Annual Training Camp, 19 November 2020

Hello Guides!

We will be continuing on with our last day of the ATC journey!

The overall storyline for day 4 is as follows:

After a couple more days of cruising the vast universe, you and your crewmates travelled through countless galaxies till you finally found one with a suitable environment and seemed unaffected by the radiation. Could this be your new home? Spaceship Christine lands on the unfamiliar planet, and you set off, making the new land feel more like home. In today’s jihe, you will be building suitable structures to aid you as you settle down. This undiscovered planet has the resources to keep you alive, but the impostors pose a larger threat. How will the human race survive if the infected people threaten to wipe you out? You are the last survivors. Only after defeating them can you truly live without fear. Time is ticking. Tick, tock, tick, tock. Anytime now, they could strike again. Work quickly, or risk your crewmates’ lives. The impostors are merciless, hungry for the next victim’s blood. Hurry! Before it is too late!

Kitchen Table

Upon landing, you realise you will need a structure to hold your logistics, belongings and seat your crew mates. This practical shelter will serve as a place for you to rest and recharge, to prepare yourself for the upcoming battles. For each patrol, you are to build a Kitchen Table. If you are able to complete it, you will certainly be rewarded.

Reflection from a Year 1

For the Kitchen Table we built, although we managed to complete it, I feel that our sense of urgency at some parts of the activity can be improved. For example, we took quite long to take all the logistics needed for the Kitchen Table. I feel that our constant 报时 and cheering could be improved as well because we didn't do it very often and sometimes it was not loud enough to be heard by the other patrols. We should also have 照顾好东西 and 人 better as we did not really do so throughout the whole activity. Instead of standing around when we had nothing else to do, we should have taken more initiative to ask the Year 2s what to do next instead of just standing around. Overall, we felt a sense of achievement as we were able to complete the Kitchen Table but felt that there were other areas that we could further improve on.

Reflection from a Year 2

To build the Kitchen Table, we had to first collect our logistics. Because we also had to get other things not from backstore like helmets, we decided to split the work and let one patrol get most of the miscellaneous items while the rest of the patrols get the 木 required for the 团. Despite all this planning, we still 过时 quite a bit. I feel that we should work much faster at collecting logistics as throughout the Annual Training Camp, I feel that we always take quite some time to collect logistics, especially from the backstore. As to building the Kitchen Table, my patrol was the only patrol which completed the structure. While I do feel a sense of pride at completing the structure, I feel that there, too, are areas that can be improved on. For instance, as a Year 2, I feel that I should step up more and take initiative to assign the Year 1s things to do. I could look at the bigger picture to ensure that the manpower is well distributed. This can greatly reduce the time taken for us to do things as it could put better use to our limited manpower.

Kitchen Shelter

As time passes, you realise that the sun is going to set, and that you will need a structure to protect your logistics, belongings and crew mates. This shelter will shield you from any possible dangers and prevent you from getting hurt while you settle down. On this planet, you are unfamiliar with your surroundings. The environment may pose threats to your survival but you know you can trust your instinct. For each patrol, you are to build a Kitchen Shelter.

Reflection from a Year 1

The building of the Kitchen Shelter during 集合 was very interesting and I learnt a lot from that activity. Since it was my first time building it, the Year 2s taught us how to build it. I think it was very enriching to be able to build the structure in real life despite the current Covid-19 restrictions. This has also helped me become more familiar with various structures other than those that we have previously built such as the Kitchen Table. I think this activity helped me to have a more hands-on experience hence deepening my memory of the building of the Kitchen Shelter. Building a structure in a grass area was also quite new and interesting and I think it has helped replicate the campsite area where we were originally supposed to build structures at. So all in all I think this activity of building the Kitchen Shelter has been interesting and enriching.

Reflection from a Year 2

During this 集合, we built a Kitchen Shelter together as a patrol. As a Year 2, I have benefitted a lot from this 集合. We should always look at the bigger picture first before the smaller details. In this way, we would be able to better lead the Year 1s and have a better overall idea how we are going to build the structure. For example, all 3 patrols had to change the orientation of the canvas sheet because we did not think further if we had enough space for the structure. We could also have a better sense of urgency, especially since we already wasted quite a lot of time changing the layout. During this time, we also learnt the importance of 报时. We had to be well aware of our time. However, in my opinion, everyone in the patrol improved a lot from the previous 集合s. For the Year 2s, we were more familiar with the structure and were able to distribute our manpower more efficiently. As for the Year 1s, they were able to tie tighter lashes and ask us for help whenever they are in doubt.

Baggage Rack

The sneaky impostors try to take away your belongings to leave you to die. But by building a structure, you can prevent this and keep your belongings safe. You and your crew mates are tasked to build a Baggage Rack suitable to hold your logistics.

Reflection from a Year 1

We managed to revise on our lashes while building the Baggage Rack especially the A-架 and the square lash. We also learnt how to raft from our seniors and also further revised our netting. Besides that, it was also good that we practised tying our baggage rack as we did not tie it after many 集合s. Although our lashes were tighter than before and we were faster in tying all of our lashes, we still had much space for improvement. We could have certainly 报时 and cheered more.  This will help to boost our 团 morale and give us a better sense of timing and a sense of urgency. Also, we should  improve on 照顾好人 and 东西. This is so as if we do not do so, we will not be able to complete the structure with the lack of materials. We also learnt that it would be good to help out other patrols when we are done especially when some of them have lesser manpower. This is showing 团的精神 which is good. Lastly, we look forward to December's 集合s and also welcoming in the new batch of year ones. We know that we still have much to improve on and will continue to try our best to do better and better with each 集合.

Reflection from a Year 2

There was an improvement in the building of our Baggage Rack. We had a better sense of urgency and cheered a lot more. However, I think we can have an even better sense of urgency since we took almost twice the standard timing for the Baggage Rack. We could also 照顾好东西 better as quite a lot of logistics got kapped. We can also take turns to cheer and not rely on the same few people as the seniors had to even mouth alert some people. We had tighter lashes but I think we could still improve on our lashes as some lashes needed us to 重抽 or 重打. We did have better communication with patrols and as Year 2s I feel we stepped up more and took note of the bigger picture and small details like how much to 开 the tripod because the short half bamboo might be too short and take note of protrusion.

Good job crewmates for completing this Annual Training Camp! You have successfully completed all your tasks and ejected all the imposters. Congratulations! Even though this is a very scaled down Annual Training Camp and very different from the our annual one held at Camp Christine, but we truly hope that you have learnt something from these 4 集合s.

Reflection from a Year 1

ATC 2020 had its fair shares of ups and downs. It has certainly brought us closer as a patrol. Day 1 was already off to a rough start. First, we learnt how to pitch a tent, a useful skill for survival. After learning how to pitch a tent, we had to do Physical Training. Although Physical Training was tiring, the constant cheering of our batchmates helped to boost morale and kept us going. After Physical Training, we built a Kitchen Table. After learning to build a kitchen table a week ago, this was a great way to revise and practise our lashes. Day 3 of ATC was a lot better. We had an Obstacle Journey. Obstacle Journey required a clear understanding of the trekking signs, survival signs and first aid skills. Along the way, we gathered clues as to who the imposter was. At the end of the day, we successfully voted out the first imposter. On the third day, we had station games. Before it started, we had an inspection. During inspection, we tried our best to 照顾好东西 and 报时 but cheering can be done more frequently. During station games, we were unfamiliar with our guides notes and we should read up on them. The last day of ATC 2020 was great. First, we learnt how to build a Kitchen Shelter. After completing the structure, we had a prize giving ceremony. As a patrol, we learnt where we could improve. ATC 2020 was a great experience that allowed me to better bond with my patrol and batchmates.

Reflection from a Year 2

During ATC, I felt that the expectations for all of us were definitely higher and we could feel the pressure as we have to step up to lead properly. However, ATC has helped us to grow and revise on how to build basic structures like Kitchen Shelter and Kitchen Table. As a senior, stepping up used to feel uncomfortable but ATC  helped me to do things out of my comfort zone and I can now try to step up without much hesitation. ATC has also given me a chance to look at our areas for improvement. One thing we can improve on is to cheer and 报时 more often. Due to the fact that we do not 报时 frequently, time extensions were asked quite late and we always move rather slowly thinking there is a lot of time left. Our sense of urgency can also be improved. We were still unfamiliar with how to build structures like Kitchen Shelter and need to think about other factors like wind direction while building it. Overall, there is much room for improvement but we also did our best and learnt a lot from this year’s ATC.

We hope that through all the ATC activities we have planned, everyone managed to learn lots from it and revised on what they were unsure of. It has sincerely been a tough one but we all made it through together. Well done Guides!
