SJB Sharing Session, 29 October 2019

Hi Guides!

On 29 October 2019, the Year 3s carried out a sharing session with our school’s St John Brigade! During the sharing session, the Year 3s taught the Year 1 SJB members how to tie a few lashes and knots, and apply these skills in tying a structure.

Before starting, we split ourselves into 3 groups to facilitate better learning. After explaining and demonstrating the lash or knot, the Year 1 SJB members tried to tie it themselves! In order to help them along the way, the Year 3s would give tips and correct them if needed.

Here are the knots and lashes that they learnt:

1. Clove Hitch
2. Timber Hitch
3. Half Hitch
4. Mickey Mouse Lash
5. Square Lash
6. Diagonal Lash
7. Tripod Lash
8. Netting

After learning and practicing these lashes, it was time to apply them by tying a baggage rack. While tying tripods, we also showed them how to tie 顶脚s.

Here is a reflection from a Year 3:
I think the St John Brigade sharing session was very beneficial for both parties, as us Year 3s got to recap the basic lashes, and bond with our fellow Uniformed Group members! Although I was worried that it would be awkward or tense as we did not know each other well, it was actually quite a nice atmosphere, as they were very friendly, and eager to learn. The SJB Year 1s picked up the skills quickly, and improved based on the feedback we gave, such as holding tension to prevent the lashes from coming loose. I felt glad that we were given this opportunity to bond with the SJB members while also teaching them more about gadgeting! Even though we were the ones teaching them, I felt that there was something we could learn from them too. In my group, I noticed that the Year 1s would help and wait for each other before moving onto the next lash, which displayed teamwork. They were also very patient when learning the lashes at first, as they would keep trying and practicing until they got the hang of it. As the direction to move the 白绳 in may have been confusing on the first try, they did not give up, and kept practicing. Furthermore, SJB Year 1s did not hesitate to clarify their doubts, which helped in creating a better learning environment, so that we could ensure that they fully understood certain aspects of gadgeting. We were very grateful for their active participation and I enjoyed the sharing session thoroughly!

Here are some photos from the sharing session:

We hope the SJB members learnt something from today and enjoyed the sharing session, and thank you for being so friendly and eager to learn!
