Skills Training, 26 Febuary 2016

Hello Guides! (:

For last Friday’s 集合, the y1s and y2s had a separate activity from the y3s.

Year 1s + Year 2s Activity

The year 2s were given 20 minutes to teach the year 1s the basic lashes that we use in guides, the square lash and diagonal lash.

Afterwards they were given another 20 minutes to teach the year 1s tripod lash and a-jia lash.

At the end of the teaching session, each patrol, consisting of only year 1s and year 2s were required to build a baggage rack each. They were given 30 minutes to do so.

 Reflections from a year 1…
The lash activity was really fun and I learned how to tie a baggage rack. Though the baggage rack was a bit out of shape and unstable, I still had fun tying it and to me, it was another thing I learned in my life.

Reflections from a year 2…
As it was only the second 集合 for the Y1s, we as Y2s had to teach them the basic lashes to set their foundations in Guides. Firstly, we were given 15 minutes to teach them each of the basic lashes – square, diagonal and tripod. Subsequently, we were tasked to build a baggage rack. Although the tasks were seemingly easily, we as Y2s learnt a lot from this as it was one of the first times that we were the ones leading our juniors. When being given 5 minutes to go to tuanbu to get the necessary materials, we learnt to properly communicate with one another despite the slight chaos in the midst of transferring mu here and there. We learnt to give clear instructions to the Y1s and made sure they understood; but most importantly I learnt to put my juniors before myself like ensuring that they were not lost or confused as to what was going on. Whilst teaching the Y1s on the lashes, it was not as easy as it seemed. It took patience to convey our message across clearly in actions and taking it a step at a time. It also reminded us the days when we as Y1s had just entered Guides and how our seniors had been quite patient with us. Lastly, when constructing the baggage rack; keeping in time required planning and communication as we had to come together to ask for time extension without exceeding the time limit. We learnt to be understanding towards the Y1s even though they took a long time to tie a lash and we worked together, helping them along the way. Overall, it was a simple but yet valuable experience for us.

Afterwards, the year 2s had to leave for their parent teacher meeting. The year 1s then did some physical training! They played catching with 2 year 4s as catchers. The forfeit for being caught was 10 burpies! Next, the year 4s and year 1s did a set of physical training! We ran around the block for two rounds and afterwards did some squads!

Reflections from a year 1…
Four of our seniors were catchers and we as fast as we could, trying not to get caught. We had to do punishment if we were caught. In the end, I was only caught 2 times so I only had to do the punishment twice. Perhaps I was lucky and din get caught often. Overall, the day was fun-filled and I had an enjoyable day spent there.

Year 3 Activity
The year 3s were given 12 minutes to retrieve all the necessary logistics at the grass patch at the elevated platform. 2 patrols combined to complete a kitchen table, emergency shelter and a flagpole. 3 patrols combined to complete a kitchen shelter as well.

Reflections from a year 3…
Overall, I felt quite satisfied that our batch was able to complete building all the structures within the given time limit. However, I still feel that we could have been faster and that we should have a greater sense of urgency, so that we would have more time to check our lashes and 收绳尾, as well as to improve our structures to the best of our ability. If we had been able to do that, we would not have to undergo the tedious forfeit of 90 jumping jacks. Lastly, I feel that we should have worked faster when -ing the structures by constantly 报时-ing, and having a greater sense of urgency. All in all, I feel that today's 集合 was really useful as it could help us practice and familiarise with the different camp development structures, which would be useful to us during the upcoming PLTC.

Hope everyone had a meaningful time!

Cheers,
Michelle
47th Batch Secretary
