Hello Guides! (:
For today’s Patrol Activity (PA), the Patrol Leaders
(PL) planned the respective activities for their patrol! P1, P3 and P4 did
build Kitchen Shelters (KS), while P2 and P6 did Kitchen Tables (KT). P5 did a
lash challenge and played some games! Here are the respective reflections from
the Year 2 secretaries of the patrols!
P1 Bougainvillea
(Tasha):
Monday's PA
was our second gathering with the new P1, and we were tasked to build a kitchen
shelter in 50 minutes. I was assigned to be PL for this activity, and I had to
guide everyone to build the structure properly. For the first half of our time
limit, we focused on laying out the 木 and to 打进 the
utters in order for the kitchen shelter to be stable. However, the y1s were
unfamiliar with the procedure and did not know how to do most of the lashes and
ended up turning to the y2s for help. The rest of the y2s, including me, had to
tie everything by ourselves while the y1s assisted us in holding up the
structure. Throughout the process, the lashes kept getting loose and we had to
make each and every one tighter. Due to lack of manpower, I had to repeatedly
ask for time extensions and we finally finished building it in a total of 1
hour and 5 minutes. Despite having more time on hand, the roof was still very
saggy and the whole kitchen shelter was unstable. It was a bad job done and our
seniors were unhappy with the results. In addition, while building the kitchen
shelter, our morale was low and we basically had no cheers. The seniors also
had to urge us to constantly 报时, and they even managed to kiap a few
of our logistics at the start of the PA. Even though our performance was
unsatisfactory, we learnt a lot and will try our best for the next few 集合s to be a better patrol.
P2 Ixora (Wei Mei):
For the first part of
the PA, my patrol practised our lashes. For each lash, we were given one minute
more than the standard timing. We practised the square lash, diagonal lash, the
tripod lash and the A-架.
The Year 1s were able to do these lashes quite well, although some of them were
unfamiliar with the tripod lash. We also taught them the mickey mouse, 八字结 and活结. It was a bit challenging to explain
to my juniors how to do the mickey mouse since I never really thought about how
to do it. After that, we did pioneering
at the field. We were given 6 青木,2 红木,and many 白木.
My patrol had to build a bench (the kind that is used for Patrol Leader Training
Camp) out of it. We had to borrow 麻绳 from P3. We had 40 minutes to do so. For this activity,
Melanie was PL and Elaine was PS. My patrol started off rather slowly, as we
only had the two tripods (tied with 青木) done after 10 minutes. Although we measured the distance
between the tripods, we kept accidentally shifting the 木so we had to re-measure the distance a
number of times. I think this could have been avoided if we had someone to顶 the 木 and a lot of time could have been
saved. The distance between the 木
of the tripods had to be big enough to be able to support the wooden board but
at the same time not too small. My patrol made the distance between the 木 too small. I also learned that the
height of the 红木 had to be at the
chest level of the shortest person in the patrol. The height of the 红木 was important to ensure the members of
the patrol could eat comfortably. We rafted 2 白木 to each side of the tripods and it was
beneficial for the year 1s as they learnt how to raft it with square lash which
was more secure. In the end we had to ask for more than 5 minutes of time
extension. I think my patrol could have worked faster as building the bench in
40 minutes was not very tough. Even then, it was still an improvement from last
集合 where we took 40
minutes to build a simple gateway with gadget poles. Overall, I think the sense of urgency of the
patrol could still be improved. This PA was not very difficult but it was still
meaningful as all the Year 2s had a chance to lead the Year 1s. It was
stressful and we had to think ahead more but it was manageable.
P3 Jasmine (Jo-Anne):
For this
week's PA, we were supposed to build a kitchen shelter and a dome tent. For the
Kitchen Shelter, we were originally given 45 minutes to build it. However,
because of the lack of sense of urgency and unsureness, we were unable to
complete the Kitchen Shelter on time and had to ask for many time extensions.
Overall, even though we were punished for being exceeding the time given, the
satisfaction when we saw a completed kitchen shelter was great. I have learnt
that in future during 集合s and PAs, we need to put in more
effort to carry out tasks more quickly and efficiently. We also should 报时 and cheer more to keep track of time and the patrol morale.
P4 Orchid (Maisy):
On Monday 6 July
2015, Patrol 4 Orchid had patrol activities. We had two activities, namely
combined games with Patrol 5 Sunflower and building a kitchen shelter. For the
first part of patrol activity, we had the games. We were supposed to play in
the courtyard at block G level 3, but due to the passing out ceremony of
the Chinese orchestra, we played at the empty space beside 1C classroom. The
first game we played was Dog and Bone, where the 2 patrols were lined on
opposite sides and each person was numbered. 2 rolls of masking tape were
placed in between the patrols. When Valerie (P5 PL) called a number or a
criteria that fit one's number, the guides would run out and take the tape, if
they were tapped by the opponent while holding the tape, they had to drop it.
We played this game for about 10 minutes. It was quite fun though we were quite
tired since we had to run after a full day of school. The following game was
captain's ball which was held at the courtyard of block G level 3 after the
Chinese Orchestra section was done. We played captain's ball for about 10
minutes as well. It was very fun and we enjoyed it as it was more of team
bonding game and we had good bonding with our patrol mates. After the games, we
had a water break before separating into our individual patrols for the second
part of our patrol activity, which was the building of our kitchen shelter . We
were given 7 minutes to get all our logistics and gathered at the field. We
were given 40 minutes to build the kitchen shelter. For this activity, the PL
was Kyna and the PS was Maisy. We were a bit slow in the beginning and did not
really cheer much during the activity, however, we managed to speed up and
finished building the structure in 47 minutes. It was our first Monday patrol
activity as Patrol 4 Orchid and we got to know each other and get along better
through this activity. The Y1s also learnt some new skills and got to better
understand how the structure was being built, having been more actively
involved as compared to last semester. After building the structure, we took a
patrol photograph before taking apart the structure and returning all the
logistics. Before we parted, we had a brief patrol corner where our seniors
treated us to drinks. We sat in a circle on the parade square and were each
asked to give a few facts about ourselves. Through this activity, we were not
so awkward with one another anymore. We hope that through subsequent Patrol
activities, we will be more comfortable in our current patrol.

P5 Sunflower (Chen Wei):
Today, we had
the first Patrol Activity with our patrols. For P5 Sunflower, our PA started
with a game of Dog and Bone against P4 at Block G Level 3. Valerie read out
certain requirements, and those of us who met the requirements were supposed to
run out and try to bring the tape roll back to our 'base'. It was a rather
competitive game, but both patrols had fun. After that, we had a game of
Captains Ball with P4, and the rule was that every time the ball went into the
corridors (out of court), the whole patrol had to do 5 pumpings. It was rather
pressurising because we felt a more urgent need to play well so that we would
not pull our patrols down. Moreover, the game was fulfilling and interesting
because of the newly added rule. Next, we collected 长木, 中长木, 中木, and 中短木, then proceeded to practice our
lashes within certain time limits. I thought that this was very helpful because
I got to practice lashes like the A 架 lash, tripod lash and diagonal lash,
which I was not very familiar with. This was also the time that I got to
clarify my doubts about the lashing. Lastly, we had an intense
Lash-Competition, of which the Year 2s and 3s had to tie a tripod with 定脚,
while the Year 1s tied an A 架
with 2 中短木s across them. After we tied each lash, we had to run one
round around level 3 of Block G. All of us were racing against time, and it was
not an easy challenge. Although I could complete within the time limit, I felt
that I was efficient but not effective as my lashes were rather loose. I feel
that I can definitely improve on that. All in all, today's PA was very
interesting to me as I enjoy having CCAs that are planned differently, and I
look forward to more PAs with P5! :D
P6 Morning Glory (Claire):
For PA on Monday, our patrol built a kitchen table within a time limit
of 45 minutes and we did not ask for any time extension as well as building a
roman chariot within a time limit of 10 minutes. For the roman chariot, we
asked for a time extension of 1 minute and managed to move the person on the
roman chariot from one place to another within the time limit. However, our
lashes were not as tight as we had expected. Secondly, we did the kitchen table
and I was the Pl during the last 25 minutes or so. I didn’t know what to do at
first and it was quite messy. We wasted a lot of time trying to tie the tripod
lash. As the PL in charge of that activity, I was quite happy that we completed
on time and everyone put in their best effort. Even the juniors who were unsure
of their lashes contributed and helped out a lot which makes things faster. I
feel that we have bonded much through this activity as now, it is not as
awkward to be giving my patrol juniors and batch mates instructions. However, I
think we can still look after our logistics carefully as it was once again
being “kupped” by our seniors. We did a forfeit of 15 pumpings because of that
but I felt that it was meaningful as we can learn from our mistakes and not
repeat it. Overall, it was a fun yet tiring experience as a patrol and as a
chance to lead for one of the first few times.
