2nd November Pre-Camp Inspection

Hi Guides!(:

On 2nd November, we had Pre-Camp Inspection! During the last few days in between the start of December holidays and 2nd November, our Year 2s and Year 1s have been busily preparing for ATC, which stands for Annual Training Camp:) During Pre-Camp Inspection, the Year 2s and Year 1s (trainees) had to lay out all their logistics in their styrofoam box and 配备 neatly for the Year 3s (counsellors) to check, to ensure that they had all the logistics needed ready for camp, and were also graded on various aspects. It was quite hectic(:

Firstly, we had Attire Check to check if everyone was in Standard Attire, then the trainees had to mass change from Guides Uniform to PE Attire in 10mins, followed by another 10mins for them to layout their logistics. Then Pre-Camp Inspection began! The respective patrol counsellors went to each patrol on a rotational basis and below were the grading criteria:
 

P1 – Attire

P2 – Standardization of layout according to proposal

P3 – Neatness

P4 - Completeness

P5 – Meaning of identity

P6 – Patrol spirit and morale

After the patrol counsellors checked the patrols' layouts in accordance to their criteria, the trainees had to do the punishments with respect to their marks. It was a mini PT session!(: After all the patrols had been graded, the trainees were given 5 minutes to clean up and return all logistics, followed by a debrief by the counsellors for them to learn from their mistakes!:)

Reflections from a Year 2:

Having Pre-Camp Inspection meant that ATC was nearing. It was quite tough and it made us realise that we would have to train ourselves harder for ATC. I feel that we could have memorized the layout better and be clearer of what we had to do, to avoid confusion and doubts. I have also learnt that we should take care of each other in the patrol, especially the Year 1s as they have not went through this before. In my opinion, Pre-Camp Inspection allowed us to familiarize and remember our patrol songs and cheers, and it served as a bonding session. Overall, the inspection was a good experience as it prepared us for the upcoming ATC and reminded us that we as Year 2s, had to guide the Year 1s along.

It was definitely a memorable experience!

19th October Inter-Unit Initiatives

On 19th October, we had Inter-Unit Initiatives with Guides from Broadrick Secondary School and Tanjong Katong Girls School!:) Our special guests were mixed into our patrols and we had initiatives with them:D

For Coy 1, we did Pssyla Beads, for Coy 2, we had Tie-Dye!

Coy 1

A small introduction to Pyssla Beads!:)

 

Pyssla beads or hama beads are made from plastic and can be fused using an iron. It's a fun toy because you can make a lot of designs with it and you can use it as a key chain, necklace or flat fridge magnet.

Basically, we had a short briefing about Pyssla Beads from our I/Cs, then we were given the needed materials (the beads, pegboard, tracing paper, iron) and around 2 hours to do whatever design we wanted!:) Of course, we chatted with our guests in the process too!:)

During the two hours, we thought of what design we wanted first. There were pegboards of various shapes, such as circle, heart, and square, and also beads of different colours. After deciding on the design, we then slotted in the beads onto the pegboards in the design we want, followed by placing tracing paper over it and ironing it to make the beads fuse together.

Here's how Pssyla Beads look like:

Tie-Dye is about folding a piece of fabric in a certain way, then adding dye onto it to get the design you want:) Firstly, we soak the fabric in hot water, followed by folding the fabric to get a design that we want.

Take a simple swirl design for an example: First, grab the centre of the fabric, then twist the fabric to get a swirl by pinching the centre and turning your hand.

After that, use rubber bands to tie up the fabric and secure the twist,

Followed by adding the dye you want onto the fabric, then flipping the fabric over and adding more dye to reinforce the pattern.

Finally, spread it out and leave it to dry or blow-dry it and it's done!(:

 

Overall, while enjoying ourselves in doing the activities, we also talked with our fellow Guides from the other schools and learnt more about each other:) It was a great chance to find out what activities other Guides do and also forge new friendships in the process!:)

12 October Initiatives

Hi Guides!!!!(:

On 12th October, we had Initiatives after a long, long break from End-of-Year Exams!(: This was a chance to facilitate bonding inter-batch and also for our Guides to relax and learn new things!:)

There were two sections for Initiatives(: For the first half, Coy 1 had Sand-Art, while Coy 2 did Baking. Then, both coys merged together and had Hair-Braiding!!(:

Coy 1

For Coy 1, each patrol had to make use of a A3 Board, glue, and of course, sand(: to come up with a board to decorate their 小队箱! They were required to include their patrol name, number, and the words 'COY 1' on the board as well. Then, they were given 1hr 5 mins to finish constructing the board. It was quite a fun process!(:

For Coy 2, everyone baked Oreo Truffles(:(: Each patrol was given sufficient Oreos, cream cheese, and chocolate to bake 42 truffles in 1 hour, enough for everyone in the patrol! Everyone enjoyed themselves mixing, baking, and of course, eating!:D

Hair-Braiding

Both Coys were taught by the I/Cs how to tie 1. the normal braid, 2. the French braid, 3. the Fishtail braid, and 4. the Dutch braid!:) Then, they were given 30 minutes to try out any of the braids that they liked, on themselves, or on each other:) It was refreshing to learn new styles of braiding, and this skills would also serve well when we wear Guides Uniform:)

Overall, Initiatives was quite fun and enriching. Everyone had fun, and we could taste the fruits of our own labours. Everyone took home something from the activity:)

15 September East Division Day

Hi Guides!!(:

On 15 September, we had East Division Day!!:) East Division Day is a day on which all the Guides in the East Divison will come together to participate in competitions:)

At 8am, we 集合ed at Bedok View Secondary School:) Afterwards, we went to the hall for a short while for a briefing and opening speech, followed by splitting up and going to our competition venues according to each respective committee at 9am:)

Then, after an intense period of competing,

 

 

 

 

 

we gathered back at the hall at 11am for prize-giving ceremony!:) So...........here are the results! *drum roll*

1. Musical -- 1st prize, Coy 1

3. Mini Gadgets -- 3rd prize, Coy 2

Although we did not win many prizes, we all put in a lot of effort preparing for East Division Day:) Through EDD, inter-届 bonding was promoted. We all learnt more about each other, be it junior or senior, and we had FUN in the process!:) It was a very fun and meaningful experience for all of us, and we definitely won't forget it!
