Initiatives and EDD Preparation, 24 August 2018

Hello Guides!

For this 集合, we decided on an initiative session, also known as Badge Work. This time, the Year 1s, 2s and 3s worked on a WAGGGS activity, the Accident Prevention badge and the Dental Health badge. The Year 3s also worked on the Writer’s badge while the Year 1s and 2s discussed on their Physical Training(PT) and set some goals. In addition, the people involved in East Division Day(EDD) were excused to make preparations.

WAGGGS Activity (Climate Change Badge)
For this activity, we were given multiple environment-related tasks to complete within the time frame within our individual patrols. The badge that could be earned from this activity was the Climate Change Badge. At the same time, the guides who were involved in EDD were making their own preparations.

Here are the activities:
Activity
Details
1.1 Climate is life
As a group, create your own posters.
Explain what climate change is, why it matters and why it’s happening.
1.2 Climate is life
How do you feel about climate change? Are you worried about it, excited about how you can make a difference, or just not interested?
Write a short essay or story about your thoughts and feelings on climate change and explain why you feel the way you do.
2.1 Causes of climate change
Discuss your impressions of the documentary. Do you agree or disagree with the information in it, and why? Whose points of view are represented in the film? Whose are not represented? What are the most important messages? What actions are recommended? And most importantly: what will your group do to follow up its recommendations?
Make an action plan and then carry it out.
2.2 Causes of climate change
In a group, create a set of cards, each labelled with a climate-related word, such as “greenhouse gas”, “global warming” and “drought”. Be as creative as possible!
Mix all the cards up and split up into teams.
Play a game of charades, where each person has to act out the word on their card, while their team has to guess what they are.
3.1 Impacts of climate change
Agriculture, fisheries and forestry are fundamental to provide us with food and other resources. In addition, they are important sectors for the world economy, providing income for over 1 billion people around the world (Source: FAO).
Discuss with your group how climate change could affect food production in your country and region. What options are there to ensure food security and rural employment?
3.2 Impacts of climate change
In this badge, you learned about foods that may no longer be available to you due to climate change. Which of those foods would you miss the most? Look it up and find out how climate change might hurt it and whether it can still be saved.
Prepare a poster about it and share it with the other people!
4.1 Solutions to climate change
Study different recent climate-related disasters, e.g. flooding or a hurricane. What damage did the disaster cause, and how did people get together to recover and rebuild after the event? Are steps being taken to prevent or prepare for future such disasters? What are your ideas for how to prepare for next time?
Discuss your findings and ideas as a group. Is there anything in common between the different disasters? Were the recovery efforts different in different places? Why do you think
this is the case?
4.2 Solutions to climate change
Study how people around the world used to keep themselves and their homes cool or warm before we started using energy-hungry methods. If you look, there are some really clever ways!
What can we do in our homes to replicate what was done in the past? What do you think governments should do to make sure our houses and other buildings are more energy efficient?
5.1 Take action
Have a contest to see who can make the most changes in their everyday lives to be greener and more energy-efficient.
Keep a checklist and compare notes at the end of a month to see who the winner is.
5.2 Take action
You already know about the importance of recycling and how it can help our planet conserve its resources. It is time to spread the word!
Collect many different rubbish items and use them to create an artwork. Be as creative as you can!

Reflections by Year 2s:
During Friday’s 集合, we sat as a patrol to complete our tasks to earn the WAGGGS badge. We were tasked to create posters, our thoughts and feelings about climate change and a few ideas to solve the issue. We tried our best to decorate our poster to be visually appealing and informative at the same time. We were given print outs about different natural disasters and events, and we had to write about the similarities and differences between them. Then, we watched a very insightful and informative video about climate change and why it is happening. We then reflected about whether we were excited about change, and what we were willing to do in order to mitigate climate change’s detrimental effects. We thought about what we can do as an individual or a nation to help mitigate climate change, for example, saving water by washing dishes/clothes on a full load. I think it is very important that we all put in effort individually in order to help reduce climate change in the world. I think climate change is a pressing matter that needs to be resolved soon, and we should play our part in it. Through this badge work, I have learnt more information about climate change and realised how serious the issue it is.

On Friday's 集合, we were given the first 1.5 hours to practice for East Division Day on Saturday. We were split into our different EDD committees. I am in recycled fashion. Our committee consists of 4 people, 2 Year 3s and 2 Year 2s. We were planning on what to do for our competition on Saturday. We painted some materials needed for the next day to prepare in advance. We also wanted to pick some leaves from areas outside school. However, we could not do so as it started raining heavily and we could not leave school. As a result, we resorted to going over our plan for the next day and ensuring everyone was clear on what to do. I think these EDD activities have allowed us Year 2s to bond better with the seniors. It also taught us perseverance and preparedness as we had to make sure everything was ready beforehand. It has also improved our time management skills as we only had a limited time to complete everything, at the same time juggling our other commitments.

Writer’s Badge
For this badge, only the Year 3s were conducting the activity for it, while the Year 1s and 2s went to do their own other activities. There were a total of three tasks to complete.

Here are the tasks:
Task
Details
1
Write an original story of one thousand to two thousand words.
2
Write one of the following:
  • A dramatic sketch taking at least 10 min to perform;
  • A short poem in recognized verse form.
  • An article or campfire yarn of not less than two hundred words;
  • An essay on her favorite hero or heroine.
3
Write:
  • A letter of at least two hundred words describing an incident she has enjoyed
  • An exercise in punctuation given by the tester

Reflection by a Year 3:
While the Year 1s and 2s were off discussing on their PT, the Year 3s had to complete some activities to earn the Writer’s Badge. Before we even started, some of us had already encountered problems in that we did not bring enough paper to write on. Thankfully, the other Year 3s had some spare paper to share. During these activities, many of us were discussing ideas on what to write, or looking through each other’s works to check or draw inspiration from. Truthfully, most of us did not finish writing in time, and we had to bring our papers back home to complete. Though hard to believe, this was an enriching experience and fairly fun as well, as we could do something different from our usual 集合s and could put our imaginations to good use. I believe that many of us can agree that we also bonded over these activities as we traded ideas and improved each other’s work.

Discussion of Physical Training(PT) and Goal Setting
The Year 1s and 2s split up into their respective batches to discuss on the matter of PT and set their goals before informing the I/Cs of what they had come up with.

Reflection by a Year 2:
Last Friday, we discussed on what the suitable amount of PT should be. So, we listed down the types of PT we have done before (e.g., planking, leg raise, jumping jacks etc.) and gauge how much we can do as a batch at one shot. For me, this wasn't easy, since I cannot accurately estimate how much PT I can do at one shot. Also, my PT standard is slightly lower compared to my batch mates, since I'm weaker when it comes to PT. Also, we were asked to list down the goals we hope to achieve after doing all the PT, such as being more bonded. All in all, this discussion made me more aware of everyone's PT standards, and also got to set goals as a batch.

Dental Health Badge
The Year 1s, 2s and 3s joined together again and sat in their respective patrols to complete the given activities.

Here are the tasks:
Task
Details
1
Know the structure and function of teeth.
2
Make a model or chart of a tooth with whatever materials that can be used
3
Know the various oral hygiene aids and their correct use
4
Know the importance of good nutrition for good dental health
5
Name 6 foods which contain free sugars and how they affect dental health
6
Demonstrate how a younger child can be taught to practice good oral hygiene
7
Do a dental health poster

Reflection by a Year 2:
The first badge work we did together was the dental health badge. After we were briefed slightly, we were given a few tasks to complete. The first one was drawing and labelling of a tooth, and it gave me insight on how our teeth really look like because I had not seen them in detail before. We were also asked on how to motivate young children to have good dental health, which reminded me of a scheme I had in Primary 1 to make us brush our teeth twice a day, during which we could put a sticker on the booklet whenever we brushed our teeth. I feel that this activity made us think more on dental health, allowing us to gain knowledge and insight on the issue.

Accident Prevention Badge
After completing the activity for the Dental Health Badge, we started working on the Accident Prevention Badge, in our respective patrols as well.

Here are the activities:
Activity
Details
1
Write how to guard against accidents and when using: gas electrical appliances, kerosene stoves, naked lights, open fires
2
Write what special precautions to take in the house with:
  • Small children
  • Old people
3
Write at least three different ways of preventing accidents:
  • When boating and bathing;
  • When using public transport, cars and cycles;
  • When with animals;
  • In high-rise buildings.
4
Write what special precautions to take outdoors with regard to barbed wire, poisonous plants, storms and other hazards, e.g.  jelly-fish

Reflection by a Year 2:
Last Friday, we did accident prevention badge work. We were tasked to answer the four questions, which were firstly: how to prevent accidents from happening when using gas stove, kerosene lamps and when using a naked fire. The second question is what precautions we can take when we have old people and small children, the third question is for us to list three precautions to the given scenario and the last question is what can we do to avoid accidents when there are animals, poisonous plants, barbed wires and other threats near us. When answering the questions, I was given the opportunity to think carefully about the precautions and accidents that may happen. Some things that I never really thought would be dangerous was shown for us to answer, letting me gain more insight on the risks that could be around us. Safety should always be our number one priority and we must be aware of our surroundings. Hence I found this badge work rather memorable and meaningful as I learnt a lot from my batchmates when we exchanged answers and I felt more educated on how to prevent accidents from happening.

Hope that everyone enjoyed this 集合 and found it fulfilling!
