Patrol Activity, 31 August 2015

Hey Guides!! (: This is the last patrol activity (PA) of term 3! The following are accounts from the respective patrols!

P1 Bougainvillea (Tasha):
For last Monday's PA, we were allocated some time to build an emergency shelter, but as this was the first time building it for most of us, we were unfamiliar with the procedure and took time to figure out what to do. The seniors were unhappy with our performance and briefly told us to just the structure because we had no sense of urgency. All of us did our best but during our second try, we were still very slow as there was a lack of communication between the y2s and the y1s and the PL did not give out instructions clearly. Hence, despite our efforts, we ended up having to the structure yet again. However, during the third and final try, we all managed to step up and some y2s were even helping the PL to take lead and having ample amounts of practice, we completed the emergency shelter within the time limit. This change in attitude and results made the seniors satisfied and we proceeded to do the next activity. Next, we were tasked to build a Fireman's Ladder just for fun and for the sake of trying it out. Although it was not a new experience for me, it was still exhilarating as it has been very long since my last time and I always get that thrill from overcoming my fears and doing that flip! Everyone had a go on it and for once, PA was actually filled with fun and laughter. We ended off this PA on a good note as it strengthened our bonds and we developed many hard skills.

P2 Ixora (Wei Mei):

This PA was quite fun. For the first half of the PA, we built annual training camp stuff. In 30 minutes, we were supposed to build a shoe rack, two emergency shelters and one flag pole. I was in charge of the emergency shelter, along with Melanie and whichever year one that was available. We managed to build the emergency without much trouble, although we took a bit longer than usual, and we had to re-tie some of the corners of the poncho as it was sagging. For some of the year ones, it was the first time they built an emergency shelter, and I think it was good experience for them. The flagpole was the most problematic one, though, as none of us knew how to attach the flag to the flagpole. However the flag was already torn so we couldn’t tie it. It was a pity though flagpole was upright and the guy-lines were quite taught (for once!) After that, we did fireman’s ladder. I built the fireman’s ladder for the first time, and getting the proportion right was rather difficult. I went on the fireman’s ladder once when I was in 绳桥committee, so it was pretty easier. It was quite fun and every one managed to climb the it three times.

P3 Jasmine (Jo-Anne):

For today's PA, we built a bridge and a flag pole. Firstly, we were tasked to build the flag pole in less than 20 minutes. It was our first time building a flag pole for many of us and we were unsure of what to do. However, we caught on quickly and managed to complete it in time, despite having faced some issues. Next, we proceeded on to build the bridge. We took 麻绳,6 青木,8 红木,2 黄木, and 20 白木. We tied 2 tripods with the 红木s and connected them with 青木 顶角s. Subsequently, we tied 2 红木 to the 顶角 and rafted with the 白木. The 黄木 was used as handrails. We did not have much problems with the whole structure but the pace was very slow due to the sun and the thorns in the grass. Also, we were unsure of how to raft so it took a very long time to get it done. Patrol morale was low too and we were unable to complete the structure in time even after many time extensions granted. All in all, patrol morale was very important and we need to quicken the pace in which we work, so that we can get things done in the future.

P4 Orchid (Maisy):
We had outdoor cooking where the y2s and y3s had to prepare our own dishes. For this activity, xinjie was PL and kyna was PS . During the building of the fire altar, we encountered some problems such as the zinc plates inability to fit into the altar as well as the instability of the fire altar but we managed to force the zinc plate in and hammered the structure in as well as tie support so our fire altar was safe to use. We took a while to start a fire due to the wind and used a lot of matches. Eventually we used P5's fire to light a piece of palm leave and transferred it to our stove. After we got the fires started, cooking began and we cooked what we had bought, chicken rice and chocolate cones. Since our fire was hot enough, the chicken rice cooked quickly and was ready for consumption. We roasted the chocolate cones next which turned out better than expected while the Y3s cooked what they had prepared. When everything was cooked, we realised that we had a lot of food and invited P5 over to share some food with them. We spent the rest of PA eating and bonding as a patrol after which we cleaned up and went home

P5 Sunflower (Chen Wei):

Today we did OC :D Firstly, we took the materials essential for OC which were 2长木 for the diagonals, 2中长木 for the length, 4中木 for the 4 corners of the fire alter, and 2中短木 for the width. We also took bricks, zinc plate, kindlings and cooking utensils. Following which, we constructed our fire alter and then laid out the sand and bricks accordingly. After some time, we managed to start a fire and in no time, we were able to sustain it with twigs. Finally, we started cooking the food. We cooked noodles, kebabs, hotdogs, fried eggs, and roasted marshmallows. After we finished cooking the food, everyone was excited for the feast. The food was so delicious! All in all, it was an amazing experience and I was very happy that we could sustain the fire in a short time, which was indeed a source of satisfaction.

P6 Morning Glory (Claire):

For PA on monday, we had mass change, building of flag pole, emergency shelter, baggage rack and inspection. For inspection, I was the PL and had to give instructions. It was very chaotic despite the fact that there was only 1 patrol doing it. I was affected by the chaos and did not manage to give out instructions clearly. Therefore, we did not complete on time. Ai Ning was the PL for the inspection the 2nd time. This time we managed to finish it in the time limit as more of us knew the inspection (it was the same as the first time) and of course, under the clearer instructions of Ai Ning. There are many things i can improve in this aspect. For mass change, we did not manage to change in 3 minutes 30 seconds as we have to change quickly and also help our juniors afterwards. We could have a better sense of urgency and complete on time. As for the building of structures, we were okay except that we could have built the emergency shelter faster than what we did. It was rather slow and i was quite disappointed at ourselves. Overall, it was a fun PA and I hope to have such enjoyable ones in the future.

The next guides’ activity will only be after the September holidays! We hope everyone rests well and take a good break in this one week! (:

Cheers,
Michelle
