people hinted us, we finally got it.

Station 2
The station mimicked a point in the maze where the trainees stumbled across 2 villains and a prisoner they had in captive. The villains pretended to be kind and welcoming, but in fact wanted to trick them into revealing where they were going and trap them in the maze forever. The prisoner dropped hints and warnings in order to help the trainees find the key to escape the maze and flee the villains. Trainees were under pressure to answer a riddle in order to leave the maze. The trainees could only use one torch per patrol when reading the riddles.

Riddle 1:
Imagine you are in a dark room. How do you get out?
Answer: Stop imagining

Riddle 2:
If I have it, I don’t share it. If I share it, I don’t have it. What is it?
Answer: A Secret.

Riddle 3:
I'm your follower in the light,
Yet I'm invisible in the night
At various sizes I appear
I won't harm you, have no fear
What am I?
Answer: Shadow

Reflections from a Year 1...
The person told us to trust her but we were very hesitant hence we had a hard time trying to find the key.

Reflections from a Year 1...
This station was rather terrifying for me because the “ghosts” kept trying to keep us with them and prevent us from leaving.

Station 3
Trainees needed to dig into 6 buckets to find the keys, but there was only 1 correct key and 2 dummy keys. Simultaneously, trainees needed to switch off the 3 torchlights after they solved the 3 obstacles respective to the torchlights (which provide clues to where the correct key is located.)

The clues were pretty obvious and hard to miss, but if the trainees had failed to choose the correct key, they lost points but the correct key was still given to them. (The correct key is golden in colour while the dummy keys are either silver or of another colour.)

● Bucket 1: Ice Water
● Bucket 2: Slime + water
● Bucket 3: Hair Extension + water (Dummy key)
● Bucket 4: sponge (Correct key)
● Bucket 5: Cotton wool + water
● Bucket 6: Sand + water (Dummy key)

● Torchlight 1 - Guides code: Teamwork will stop me (“Me” as in Electro)
● Torchlight 2 - Electro’s riddle: I have holes in my top and bottom, my left and right, and in the middle. But I still hold water. What am I? (Answer: Sponge. The bucket with sponge is where the key lies.)
● Torchlight 3- Puzzle: (Piece together an image of a lightning bolt and water as seen below)

Station 4
In this station, mystique, who was hunted by the patrol, had transformed into someone else to hide her identity. Although there appeared to be two of the same person, there were actually different features that distinguished the real person and mystique. The patrols’ goal was to guess who was mystique out of the 2 Year 3s who pretended to be the two similar people that mystique transformed into. The station began with the 2 Year 3s confusing the patrol and insisting that both of them were mystique, by screaming something along the lines of “choose me!” etc. At the same time, the patrol was supposed to go around the hall looking for slips of paper with clues written in guides code on them.

Reflections from a Year 1...
We initially chose the correct person, but we hesitated and changed our decision afterwards. I felt very disappointed as we had made a wrong choice.

Reflections from a Year 2...
Because of the lack of communication, our patrol did not really use the torchlight well because as we were finding, I could not really see the pieces of paper because the light was not shining at the direction I was looking in. I think my patrol could have been better if we could be more decisive and communicated better.

Station 5
This station was based on Man-wolf, the bloodthirsty marvel character. Each patrol that entered faced the slave who informed them about a trapped explorer in the kitchen and warned them about the man-wolf as well. The patrol had to get past the man-wolf, who tried to kup people, and face the guard at the door of the kitchen. The guard made the patrol do something before they could enter the kitchen. Once the patrol entered the kitchen, they had to save the trapped explorer before the man-wolf woke from his slumber and ate up the explorer.

The 4 spoons

Reflections from a Year 1...
I find this station quite easy as it was more straightforward than the rest. Hence, we could finish this station quite easily.

Reflections from a Year 1...
This station served as an introduction to night games to me because it was our first station. I was extremely afraid of being pulled away from my patrol.

Reflections from a Year 2...
I felt that the station was relatively well planned because it was quite scary and it was so smart to place the spoon beside the girl.

Station 6
The patrol had to enter the sink area next to the toilets. The storyline was read to the patrol and stations masters instructed one patrol member to enter the toilet at once to retrieve coins. When one patrol member entered the toilet, two station masters, hiding in the toilet, would walk out to hint to the patrol member to only pick up the magnetic steel coins by saying “Not all is magnetic, he who has the power to kill has the power of magnetism. One colour is key.”. The patrol member could only bring back one coin at once and the patrol waiting at the sink area was expected to decipher the code on the coin while another patrol member entered the toilet to retrieve another coin. Once all the coins were retrieved, or once the time limit was up, the patrol was be given a little more time to decipher the word and rearrange the words to form a sentence. If the patrol managed to retrieve the correct coins, one patrol member had to retrieve the key out of a bucket of water. If they did not manage to retrieve the correct coins, the patrol member had to retrieve the key from a bucket of a mixture of cornstarch and water.

Guides code on coins:
The silver (steel) coins will each have a letter written in guides code on it, spelling out the word “S U P E R H E R O”.
The gold (non-magnetic) coins will each have a letter written in guides code on it, spelling out the word “V I L L A I N”.

Reflections from a Year 1...
This station was relatively less frightening to me as I did not come into contact with many “ghosts”, but when we did, one of them tried to “kup” our counselor, but we held on to her and prevented her from being taken away, and I was very happy that we took good care of our counsellor.

Overall reflections
Overall reflections from a Year 1...
I was initially very afraid of this particular activity despite my seniors assuring me all the time. Being afraid of ghosts and darkness, my fear towards this activity only grew, and I almost screamed many times but I controlled myself and tried to contain my fear. Gradually, I managed to overcome my fears and the night games went by smoothly afterwards.

Overall reflections from a Year 1...
The night games was really fun and there was so much effort put into it. Each station was thrilling and exciting as we also had to solve a puzzle while being distracted by our counsellors. Night games practises your communication as a patrol as during the night, it may be too dark for anyone to see anything so teamwork is crucial in fulfilling your objectives. I think that night games may test your courage especially for those who are afraid of horror content and it also helps your patrol to stick together always and know the importance of being aware of your teammates. I feel that my patrol did quite well as no one got “kidnapped” and we managed to fulfill all the objectives in each station. The counsellors have put in much effort to plan games like these and as entertaining each station may be, we still have to respect them and not laugh at them. The night games gave us an opportunity to work on our teamwork and communication as we always had to be aware of each other’s well-being, especially because it was during the night.

Overall reflections from a Year 2...
Night games, although confusing at times, was very fun and thrilling. Through night games, we learnt to leave no man behind and always stay together to look out for each other. This is also a test of your bravery and decision-making skills, allowing you to learn how to make decisions quickly under pressure. We had to pinpoint which instructions to believe and listen to and act accordingly. Relating this to the theme and tagline of the camp, this night games taught us to not be afraid to take risks, just like how heroes always act. This short session of night games was indeed meaningful and contains many valuable learning points.

After Night Games ended, the trainees went to sleep before the activity- packed Day 2 began.

Day 2

Morning PT
This activity marked the beginning of Day 2. During the Morning PT, the Guides were split into two groups, with P1 to P3 in the first group, and P4 to P6 in the second group. After moving to their respective locations, the trainees began their warm- up exercises. Thereafter, they were to do at least 2 sets of circuit, consisting of 4 min 顶 Boys' style, 1 min planking and 15 star jumps.

Reflections from a Year 1...
During the activity, many of us were very weary in the morning and some of us kua-ed during the PT. I learnt that we could try to cheer more to boost our morale.

After Morning PT, the Guides had breakfast, campsite check and 升旗.

Inspection
Starting Storyline: All of you have now come to your battlefield. The enemies are drawing nearer, and the Marvel Headquarters have detected a poisonous solid substance which the enemies have secretly put in random backpacks which you have brought with you. As this substance is lethal, the Headquarters require you to lay out your personal logistics again to identify and get rid of this poisonous substance. However, you will have to lay out your logistics in a special formation as ordered by the Headquarters, as this formation gives off a spell that will boost all of your immunity to the enemies’ future threats and destroy the solid substance.

The trainees had to first mass change into their Guides Uniform, and then bring their personal logistics to 集合. Afterwards, they were given 6 min to layout their personal belongings according to the surprise layout given by the ICs. Due to the lack in their sense of urgency, the trainees had to pack up and 集合, before they were broken off once again to re-lay everything.

Afterwards, regardless of whether their layouts were complete, the trainees had to 集合 before their layouts were evaluated by the counsellors.

Grading system (Counsellors):
P1&P4 –Attire
P2&P5 –Neatness and standardization
P3&P6 –Completeness

For their mistakes, the trainees had to do some forfeits, which were various sets of Physical Training. After the evaluation was completed, the trainees were given time to pack up and 集合.

Closing storyline: Well done, one and all. With the accomplishment of laying out your logistics in the correct formation, the Marvel Headquarters has confirmed the elimination of the poisonous solid substance. Also, you are all more immune to the future threats of the enemy, so good job! But remember, this hurdle might have been cleared, however many traps laid by the enemies might lie ahead of you, so always remember to be alert and Be Prepared!

After inspection ended, the trainees were given 5 min to sort out all their personal logistics.

Reflections from a Year 1...
I think that our patrol did not do very well and there is still a lot of room for improvement. Everyone was stressed out and sometimes we would forget that we were doing it as a 团, as a patrol, and not as an individual. As there were only 2 proposals, the situation was quite chaotic and it was quite difficult to catch what the speaker was saying about the lay out as everyone was making a lot of noise. In the beginning, there was slightly poor communication between the PL and the patrol and things could not be laid out properly. However I think that our patrol bonded more through the inspection as we had to help those that were more lost than some of us and also by cheering our patrol cheers and songs.

Reflections from a Year 1...
I found this inspection very chaotic and I was very lost during this inspection as I did not know what to do. The communication between all of us was very bad. A lot of us did not know where exactly we had to place the items at. As a result, we failed at our first try and we had to wrap everything in our poncho and run to 集合.

Reflections from a Year 1...
At the start, I had already begun to feel the stress weighing upon my shoulders because even the seniors had been fearing inspection since Day 1 of the camp. When we were laying out our personal logistics, it was extremely tense and I was quite lost initially because I did not know that there had been a different layout, and even when a Year 2 tried to read out the layout. In the end, even with a time extension, we did not have enough time to layout everything and we had to 集合 again, before we were broken off for a second try. Thankfully, I got back all of my items at the end of the inspection and only lost a fork in the entire activity. It was really a great experience for me, and now I know what inspections during ATC are like!

Reflections from a Year 2...
I think through this we learnt how to communicate not only within the patrols but also together as a 团 because we had to align our items not only as a patrol but also to align everything such that every patrol had their ponchos vertically aligned too. Since the layout was only given to two people, I think it would be better if the people holding the layouts could voice out more and also pass it around so that everyone would not be so confused. Also, I think as the Year 2s, we neglected the Year 1s quite a bit since we were also in a state of panic so I think we should have helped them more and helped one another instead of just minding our own stuff. Lastly, even after the inspection we were given time to re-pack our stuff to make sure that none of our stuff went missing, which I think was really good because we could get back our things on the spot as compared to last year.

Reflections from a Year 2...
As the situation was hectic and everyone was under immense pressure, we were unable to accomplish the task in time. The PLs were then required to ask for a time extension. I was a PL for inspection, and had to lead the patrol and give clear instructions to them as well as lay out my own logistics. I found this very tough as we needed to juggle between many things at a time. I had to ask the Year 1 beside me to help lay out my logistics as this would allow me to focus on reading out the layout to everyone. Although our patrol’s overall layout in the end was still very messy and incomplete, I’m sure we all learnt many things through this experience, such as how to better cope with stress, and how to deal with sudden situations.

Camp D Part 3
During Camp D Part 3, the trainees had the opportunity to touch up on all the previous structures and complete their creative gadget.

Reflections from a Year 1...
We did cheer but not as much as the other patrols did. We also need to improve on our sense of urgency but we did finish everything in the end.

Reflections from a Year 1...
From this, I really think that I need to improve my lashes a lot. Therefore, I will take my time to approach my year two seniors. I learnt that measuring is very important as it makes things neater and more pleasant in looking.

Reflections from a Year 2...
Even though we were originally given more time, it was cut back due to previous delays. Thankfully, all patrols were still able to complete their structure. We had a lot of improvisations and made relevant changes in the last minute because we realised that if we followed strictly to our proposal, the structure would be rather unstable, hence defeating the purpose altogether. We also had extra gadget poles so we decided to incorporate them as 定脚s to make our structure even more secure.I think for this part we had the highest sense of urgency and efficiency because we knew that time was rather tight. We also cheered more (:

Outdoor Cooking

After Camp D Part 3, the trainees did their Outdoor Cooking using the fire altar they had previously built in Camp D Part 2, along with the kindlings they had brought along. The purpose of this activity was to allow Guides to apply their Fire Lighting Skills, build up on communication skills to finish the task and to allow them to take a break from the more physically exhausting activities of the training camp.

Storyline: It has been a day of endless fighting and you are beyond tired, but more importantly, very very hungry. However, all the shops in your town have been forced to close down due to the fights and uprising from you and your other heroes. To fill your stomachs, you have to use whatever ingredients you have to cook 2 dishes, which are appealing and also tasty, to give yourself energy for the following missions. You will have 2 hours to cook and eat the food before your next mission will arrive.

Each patrol was required to create 2 dishes and present them to be graded on. One of the dishes had to include the vegetables, while the other could be the meat. For patrols which combined both ingredients together, they could cook another dish (noodles / rice). The food they cooked had to, in one way or another, be related to the theme of “MARVEL” and this required their creativity and for to step out of their comfort zones and attempt cooking something different from what we usually do in our normal activities.

Reflections from a Year 1...
We ate our dishes contentedly because we were proud of the fruit of our labor, and all the effort we put into cooking the dishes for our lunch. I really enjoyed the Outdoor Cooking experience and I also learnt how to sustain a fire using kindlings and the method to blow the fire too. I am glad to have a takeaway from this session of Outdoor Cooking!

Reflections from a Year 1...
I enjoyed outdoor cooking a lot. We managed to start a fire very quickly and we also sustained it throughout the whole outdoor cooking. We cooked two dishes, one was fried rice with chicken, vegetables and mushrooms as the topping. The other one was instant noodles with vegetables around it and fried potatoes as the topping. It was very delicious and I enjoyed cooking the dishes very much. After cooking, we sat down together as a patrol to eat our dishes. It was more delicious because we cooked it ourselves.

Reflections from a Year 2...
For Outdoor Cooking, we had to cook 2 dishes to be graded. Before that, we had to start a flame and get the cutlery and all the equipment washed. However, our patrol started the flame way before the washed wok or anything even came back. This resulted in a huge wastage of kindlings. Our flame was also very hard to sustain, mainly due to the twigs being wet from the rain on the previous night. A lot of smoke also came out, which made it increasingly difficult to get close to the flame to sustain it as it would cause irritance to the eyes. However, through it all, we still managed to cook up the dishes for grading as well as more to eat, and I am actually very proud of how the dishes turned out, in both taste and appearance.

Reflections from a Year 2...
Although our dish did not turn out really fantastic afterall but we tried our best to make it look good. At first the fire started off well, such that we could cook the eggs and the potatoes well but after that the fire kept going out so we had to constantly blow it. I think that we could have worked better and have alternate people to blow the fire instead of letting only one or two people to blow the fire which was really bad for the eyes. Overall the dishes we cooked were really nice to eat and OC was fun!

Obstacle Journey
After Outdoor Cooking, the trainees moved on to the Obstacle Journey. The purpose of this OJ was to put the juniors' skills to test, allow them to have opportunities to lead and give instructions clearly and to allow patrol communication and teamwork.

Overall plot:
Nick Furry, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D, a peace keeping company has called upon your patrol to form an agency called The Avengers. The Global Security is threatened by Loki and his cohorts and you, the avengers must try to stop him before it is too late. Through every station that you complete, you will be one step closer to finding Loki and keeping the peace of our world! Every hero needs to be in her costume before your adventure. So now you will have 4 min to change into your OJ kit and report for your mission.

Pre station briefing:
Before you are to begin your quest to locate Loki and destroy him, you will first require your battle equipment. Your patrol’s 配备 have been scattered around Pax Lodge, you will have to locate your 配备, decode the station location, which can be found inside your patrol’s 配备, and figure out all the locations of all the stations. You have limited time to do so. Decipher all the station locations in 15 min before Loki knows about your whereabouts. 集合back here when the locations of all the stations are decoded. Remember, you have to assemble as a team, since the battle will not be won with just one.

Pre-station activity:
Patrols to pack 配备 after outdoor cooking and surrender to the ICs. ICs will then put a zip lock bag with torn pieces of paper with 1 location in Guides code into patrol 配备 for each patrol and hide all the 配备 in different places for trainees to find. After that, trainees from each patrol will have to fit the pieces of paper together, decode the Guides code to find out one location. Thereafter, all 6 patrols will have to work together to find out all the 6 locations.

Reflections from a Year 1...
While searching for our patrol’s 配备, we found P2’s 配备, however instead of leaving it there, the Year 2s took it and passed it to P2 when we saw them. Our 配备 was similarly found by another patrol, and passed to us when all patrols met to solve the station names. This made me realize that solving the station venues was a company’s effort and we should not be overly-individualistic. Instead, we should help other patrols when they need help. After the 15 minutes we 集合-ed once again, and the OJ ICs asked different trainees from the patrols to read out the station venue to ensure that we were all clear about the station venues. We then proceeded with OJ itself.

Station 1 (Our Cabana)
Storyline: On your pursuit for Loki, you and your companions met with a storm. A few of your companions have caught a cold after being drenched by the rain. Unable to proceed on, you can only seek shelter until the rain subsides. It is also predicted that there will soon be a flood and so you have to act fast. You are now given 15 min to boil the water provided with kindlings and build a structure to elevate 5 people in the patrol including the 配备. Note that the people have to be elevated before the time limit.

For the suggested structure, a quadpod would be built. The quadpod should be tied by 8 min and all the 定脚s should be done in the next 5 min.

If the speed of the patrol is fast, animal attacks would be carried out as bonus, serving to test their survival skills knowledge and their ability to respond and react to unexpected situations. For every 2 scenarios responded correctly, an additional 0.5 mark will be awarded. They would also be asked to say out how to treat for hypothermia, and another extra 0.5 mark will be awarded if the treatment is correct.

Bee attack: cover with poncho
Boar attack: run 100m in a zig-zag motion
Bear attack: play dead
Hornet attack: cover with poncho and run 100m

Hypothermia treatment:
1. Quickly remove wet clothing and replace with warm, dry garments.
2. Casualty can be re-warmed by bathing ONLY if she’s young, fit and able to climb into the bath unaided. The water should be warm but not too hot.
3. Put casualty in bed and ensure that she is well-covered. Give her warm foods and high- energy foods like chocolate to help re-warm her.
4. Monitor and record vital signs regularly.

Reflections from a Year 1...
This station allowed me to reflect on the importance of constant 报时, so as to not 过时. I also learnt that we should take better care of our logistics, so as to prevent them from being potentially kupped by seniors and also to make decisions quickly so as to have more time to tie the structure. It was not a good start to our OJ, and we left the station with much regret, due the incompletion of the station.

Reflections from a Year 2...
Our patrol managed to think of the right structire to build, which is the quadpod but we were really slow so we did not manage to finish the structure on time. Thus, our patrol morale was quite low and we had to keep asking for time extension.

Reflections from a Year 2...
I think I could have done better as a PL, I definitely should have given my patrol mates a definite time to tie the tripod lash, because the lashes took up a lot of our time.

Reflections from a Year 2...
For the finding of water, we just took any cups of water that we saw in the surroundings without even seeing the labels on it to see if it is drinkable or not. As a result, we took he undrinkable cup of water. From this, I feel that we should be more aware of everything around us and be sure of the trekking signs and labels. As for the building of structure, we build a quadpod with 定脚, In the beginning, we were at a loss of what to do as we have never build a quadpod before. Moreover, our actions were also very slow, causing a need to ask for many time extensions. In my opinion, I think that we should work more on our lashes and tie them at a faster pace but also tightly.

Station 2 (Corridor between Pax Lodge and Our Chalet)
Storyline: Loki and his accomplices have seen you trying to enter his lair. His security system has kicked in and a poisonous gas is released. This poisonous gas has the ability to disfigure and paralyse you. It has also hindered your eyesight and blinded your entire patrol. Hence, you are required to build an emergency shelter blindfolded so as to protect yourselves from getting spotted by Loki’s guards.

Part 1
The patrol was blindfolded except for the PL and the PS, while the patrol is allowed to speak. They were instructed to build an improvised emergency shelter at the stairs near the corridor in 8 min.
At the 6th min of part one of the activity, the station masters shouted “Hornet attack” to test their ability to stay alert even in the midst of a task. The hornet attack lasted for 10-15 seconds to ensure trainees had sufficient time to complete the 2 emergency shelters.

Part 2
For part 2 of this station, the patrol was required to do a series of Physical Training along the corridor of “Our Chalet”. They did 3 sets of physical training in total over a span of 7 min. They had to do the physical training that they had chosen along the corridor. For every set of physical training, the patrol was required to only pick up one slip of paper with a question written on it to answer the question. Hence the patrols answered 3 questions in total.

The patrol was then given 1 min to 拆掉 and pack everything, before leaving for their next station.

Reflections from a Year 1...
Through this station, I learnt the importance of good communication within the patrol, and also the importance of waiting for our patrol mates, not just during PT but throughout the whole camp. I also saw the importance of reading the Guides notes, because many things from there would be tested during OJ.

Reflections from a Year 2...
For this station, I could have been a better PL. I was so busy obsessing about getting the task done that I forgot about my patrolmates, who were blindfolded. I should have taken care of them and yet one of my Y1s got kupped. Also, later I was very focused on getting the PT done in time, I was expecting my PS to watch at the back because I couldn't see there, and yet she got kupped because I made a foolish assumption.

Reflections from a Year 2...
From here, I feel that we could have better communication and also the other patrol members could have more initiative in asking the PL and PS of what to do instead of just standing there to receive instructions. As for the 3 sets of pt that we had to do, we often did not wait for the patrol members to catch up with the front person and as a result, leaving a big gap between each person. Moreover, although we were able to answer correctly most of the questions being asked, however, there were also some questions that we were unsure of especially the first aid part. I feel that we could have read our guides notes more often and familiarise ourselves with the Guides notes more before setting off for ATC.

Station 3 (Corridor between Our Chalet and Our Cabana)
Station masters will take one water bottle, one mess tin and one rubber mallet from the patrol logistics to facilitate execution of Part 2 of the station.

Part 1:
Thor has been captured by Loki’s evil army and you are here to rescue him. In order to get to him, you must break into his prison which is protected by an electric fence.

Only one person is allowed to move through at once and you must transport all your logistics through the electric fence. The guards have noticed your break in and you have 14 min before they arrive. Collect all bearings that are written on pieces of paper scattered across the electric fence which will help you restore Thor’s powers after his escape. The rest of the patrol are to do 3 min leg raise and 3 min girls style pumping position alternately.

A maximum of 1 min will be given if time extension is needed.

Part 2:
With your help, Thor has successfully escaped. However, after being in there for a long period of time, Thor is weak and hungry. He will need food and retrieve his magical hammer to restore his power. Find food, water and his hammer using the bearings you have retrieved within 7 min. You must move as a patrol.

The first set of bearings will lead the patrol to a mess tin, which represents food. One year one will be asked to state the edibility test, which will allow them to take back their mess tin and move on to find the next item.

The second set of bearings will lead them to a water bottle, which represents water. One year two will be asked to state the order of materials to build a filter column (bottle), which will allow them to take back the water bottle and move on to find the last item.

The third set of bearings will lead them to a rubber mallet, which represents Thor’s hammer. The patrol will be asked to list 3 Guides’ Laws to prove that they are real guides and gain Thor’s trust.

Edibility test:
1. Take a small portion of the plant, squeeze it and rub it on the inner part of upper arm. If nothing happens after 10min (e.g. irritation), proceed to the next step.
2. Take the sawed portion and apply it to lips. If nothing happens after 10min, take a small amount and put it in the mouth. Chew it and spit it out.
3. If all is well after 10min, take a spoonful of the same plant and swallow it. If still feel normal after 8hrs, consume handful of plant and wait for another 8hrs more. The plant is safe to consume if no abnormal things have happened.

Order of materials in filter column:
● Pebbles
● Charcoal
● Coarse sand
● Fine sand

Guide Laws:
1. A Guide is loyal and can be trusted.
2. A Guide is useful and help others.
3. A Guide is polite, considerate and respects her elders.
4. A Guide is friendly and a sister to all Guide.
5. A Guide is obedient.
6. A Guide is kind to all living things.
7. A Guide has courage and is cheerful in all difficulties.
8. A Guide takes care of her own possessions and those of other people.
9. A Guide is thrifty and diligent.
10. A Guide is self-disciplined in what she thinks, says or does.

Reflections from a Year 1...
The second part of the station was to find three of our logistics we handed over to the station masters at the start of the station, using the bearings on the slips of paper we obtained in the first part of the station. This allowed me to clarify my doubts regarding orienteering with the guidance of the Year 2s. Some of the comments we received was that we did not take care of our things, and that we took very long to process the instructions given and execute them.

Reflections from a Year 2...
This station taught us to always take care of our patrol members as two of our patrol members got taken away by the station masters while we were doing PT.

Reflections from a Year 2...
During the orienteering, our compass suddenly did not work as whatever bearings we took, it all pointed towards the same way. At this time, our patrol were very scared and were at a loss of what to do. We were very sure that the compass is working well before we packed our logistics for ATC and we also did it the correct way. We tried a few times but unfortunately, the result was still the same. In the end, the I/Cs allowed us to just find our things without using the compass. From this experience, I learnt that we should check all our things thoroughly to ensure that they are working well before any activities. As for the testing on our survival skills, we are able to answer every one of them.

Station 4 (Pax Lodge)
Storyline: While chasing after Loki in the streets of New York City, Loki shoots towards the avengers an energy blast that creates a deep trench between them and Loki. While it is easy to use their super powers to fly over to the other side, their logistics are weighing them down and hence they are unable to get to the other side with their logistics. Your patrol's task is to build a gadget that spans the entire trench in 12 min so as to transport all your patrol logistics across the trench without dropping into the deep gap. During the tying of structure, you are allowed to move freely around the room. After you are done building the structure, your patrol is to split into 2 groups with each occupying one end of the room. It is up to you how you are going to split the patrol. While transporting the logistics, nothing can touch the boundary marked out. If the logistics touches the restricted boundary, it will be considered that that item is not successfully transported.

Proposed solution
麻绳 is placed to the top of the two A . The entire structure works like a pulley system, where one end pulls the while the other end releases the . Patrol can attach their water bottles and 配备 easily to the 麻绳 using the 麻绳 itself or 白绳 and transport it across. The 2深蓝木 are used as support if the slacks and the 配备 drops. The 2 青木 are transported by pulling them across the 2深蓝木 using 麻绳.

Reflections from a Year 1...
This was indeed a difficult challenge as we had to improvise something within a short span of time.

Reflections from a Year 1...
We were quick to come out with a structure in mind; however we did not tie our structure very quickly. Also, we kept changing our plans of the final structure while building our structure; some of the ideas were not beneficial and it resulted in us wasting time to change back to the original plan. This made me understand the importance of good planning, so as to not waste time by changing our plans. While transporting the logistics, our logistics keep touching the area they were not allowed to touch. This resulted in endless reminders from the seniors to not touch that area.

Reflections from a Year 2...
After this station, I feel that we should work more on our lashes and do it fast and also tight. For the transporting of logistics especially the water bottles, we should have tied them to something so that it would have been easier to transport them. I also think that we can be more creative with our structure like P4 which used only 1 木 and transported the logistics with a pulley. This experience has taught me to be more creative and to think out of the box.

Station 5 (Ramp outside Olave Hall)
Part 1- Minesweeper
Plot:
Loki has invaded this area and filled the place up time bombs to stop you from finding him. If you step on one, you will have to restart from the starting point. In each square marked out using raffia strings, you will have to answer survival questions to choose your next move. One misstep, and it could cost you your time. Good luck!

The patrols have to attempt the minesweeper, which would be raffia string taped to the walls, forming squares for them to step into. In each square, the patrol would have to answer survival questions to proceed to the next square of her choice. They would not know where the time bombs are located, so upon encountering one in the square, they would have to restart. While one patrol member attempted the minesweeper, the other patrol members were to do Chek Chek or Physical Training depending on the station masters.

Question
Solution
Name 3 natural sources of water
Vines, bamboo, coconut, banana plant, dew, rain, seepage, shrubs
Describe how to set up a signal fire
3 piles of fires place at equal distance apart. Damp kindling so the fire will be very smoky to attract attention
State 2 importance of a shelter
Protection from natural elements, protection from wild animals and personal privacy
Name 5 ways to retain fluid
Avoid exertion, rest, do not smoke, keep in the shade, do not lie down on hot grounds, never take alcohol, do not talk, take water in sips, do not gulp it down
Name 3 types of fuel
Tinder(dried grasses, fine wood shavings, lallang etc), Kindling, wood, animal droppings, coal
Name 2 methods of lifting a casualty
Body support, piggy back, drag method, double-cradle carry, cross handed seat carry, fore-and-aft
How many compressions do you do during CPR at once?
30
Name 2 symptoms of shock?
Rapid pulse, pale, cold, clammy skin, sweating, nausea, weak and dizzy, shallow breathing, blue lips
What is the universal sign for choking?

Where is a suitable place to start a fire?
Adequate ventilation is available, sheltered from high winds, avoid the base of trees and stumps as fireplace, avoid wet or porous rocks as it will expand and explode.

Part 2- First Aid
Plot:
Good job on avoiding the time bombs and weaving your way through quickly. Unfortunately, not everyone escaped unscathed. Throughout the journey, 2 other patrol members were injured. 1 of them was burnt and scalded on the journey while the other suffers from a close fracture on the left leg due to the time bomb. Treat them well before it’s too late to catch up with Loki. Choose your two casualties now and treat them quickly.
Fracture
Symptoms:
1. Deformity, swelling, bruising.
2. Pain and difficulty in moving the area
3. Shortening, bending and twisting of limb.
4. Signs of shock
5. A wound, possibly with bone ends protruding.

Closed fracture:
1. Advise casualty to keep still. Support injured part with your hands, or ask a helper to do this until it is immobilized.
2. For firmer support, bandage the injured part to an unaffected part of the body. Make sure bandage is tied on the uninjured side. Otherwise bandage the injured part to a stiff, straight object
- For lower limb fractures, bandage the uninjured leg to the injured one if removal to the hospital is likely to be damaged.
3. Arrange to transport the casualty to the hospital as necessary. Treat for shock if necessary by raising the legs. Do not raise them if it hurts the casualty more.
4. Check circulation beyond bandage every 10min. if circulation is impaired, loosen bandages.

Minor Burns and Scalds
Treatment:
1. Flood injured part with cold water for at least 10 min to stop burning and relieve pain.
2. Gently remove any constrictions from the injured area.
3. Cover with sterile dressing or a clean, non-fluffy pad and bandage loosely in place.

Reflections from a Year 1...
Good communication skills were needed in order to allow the whole patrol to understand the route on the minesweeper. Our patrol numbered the three boxes of each row of the minesweeper, which made it easier for everyone to understand and know the path on the minesweeper. The second part of the station tested us on our first aid skills. As I could not remember the treatment required to heal the given scenarios, I felt bad for being unable to contribute to the patrol.

Reflections from a Year 2...
This station was really fun as it tested our soft and hard skills!

Reflections from a Year 2...
At first, our patrol was unable to communicate with one another in terms of telling them which boxes are the time bombs and the correct answer. The seniors had to tell us the way to communicate better. Furthermore, as for the asking of questions on survival skills, some of us are unable to answer them, clearly showing that we did not read our Guides notes enough. However, as for the chek chek, it was fun and we are all able to do it. :)

Station 6 (Corridor outside Sangam)
Plot:
You are Captain America and you are leading your fellow members into the enemy’s territory. To get into their territory, you will have to build a catapult and toss bombs, which will be paper balls, into the arena to destroy as much of their land. The higher and further the balls are shot, the lesser PT you will have to do at the end of the mission. The position of the ball will be taken as the step that the ball first touches. You will have 15 min to build the catapult and execute the shooting of the bombs without time extension.

Overall, this station consists of 2 parts, gadgeting and a mini physical training.

Firstly, gadgeting will be a catapult. The catapult is an application to what the Guides have learnt in their previous Guides Activities, and this will put their skills and sense of urgency into test. They will then use the catapult to shoot paper balls up the stairs at the corridor of Sangam and their result will determine their physical training; the higher they shoot up the stairs, the less tiring their PT will be. They will have 5 balls to shoot and we will take the best result they achieved within the 5 balls.

The amount of gadget poles is fixed, and the patrol can use their creativity to build any catapult they like with the logistics given to them, but it has to function well.

After the gadgeting is completed, the patrol will 集合 back and will be told of the PT they have to complete, exercises decreasing in difficulty as the paper balls shoot higher up the steps. They will be given 4 min to complete the PT exercises. They will be given 2 min to 拆掉 their structure after that, followed by a debrief on their performance.

Proposed solution

Reflections from a Year 1...
I was glad to be able to voice out my suggestions while we were discussing on how to build the catapult, which was something I rarely did. While tying our catapult, our water bottles got kupped by the stations masters; it was later commented that we should not only take care of our 配备 and 青木, but everything we have with us.

Reflections from a Year 2...
The station was fun and all of us had built a catapult before so it was something more familiar to us.

Ending
The station masters gave a debrief, and then the ICs gave an overall debrief. Generally, the trainees did relatively well, though many did not take care of their logistics well, resulting in many patrols' logistics getting kupped by the station masters.

Storyline: As a result of your good teamwork and skills, you as heroes across the globe have successfully stopped Loki, the fierce demigod from taking over the world. Well done and all the best for the rest of your missions as superheroes.

Overall reflections from a Year 1...
In conclusion, OJ was a very enriching experience where we got to bond with our patrol mates and at the same time, test our familiarity with the Guides notes and the skills we learnt.

Overall reflections from a Year 1...
Overall, I feel that we should have worked faster and given it our all at the various stations. We should also work on our skills and read up on our Guides notes.

Overall reflections from a Year 1...
We were then given a debrief of all individual stations and also an overall debrief of the whole OJ. Through the debrief, the respective station masters told us the comments for our performance in their station, as well as what they we testing us on at their stations. This allowed me to have a clearer understanding of objectives of the different stations. The comments allowed us to know our weaknesses and improve on them on future OJs.

Overall reflections from a Year 2...
Overall, the stations for OJ were really creative and different from the previous OJs as they tested more on our creativity.

Campfire
After going through all the previous activities, the Guides had dinner and wash- up before Campfire, which was a time for them to wind down and bond with their fellow patrol mates. During Campfire, the songleaders led everyone through various sections of songs, and in between each section, the patrols would perform their skits with either a dance or song.

Reflections from a Year 1...
After a long and tiring day, campfire was the event that I looked most forward to. Luckily, the weather was in our favour and it did not rain so we had the campfire out at the Campfire ring. Throughout the whole campfire experience, despite this not being our first, it still put us in a happy mood throughout and our excitement built up as time passed. The performances were all greatly related to this year's ATC theme (Marvel): There's a hero in everyone of us. I also thought that all the patrols put in a tremendous amount of effort to please the audience, and all the skits were very meaningful. One of the Guiders told us an inspirational fiction story from the movie Pay It Forward, with the message that everyone can be a superhero, which was really meaningful too.

Reflections from a Year 1...
Campfire was fun with the showcase of the skits put up by different patrols as well as the entertaining and engaging performances put up by the song leaders. The emcees were Celine and Enqi who entertained us endlessly with their witty comebacks and hilarious remarks which helped us to enjoy this campfire. I think it was a fairly enjoyable night and I look forward to next year's campfire!

Reflections from a Year 2...
For this year campfire, thanks to the great weather, we were glad that we could hold it at the campfire ring! So that we could experience actual campfire. :) Even though the campfire was not very long, everyone had lots of fun and it was considered one of the best parts of the camp!

Reflections from a Year 2...
I was very excited as this year’s campfire was finally held outdoors. Campfire was probably the activity that I really anticipated the most. All the seniors and Guiders also joined us for the campfire and it was heartwarming to see everyone coming together and participate in the campfire, singing and doing the actions. The emcees and song leaders put in a lot of effort to create the lively atmosphere. My patrol rehearsed many times to put up the patrol performance and my whole patrol did our very best to perform an entertaining skit combined with singing. This year’s campfire was indeed memorable and enjoyable.

After the long- awaited Campfire ended, the trainees has supper and went to sleep before the start of Day 3.

Day 3

Strike Camp
For this activity, the trainees were required to 拆 everything except their Kitchen Shelters and Camp Christine Tents within 30 min, and then lay their Camp D logistics out for inspection. The purpose of strike camp was to instill a sense of urgency in the trainees and to allow their Camp D logistics to dry during inspection. Meanwhile, the counsellors had to 拆 the 团旗.

After breakfast, strike camp continued, and the patrols had to 拆 their Kitchen Shelters.

Reflections from a Year 1...
It was a very hectic situation as we could hear a cacophony of voices screaming out different instructions. Our layout had to be both, neat and standardized. With time running out fast, we had to constantly ask for time extensions. I felt that our sense of urgency was not there when we could actually complete the task within the time given.

Reflections from a Year 1...
Strike camp was stressful at times because we had to take down all the structures in the shortest time possible. However, it proved to be a rewarding experience as my patrol became more bonded because of this and it was definitely a good practice to test my sense of urgency.

Reflections from a Year 2...
When we had to layout our logistics, we could then know what we were missing or what extra items we had. Also, communication across patrols was very important as every patrol's layout had to be the same. Overall, I think the timing given for strike camp was sufficient.

Reflections from a Year 2...
Although 30 minutes is a long time for us to take down everything, however, we are still unable to complete in time and had to ask for many time extensions. In my opinion, I think that 30 minutes is sufficient and that we should work faster in 拆- ing our structures and have a greater sense of urgency. Moreover, we should also allocate our manpower properly so as to make the process more efficient. For the later part of the day, we had another strike camp which was to take down the kitchen shelter. For this part, we communicated and work well together and was able to finish everything on time.

Company Games
Company Games was an opportunity for the Guides to have fun and bond. For this activity, the Guides played "Dog and Bone", a game played almost every year during ATC. The Guides were split into two groups, which competed against each other to grab netballs placed in the centre based on the descriptions given by the ICs (e.g. those wearing spectacles, those tying buns etc.). There were 5 netballs in total and the side which grabbed more netballs would earn a point. At the end of Company Games, the losing team had to do a forfeit.

Reflections from a Year 1...
We were able to see a different side of our seniors apart from the strict and cold image of them we were used to seeing during 集合. Many of our seniors were literally wrestling on the ground for the ball and there was much screaming and shouting as the ball was being tossed about and the entire place was in a state of utter chaos but it was one of the only times we got to have fun as a company and naturally we enjoyed it.

Reflections from a Year 1...
This was the time we were able to see a new crazy side of our seniors and batchmates as they tried their best to snatch the netballs placed in the middle of the hall and were very sporty and participative to try to help their group to win. We all managed to bond and be closer as a 团.

Reflections from a Year 2...
Everyone had lots of fum playing and we could really relax ourselves after everything had been over! Even though my side lost and we had to do the forfeit, with everyone doing it together, it filled the activity with much more laughter! We enjoyed ourselves and thanks to the seniors for planning such a game. :)

Reflections from a Year 2...
The game was really fun and funny. Through this company games, I got to interact more with the seniors and juniors and compete with them in order to win. Everybody was really very enthusiastic in snatching the ball and was totally engrossed in the game which was really amusing and enjoyable. I was able to take a break and enjoy myself after all the strenuous activities for 2 days. The forfeit was really embarrassing but we did it together and it was really fun.

Afterwards, the Guides had to 集合 before Mystery Games.

Mystery Games
For mystery games, the Guides were split into their different batches. The YAs and Year 4s were in charge of different batches of Guides.

Year 1s
The Year 1s were first asked to 集合 and then, they were given 15 seconds to line themselves according to their height. The Year 1s had to 集合 again and were told to have better communication and to move faster. After which, they were given another chance to move into their positions again. When they could finish their task within the time given, they had to 集合 and were then given yet another 15 seconds to line themselves according to their date of birth. They then repeated the task. Thereafter, they had to line up in accordance to class.

After these tasks, the Year 1s had to mass change into their Guides Uniform in 4 min. In the end, the Year 1s did not manage to fulfill the requirement. The Year 4s then gave them a chance to set a timing to mass change back into ATC tee and PE shorts. Eventually, the Year 4s gave them only 3 min and 30s.

After mass change, the Year 1s were then given the chance to come together and voice out their opinions and feelings as well as questions about Guides.

Reflections from a Year 1...
From this string of activities, I learnt that effective communication within a 届 is really important to get things going. For mass change, I learnt that we should always set higher targets for ourselves instead of trying to give ourselves more time. I also realised that anything is possible so long as we work together and help each other and not be so self-centred and care only for ourselves. Thankfully, for the second mass change, we managed to mass change within the time limit as we helped each other out and completed the task as one.

The discussion was very meaningful. We could take this opportunity to understand the rationale behind the things that we Guides do. We could finally view the various situations from a different perspective and not find them a chore.

Year 2s
The Year 2s had to do Barang PT around the campsite, then the Year 4s gave them some advice and comments regarding their performance throughout the entire ATC. Afterwards, the Year 2s sang their own patrol songs and cheered their patrol cheers as they 集合-ed, while waiting for the other batches.

Reflections from a Year 2...
Through this mystery games, we learnt to never leave anyone behind and to communicate as a batch and not as individuals.

Reflections from a Year 2...
Our seniors gave us lots of good advice, and I think our batch was even pleasantly surprised when they said that they thought that we had improved greatly from when they had last seen us.

Year 3s
The Year 3s were given 3 min to mass change into their Guides Uniform and take their personal logistics before 集合-ing. Afterwards, the Year 3s were handed blindfolds and an inspection layout. They were told that they had to layout everyone's personal logistics within 12 min. However, half of the batch was blindfolded, while the other half was not. Those who were blindfolded were allowed to touch the logistics, while those not blindfolded could not, but had to give the blindfolded Year 3s instructions. The proposed solution by the Year 4s was for each blindfolded person to be accompanied by one non- blindfolded person.

After the inspection, the Year 3s were given another 3 min to mass change back into ATC Tee and PE shorts before 集合-ing.

Reflections from a Year 3...
Overall, the situation was very messy and chaotic, as almost everyone was panicking. Initially, we did not think pairing up but with some prompting, everyone paired up, making it more efficient. However, some logistics were still kupped by the Year 4s, especially from those who were blindfolded.  In the end, the layout was not even half done, which was very disappointing. This goes to show that as a batch, we need to give clearer instructions and avoid panicking because it would only add to the chaos. As the leadership batch, giving clear instructions to our junior is very important, and is an aspect that we really need to work on.

Prize- giving Ceremony and Break Camp
After a long and tiring ATC, it was finally time to announce the positions.

1st- P5 Thor
2nd- P4 Marvelus
3rd- P3 X-Men
Consolation (in no order of merit)- P1 Iron Lady, P2 Mystic and P6 Avengers

The counsellors, Year 4s, YAs and Guiders were all thanked for their contributions to ATC, which truly made this camp a memorable and fruitful one!

Afterwards, the Guides loaded all their patrol logistics into the truck before making their way back to school. Upon reaching school, the Guides returned all the logistics back to their respective locations. Thereafter, they proceeded to LT1 where a video recapping ATC was screened. Through the heartwarming video, the Guides were able to reminiscence all the times they spent together with their patrols. Lastly, it was time for break camp, when the Guides were dismissed after the arduous journey!

Congratulations to all the Guides for surviving this ATC! Hopefully, everyone was able to takeaway some learning points from the camp, and that everyone had the opportunity to improve on their soft and hard skills. From this camp, many grew to realise that there truly is a hero in all of us that is waiting for break free. :) The Guides can now learn to castaway any doubts or fears and trust in themselves that they are able to achieve what they set out to do!
