Overnight Camp on 7-8 July 2012

Last week, we had an overnight camp on 7 to 8 July. This camp was a very significant and memorable one as we had our Enrollment ceremony and Passing-Down ceremony during this camp. It was a leisure camp meant for the entire company to bond and have fun:)

On 7 July, we started the camp at 2.45pm. Firstly, we had a short patrol corner to revise the footdrills for the Enrollment ceremony, which is a formal ceremony that will make our Year 1s truly recognized as Guides. They would wear their Guides uniform for the first time and would receive their Enrollment badge, which is pinned on their scarf, a symbol that identifies them as a part of Girl Guides. It is a very significant milestone in every Guide's journey. After patrol corner, we ran to the field to practise the footdrills.

After that, we had company games:) There were a total of two games played. One of them was at the parade square, while the other was at the elevated court. The company split into two groups, one group playing at one location, followed by a switch after one hour.
At the parade square, we played captain's ball...with a twist!:) Two patrols played against each other in one court. We started things off with a volleyball....a warm-up for what was to come :):)

Then we had a switch of materials, and a tennis ball was switched for the volleyball! The tennis ball, being smaller, was slightly harder to catch, but we managed to work together and score goals for each of our respective patrols :)

The tennis ball was then switched for a sponge that was slightly soaked with purple paint >:) It spiced things up as it was stained with paint (but not dripping with it) and whoever who caught it got their hands stained too! However, we got over it and just had fun:)

After playing with the sponge, we had a switch of patrols so as to promote inter-patrol bonding throughout the group. We played captain's ball with the same materials in the same order, starting off with the tennis ball, followed by the sponge....and...

The sponge was then switched with a wet rag!:D And this time, it was dripping slightly with water, so when it was thrown, water splashed down around the vicinity:) It was thrilling and we had lots of fun throwing it to our patrolmates:)

After this game at the parade square, we had a switch of location (and games!)

At the elevated court, we played a different game. Due to space constraints, only two patrols could play at one time. We took turns to play the game, so while two patrols were playing, the other two were waiting. While waiting, the patrols had patrol corner so as to bond more within the patrol(:

When it was our turn, the game was played like this: each patrol was provided with cotton twine and water balloons. We had to do something like a three-legged race, but with one water balloon cushioned between each person's neck and shoulder. If the water balloon were dropped, it can be picked up, but it would slow the patrol. The patrol who reaches the other end of the court first wins:) We all stood in one line at the end of the court, with the person on the right tying her left leg together with the next person's right leg. The next person then tied her left leg with the next person's right leg, and so on, till the end of the line, where the last person has her left leg free.

And we were off!

Although it was difficult to coordinate our movements, and the water balloons kept slipping off our shoulders, we all agreed we had fun, whether we won or not :) And then....we had free time to play around with some surplus water balloons! >:D

Thoughts from a Year 2 guide:
Everyone was very active during the games, and we all had fun bonding not only as a patrol but also with other patrols. Both games were very interesting and fun in all, and many of us got quite wet during the second game! :)

After this, we gathered back at the parade square and mass-changed into our Guides uniform, followed by roll call at the field, then we had dinner at the canteen:)
After dinner, at around 7 to 8pm, we went up to the hall. All the year 1s' parents were there to witness the Enrolment ceremony. But before that, an introduction to DHS Guides company was given by Tse Puay, our former Company Leader, followed by an introduction to Young Adult Leaders branch of Guides, which is meant for former Guides of ages 17 to 18.

The Enrollment ceremony then began.

We had a short break and had photo-taking as a patrol, batch, and company. :)

From a Year 2 Guide:
As we watched our Year 1s getting enrolled, we were filled with a sense of pride and joy. We were happy that our Year 1s officially became a part of our big family:)

After photo-taking, the Passing-Down ceremony began. This is another formal ceremony meant for the Year 4 Guides to step down as the former leadership batch and pass down their positions to the Year 3 batch, the new leaders.

After the Passing-Down ceremony, we had 1 hour and 30 minutes to change into our performance attire and rehearse for PDP'12. PDP stands for Passing-Down Parade, which is a series of performances put up after the Passing-Down ceremony for our Year 4s. We perform as a batch, meaning that all the Year 1s will perform an item together, followed by the Year 2s, the Year 3s, and the Year 4s.

At around 11.30pm, we started off PDP'12! The Year 1s performed first, dancing to the song "Fireworks", and some of them shuffled across the stage! :) Halfway through the song, they invited the Year 4s up onto the stage to dance with them (:

Then the Year 2s performed. They also performed a dance item, to the song "Fantastic Baby". :)

After that, the Year 3s performed. They performed a musical about some aspects of camp that with short dances in between. Then they performed a song item, followed by a small talk by each of the Year 3s to their Year 4 seniors in their respective patrols.
The Year 4s performed a dance item to the song "Stereo Hearts", followed by a song item. After that, they took turns to have a heart-to-heart talk to their Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3 juniors in their respective patrols.

Thoughts from a Year 1 Guide:
It was a very emotional experience for me. Even though I wasn't that close with the Year 4 seniors, I realised I was extremely sad with the fact that they would not be around us all the time. I realised the importance of the time that we had spent together and also the memories that we had. I remember being one of the few awkward Year 1s crying!

Thoughts from a Year 2 Guide:
We were all feeling sad as the seniors were passing down already. All of us were overwhelmed with emotions and many of us cried. Everyone was quite upset that the Year 4s were leaving. We'll definitely miss the Year 4s a lot!

Thoughts from a Year 3 Guide:
During PDP'12, especially during the Year 4s' performance, we Year 3s felt sad as the Year 4s, our direct seniors, were passing down. As the new leadership batch, we felt a little lost as our seniors were leaving us. However, we will definitely grow into our roles and bring the company to greater heights(:

After all the performances, we had supper and patrol corner.

At around 2am in the morning, we had lights-out.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day, 8 July, we woke up at 7am and had a light breakfast with our patrols, after which camp ended. Some of the patrols went to the nearby MacDonald's to have patrol breakfast together, as well as to exchange PDP presents, and have a nice talk with their Year 4 seniors (:

WE LOVE YOU YEAR 4s! <3
