Hi Guides!
The long-anticipated day has finally come, where we warmly welcomed our Year 1s into our Guides Family! The day’s programme kick-started with the Year 1s attending a lecture by two Year 4s. Initially, we had planned for the Year 2s and 3s to build an outdoor fire altar concurrently, so that we could have Outdoor Cooking with the Year 1s after their lecture. However, while they were building the fire altar, there was a sudden downpour. As such, we were unable to have Outdoor Cooking, and neither did we have the time to carry out the Wet Weather plan to do Creative Gadgeting. After the Year 1s listened to the lecture, we introduced some Guides songs and the 团歌 to the Year 1s. Subsequently, we had lash training and patrol corner to promote bonding within the patrol.
Y1 Lecture:
Teaching of Guides songs:
For this activity, the patrols sat in a circle and introduced some songs to the Year 1s. We sang the song once for the Year 1s to get an idea of the melody, before we got them to sing the song together. Through this activity, we aim to bring the patrol closer and also allow the Year 1s to experience singing songs like how we used to 领歌.
Reflection from a Year 2:
Learning the songs on Friday's 集合 was very fun and fulfilling. We got to recap on our songs and learn the Guide's song which we all were not very familiar with. Since the Year one's just came in, we would have to teach them and that required patience. We also had to sing and demonstrate to them to teach them. I think that we could have taught them better by asking them to sing along more because I think they still were not very familiar. I feel that the whole activity really boosted morale and hopefully shows the Year 1's the sisterhood in Guides and how fun it is to be in guides. Watching the different patrols performing and cheering for them was also very fun and interesting as we have not done this in quite a while. I think some patrols also sang along with the other patrols which was very heartwarming to see. This activity did bond us and made us get to know each other better. I think we could have probably sang louder as there were many patrols in the same location and it was quite noisy. This way, the y1: would be able to have a clearer understanding of how the song melody goes. In conclusion, this was a fun experience that allowed us to bond as a patrol and also introduce some of our Guides songs to the y1s.
Reflection from a Year 3:
During last Friday’s 集合, we welcomed a new batch of y1s into Guides by teaching them and performing the Guides songs. Even though we did not manage to do outdoor cooking, it was still a very memorable experience to be able to welcome yet another batch of y1s into Guides. I think that this session has helped with introducing another side of Guides to them, such that Guides is not just about tying structures but we also do many other different activities. Through that session, we also managed revised the songs with the y2s and ensured that they will be confident when they 领歌 next time in 集合. In addition, I think it was also a very good opportunity for us to clarify any doubts especially regarding the 团歌. Although we were slightly nervous when performing the Guides songs as we were the first ones to go onstage, it was a good time for us to have more confidence such that in the future we are able to 领歌 during 集合and not wait for the seniors to prompt us. Lastly, I think that we managed to learn a lot of things through this 集合. We also look forward to working with the y1s and making them feel welcomed in Guides.
Lash Training:
During lash training, the Year 2s and 3s patiently demonstrated and taught the Year 1s some of the basic lashes, like square lash and diagonal lash. This activity also serves to allow the Year 2s and Year 3s to revise on their lashes as well.
Reflection from a Year 2:
Through the lash training for the Y1s, I got to interact to get to know the y1s better, and also get an idea about how it is like to be an official senior. I feel happy yet abit anxious on how future 集合s would be like, as we are no longer the youngest in the CCA and we would have to step up more to lead our y1s since we are their direct seniors. During lash training, I taught the y1s about the most important thing they have to look out for when tying a lash. For example: how to do frapping, tucking in 鸟绳,and number of times the 白绳must go over the Gadget pole. I also tried making the instructions as simple and clear as possible so that the Y1s are able to better understand it and they will not feel so overwhelmed. I was very happy and proud as the Y1s seemed to pick up the new skills very fast and they could even manage to tie some of the lashes without any help from us. The lash training not only helped the Y1s to learn the basic skills in Guides but also helped the Y2s and Y1s to bond together as we will be spending the next four years together. I feel that it is crucial for the Y1s to learn the basic lashes, as this would allow them to be able to participate more when we do Gadgeting or Pioneering in the future. I hope that next time we will be able to teach the Y1s ourselves without the assistance of the Y3s and also be a kind and helpful senior to the Y1s. Lastly, I look forward to spending more time with our new Y1s for future 集合s, get to know them better and bond with them.
Reflection from a Year 3:
The lash training activity was an enriching experience for me, as I not only got to interact more with the Year 1s, but also learnt to teach what I know to others. From this activity, I found out that one of the Year 1s in my patrol was an extremely fast learner, and it was fun to see how much the Year 1s could remember from what we have shown them. While the Lash Training session served as an introduction of the Guides basic lashes to the Year 1s, it also reflected the Year 2s’ ability to teach and their standards as well. It was very heartening to see that the Year 2s did not leave out any minor details, such as frapping, tucking in 鸟绳, as well as 抽. The Year 1s were rather enthusiastic when they got to tie the lashes hands on, which motivates us to take good care of our new members. Seeing them step up shows that they are prepared to take care of the Year 1s, even if there is still room for improvement. As Year 3s, we should and will refine our soft and hard skills, to the best of our abilities.
Patrol Corner:
We had Patrol Corner to allow the patrol to get to know each other better and promote bonding, since our CCA values sisterhood deeply.
Reflection from a Year 2:
Last Friday, we had multiple Patrol Corners, however the one that I remember the most was the one when the Year 1s had just joined us. I felt that it was so nice to meet our new juniors who we will be spending the next 2 to 4 years with. We got to know their names and classes. I felt so excited and worried to meet my new patrol mates because, eventually we would have to teach them all about the lashes, and rules in Girl Guides. We were fortunate to have kind and generally respectful juniors who learnt very fast. Through the Patrol Corner I even learnt some new things about the seniors. At the end of the day, we had yet another Patrol Corner. Through this Patrol Corner, I felt very happy to know that the Year 1s managed to learn new things about Girl Guides from me and my batchmates. I found it so hard to believe that just last year, we were the ones learning from our seniors. Now, it was our turn to pass on our knowledge to our juniors. I am very thankful that our juniors learnt very quickly and it was not very difficult to teach them how to tie the different lashes, such as square lash and diagonal lash.
Reflection from a Year 3:
That week's Patrol Corner was more relaxed but it was very exciting to get to see our new Year 1s and introduce Girl Guides to them. Although they were shy at first and we could not really interact with them as much, they eventually warmed up to us. However due to the unexpected rain which made us unable to carry out outdoor cooking, through just chatting with them and a rather relaxed lash training we were able to introduce them to the basics of Girl Guides. With the new Year 1s coming in, it was also a great opportunity to let the Year 2s step up to lead their juniors. It was the Year 2’s first time leading and directing others without us, the Year 3 seniors having to be there to tell them what to do, or give detailed instructions. As our 领导层 is right around the corner in a couple more months, it was rather fulfilling to see the juniors step up. However, there was also a bit of pressure and a tinge of sadness that soon we would be the batch leading the 团. It was also a bit like a slap from reality, and realising we should be more disciplined as we would be the ones leading soon.
All in all, we hope that the Year 1s feel welcomed into our Guides family and that everyone had fun getting to know each other better!
